While I agree that ender chests and the like are unnecessary, I would argue that a base is also required to offer some level of protection from mobs, via walls or well spread lighting.
personally, I prefer my 'small bases' to be things you could (at least in theory) just sorta pop up anywhere as a utility - maybe you found a large ore vein and want to mine it out and smelt all the ore down, so you set up a little spot with a chest (for storing stone and ores), a few furnaces, and a crafting table for making more pickaxes.
Yes, "a base" might not need an anvil, ender chest and enchanting table in order to call a base and survive in minimum BUT a base should also provide a protection. If you AFK there, you most definetely die at night. So a base is not a structure only consist of bed, chest, crafting table and furnace; a base must have a roof and walls to call base and safely hide from dangers of night. What have you made is not a base but a camp with sleeping-bag and you don't have a tent or even a tarp to cover your head.
Chest minecarts are more compact, since a minecart is 0.7m high and 0.98m long. You can clip them into the bed using the farmland clip, on top of a furnace under the bed, and a crafting table to the side. This base is 3 blocks. Furnace minecarts aren't furnaces, so this can't be improved to 2 blocks, without bending the (already way too bended) rules.
@@caspermadlener4191Seriously, what... why is the furnace minecart??? Its intended use seems pretty stupid to me. Minecarts don't actually link up all that well, and the furnace minecart seems more like a liability to use than anything. Never actually used it before since I play on Bedrock, but still... Okay, I quickly read through the Minecraft wiki page for the thing, and it's... not too bad? Though, I might be missing something, but apparently minecarts with furnaces are... slightly slower than walking speed when powered. Amazing.
In 1.20, "update skipping" is still possible. By chaining an update skipper to the farmland block and mining it, you can break the crop without updating the half bed.
I think one thing is overlooked. A base is also enclosed and must have an entrance that can be closed. This is required because if not a mob could attack you.
They don't have to be enclosed, me and my friend just put some fences around a manageable area then lit it up and it worked really well for less rescources
@@jon.arbuckle. but the mobs shouldn't be able to just walk up to you, at least zombies and creepers. Skeleton and spider protection is also preferable. The "base" in the video has none
i think i'd add the requirement of the base having to be an enclosed space as one of the core ingredients for a base. you can plop up a bed, crafting, furnace, and chest anywhere, but its not really a base if its not within some building with an entrance.
A base in the nether would need a respawn anchor instead of a bed, and a respawn anchor is already one block in size, so the 5 block base he mentioned could be four blocks without using a half bed or anything if you simply built it in the nether with a respawn anchor on top.
Update suppression can be used to make a half bed if you change the direction, also there are much easier 1.18 suppressors. Also update suppression is not entirely patched in 1.19+ as OOM and CCE suppression still exist.
Here is a 3 block base concept: Have the bed on top of a furnace, with a crafting table next to it, and have the chest as a *minecart* clipped inside the bed. Everything is accessible here, since a minecart is less than a full block. This is unbreakable, since you require three different blocks, as the furnace, bed, and crafting table, because the furnace minecart does not function as a furnace. The minecart can be clipped inside the bed by just letting it land on a rail while also clipping in the bed, because a bed is less than a full block high. Also, update suppression still works in 1.20, since a 2 block design can be constructed with update suppression. For the first update suppression, you need a quite large redstone machine, or make it in earlier versions. This idea is based on another comment, who suggested a chest boat, although this doesn't count by redstone entity regulations.
Or, instead of trying to find a village with a half bed, you could just load up minecraft beta 1.7.3, grab a bed and a cactus, and place the cactus down, then be within a block of the cactus, then stand on the edge of that block, put the bed in your hand, and on the opposite direction of the edge you're standing on, right click the block next to the cactus, and then you have a half bed, unobstructed. (then you could just update to 1.20 and do whatever you want with it)
Using mods we can get this to be even smaller. With the Sleeping Bag mod, we don't even need a bed. We can just sleep anywhere. With Draconic Evolution, we can place a draconic chest which counts as a chest, a furnace, and a crafting table, however it can not provide power to itself like a vanilla furnace. So that only gets us down to 2 blocks, 1 for the chest, and 1 to power the furnace inside the chest.
Technical minecrafter here, Update suppression is actually possible 1.19+ using a technique found by Igna778 called "OOM Suppression" (Out of memory suppression). Pretty large setup but at least it is still possible. Oh also there is another thing called "Update skipping" which is basically the same thing, also works in 1.19 and only requires like 14 blocks to setup. Infernal has some videos on the setup if you're interested. Update suppression pre 1.19 is also really easy, you can just use the update skipper as it functions as a suppressor in older versions or use a rail suppressor (most common method)
Update suppression actually in possible in the most recent version, it's just a few specific methods that have been patched. New methods are a lot quicker and simpler too.
While I was speedrunning on 1.19, I found a village that has 3 top half beds without the crops obstructing the bottom half of the beds. the 2 beds were obstructed with a ruined portal while the other one was obstructed by an igloo.
IN 1.10.2 if I remember then when putting a cactus and then next to it a bed with the back part it left the front part which worked the same as on your seed from this episode
I actually found a half bed in a world too in 1.20 lol. It was split because of a lava lake, so it wouldn't have the original problem of updating farmland.
Nerd moment, but in 1.20 and 1.19 update suppression was patched in a way that forced certain blocks to update, however this can be manipulated by having desynchronization in the world such as a block not updating properly in the case of quasi-connectivity, and achieve a similar method of “update skipping” where the forced update conflicts with another mechanic like breaking obsidian to destroy parts of nether portals, essentially yes you can achieve the same result but it’s a slightly different technique as you no longer need to overload the game.
I think you're over thinking this. You could have a base without a bed, if you're playing in hardcore, because you can't respawn in it. You could also just play as a "minimalist", and not use a chest at all. Leaving the Crafting and furnace the only really "needed" blocks. So 2x1 is the smallest possible "base".
As a Minecraft almost 4 years player, I can say in the smallest Minecraft base should be at least 1 chest, a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a anvil
This is cool and all, but I'm with the majority here in thinking this isn't even a base. You've placed 4 blocks down and that's all. It's fundamentally flawed before you even get to the cool half bed part, but at least the full bed methods can be placed anywhere and you kinda sorta tried to make shelter with the underground bed. What's worse is that your half bed takes up just as much room in an ACTUAL base design (on account of the block can't be updated), and requires stupid odds to randomly spawn. Great "neat Minecraft fact" video, terrible "smallest base" video.
Yea, every base has a chest, bed, furnace and crafting table. Not all bases with have enchant tables e chests or even an anvil, because when you first start off you don’t make these until later in the world.
I've actually seen a few half beds in my long-term world, it's always been a farm taking a bite out of a savanna house. For some reason, that specific biome has really derpy village generation.
