I should never play these hey? Well you can't tell me what to do Nizzahon! As we speak, I am definitely constructing a Vintage Zombie tribal deck just to make it so that all of these cards will make it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"! That will show you!
It wouldn’t be the first time a Black Lotus or Mox Jet would be used to cast some of these cards, as some of them were in the old PC game 😅

The crazy thing about Mindless Null is that Zenikar was such a fast format that Mindless Null would be played
not like first pick but it is a real card in draft that you would play as your 23rd because the format had so many 1 and 2 drop vampires
Most of the time in zendikar it was right to play 18 lands, sometimes even 20 if you have lots of landfall.
It was a very sad draft when you need to play it, but i deffinitelly recall it being bad but playable.
Braid of Fire with Balduvian Fallen might be some low tech synergy
Crazy, I thought the same thing. I mean, if you *really* want to play Balduvian Fallen for some reason
4/1's without that "deathtouch-like" ability would usually kill (and get killed by) most creatures anyway.
Also, the fact that it can only attack means that the opponent will always choose what to trade with.
I used to play Dripping Dead as a kid! I loved the art, but yes, these days I acknowledge it is horrendous🤣

Dripping Dead really made me sad when i read it, such a sick artwork wasted on such an awful effect.
I saw the title, and said "9 cards and Derping Dead." I looked at the art in the thumbnail, and recognized Derping Dead. Gee, I wonder what #1 could be? Legions was a great concept for a set, but in practice it was absolutely a terrible idea, because frankly, Wizards isn't good for that many functional creature designs for a given set. After a while, you end up with a bunch of mediocre to miserable cards, and the Dead? That felt like a case of "we need one last card, we have no time to test it, the only thing we can do is make it so bad it'll never get played, so we know it can't cause problems."
If that were really the case they would have made it vanilla. Anything that is unique has a shot of being broken depending on context.
Murk Dwellers + Tawnos's Wand was a combo in one of the Shandalar AI decks, and it was quite annoying if your plan was blocking, because it presented a much faster clock than Tawnos's Wand could normally produce. I point this out mainly to show how it's not *entirely* worse with it only temporarily getting +2/+0.
I'm surprised there isn't a Ghastly Remains on this list. If we want to talk about ineffecient statlines, how about a 3 mana 0/0?
Even in a deck full of zombies, hard to have enough cards in hand to make it's amplify worth anything, since zombies are usually pretty good at dumping their hand thanks to the amount of good 1-drops. It's self-recuring ability is basically useless, since if you're even considering using it, you're probably topdecking and so it will come in with a criminally useless body. Plus, the decision is pre-draw, so you won't know if your hand will support it.
On the topic of bully, I can kinda see it as a kind of aristocrats card, where its goal it to kill your own stuff for death triggers (like, say, beating up Gravecrawler over and over to fire off Plague Belcher)...however, this is the same tribal that has cards like Carrion Feeder, Nantuko Husk, and a few other I can't be bothered to look up, so it doesn't even serve well in that capacity.
Eh, Aphetto Vulture could make the cut in limited just for having flying and 3 power. That was a big deal back when creatures were worse.
Well, one thing all cards on the list have in common is that they are all about 20+years old
At least Murk Dwellers has that cool Drew Tucker art.
Drew Tucker's style can be really good on some cards but terrible on others, personally I think this is one of the terrible ones.
One of the most underrated artists the game ever had. Such a shame everything had to be streamlined.

Lure on Dripping Dead isnt even that good since you now have to deal lethal damage to a creature before you can assign damage to the next. This ability is a triggered ability, not a static ability like Deathtouch. Even at maximum efficency, it only can kill 4 things and 3 of those have to have 1 toughness. This makes its trigger literally useless.
the mindless null was supposed to be a 2 mana 2/2 with downside but a mistake got through R&D and was just never fixed
I wouldn't doubt that they just blanket increased the mana cost of like 10 random commons in the set, didn't bother to proofread, and backpedaled when called out.
I believe Mindless Null was supposed to cost 1 less and Vampire Nighthawk was supposed to cost 1 more.
It wasn't that it was "never fixed". A mistake was made and then they kept it, playtested it, and made it part of the set. Mistakes like this have plenty of time to get noticed.

6:30 Chippy has some of my favorite artwork and I don't know why. The artwork of Grim Monolith is part of the reason I like it so much. I can't really explain it.
Phyrexian Prowler could only buff to 5/5 so it's even worse? Since if you remove all 3 before your upkeep it'll then get sacrificed (though I guess it's technically correct that you can make it into a 6/6)
If someone wants to send a 6/6 into my prowler, I would gladly make that trade.
The art on Reclusive Wight and Dripping Dead are so hardcore. What a waste.

Alright, let's get started.
10. A good friend and I once split the finals of a very strange and terribly ran 5th Dawn pre-release; he had 6 Blind Creepers and didn't drop a game the entire day.
9. In 90's kitchen table Magic, Murk Dwellers and Tawnos' Wand was something you needed to be aware of.
8. Yeah this card is terrible. Even during Onslaught we knew it was a bad rate.
7. Never played....vanilla creatures are just better.
6. I did play this in Coldsnap draft....5 toughness is huge. Plus callback to Soul Burn from Ice Age.
5. I didn't play this set, but I can't remember any way to make this playable...Cemetery Gate?
4. In Rav/Rav/Rav draft, you could get into the GBU dredge deck, with Woodwraith Strangler helping hold down the ground while setting up the late game. It wasn't necessary or overly good, but could be useful.
3. Reclusive Wight.....I also didn't play during this time, but this is the kind of trash black card I would build around. Tons of removal and discard and these kind of creatures. I did not say it was good.
2. Mindless Null. Good ol' number 22.(often played 18 lands as the norm in Zendikar due to landfall.) I drafted a ton of Zendikar, and filling the curve was so important that I've started this guy on multiple occasions. Loved that draft format.
1. I got nothing. Never seen this guy hit the table. Excellent #1.

With Friends, you can agree to change the "4" colorless mana to 1 single black Mana.. That would be an interesting design Tournament... Bad Cards that can be corrected to be good.... Is just an idea....
As for number 1, it's very obsoleted by cards like Feral Abomination, Harvester of Souls, Maze Abomination, Soul of Innistrad, and Topaz Dragon.
It was obsolete even when it was new. InQuest rated it as the worst card in Legions when the set first released. And Legions had plenty of less than stellar cards.
As a kid, I loved so many awful cards. Scaled Wurm comes to mind. But even as a kid, I thought Cyclopean Mummy was abysmal. 1b for a 2/1 that gets 'exiled' when it dies in the color that embraces graveyard magic? It wasn't even a zombie back then either, just a lowly mummy. Art was cool though.
If you put a lure effect on Dripping Dead it's still a lot worse than deathtouch right? You still have to assign full combat damage to each blocker in sequence. It can't assign 1 to each blocker and kill them all.
Aphetto smells reasonable for draft. Self recurring top end? seems good to me!

I'm still grumpy about Strangler showing up on these lists; to my knowledge, it's the only card in the game that lets you exile your graveyard one card at a time. I'm aware that doesn't make it good in a general sense, but it's a hilarious Tormod/Konrad enabler if the former is partnered with something green.
As for Phyrexian Prowler, it doesn't make it GOOD but the idea is to use the ability as a threat to deter attacks/blocks, I think. The turn you play it you can eat up to a 6 toughness attacker, and it can swing through up to 5 toughness and trade at worst. Again, still bad, but.
Some of this awful cards have wonderful art and impressive name! Such a wasted opportunity

Dripping Dead is certainly awful, but that artwork is great.
I have a truly disturbing number of dripping deads rotting in my collection. Not even playable in casual kitchen table collection building.

I remember when the camp counselor who taught me Magic let me have Dripping Dead from his bulk becasue I thought it looked cool as hell.
Even as a new player I quickly realized why.
fun fact: mindless null was actually supposed to be two mana, but someone messed up when the card was sent to the printer, so it ended up being the second worst zombie in the game.
It wasn't when set to the printer. It was during design. They say the mistake, said "It's ok to have a bad creature in this already fast format", and had plenty of time to test it.
I like the art on Murk Dwellers
Man, so many of the 6 cost zombies are terrible Anurik Murkdiver, Jhessian Zombies, Dripping Dead, etc.
At least Jhessian Zombies cycles into a Swamp or Island. I always liked the art, too.
Jhessian Zombies definitely isn't a bad card. Hard to make a list like this when you can be cycled.
i agree all the these are bad in a vaccum, but i would have put spitefully bully at #10 as the least bad, it can at least be used in some sort of combos like you said with stuffy or stormwild capidor, or be negated entirely by mark of the asylum which would at least make it useable in sitation for a deck designed to take advantage of it. where as every other card is going to be trash no matter what you do to it.. you CAN at leasd make a postive effect come from its "downside"
I think the logic "it has a niche therefore it is better than cards that don't have a niche" is a trap that I see a lot of people apply when evaluating the rankings of cards these videos. If you are jumping through hoops in your deck-building just to make a bad card "useable", you have actually made your overall deck WORSE since your crappy card is dragging down the quality of the rest of the deck in order to make it's ginormous downside somewhat useful.
Even if you argue "I'm running a Stuffy Doll deck anyway and just need one last card to round out the deck", it still does nothing unless very specific synergy pieces are in play which is the hallmark of a bad card (unless maybe said card is part of a game winning combo). The small number of situations where this is OK do not outweigh the far more numerous situations this literally does nothing.
@@adamgalloy9371 that doesn't matter a niche card is always more useful than an *unusable* card. its *not* a mistake it generally IS better. you also are ignore the fact that not MTG is a game.. and not everyone who plays it is some "hyper competitive person" who wants to play in tournaments and only runs the best cards. its has people who see a card good or bad and comes up with thier own unique idea for a deck with it.
if you were making a deck based around things like stuffy doll and stormwild capidor, it would make sense to run self damaging cards. as they can combo.
any deck using said card is going to have a way to make it work. be it, mark of asylum, or said cappy or stuffy or something else.. if your deck is based around pingning your own creatures for an effect this card is an amazing value. a 3 mana 2/2 with upside, or at worst.. no downside
NOTHING ELSE on this list ( with perhaps the exception of the cumulative upkeep ones which can combo with a braid of fire even comes close to having any possible use. there are no combos to make the card anything but as bad as it is..
what makes it MUCH better than the rest is you CAN make a work that will take advanage of it.
your not making an overall deck "worse" you made a deck based on pinging your own stuff for benefit and a 2 mana 3/3 that does this every turn for no mana investment... is fantastic in such a deck. people arn't going to use ANY of these cards in deck they are "making to try to be the best deck". the are putting them in decks as combo peices that function with a deck theme.. and to have fun playing said deck. win or lose to have fun.. and quit frankly.. out of all the cards to combo with an awesome card like stormwild capidor. giving it +3+3 in counters every single turn puts your opponent on a VERY fast clock. and its not some combo you need to wait until turn 5 to get out like suffy
by turn 4 you are swining for 4 in the air.. by turn 5 at least 7 and by turn 6 thats lethal.. with 2 cards staying on the feild.. thats NOT a bad combo. and keeping it place on upkeep turn 3, such as playign a creature turn 2 you want to have die for upside or something simple like squee's toy. you can totally make a deck around this kind of thing. every other card.. not so much.. this card has WAY more combo potential than every other card here. and when used correctly in such a combo its a 2 mana 3/3 with upside.. for casual gameplay. with fun deck thats absolutely huge

When I was really little I didn't have very many MTG cards at all. I distinctly remember Dripping Dead was one of the few high CMC cards I owned and I was convinced it had to be good just because it cost so much to cast. I should have just stuck with my copy of Twisted Abomination, still not amazing, but 100x better than that thing.
Spiteful bully nowadays would be a 3/4 with the same effect, making it a 3/1 for two mana which is quite common and a 3/4 if you manage to use it's effect without losing anything
Spiteful Bully ALMOST makes combo with Wall of Souls... This damage doesn't count as combat damage though
Dripping Dead is even worse than Deathtouch for another reason: it's a triggered ability, meaning the damage has to happen before the lethality kicks in, meaning it's not allowed to assign a single point of damage as "lethal" before assigning damage to additional blockers. So a single x/4 tanks all the damage, unlike a 4 power Deathtoucher than can kill 4 blockers pretty much every time.
Here I thought Rotting Mastodon would have made the list; a 5 mana 2/8 vanilla zombie sounds pretty miserable to me.
I mean, at least it blocks a lot of things well, and 2 power is enough to get rid of most small creatures, so if you're facing a mono red aggro deck, then it can put in work, which is more than can be said for the cards on this list.
@@genzo454 I mean, at 5 mana though I imagine there are slightly stronger options. Two power's not something I would want to pay five mana for, even in a Black reanimator deck.
@@notgonnasay09 Well in constructed it's def overshadowed, but in limited you might occasionally pick it if you have nothing else.
all these worst videos really make you glad that they don't design magic like this anymore. sure, now we have creature power creep which produces bad downsides like extremely format warping chase mythics like ragavan or dockside extortionist. but at least we don't have absurdly bad draft commons that you have to jump through 15 hoops to make even almost efficient
I don't know why you think Mindless Null is so bad. It's really bad, but it's still an ogre, which is better than most of these other zombies.
Phyrexian prowler is pretty garbage but proliferating him to high hell to have fading counters go up could be at least a usable tech. It’s a build around card

Dripping dead isn't even that good with lure effects,
cause here you can't assign 1 lethal damage per creature like you do with deathtouch

@@benwilson6256 In the commander supplement. Name of card is Marie the Killing Quill. Mono black. Is not a mercenary but grants them Deathtouch and with a bit of jiggery pokery, when they deal combat damage to an opponent, you get two treasures. Also works with Asassins and Rogues.
I think Mercenaries are due for a bit of a come back tbh. The searching lesser creatures deal was weak in its block vs rebels but could be great in another set or in commander.

I think Balduvian Fallen is a little less bad than it's place on the list. Probably still *on* the list, but not 6th. It's stats, including the "bonus", would probably be playable in a draft/sealed format; on the first turn you attack with it, it's basically a 5 mana 4/5 with a distributed mana cost, which isn't as unplayably bad as some of the other stat lines. As the top curve in an agressive limited deck, you hope to win (or force them to trade with it) before CU gets past 3 mana and you have to look at saccing it. Still bad enough to be on the list (because as you point out in a lot of limited videos, "hoping" things line up like that isn't a safe play), but I think it has more potential than some of the other creatures at 10-7 on the list.

I must be a mad scientist but I'm looking at Balduvian Fallen with some pretty janky Sultai eyes...Kodama, Giada's Gift and some walkers? Seems fun.
As bad of a card as Murk Dwellers is, it won me many games in MTG Shandalar until I was able to win some better cards. That game is brutal starting out on wizard difficulty.
I had a budget deck with Blind Creeper in Betrayers of kKmigawa standard, Suicide black, for a novice, it was a good deck

As I said in the intro if you see a creature with a non-zombie type written on the card rest assured it has the type as a result of errata.
Well top1 says that those creatures can't be regenerated so it has some benefit above dt xd

The order of the list is a bit off. The ones that can have decent stats on the turn you can play or the Bully have synergies, for example in sacrifice decks that care about power and toughness. The four mana 2/2 with +2/+0 unblocked has no synergy and no uses in EDH. You have to remember for EDH that synergy is everything. Bad cards can be used effectively (if inefficiently) in good synergies. Below rate vanilla cards really can't be used for anything, even if they would be the better (terrible) choice in limited.
I try to balance how good the card would be in EDH with how bad it is elsewhere. Murk Dwellers is definitely better in Limited than Spiteful Bully, for example. The Dwellers was also closer to playable as a creature back when it was printed. But yeah, If I focus in on EDH only, yes, the Bully is better.
@@NizzahonMagic Ok. Thanks. I respect your decision. I just feel like in limited you would play an extra land vs almost any of these but crazy people in edh probably would play some kind of Bully Enrage deck so it really only could see play in one format where the Murk Dwellers not really either. Maybe that's way off, I don't know.
But then that's only because it isn't a serious format. Maybe your order IS better for that reason. :)

@@NizzahonMagic Yeap. I made the comment before you got to that point. :) I personally have fun taking "crap" card and finding ways to make them at least slightly usable... I actually have an entire deck I built using stuffy doll with pestilence and some other global damage type of effects, and it is a lot of fun to play. Would it ever win a tournament? NOPE. But it is way fun to play casual, which is pretty much all the play I do anymore. I enjoy your vids man, having played since way back, they are always pretty fun.
A fine addition to my decklist....
5:34 If you buff it to a 6/6 (before fading resolves), it dies immediately. At most you can let it resolve and take a counter, and then buff it to 5/5 so that it dies next turn. Or you can buff it to a 4/4 for one turn, and then the next turn it's a 3/3 and then dies.

I was also expecting to see it in the list, I remember that card from my starter pack in the late 90s... but well, it looks like there's much worse than a 3 mana vanilla 2/2 around, which is quite an achievement.

The only cards that are useless are the ones where a player doesn’t know how to use it.
This is akin to saying "There are no stupid questions." Oh yes, there sure are, and there are plenty of useless cards in Magic. Have you seen the Glyph cycle from Legends?
