- Cobra have made huge strides in the UK garden machinery market over the past 10 years and this is their latest introduction, the Cobra Fortis 17B Cylinder mower. We compare this new machine against the Allett Kensington 17B. With interchangeable cassettes for scarifying, aerating, brushing, verticutting, de-thatching and 10 blade cylinder. Is it good? The cobra looks a smart bit of kit, good strong metal construction!
I've had the Cobra Fortis 17 for about a month now and love it - have the verticut attachment too
Awesome to hear the feedback, thanks Ellis 👍🏼
Great video James. It seems even Allett employees are commenting about it (Laura/Tara) Interesting!
Thanks Ken, yeah seems so. I hope you are well sir 👍🏼
Great review! I’ve just got the 17b after my Allett Classic went bang. It’s a different league to the Allett Classic, really solid well made piece of kit. The blade is really thick too
This is a whole new world for us in the states-rotary cylinder mowers, rollers...fascinating technology! It seems like these mowers are commonplace in the isles. Cheers mate from across the pond. Thanks
The cobra's definitely taking the lead against the allet by the looks of it, woupd be good to see how it holds up long term
Thanks Jordan. Yes that is always the big question for new products. Cobra have always been pretty good with the back up, so I would be confident 👍🏼
To me the Allet is and always has been a rebranded Atco and the Atco was kinda the cylinder mower a homeowner bought because they couldn’t afford a Ransomes. Now the Cobra has come along looking much closer in spec/weight to a Ransomes but at a fraction of the cost of the Allet I can’t see how Allet can compete, it was easy enough for them when they were pretty much the only ones still doing cylinder mowers but now they have some very strong competition
Sounds about spot on mate. They do now have competition. I’m sure they will up their game to compete 👍🏼
I have to say it ... The cobra Fortis is a great mower... And it's going to be a challenge for Allett to match it..
I agree Mick. I have your videos to watch this evening 👌🏽🤩
@@MachineryNation lol don't bother..... It will send you to sleep 😴
@@themowerman I doubt that! I had to hold back watching until our video was complete 😂
Match it mick? They copied ALLETT
Even copying the stripes competition
The best form of flattery!!
@@SCC842 can you link me to this? Allett have been doing it since around 2012 where they worked with the telegraph under a marketing agency .. you may be thinking of britains best lawn
Hi James Looks good with my limited experience of cylinder mowers Thanks again
Thanks Darran 👍🏼
As a commercial gardener the cobra range running kawasaki motors are awesome they not a brand to be frowned apon,
Yeah their Kawasaki engined handheld machines are pretty good value.
Great video lads thanks for that, very interesting machine and nice to see a bit of competition in the cylinder mower world,i just wish they could cut higher with these machines as its a bit harder to see the stripes when grass is cut so low and it shows up any little defects in the grass also, allett make great machines but they are so expensive,my god the new battery powered allett stirling is near 5 grand so its great that a company can come along and give them a bit of competition, time will tell how the cobra holds up but it all looks pretty impressive from what james has shown us
Thanks Eddie! Yeah 100% great value. Cylinder mower just don’t work well in long grass, hence why they don’t cut higher I guess.
Great info vid James.
Thanks Phil 👍🏼
Hi Laura (@TARAWELSH) Can't see any problem with a bit of healthy competition in any market. I cant see anyone here bad mouthing any Allett products. Its up to the consumer to decide at the end of the day.
Well said... Allett have been around for a long time and have definitely leads the way forward... Even into the battery range for both home users and commercial .. and with the lawn academy knowledge will be shared around...
Good honest review.. Allett didn't have the budget for me to review one apparently......
We don’t pay people to do product reviews . It’s very fake! Of course you’re going to say it’s good when you’re being paid
@@TARAWELSH I don't get paid.... I did mine for free... And the mower is going back...
Great comparison video, thankyou - does the cobra have fold down handles for storage. Thanks 🙏
Nice review thanks. Maybe Allett will revert their prices back to 2019 levels now.
Not a chance
Both nice machines.
Nice review. I do like my alletts, but those cobras sure look good. I know what i would be picking given the £800 price difference, Team grey all the way. 👍
Yeah they are a popular machine, I think they now have strong competition. 🤩🥳
be interesting to see how well the verticut works on them and if any goood on deep grass
I've had a allett Kennington for a few years now, it's always been lightweight for a cylindermower, plus it's an old design. They are a useful machine if you can pick on up second hand at a good price but there are better alternatives around these days.
I can see the cobra being perfect for a quality machine for cricket clubs and sports surfaces. A lot of village and small clubs have a limited budget but want something that will stand the rest of time. If cobra need a club to test these… I know one 🤪😉
Bang on Joshua! The amount of times these small clubs end up buying an old dog to do the job, now an affordable quality option is available 👍🏼
Had alook in the cobra website, the prices of the mowers and more importantly the accessories are sooooo much cheaper then allet equivalent.
Great review James, lines are that straight you will get a job at wimbledon next year 👍👍
Thanks Nev! Yeah they seem to be getting better, don’t tell anyone but I had the GPS turned on 😂😂
@@MachineryNation 🤣🤣🤣straight to the pub
The Cobra seems to be a well built machine, if you keep it maintained it could be a real alternative. Time would tell us how long it last. But I think the real key to reliability is maintanance 👍🏻
I gonna catch the all.
thanks. I was the first person to like this video. I think I should get a reward. 👍
Nice review James, you're making me want to try one of those, will I have to mow from the left side of the yard since its from the UK? 🙂
I will ship one over to you John 😂
🤣Just throw it to me like you did for Steve.
@@Big_Johns that could work… i’m off to the veg garden, I’m guessing if spinach worked for Popeye it can for for me 🔋🔋
LoL!!! Worth a try 🤣🤣
its from china.. not the UK
Any chance this will be available in the US?
Besides its got such a cool 😎name 👍
Yeah for sure Bill! It is pretty cool!
Nice review, but your lawn 😱😱😱 Nice to see more more competition on the market. What's the support like for break downs with Cobra?
Cobra have a nationwide dealer network, so wouldn't be a problem, but just about any specialist dealer will be able to help.
Not my lawn, haha! With all other Cobra machines, they have been pretty good with back up, better than some major guys of late 👍🏼
@@TARAWELSH Ok thanks Laura 👍🏼
I’m guessing you didn’t watch the full video then? I compared cartridge change time on both and I showed how to adjust the height of cut on both. I’m also guessing you didn’t read the video title.. as this video was about testing the Cobra Fortis, being that it’s a new machine to the market and we compared it against the most popular on the market, quite standard stuff really.
The Allett cartridge I used was your offering for Aeration and the Cobra cartridge I used was their offering for Aeration.. As this video was about the new Fortis machine, I picked the cartridge that was the most different from the others, if it was the other way around, I recon you would of done the same.
It’s a shame you have deleted a lot of your other comments on this video as I was going to reply to another one of them.
Anyway let’s leave it there, as it is what it is.
Allet Kensington is a Atco Balmoral SK . The Cobra nice looking machine .
Works well.
Yeah, when ATCO sold to GGP years ago, Allett purchased the cylinder mower, plans, tooling and engineers at the same time I believe. I hope you are well Pete 👍🏼
All good thanks James.
Austin won't be happy. Didn't some Allett guys go to hentons thus this coming out? Good comparison, huge weight difference.
I’m not sure mate, thanks for the feedback 👍🏼
Bought a 14 inch suffock punch wish I had of knew about this cylinder mower prior.
Sell the Punch! And get this!
I agree ,I'm very impressed with the Fortis
An upgrade from the Allet for sure. Keen to see if they export to other countries. Allets are a bit overpriced for my liking.
A friend of mine is exporting them to Germany
ALLETT are made in Britain and not China
@@TARAWELSH You sure every part in the Allett mowers is British? Nope they are not, so clearly state that before making ridiculous comments. Ego motors, handle bars and batteries are not made in the UK but Allett uses them. Greenworks batteries in the Liberty are not British. Where are the plastic cogs in the drive mechanism made? What about the steel in the blades? How about the rubber in the rollers? What about the paint? Please do explain we are waiting to hear.
@@roger4880 you’re welcome to come and see ALLETT mowers being made in Britain.
@@TARAWELSH Maybe I'll take you up on that. Who do I contact? Will you show how the Ego batteries are assembled on site? Can I film my visit and share with my Instagram Lawn followers?
it is nice to have more than 21 inchs mowing but they realy need to work on an easier way to change the cassetes
The Cobra Fortis range goes up to 25” 🤩and as you can see from the video, changing the cylinder was about the same time as the allett, if it was not for the awkward Allen bolts.
Did the weight difference make a difference? I have an alley but find it to be too light.
Yes for sure! The weight will defo aid the quality of the stripe as well as when using any cartridges to hold them into the ground especially when using on spongy think thatch areas.
Eventually Harbor Freight will make one $249.99.
Already have cheap ones from several companies, but they are toys compared to a proper machine.
£800 difference!! 😮 wow !
@@TARAWELSH unless I'm mistaken.. cobra Fortis under kaaz. Made in Japan... Not china.. big difference.. I'm not saying Allett is bad , far from it . Allett is a name you can trust and I have had the pleasure of working and using some... I had a problem with the new cobra mower and within 5 mins someone rang me back to confirm my issue and the support/service is in place in the UK.. you have to look at it both ways.. not everyone can afford an allett and the choice is for the customer.. have you tried a Cobra Fortis yourself yet..? I'm telling ya... It's a good mower..
@@TARAWELSH I stand corrected.. it's still a good mower.. having used one myself
@@TARAWELSHit may well be, but at over £2k for a compact cylinder mower is really pushing it no matter where and who its made by. I remember seeing i think atco royale a very large machine for around about that price
@@TARAWELSH Allett jacked up their prices over the past 3 years, yes we have high inflation but this does not account for the increases and now there is the Sterling cash cow mower, what a joke price. At that price I'd buy a Dennis or Toro everyday all day over an Allett and so would any experienced greenkeeper/pro/lawn nut. Allett had good mowers at good prices, now not. Accept it or keep up the moaning comments.
@@TARAWELSH True, but I have the costs for Allett and Hayter, the Hayter mowers went up but far less than the Allett's. Everyone's costs have risen, the question/point here is that Allett are in the camp of lets rise above inflation.
Is this available in the United States?
impressive stuff from COBRA, I have the atco balmoral (earlier version of the rebranded Allet) and to be fair underneath all the hype the allett is pretty poor on build quality at these prices the cobra is a no brainer
You will not be disappointed
It has a better build quality underneath for sure.
your mower is 15+ years old so an old design.
The alletts are largely the same design they have been since the 1990s. Cobra has moved the game on
@@jonathanpalgrave1972 the qc range are yes with slight adaptions over time.... the stirling is a new mower from allett from the ground up with innovative features eg quick cartridge change... a better comparison to this model
Would the cobra be good enough for a bowling green?
Try the Fortis20FTB / 25FTB with a 10 bladed cylinder? An Allett sports model?
How much is the cobra and can you get it with a wider cut
They do. 20 and 25inch
I just picked up the cobra 17 inch for £1040.00
@@HughesEllis was looking on line the 25inch is 1900£ thats not bad at all really
allett near truro
Allett are based near Stafford I believe 👍🏼
@@MachineryNation allett a small village near truro i know because i used to live in redruth i go by bike all over
Hixon
I really want a cylinder mower and I'm probably a bit of mower porn lover. I have a hilly garden though, so is a Cylinder mower going to work. I really don't want to spend £1k and then up with something I can't use. Any advice. Currently have a Stiga Twinclip 55 S-R H BBC Self-Propelled Rear Roller Petrol mower
i dont like spindle mowers i prefer flail mowers
Yeah they do two different jobs to be fair. Cylinder mowers for fine turf and flails for rough. Cylinder mowers work like scissors and flails rip the material off at speed.
Very poor comparison on the cut. The lawn tested on was very poor as anyone thinking of purchasing either of these machines would surely have a lawn if a much higher standard. The quality of cut didn’t get the a detailed comparison it deserved as this would be the main reason for parting with a four figure sum for a mower. Are you being sponsored by Cobra for this review?
Thanks for your feedback. The video was fundamentally about the Cobra as mentioned at the beginning of the video. We had the Allett as the best known for comparison.
To summarise the Cobra could do everything the Allett can with like for like results when mowing, but the cobra is £800 cheaper, is of a better build quality and offer a commercial warranty. Hope this helps you in your purchasing decision 👍🏼
Too bad these are not available in the US. Allett is junk!
Go Cobra. Allett need a wake up call. They have been ripping people off with their sub standard, cheaply made, overpriced mowers for too long
