This footage came from Dutch tv show Grand Gala du Disque in 1963 in the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, The Netherlands. The host is the well known Willem Duys.
Sarah Lois Vaughan was born in Los Angeles (1924-1990). She is one of the greatest American jazz singers of all times.
Sarah Vaughan was born in a very musical family. Her father Jake was a carpenter and played the guitar and piano. Her mother Ada was a laundress who sang in the church choir. Sarah grow up in a deeply religious family and began playing the piano at the age of seven in the church. Sarah became friends with George Treadwell who also played the trumpet. Later on, George became Sarah’s manager.
This footage came from Grand Gala du Disque in 1963, where something very special happened. During the show, one of the show hosts saw Sarah Vaughan sitting in the audience (unannounced). She suddenly just sits there and even stayed during the break. The show host asked her politely if she wanted to performed and she said yes. But under one condition: she wanted to be accompanied by Douglas Duke, someone she already knew. “ I don’t know what she’s going to sing, I think Duke doesn’t know either. Ladies and gentleman, I would like to draw your attention for the greatest jazz singer, Miss Sarah Vaughan.”
During this unannounced performance she sings: I Can't Give You Anything But Love "Once in a while" and a scat blues

I have listened to a lot of Sarah Vaughan from all her decades of performing and recording - this is amazing! some of her very best !!
Most beautiful voice, another instrument in the jazz band.Perfection.
My God, she was absolutely phenomenal, wasn't she?! I'm getting goosebumps all over my body!
Listen Ella Fitzgerald in the same song and then Say 😁
@@Narahari108 I have heard both Sarah and Ella sing the same songs many times. Both give different but great performances. Both Ella and Sarah are legendary singers who have contributed greatly to the art of jazz singing. They're not in some silly singing competition. Grow up!
My favorite female vocalist of all time 🎶💖🎶 This is a awesome and rare live performance I'd never seen! Thank you for sharing ☺️👍

Just Divine
I died a lil when she said "how can you do that?" :)
Minha cantora americana favorita.
Sarah Vaughan la más grande del jazz.
Thanks for posting this. La Davina!
Sarah was just sitting in the audience and was asked to perform on the spur of the moment, then she proceeds to give this magnificent live performance to a live studio audience and millions of TV viewers. What singer in this current generation of autotuned or lip synched performances would even attempt such a thing?
Fine song Aloha from Hawaii
Bonsoir à tous... 🎙️👍👍👍👍
The bar. 🎵
10:47 that's 18 secs long of sustained A#
Beautiful songs call me.😀
Dang why would you put the ads in the middle of the songs..
Where is this concert? I'm not sure of the language. It is unusual...she never sings with solo organ! Her singing here is AMAZING! But odd that she sits the entire time; I wonder why....
The concert is recorded at the Grand gala du Disque tv show in the Kurhaus, Scheveningen, the Netherlands on Saturday 12 October 1963. In the text above you can see why Mrs Vaughan performed. It was entirely spontaneous.
@@WorldofJazz and that improvisation put Marlene Dietrich in a full stress, as her first song is I Can't Give You Anything But Love, and she understod that she cant performed it better than Sarah. So MD was distracted, you could see it by her performance, that's sad cause there are not a lot video recordings of MD performing...
By the way, does your archive has access to radio concert of Miss Dietrich in Holland 1960 from Tuschinsky, I cant find it in any archive
