    Benny's pistol could also have misfired, and since one can load their own rounds in the game, it is quite possible, whether Benny or an underling hand-loaded the rounds, the rounds were packed with insufficient powder. This is a likely scenario because Doc Mitchel plainly states HE HAD TO DIG OUT THE BULLET. This would mean the round was highly likely a junk round (very lousy ammo in the game), and had a lower muzzle velocity. Benny is portrayed as a poser; he acts like a big shot, but he's also cheap (he weasels out of paying the Khans he hired). I also doubt Benny is much of a marksman since he, again, is a poser. He relies on his underlings to do his dirty work, and let's face it, none of them are very bright. So combined with lack of marksmanship, a highly decorative - yet mediocre - 9mm pistol that probably hasn't been properly maintained, and finally the high probability of low-grade ammo combined with poor maintenance means Courier Six could have survived a headshot fired from Maria. As for the second shot you mentioned, when did that happen? Doc Mitchel only dug out ONE bullet. As for bleeding, Vic pulled you from the ground and brought you to Doc Mitchel within minutes of being shot, increasing the odds of post-headshot survival greatly. Finally, one last aspect that probably doesn't matter, but considering the odds of junk rounds being used, deserts get cold at night, and it's quite possible a poorly crafted bullet would allow excess gasses to escape ahead of the bullet due to imperfections in the geometry combined with condensing metal as the temperature drops. Like I said, that probably doesn't make much of a difference, but it sure doesn't help.

      Actually, one thing that occurred to me was the issue of weapon mods. The 9mm pistol is capable of being equipped with a suppressor (at least with mods), and immediately after doing so , every shot is suppressed. Might Benny have normally equipped his pistol with a suppressor, and therefore tended to load with subsonic rounds? Subsonics are noted for low penetration, especially in small-bore calibers that normally rely on high velocity for successful kill shots.

    The perfect blend of attributes allowed the Courier to survive.
    He was just strong enough to stop the bullet's force.
    He was just perceptive enough to notice the angle of the gun.
    He was just durable enough to survive the ensuing bloodloss.
    He was just charismatic enough to make Benny doubt his aim.
    He was just intelligent enough to know how to angle his head.
    He was just agile enough to move his head in the right direction.
    And he was just lucky enough so that these all came together.
    Add those up in any way and you have the perfect recipe for a revenge-fueled Wasteland Survival Guru.

      pepper Mill Yeah, letting go... the only part of the game I didn't quite agree with xD.
      "What, you seriously want me to leave all those gold bars behind me? Fuck that! I'll use all the Turbos I've stockpiled if I need to, but I ain't getting outta here without meh gold!" :D

    • @LeagusDaemon
      @LeagusDaemon 8 років тому +1

      Zomical gaming I have some trouble believing that, given that a non-cheated game can only reach 375 of carry weight and the 37 bars, together, weight more than 1200. To get all of them, it's pretty much necessary to be overencumbered. If you really did manage that feat without turbo, though, I'd be happy to hear more about your method ^^.
      As for selling, I may recommend the Gun Runners as well as Trading Outpost 188. The Crimson Caravan company may also be a good choice if you're in a hurry, and if you have Old World Blues installed, the Sink has enough money to also buy a few :3.

    • @tolbeanqueen1174
      @tolbeanqueen1174 8 років тому

      wait there were 37? I got like 18 or 19 of them... shit maybe I did drop some of them (sorry :P) But my method was basically dropping everything that wasn't a weapon I used a lot and making sure I had eaten or dropped all food that weighed something... Honestly this was a month or so ago but I remember escaping with all or the majority of the gold as every time I go back to that save file I have ED-E carrying nineteen gold bars so I can't remember if I managed to sell a few or not... I'll check the save file next time I play new vegas :)

    It is literally impossible, even with a critical hit, for Maria to kill the player in the cutscene using the combat damage tables. Even at level 1, Endurance 1, no armor, and assuming Benny has maxed Guns skill (he doesn't), it doesn't do enough damage to kill even with the critical and headshot bonuses. Ain't that a kick in the head?

    _What MatPat failed to take into account is that the moment "New Game" was clicked on, The Courier became the Player Character, therefore gaining a suite of supernatural capabilities, ranging from control over reality itself via Console Commands, the ability to create return points in the timeline, carrying hundreds of pounds without trouble, and of course, surviving many many headshots over the course of a short time. Though it would have been more realistic if you had the "Head Crippled" status effect when you woke up._

      Lone Wanderer Seeing as there are multiple other points in the game in which it states you where shot twice, such as The Forecaster saying "two to the skull, but one gets up" when you ask him to think about you, it can pretty much be considered canon. Let's just say that the intro cutting at the first shot is The Courier blacking out.

      Humanity survived and lived through a irradiated world for how long again in the fallout universe?

    • @EariosRandomness
      @EariosRandomness 9 років тому +1

      dra6o0n For 500 years, humanity lived underground. The radiation and fallout would have gone away by the time they got back up to the surface. I think, based off of some of the random side rooms, that they were using nuclear power. The people working with the reactors would have been exposed to radiation 24/7 for most of their lives. Their genetic structure would have partially broken down and rearranged, mutating them over successive generations. In other words, their power generation irradiated them into mutant freaks of nature. Some would probably have better mutations, and thus survive longer, produce more offspring, and eventually, the abilities would be a permanent part of the population's physiology. A possible genetic defect could be a thicker skull, causing less susceptibility to headshots. There, I summed up what I meant. Got it?

    • @StillRutger
      @StillRutger 9 років тому

      This could be possible considering familys have bin split during the begining of the nuclear war. For example: there are a couple of brothers/sisters with super human abilities like the fallout protagonists and they each go into a other vault. There they reproduce and make children with those same powers. This bloodline goes on for a few hundred years and comes down to all the protagonists its not an impossible theory and can even be true.

But this is Fallout which being in the future with a 1940's theme... its the future past, they clearly show all throughout the game they have advanced technology and medical improvements. They also showcase their ability to change how your mind things. In the game if you get addicted to something no matter how bad it is, they give you something and bam addictions gone like it never even happened. That means they would have had to use something to fix the brain's chemical dependency which is not possible today. So it's possible they could fix someone up, hell they could create humans in that game so... yeah not a problem for them.

    Ok, I might have to point out a few flaws in your theory... here's four points that might be clarifying.
    1. You CAN find hollow point ammo in the Mojave Wasteland. It's very uncommon, but there are merchants that sell different ammo types in the wasteland, such as the standard FMJ, to even incendiary rounds. It's just few and far between to find it. I'll bet my Pipboy 3000 somebody sells 9mm ammo variants it in the game. Benny probably only had standard (not hollow) ammo on hand when he tried to kill you, thus that why you probably survived.
    2. You DID suffer memory loss in the game. (SPOILER) It is implied that you used to do Courier work, and that you were supposed to deliver a package to Benny. There was a snafu, and Benny decided to take the package for himself, I believe... Haven't played to far in the game, but that's the main thing I remember...
    3. The Geneva Convention doesn't mean crap in 2281. Otherwise there wouldn't have been a full scale nuclear war in the first place. Everybody used the most devastating weapons they could find or make. They even have a gun called the Fat Man, which is a friggin portable mini-nuke gun! Definitely not friendly with the Geneva Convention. O_o
    4. Benny goofed up when he tried killing you. Like you said at the end. It take two shots to kill you in the head point blank (insert movie reference here). The first would render you unconscious. After Benny shot you once, he probably would have thought you were dead, since you appeared to be, when you were actually unconscious. What if it was a perfect storm? Benny's bad aim, standard ammo instead of hollow point, and a doctor nearby to fix your head. That would be extremely lucky, but hey. After all, you ARE in Vegas!
    Also... BOOM. Headshot!

    I have a theory for you. The Courier has been exposed to radiation just as much as the next guy in the wastes. They are not the same as us anymore. The radiation could have of toughened their skin or their muscle mass to soften the impact or penetration of a 9mm ball. A rifle round would be a different story in this case though.

    • @Viper194
      @Viper194 9 років тому

      We all know that people can survive headshots. Plus, don't think for a second that you have to wait exactly 10 generations for anything to be altered in radiation. The couriers story could be different, maybe his family was changed early by the radiation due to the dosage of direct intake and exposure. It's a theory and you can not downplay it at all.

    How do you know that Benny was using ball ammo? Did you forget that AP and hollow point are readily available in NV? No one cares about the GC anymore after all.
    Also, the guns you're using in most modern shooters fire a much smaller round then older guns do. 5.56, what the M16 uses, is basically a .22 on steroids.

    • @dom69foco
      @dom69foco 9 років тому +1

      Yeah no...
      blog.cheaperthandirt.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/22LR-556.jpg
      5.56mm rounds have a larger projectile and much more propellant. They're also designed to 'tumble' once they hit something, meaning if that something is a person there is a spinning chunk of metal passing through them. 7.62mm rounds, for example, are better for shooting through walls etc. but are more likely to pass through a person without transferring very much energy to the person.

    • @cellulanus
      @cellulanus 9 років тому +2

      dom69foco Doesn't change the fact that they are much, much smaller rounds when compared to old military ammo such as 8mm Mauser or .577/450. And 7.62 rounds the AK 47 is just a stubby rifle round.
      Modern military convention says that firing more smaller caliber bullets is better then firing a smaller amount of high caliber rounds.

    • @dom69foco
      @dom69foco 9 років тому +4

      Did you read my comment? 5.56mm rounds tumble inside the body, greatly increasing damage dealt. Nato 7.62 rounds often pass through without imparting much inertia/energy. AK 7.62mm rounds are a little slower and less accurate but less likely to over-penetrate. Everything is a trade off.

    .22+brain almost always equals death. It's a very valuable tool for real life hitmen because the bullet has enough force to go into the skull but, usually, not enough to escape it. So it ricochets in your head.
    I'm not going to speak on headshots with other calibre guns but in real life higher calibre bullets tend to have a lower mortality rate for body shots than lower calibre bullets. Hence why a lot of murder victims were killed with lower calibre bullets and why so many people survive a .50 calibre shot (again, talking about body shots). Bullets are said to be most dangerous when there's no escape wound.

    • @kikook222
      @kikook222 10 років тому +2

      They have concluded that if we didn't have the medicine that we have today, the murder rate would be 6 times higher due to infections finishing the job. Can't imagine how worse that was in the civil war era, let alone a battle. I do know that in the Roman era you just needed to be knicked by a blade to get an infection from it. Getting a good cut was enough to kill you, given you survive the battle to die from infections/disease.

    • @FlipTheAngryAsian
      @FlipTheAngryAsian 10 років тому

      you also have to look at the powder charge behind it. a 50GI and 50 action express only thing they have in common is the projectile is 50 cal. the old 50 cal muzzle loaders from the civil war were not as powerful as a 50S&w by a long shot. especially if fired from a pistol of equal length.
      Another thing is bullet mass.
      and a 9mmP+ is more than enough to go through a skull from any angle.
      other rounds like 357 sig and 7.62x25 can cause hyrdostatic shock ruining the nervous system around the hole. least more than the usual bullet used in crimes.

    Huh? Who says he shot you twice? He only fires one shot. Besides, he even mentions in the game that it serves him right for using a 9mm. Also, this being 200-odd years past the apocalypse, that's unlikely to be match grade factory ammo he was using. could be it was a shitty low-quality hand-load with bad powder.
    The theories so far are about cranial shots. There have been people shot in the face where the bullet never even made contact with the cranium. It'll still make a mess and knock you out, but that was used for the justification of character customisation: Doc Mitchell had to reconstruct your face and pull bits of bullet out of your head.

    Considering the performance of Maria in-game, the tumbling pattern of the bullet would likely traumatize an entire hemisphere of the brain, triggering almost instant death. Especially if he has Hollow Points loaded. PS, the Geneva conventions don't really apply to the civilian market, seeing as you can buy Hollow Points if you really want to.

    • @adamnichols476

      +Sam Geuvenen Basically these sections of the Geneva convention and others is more like a "gentleman's agreement" to stick to rules that are more humane for the soldiers whose job it is to actually go into combat due to their profession (i.e. on behalf of a nation) rather than other motivating factors.
      Almost all of the items that are prohibited were actually used on a fairly large scale during times of total war before these sorts of conventions were put in place. Getting shot and burning to death from a fire you can't extinguish is not a fun way to go.

      I always thought it was only one shot too. Nowhere in the game does it state you are shot twice. However, being shot in the head WOULD render you unconscious - and then being buried after? I'm more interested to know how deep they buried the character and how long after you are shot that robot waited to dig you out - sounds to me like your character would have suffocated in that time or perhaps bled out rather than dying as a direct result of the bullet itself.

    In my research, I found something interesting. In the final version of the game, Benny only shot once. However, before that cutscene was made, there was a placeholder one that wasnt pre-rendered, wherein benny shot twice. I believe most dialogue that states that it was two shots is leftover from before that change was made.

      Dr. BEES Legate Lanius references that he is shot twice and so does the Forecaster (the little kid with the weird headgear). And, while I haven't seen it personally, I've heard if you look really closely at your character (specifically during the create a character screen) you can see the two scars. Which if it is true, then idk why these guys are guessing where he would've been shot...

  • @1111Tactical

    One mistake, when you said "you are using high caliber full auto weapons as opposed to the simple handgun in Fallout" (paraphrasing), you showed gameplay with an MP9, ironically as it's name suggests it is also a 9mm, no more powerful. Also, there is no indication the 9mm ammo in Fallout is Ball, the more popular pistol cartridges for civilian defense is hollow point and seeing as Fallout is based off off of a 50's style america where the army is using .45 ammo of the real 50's US military or the fictional 12mm pistol, most 9mm ammo found in America would be civilian hollow point style.
    Also, interesting story, my father is an old police officer and his city was one of the few to still have .38 revolvers at the beginning of his service, the .38 is even more prone to unsatisfactory power than a 9mm, he knows a fellow officer who shot a perp in the chest and it deflected off of his sternum 90 degrees upwards, split the tip of his nose and broke a neon sign above him. Another story had a perp shot in the side of his head, the bullet stayed under the skin and didn't penetrate the skull, causing it to follow the curve of his head and lazily drop out of a hole on the exact opposite side of his skull. After my father saw the guy with nothing but two cotton balls stopping the bleeding from small holes in his skin on either side to his head (my dad not aware of the circumstances), he asked:
    "What happened to this guy?"
    "He got shot in the head."
    "Haha, no, seriously"

      Just to note, when you kill the guy who shot you, he's carrying ball rounds.
      Hollow points are explicitly marked.

    • @CaptainConformist
      @CaptainConformist 10 років тому +5

      Most civilian ammunition in the United States in the 50's, and even today is still omni purpose ball ammunition. In the fallout universe, anything that isn't explicitly marked as "9mm round(s)" is a speciality ammunition type such as incendiary, hollow point, or flechette. It would be safe to assume that if something is marked clearly as "9mm round(s)" they are probably a ball ammunition. Also, 12mm pistols exist. That is a .47 calibre. A 12.7mm is a .50 calibre and a 13mm is a .51 calibre.
      Please attempt at least minimal research before attempting to dispute someone who has clearly made a true effort to prove or disprove something.

    • @SykinSora
      @SykinSora 10 років тому +7

      Yea like Drowning Pony said, Hollow Point ammo is in Fallout New Vegas but it isn't the standard ammo you find in the game. The more standard ammo isn't specifically listed as anything so one should assume they are ball rounds. While the two special ammo's are Hollow Point and Armor Piercing and when you get the gun by killing the guy who shot you he only has ball round ammo on him.

    Mentioning the Geneva convention is totally irrelevant as it ONLY applies to war and was thrown out window when the entire world was nuked (the Geneva convention says thats a no-no too by the way). Also, a 9mm round is actually larger slug than most military weapons which generally fire 5.56 or 7.62 mm ammo, but those rounds usually have more powder. Hollow point and jacket rounds will work just fine in any standard 9mm pistol and are available in the game. So, odds are, Benny is shooting a larger, slower bullet that is designed to deform on impact and WONT pass through the skull resulting in the bullet likely only barely breaching the skull and lodging itself in the soft gray matter a couple inches in which coincides with what the doctor says when mentions pulling bits of bullet out of your head.

    • @nnivi2
      @nnivi2 10 років тому +1

      ummm.... you do know that the nuclear arms treaty... was signed AFTER we dropped the nuke on japan. Thats the reason why we signed it. we saw the destruction first hand

    • @grandobsidian
      @grandobsidian 10 років тому +3

      nnivi2 yeah, and it only applies to governments and their armies, it doesnt apply to civilians. And what I said was it doesnt apply to Fallout because one of the terms of the Geneva convention is a ban on thermal and nuclear weapons, and a major event in Fallout is the entire world getting nuked, er go, obviously the governments of the Fallout universe stopped abiding by the convention. Also, it bans flamethrowers which are in the game as US army standard equipment. So, saying the pistol had to shoot ball ammo because the geneva convention says so is 100% bullshit

    • @Themew42
      @Themew42 10 років тому +1

      grandobsidian its just a game not real life seriously the game could make it a parallel universe to ours meaning either a different Geneva convention or no Geneva convention at all .

    • @xXCP1993Xx
      @xXCP1993Xx 10 років тому

      Lol. Not to mention no criminal in history has ever said "I hope you don't terribly mind too much but I have to run to the store before I kill you. All I have is hallow points and turns out the Geneva convention says I have to use ball ammo."

    • @sussurus
      @sussurus 9 років тому +2

      grandobsidian Let's assume that the Geneva Convention was still in effect around the time the bombs fell. Granted, the whole thing was thrown out of the window when they fell, but that's irrelevant considering it was the end of everything and nobody would care about a treaty if it came to that anyway. So all ammo manufactured before the war was manufactured in accordance with the Geneva Convention. This means ammo scavenged post-great war in the Fallout games is this ammo and ammo made post-war is based off of these plans. The Geneva Convention is relevant as it more or less dictates the ammo found in game.
      Themew42 But the two universes were exactly the same up until the 1950s.

    This always gets me about X-Men. In X-Men origins, Wolverine is shot in the front of the head, the frontal lobe, which is dealing with problem solving. Realistically, our Wolverine should get up and forget how to walk, not forget his past.

    • @therealcicknolegrove2173
      @therealcicknolegrove2173 9 років тому

      ***** So what? In the movie he lost his memory and his point is that his frontal lobe doesn't store memory, it manages problem solving.

      ***** Makes sense now, just didn't totally understand your comment.

    • @mordirit8727
      @mordirit8727 9 років тому

      Maybe the memory loss happened on the exit. Exit wounds are usually larger than entry. This is specially true when it comes to close ranged shots, and with larger calibers. The shot to his face was near point blank, and, did you see the size of those adamantium motherbeepers? They were bigger than Matt's unspecified body part!!!
      I think it's possible the bullet entered his brain through the frontal lobe, made it's devastating way to his memory center and then it flew free out of his skull... But whereas the frontal (Entry) damage was small enough for his Healing Factor to fix it as soon as it happened, the damage to his back (Exit) was likely a huge and disgusting crater the movie's PG rating didn't allow on screen. Perhaps the time his power took to patch that up wasn't fast enough to stop a severe trauma from happening, making him lose all of his short and most of his medium term memory.
      This would also explain why he was still functional, as in capable of Speech, walking, dealing with social rules, etc.

    • @krazykalash
      @krazykalash 10 років тому

      It doesn't matter if it is in poor condition, if the ammo is good and the shot actually gets out, it's going to do the same damage, kinda. A worn, shot up M107 can still explode your head, it actually happened in Afghanistan before. A Marine's Barret got shot in the magwell and the internals got damaged but he still used it for months
