Many years ago (in 1998, I believe), I worked at the K-Mart in the small Tennessee town I lived in. I worked with one of the most fascinating (and kind) people I've ever known, a man named Wayne. He was a former concert pianist of 20-something years. He had worked at half a dozen opera houses around the world over his career. We talked about music in many, if not most of our conversations. At the end of that year, he gave me a Christmas present of a handful of CDs of his favorite recordings of much of the music he had shared with me. My one significant contribution to our many discussions of classical music, was when I told him about how "Gabriel's Oboe" was one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I'd ever heard. His response was to gently correct my pronunciation of "Ennio Morricone," and to tell me that he was in a New York bar one evening, many years earlier, talking music through the night with Mr. Morricone. Of all the videos of this beautiful piece there is no better than this by this gentleman. Ennio Morricone will be remembered for this piece for centuries to come!!
Okay I came across this video about a year ago by accident when I was doing my school homework. I was in complete shock of how beautiful and breathtaking this song was and instantly I felt a connection with it. A few weeks later I mentioned the song to my band teacher. She said she had heard of it and that it was beautiful. A few weeks after that I had a lesson with her (I play oboe myself) and she was stressing about the music selection for our concert. I (without thinking) offered the idea of performing this piece... she loved it. She told me we would perform this piece and I was over the moon exited. That was a year ago and now in three days I will be performing this beautiful work of art as an oboe soloist accompanied by my middle school band. This song, this oboist, even the conductor and the band sparked something within me so strong I had no idea I could even feel. I love this song with all I have and I hope to do it justice on our concert.
I, like you, played oboe once when I was in middle school. However, unlike you, I didn't love the instrument, I thought it produced the most annoying sound ever... The only reason I played it in middle school was because my band teacher told me I had a talent for it. Apparently not everyone can play this instrument, let alone produce a sound from it. The reason I'm telling you this is because just recently I listened to this piece and it made me shed a couple tears. Believe me, I am not a person who cries, I usually surpress my emotions, but something unexplainable happened... Hearing the beautiful sounds of the oboe took me back. It was as if the instrument want to prove to me just how wrong I was. This is a beautiful instrument, difficult to master, yes, but just be patient. It is one that requires patience, only then can you unlock it's heavenly sounds. I regret putting the oboe down 10 years ago, I was simply a naive little boy. I can see that I'm about a month late on this reply, sorry. I hope your concert went well. Don't forget to cherish these moments and believe in your self. Don't give up on oboe as I did. Best of luck buddy. I sincerely wish you the best.

Same. And I incorporated so much Henrik's version that when I listen to another one and there's no glissando (not sure this is the correct term, I mean the switch from a lower note to a higher one) at the end I'm like?
I agree with you. Beautiful sensitivity, awesome sustain on the notes that are just begging for it and a complete engagement with the orchestra.. Music is a wonderful and mysterious thing.

My father died in 2020- so, in the midst of all that silliness in that year, he requested for my brother to play this song at his funeral- it was banned, because it was deemed dangerous - he recorded it instead, and as our father planned and wished, it was played- and both of them got to rejoice that this piece of music absolutely represented the two of them x
@@anabellecorrigan-musicteac5120 I don't think the song itself was banned, it was just that a live performance of it would have required the brother to take off their mask if they were going to play the oboe, which would have risked the spread of COVID.

@@briansephton8777 I have come to believe that the essence of this song is beauty. And beauty is God... and that's why it goes straight to our souls... it speaks to the hunger deep within, for beauty, for love. And the beauty of this melody is such that it pierces the veil of noise and distraction that is this world... leaving us pining for God, for Beauty and Love Itself.
My uncle faithfully served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years. Sadly, he passed away from a heart attack recently, and this song was played at his funeral. I’m so thankful for the times that I had with him and that I will always have this beautiful song to remember him by.💔

To me, the most beautiful instruments are oboe and euphonium. In fact, there is a version of this piece on UA-cam played on euphonium, by David Childs. Check it out, it's beautiful.
I just started playing the oboe, and I know it will take me years to reach his amount of skill, practice, and hard work but I hope I can one day sound as good as him.
You will! With dedicated and humble practice, you will be rewarded with the means to produce this magical sound on your instrument. Faith, practice, and taking joy in the process!
My dad played this every night to almost perfection on his flute when I was a small child late into night. Makes me smile and tearful in equal measure . Beautiful piece .
I think Mr Ennio Morricone must have experienced something supernatural, divine, when he started composing this beautiful and unique piece of music. It's so special! Each time I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes, not of sadness, but of something so special that I cannot describe it. God bless him.
+j parks The Church is not evil. We humans are the ones who let evil work within us if we let it. Are you perfect? Have you never committed any simple errors deliberately knowing that you could make a better choice, even if you knew it for a second? Have you ever experienced joy when someone forgave you for something? I am glad to know that even with my imperfections I am called to convert and become a better person, a better Christian every day. Because of the mercy that I know has been granted to me, then I can be merciful towards others. If you really saw the movie, you would see it portraits reality as it was... with it's good side and bad side and how wonderful it was that many Jesuits gave their lives to protect the indigenous people of that region, how they respected their believes, how they respected each other. I would invite you to see the movie with an open heart and mind. Anyway, music is a gift and, indeed, beautiful when that talent is well used. Take care and happy new year 2016. :-)
mr. parks im an agnostic but i have to disagree with you the roman catholics and jesuits have done a lot of good things but its not pure because it has humans behind it. there are no such things as evil unless one human has no intention of being good .
His control of the upper register is incredible. He'll make the high A sound completely warm and beautiful, even though it is very difficult to give high notes that type of texture and sound. They don't sound stringy or out of tune like every other oboe player including me would make them. You really have to appreciate his skill.
Aniarable Channel part of it has to do with the reed. If you scrape it just right you can make a reed capable of doing that. But you also have to practice a lot to be able to play like that.
When I listen to this rendition of this beautiful song, I'm ever reminded of the everlasting and compassionate love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has for me. I will never be out of His loving embrace.
I grew up listening to Ennio Morricone's music. I never tire of listening to his breath taking soundtracks. I'm sad he died, I wish he could have lived forever.
When I listen to this beautiful music I not only get goosebumps but it also brings tears to my eyes. How someone can compose this kind of music is beyond me. I could listen to Gabriel's Oboe all day long and would never get tired of it. As a matter of fact when it comes to the end I start all over again. Beautiful!
Such a simple tune that is yet the most beautiful sound I have ever heard. Brings tears to my eyes. That man, the myth, he created so many 'sounds' that haunt you for years.
When a piece of music can allow you to close your eyes and feel your soul elevated so you want to stay in that moment, you've been blessed. This rendition of E. Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe preformed by Mister Henrik Chaim Goldschmidt and The Faroe Islands Philharmonic Orchestra takes me there. THANK YOU for making this piece more than music.

Yes! I put the theme to the mission at the top of my list and listen to it daily. I also like Yo-Yo Ma's rendition as well. I want this to be the last thing I hear as life slips away in my time. I swell with emotion every time I listen.
This playing by Henrik Chaim Goldschmidt is, in my humble opinion, absolute perfection! Such beauty, control, emotion, warmth, truly incredible, and a million times better than the playing in the film's soundtrack. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Yes, it is a fantastic piece of music. I lost my mom a few days ago. While driving with my Spotify on random this fantastic playing of a uknown to me great music. I got goosebumpsI, broke in tears and had to pull aside full of emotions unable to drive for a few minutes.

If humanity just stopped and we all listened to this beautiful piece of music maybe we would appreciate how incredible and blessed we are to make such music and maybe we could stop killing eachother
This was played at my mom's funeral afterparty, or whatever the correct term is, and it was just right. Her guardian angel was Gabriel and this piece just made sense. It will follow me to my own end. Bless you, mom, wherever you may be and thank you for all your support, kindness and for being you. I will miss and love you always. May you be forever surrounded by whomever you always desired to be surrounded by, and may they appreciate your company at least half as much as I have always done and ten thousand times as much as I love and miss you.
Listening to this for the first time I realised I was familiar with the peice and was expecting the high note to sing out really powerfully, so when it softly floated out like that it was just this beautiful surprise that brought me to tears.
OK ... I often listen to this piece, played by this man, and almost always, it reduces me to a blubbering mess. I'm not going to analyse why. I'm just going to keep enjoying the tone, the soul, the dynamics and the intimate camerawork of this performance. One day, I want a make friend who is an oboist. Whoever it is will have to be a good friend ... one who doesn't mind if ask ... please play that again! Being Ennio Morricone is sublime ... Being Henrik Goldschmidt is a gift. Thank you.
You wrote everything, Sir. You are perfectly right. This piece is a blessing, it is so well played here and the conductor really helps to make the sounds fly...
Ive heard well over a dozen different people play this song and this one is by far the best------it's also a minute longer than others. That slower tempo and increased duration is so critical to sustain certain notes longer to elevate the listeners feelings to a higher measure making the entire experience so dramatic and moving to the heart.
In school I played the oboe too. I felt the same way you expressed. I went to a huge school and remember there being so many that played the snare drum, saxophone, clarinet and flute... We used to perform a mini solo for a grade and I'd get a little embarrassed because my instrument (sound) was so different than everyone else's. Over time I learned and realized this is a beautiful sounding instrument and not the easiest to learn and master. I encourage you to keep at it, if you enjoy playing. Look up oboe orchestra solos for inspiration.
I had the same experience. I wish now that I had the maturity to take it more seriously. All the violins and cellos and french horns all exist mostly to serve the oboe.
I feel very blessed to find this in 2024. I am 91 and needed to hear this in troubled times. Thank you.

Hi there in the Faroe Islands! :)
One of the greatest composers ever.
Of all the videos of this beautiful piece there is no better than this by this gentleman. Ennio Morricone will be remembered for this piece for centuries to come!!
❤
Ennio Morricone. Passed away today at the age of 91. May he Rest in Peace, and may his music live on. Gratitude for his awesome music.
I didn't know that. thank you
Our goal in this life is to leave the world a little better than we found it . Mr Morricone succeeded …
Music is magic. Enjoy your performance with your friends!
Maria, can someone record this so you can post it to You Tube? We would love to hear it!
I'm sure you did.
so how did it went?
I Am just a country boy from Southeast Alabama USA first time hearing this instrument played. But my god what a wonderful sounding wind instrument. Thanks so much for sharing this with us out here in Southeast Alabama, USA.!☮️❤️

Same. And I incorporated so much Henrik's version that when I listen to another one and there's no glissando (not sure this is the correct term, I mean the switch from a lower note to a higher one) at the end I'm like?
I totally agree beautiful ❤️
I agree with you. Beautiful sensitivity, awesome sustain on the notes that are just begging for it and a complete engagement with the orchestra.. Music is a wonderful and mysterious thing.
Yes, he and the orchestra are absolutely sublime. So breathtakingly beautiful beyond words! 😢😊
This is a beautiful version, I recommend the Ryan Anthonys performance of it on a piccolo trumpet for his own concert CancerBlows.
the greatest theft of the Academy of the Oscars, Morricone only had the misfortune of being born Italian, music that touches the heart

Un abrazo.
Hoe beautiful.
I dearly hope you're doing better now xxx
Banned? Dangerous? Goodness... This is some of the most light-embodied music out there. I am sorry for your circumstances.
@@anabellecorrigan-musicteac5120 I don't think the song itself was banned, it was just that a live performance of it would have required the brother to take off their mask if they were going to play the oboe, which would have risked the spread of COVID.

I tear up every. single. time. It’s just so beautiful.

Also we should not forget Mr. Goldschmidt's masterful rendition of this.

R.I.P Maestro Morricone . You will live forever through your music
Beautifully played, one of if not the most emotive pieces of music ever written
I just started playing the oboe, and I know it will take me years to reach his amount of skill, practice, and hard work but I hope I can one day sound as good as him.
You will! With dedicated and humble practice, you will be rewarded with the means to produce this magical sound on your instrument. Faith, practice, and taking joy in the process!
This is my favorite oboe solo ever written.

I think Mr Ennio Morricone must have experienced something supernatural, divine, when he started composing this beautiful and unique piece of music. It's so special! Each time I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes, not of sadness, but of something so special that I cannot describe it. God bless him.
Yes it's heavenly music.
RikiSmiley Exactly!
mr. parks im an agnostic but i have to disagree with you the roman catholics and jesuits have done a lot of good things but its not pure because it has humans behind it. there are no such things as evil unless one human has no intention of being good .
Amen, amen!
His control of the upper register is incredible. He'll make the high A sound completely warm and beautiful, even though it is very difficult to give high notes that type of texture and sound. They don't sound stringy or out of tune like every other oboe player including me would make them. You really have to appreciate his skill.
Aniarable Channel, years and years of practice! And did I mention years of practice? Beautiful playing!
Aniarable Channel part of it has to do with the reed. If you scrape it just right you can make a reed capable of doing that. But you also have to practice a lot to be able to play like that.
Most likely he has played this hundreds of times over an over. Practise makes a master.
His instrument is also fully automatic. A puchner i remember, very rarely
Play with yourself.
We used “Gabriel’s Oboe” as our wedding processional. I still tear up every single time I hear it.

OK ... I often listen to this piece, played by this man, and almost always, it reduces me to a blubbering mess. I'm not going to analyse why. Me too. And I've never seen the movie. It's just that this music reverberates in my soul.
The man has accomplished his mission.

I’m the only one and in my band class that plays the oboe.I feel left out lol but watching stuff like this makes me feel like I’m not alone, you know?
Would not have expected the Oboe to be such an unpopular instrument. It's sound is just incredible.
