I haven't watched enough great movies this year to put together a list but I can recommend 'You Hurt My Feelings' from Nicole Holofcener. Not enough movies like it these days, chill, funny, very well written and acted, short and wonderful.
Hoping you find a way to talk at length about The Bear, by the way. This season was unbelievably good and I really want to hear you dig into it!

1. Bad Press - great doc that I think is still on the festival circuit
2. Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection - another excellent festival doc with a title I hate
3. Missing - a solid, superior follow-up to Searching, imo
4. The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic - excellent, tense Finnish thriller
5. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves - because of course :)

Good to hear past lives is worth seeing. Doesn't come out locally until the end of August.
Regarding Spiderverse, I had a fuzzy sort of disagreement with your conclusion that it was half a movie after I heard the filmcast ep. But I couldn't nail it down as there's no dount the ending is messy. More recently another youtuber I follow made a solid argument for why the whole thing does hold together and stands alone due to the parallel journey's Miles and Gwen both go on in the story and it clicked for me.

I agree. I came into the movie knowing it was the first part of two. Imo most people’s genuine critique about the ending shows that the movie did everything else so well, and even then the ending was still satisfactory if you stop to think for like one minute. The ending and the movie shouldn’t really be knocked due to other people’s failure to acknowledge that it was a part one because it had been advertised as such for well over 2 years.
Obviously I sympathize with the workers and their working conditions. However, everyone behind the scenes really did come together to put together a genuine masterpiece and work of art.
I'd disagree slightly there. It is a masterpiece and I'd rank it as my favourite film of the year so far. But in terms of being the 2nd part of a trilogy that ending is very messy. Empire is the obvious comparison here and Across does not hold up to that. Did them continually fiddling with the FX lead to them rushing the finale? Who knows, but it would make sense.
*MILD SPOILERS*
Where I disagree with Dave is that in terms of what the movie is trying to say, it does work as a standalone. If you buy the argument in the vid I linked to then you need Miles' declaration that he's not scared of his own power, you need Gwen putting her own band together. Themewise it works. Storywise I can see why some people found it unsatisfying.
My opinion of the movie went up when I realized it was ending there. So much confidence to pull that off knowing you got the audience hooked and wanting for more.
I haven't left a movie theater that hyped since probably Fellowship of the Ring, all that built up tension just flowing right into the next one.

I really like "A Thousand and One" and "Monica"
My favourite take on Blackberry so far is from engineering UA-cam royalty (and former early days RIM employee) Matthias Wandel, who was there when a lot of the events in the film occurred.
