In high school, we had one oboist in my school who won a national award and played for an assembly. There was some squeaking, and the rest of the school snickered. I played alto sax at the time and the thought of playing a mouthpiece made of two reeds back to back was wild to me, still is. Woodwind nightmare-mode. I was impressed and wished everyone else understood how difficult that instrument was to play. It's like a classy, less dramatic clarinet. Clear and bold, but utterly unforgiving.
Love the perspective.
I also LOVE your profile pic. “You became sexually aroused in *my* body.”
Why squeaking and snickering?
@@1985cactus With a saxophone, you have a solid mouthpiece, with one reed vibrating against it, and it will squeak easily unless your lip placement is firm and tight. With an oboe, the two reeds don't have a stable surface to sit against. Your mouth has to do all the work or there will be squeaks. The oboist at my school might have been nervous in front of a whole school of people they knew, and there were a few squeaks. I guess most of the school was expecting the performance to be flawless. They just didn't understand what a merciless beast the oboe is.
@@rebdomine1 Thank you. That makes sense. I thought maybe oboe is considered uncool. Which didn't make sense to me
The people who thumbs downed don't know how hard we Obie players have to play the oboe!
Champion Ez IKR!
They are the people who quit playing the oboe. That's why they disliked it.
drain fafnir YAAASSSS
Champion Ez , 3 months old oboist here. My stamina is sooooo bad... I'm in love with the oboe, and I almost quit it 3 times so far... looks like my love for it is greater than the difficulties I'm facing... right now I'm practicing THE SWAN, by Saint-Saens, a duo with piano... ciao!
notallgarbage you're still lucky coz you get to learn it. Oboe is my favourite instrument and I want to learn it so badly. I'm a saxophonist so the closest instrument to Oboe that I could play was Soprano Sax. That's why I learned how to play Sop sax. I noticed they have similar tones. But I still want to learn how to play the Oboe. Is it really that hard?
I think Oboe is the most beautiful instrument.
Baroque oboe; Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli makes me cry.
I like it too, it’s up there with the French Horn as the most beautiful instrument of all time
The most beautiful instrument is the one you play yourself.
@@sunnyd4734 Baroque flute wins because it has all the Bach sonatas, the Bach partita and Telemann fantasias and the CPE Bach sonata and concertos (and I'm not counting Quantz hundreds of works for flute). In the Classical period the flute has 3 Mozart concertos (plus the Andante and 4 quartets).
I've been playing my oboe (named Obi Wan Kenoboe) for seven years now, going on eight, and I swear I STILL can't sound right. This demonstration is amazing!!
Ikr 3 years for me and I still sound like a dying duck
they dont call it "the instrument of madness" for nothing......
I play bassoon and I literally clicked on this without reading the title, and thought it was a clarinet for a split second.
Then I realized it was an oboe.
Its a very beautiful instrument, I love it a lot!
I play the oboe and it was really cool at 2:28 to see the oboist’s choice of fingerings. If I am correct, they were using alternative fingerings to lower their pitch. I do this but I didn’t think professionals did this! Super cool close up!
It’s not an alternative fingering. Are use the E key very often even as I turn the orchestra to a 440. It gives a different clarity to the town that’s easy for the strings to distinguish. It is not to change the pitch. It changes the timbre.
Love these videos. The Philharmonia are my favourite orchestra because of this important work that they do to open up music to everyone.
Thank you! This lovely feedback has made our Monday morning!
Hear , hear ! Keep spreading the message ☺
What a beautiful tone. I love this instrument so much. Oboe concertos are absolutely lovely.
Sean O'Rourke you probably never heard a beginner play it
baroque oboma is my favorite president
Antakshari Imaging omg
Joe Nome // Yes, but I rather like Bill Clarinet.
so ... no one likes Donald J. Trumpet?
I wanted Ben Clarinet
It says much you choose a terrible president.
No one:
Oboists: so let me explain how we make our reeds
Jacob Internet haha
I thought it was a Don't starve reference
Oh this is just too true....
I'd love to play an oboe! The sound is just so unique~
Spectral Nexus wow well then.
Spectral Nexus then buy a used beginner one
funny story, i was looking to stop renting from my local music store, and because my teacher is awesome, he found someone selling one for $300. turns out, it's actually a decent one (i think it's intermediate or professional- my mom never said, just that it was good).
Spectral Nexus I play oboe
Spectral Nexus the cost isnt the only thing that is bad about it. Its the difficulty of the instrument. Ive been playing for 1.5 years and it wasnt an easy one.
There only 2 oboes at our school and I’m proudly one of them 😌
Edit: I quit oboe a year ago and now I play flute 😎 yuh
Chloe I’m the only one in the entire school district😌
Chloe only two cor anglais and im one
Lucky, I’m alone in my school
Me too!
I'm the only Bassoonist at my school of around 600 odd people
To me, this sounds incredibly soulful.
Agreed. Always watery eyes.
Oboe sounds like autumn to me. Kind of lonely sound color. It's good thing :)
what a beautiful description
Same, cosy, beautuful and a bit sad.
Until your reed breaks
😜 That was the most synaesthesia sounding sentence I've read in a long time. Sounds that sound like colors and a season lol. Perfect. 🥰
I know what you mean. It was perfect in The Nightmare Before Christmas... it's so somber and melancholy.
This is fantastic! I have had a life long passion to own and play the oboe after 25 years of flute playing. I'm teaching myself and it is a wonderful instrument. I've just started playing the oboe at my local church. Buffet Crampon Oboe :-)
ive also transferred to playing the oboe as a flute, its very different!
I have begun playing the Oboe this year, and switched from flute. I absolutely love it, it is very hard though. Especially when you switch from a flute and have never even touched a reed in your life!
Do you still play the oboe
@Jake La Tierre: It's from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and can be heard during Act I, no. 9: Finale
Yes, his demo at the end is quite beautiful.
I played flute for three years but oboe is my fav woodwind instrument.
I am a flute and bassoonist so I get to work with a lot of oboe's and they are always the nicest people to be around I wish you all good luck and happy playing
Congratulations for all the orchestra, you're so good and congratulations to Esa-Pekka Salomen for continuing making this orchestra the best.
Thanks for your support Pedro!
I wouldn't mind to have neighbor, who plays an oboe. Such a nice sound.
I looked up this video because I wasn't sure what an oboe sounded like and I had a guess in my head and it was that exact song!!!
*piece
6:12 you didn't finish the octave. It is driving me crazy.
Anyways this is a great video. Very educating. I want to start playing the oboe and I am looking up as much information as I can. This helps me a lot.
Austin Frey, glad to have helped. Good luck should you choose to take up the oboe.
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) I play the clarinet and I suck. My band school teacher give me easy stuff like the c major practice and I failed on the test. Please help me.
Nirmal Sammiicaker If you still need help feel free to message me (I play Clarinet professionally for an orchestra near me and I always love helping people out when I can).
Bryce Porter so I am stuck on all the scale from c major to chromatic scale.
As in what the notes are or how to play them or both?
This is actually the first time I've heard a long glissando on oboe-- wow! I've been playing for nearly 8 years and I still don't really have it down. The flutter tonguing is amazing too (another skill I struggle with, gosh). Cool video!
I kept hearing this sound of instrument in themes and such and I was wondering what instrument it was... now I know! And I knew of the Oboe too. Yay
I love playing my oboe. I find it to be a vey fun instrument to play and very challenging.
It's good to find it challenging as it means there will always be somewhere you can improve, or a goal to aim for. It's even better that you enjoy playing it!
Saint Sean's oboe sonata in D is my favourite. The first movement sounds like, an old man sitting on an armchair recalling his memories of those happy days when he was young.
I dont know why the oboe sound is like something that brings you your best souvenirs
What a lovely instrument! It's such a truthful sound, I can't explain it any other way. SO many of my favorite songs have oboes in them.
NEW INSTRUMENT FILMS: Hi everyone! We’re about to embark on making some new instrument films and we want to hear from you! What instruments do you want to see covered? Reply within the next week! Thanks for watching!
tenor alto and bari sax or euphonium
I seem to be off by one. I tried to learn about OBOE(off-by-one error). still learning about the instrument oboe is still pretty interesting.
Oboe, along with mallet percussion and trumpet, are the prettiest instruments!
This is my instrument!! Love this video! My orchestra repertoire for this term is so much fun, doing Dvoraks Slavonic Dances and Danse Macabre, both super exciting parts! One of my fave oboe parts ever is from Scheherazade :3 its so gorgeous!
THE OBOE IS SO COOL! ITS LIKE THE COOLEST INSTRUMENT! IT BRINGS ME SO MUCH JOY!!!!!
When you don’t know how to play the oboe
*oboi*
Leah Loves Animal Crossing GOLD LOLL
This comment is stolen
also beginner oboists make their instrument sound like an angry duck
I had a dream I was at an orchestra and when the oboe played it was actually a duck and the bassoon was a goose, it was good playing; but a weird dream (Sorry if the this annoys any bassoon or oboe players :P
Nah, my oboe legit sounds like a bagpipe, with the reed sounding like a duck. In fact, in my band, we call ourselves(oboes) the bagpipes, or clarinets on steroids.
It’s like that game oboe oboe bassoon.
In Peter and the wolf the duck was the oboe and the bassoon was the grandpa, also flute was the bird and clarinet the cat.
lol I play Bassoon it doesn't bother me
Lol this is so random sitting here in the comments and everyone's talking about oboe playing and I'm over here like, "Yep. Well, I play clarinet, sooooo...."
Yaaas clarinet players unite!
+Haowei Shi welp, im a brass player sooooo whats up woodwinds!
Kuiper TM yasss winds are the best!!!
Haowei Shi im not even gonna argue XD i love brass and percussion but i like woodwinds also
I play percussion
This guy's explanations are excellent... Congratulations and thanks so much. Shared on Google+
love playing the oboe
Me too, sonny!
Thank you. It's great that you found this useful. Feel free to share this video with those who may also find it informative.
As a composer/conductor, one of my scores features the oboe. :)
It's a fun, spirited piece that highlights the beautiful sound of the oboe. But seriously, if anyone wants the music, just let me know. It's VERY busy in piano, and is influenced by nature, and kids, and the wonder and joy that comes along with children's imagination, plus nature.
As for the demonstration, Philharmonia, thank you for the information!
I remember i watched this video when i started playing the oboe (i played the tenor sax at first, but i wanted to challenge myself with an instrument with double reed) and it helped me a lot!! thx for your efforts!! :)
Oboe good, oboe face... not good.
Liz R the struggle is real :D good thing my face is hidden by the conductor most of the time :P
what
I play the horses
The guy playing the oboe looks so fuckin funny 😂
Beginner oboes are SO loud!!! 😂
Lol!
That is so trye
Beginner saxophones are worse
Beginner violins are the worst. Doesn't sound like anything dying, but the quality! Terribly carved, painted inlay, painted maple or other woods made to look like ebony...
+Black Knight begginer trumpets are 🎺😵🔫
Okay but like why do I not sound like this after 16 years of playing the oboe, my band literally calls me "duck" because of my instrument
Wowww same my classmates call me da dying duck ;-;
Yeah, I play the oboe and they constantly comment on how bad it sounds how much it sounds like a duck (I’ve been playing for around three years) and they don’t believe my band directors of myself when we tell them how hard it is to play it in the first place. Oh well.
Mackey yeah. When you play clarinet, you can’t go a second without someone calling you squidward
Ducks are cute, so it is kinda positive if you think about it 🐥
Mackey, the problem is that oboe is ridiculously freaking difficult to play and to sound good on.
I started out on clarinet and then switched to trumpet, and I have tried my friend's (professional standard) oboe a few times - here to tell you, oboe is extremely demanding for both strength and skill. I mean I /can/ get a pretty good sound out of it, but:
- The start of the note sounds bad and I need to adjust until it sounds good
- It's only one note - forget trying to play anything musical
- After that one note, my cheeks ache and I'm gasping for breath.
And then, look at the oboist in this video:
- Professional, probably second- or third-tier by world standards (which sounds like a diss but is actually paying respect)
- Sounds good, but even an outsider like me can hear a big difference between his sound and the top-tier oboists.
- This is literally his full-time job, and yet you can see the physical strain of just playing a short passage or two to demonstrate.
Again I'm not dissing him - just making the point that the instrument itself is intrinsically really freaking hard to play. So yeah, have some respect from a non-oboist. :-)
We have a new instrument film - EUPHONIUM - coming out on 23 Feb 2018 - make sure you subscribe to be the first to see it! TRAILER: ua-cam.com/video/U1nNyGLD170/v-deo.html
This guy knows how to play. That's why he's in that chair. You didn't book him as an actor. Despite his shyness, he showed us how to do it. That was very good. He deserves a PAY RAISE. (come on...he's too shy to ask for it himself)...You put him into that situation & he was great...how about it ?
What's the name of the song in the beginning of this video... I've heard it a zillion times and now all of a sudden I cant remember.
It's the Swan Theme from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet.
My cousin started playing clarinet in high and transitioned to oboe. He studied at Eastman School of Music as an undergraduate, and at LSU for graduate studies.
I play the clarinet and I'm very interested in playing the oboe:))
** NEW OBOE FILM ** --> Meet Principal Oboe Tom Blomfield as he prepares to perform the Strauss Oboe Concerto in January 2020: ua-cam.com/video/Y-S67w8dcwk/v-deo.html
I've played the oboe since last September
Wonderful! How are you finding it?
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK)
I find it extremely hard to play (but maybe my reed is not good).
This is an instrument you have to cherish and spend a lot of time on.
I got myself a Rigoutat and it's a dream becoming true !
Thanks for your videos
Yes, it's a pretty tricky one, but we hope you enjoy the process of learning and perfecting your technique. All the best of luck!
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK)
I'm gonna enjoy every second. In ten years I'll be sitting next to you ;-)
I have watched this so many times. Like at least 12 times.
my fav piece with an oboe solo is polovtsian dances, such a beautiful sound!
I am in six grade and I am the only oboe player in six grade. It is a fun instrument.
That's great!
Yes it is fun
I were a great lover of flute but when i discovered this oboe , it became my favorite
Oboe:An instrument that requires an extreme amount of lung stamina and is loud, relative to many other woodwinds.
Beautiful sound when played correctly
I've always been interested in this instrument but it's way too expensive :(
My favourite instrument
Quite strange to see a professional oboist puff out his cheeks and the rest of his embouchure while he plays. One has much better pitch, volume, and articulate control by setting the embouchure and keeping it in.
His glissandos and flutter tonging are phenomenal though.
I think it shows that there's no such thing as the "perfect technique" for any instrument. Different people have different weaknesses and strengths.
it's probably just circular breathing
I looked through the comment sections and glad to know that I’m not the only oboe
I've always loved the sound of this instrument.
I want to switch from Tenor saxophone to oboe, should I do it?
It is much easier to switch from saxophone to clarinet
+Dalice McAda most sax players can begin on the clarinet
+FreeBird212 So sorry the way it is in my town you just start on you instrument and then you switch to another instrument, so sorry
+Dalice McAda it's fine you didn't do anything wrong :)
I was learning how to play clarinet by myself and Tenor sax in band, and I just wanted to play oboe...
He seems so calm.
When he says "I'll try now," it sounds involuntary.
Can I switch from flute to oboe?
SushiLover Puff I switched from flute to oboe and it was pretty easy!
SushiLover Puff No. It is a federal offense and could result in lifetime imprisonment with no chance of parole.
I play a 2nd Clarinet . I was planning to get one next year when I am in jazz band. Bu t now I'm not so sure anymore because that seems pretty hard to play. But I think I will get use to it if i play the oboe.
I play the oboe:)
the oboe is a fantastic instrument!:-D
Can you guys do bass clarinet?
You can find our bass clarinet film here: ua-cam.com/video/jSZtX3WHF_E/v-deo.html - enjoy!
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) do you have any on tenor or alto saxes?
I will have played oboe for four years this fall, and I'm definitely still learning. Stuff like making the middle "c"s not as terrible and getting the upper notes in tune. I'm also bugging my director to let me play the cor anglais (we call it the English horn in our country though) for Isle of Calypso. I would love to learn vibrato and double tonging, but that's for when I more time.
That's brilliant, you have a good mindset. Any musician, regardless of experience, should always believe that there is something left to learn, you will be better for it. There's no quick way around practice, but if you enjoy learning and developing your abilities, who's to say it can't be just as enjoyable. Good luck
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) Thank you very much. Practicing was a chore for the first couple of years of playing because of how boring the music was. I would literally play quarter notes for six measures then rest for twenty four. Practices actually started getting interesting once the solos and melodies start coming in. Not to mention the different techniques that I have to use besides tonguing quarter notes. Sorry for the late reply, and I will be looking forward to more double reed videos!
+Jordan Miller I suggest, you get used to a bit of a harder reed. The reeds are very loud. You will most likely here oboes, or clarinets (I have 17 clarinets).
I'm supposed to be doing oceanography homework right now, but oh well
It's very great to see a video like this explaining the oboe in more detail! I really could've used this information when I started playing a few years ago, but even now (After 3 years) I was able to learn a lot!
Love the. Oboe !!!
So do we Ronald! You might enjoy this video featuring our Principal Oboe, Tom Blomfield: ua-cam.com/video/Y-S67w8dcwk/v-deo.html
Thanks for your comment!
that eye contact was intense
5:47
Even though I seem to play my two clarinets (B-flat and e-flat alto) more now, I love playing the oboe whenever I do. Sure the double reed is a challenge to not sound like a duck, but I find the fingering system on the oboe much easier than the clarinet and its annoying break between registers. Harder instrument to get a sound (compared to the clarinet) but I find it easier to physically play.
I play trumpet and cornet
♪I know I'm not the only one♪
Trumpet, and soon euphonium
I play trumpet flute clarinet tuba oboe guitar piano bass drums. I'm flute in one band. Obie in an orcastra for beginners and youth. And guitar in jazz band, the rest is just for fun
+Halliebear Fraighttraighn and I'm 12. But I'll get older and as I get older I'll play better at all these
+Letty T oh, I hadn't thought of that, at least I didn't put my phone number or address on there lol. I've seen people do that
Halliebear Fraighttraighn 👏👏
This now makes me want to play the oboe
such a great sounding instrument, but the embouchure is weird
I call it fusion of clarinet and flute
What's the song he played at the beginning?
Hi, Elizabeth! It's from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and can be heard during Act I, no. 9: Finale.
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) thank you!
Great stuff, Katie! We hope to see you at a concert sometime! Keep up the playing!
did u see them??!!??!?!?
I have a question. How are chair positions determined in such high level environments? I can’t imagine that there’s much difference in talent, skill, and technique in a professional setting, so how do we determine that this guy is only second chair?
That was beautiful
I play the oboe
Me two!
same
I play clarinet and I’ve always wanted to play a oboe
Over the Rainbow would sound so beautiful on an oboe 🌈
Is it possible to do circular breathing on an oboe or is the necessary pressure too high?
I like how with every action he tags on "it's quite difficult".... lol
+Sydney Ortiz It is a difficult instrument though. I play all the woodwinds (except bassoon family) and oboe is the most challenging. Even the english horn is easier than the oboe because it's larger, and less sensitive if that makes sense.
Matthew Lin I play the oboe too; I probably should have mentioned that haha. I've also played flute and a little clarinet but I can't imagine anything being as hard as the oboe.
proudest fap
Thanks man this really help me better play:)
Kenny G looks so different with short hair
He is really good! Then again, you have to be pretty good to be a professional oboist and to be 2nd chair in a major orchestra!
I am learning how to play the oboe
tomorrow i will get my oboe i have a cane at home to make reeds and double reeds
I started playing oboe and D,D flat ,and E flat are the hardest to get out. Like I can't get them out at all. And my teacher makes me feel so bad yet I'm teaching myself....
Thank you
