I am so envious of your relationship with your dad and how he's throwing a razor sharp knife around while you're delivering the commentary you guys rule
Von Tempsky was NZs Custer, from a long lineage of Prussian professional soldiers. A man of his time. Met his nemesis at Te Ngutu o te Manu, a raid of fatal consequence.
glad to see you guys are enjoying these knives and mentioned they are from new Zealand.. Svord is a good company and make a great knives..i have a small peasant knife made by them..
Wow Mr. Hickok 45. Your such a GREAT Father, to get this for your son. I Honestly DON'T Remember the last time, my Ole man ever, gave me a X-Mas gift. God Bless you and your Son, Sir.
I got a big 17" bowie from Pakistan for 50$ and although there are very insignificant problems with the finish the fit is perfect and I use it regularly even when smithing to chop wood for the forge But I definitely would prefer one of these
After watching your video, i tried to buy one, and no one had any, ha ! You increased the demand so much that they could not keep up with production. Thus i put in multiple orders with different vendors- long story short, i now own 5 of them. I will give 2 to my son's and keep 2 for myself ( one to use, the other for display ), and number 5 not sure yet. If your interested there is a guy in Germany ( Chris ) who on UA-cam is 'BlackForest Ghost'. He lives in a small village in the BF. He produces his video's in English & German... he really put mainly knives through quit a workout, testing their worth. He did a video on the Von Tempsy Bowie in Oct 2010.... very interesting guy ! I told him about you and John, as i have also passed the word about your channel to my friends. Really enjoy your presentations.... Thank You... Regards Ray ( Buffalo NY )
I was taking a drink of tea when Hickok did that stab move to his right off screen. I don't know why, but that made me spit up a little onto myself. I was picturing a soda bottle just being there and him not being able to help himself. "Stabby!"
Doesn't sound like an infomercial at all. If you love something, you talk about it on video. I grew up competing in Kendo all of my childhood life in Asia and also studied the Sayok System in the PI and studied under Grand Master Dr. Remy Presas and competed for many years in Arnis Kali. I now work as a Defense Dept. Contractor and teach various Knife Fighting techniques so I love it when people talk about their favorite knives and love the history of various edge weapons. Thanks for sharing Hickok. As usual, I support your videos and you keep it interesting and educational for us.
Always loved your channel! most gun channels that talk a lot are not very entertaining to watch but you've always got something interesting to say, and Your jokes always give me a chuckle too.
Matt H Short sword is the length of your forearm and up: long sword two forearms' length: great sword three. Under forearm length is a knife, with most forearms being 18 inches.
A good knife is well worth the dollars spent. And you can find a lot of great knives in Tennessee. I know, that's where I initially got my love for knives. Have a great day.
Thanks for sharing, guys! I happen to know a bit about steel (particular the kinds...plural...used on knives). Interestingly, there are steels (1095 as an example) that are a little "softer" and are less likely to break...and then there are steels that are exceptionally hard and can actually be "brittle" (more prone to breaking). With Ontario, they usually use 1095 or 5160 spring steel in their larger knives. Typically, that steel will "bend" before it breaks, however, if it is hardened improperly, it'll break like you've described. Anyway, thanks for some awesome entertainment (overall; not only this video!)
john pately the bowie is a well renowned utility knife but its basic shape and sice come from the viking seax really, similarities are obvious ^^ still love the bowies tho ^^
Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky, adventurer, soldier and artist, learned the benefits of bowie knife fighting in California while working in the gold fields. He possessed a fine knife of American manufacture for his own use, but had about 30 bowie knives made to his personal design by a cutler of Shortland St, Auckland. These were issued to the men of No. 2 Company, New Zealand Forest Rangers, under Major von Tempsky's command. The Forest Rangers were an elite corps of bush-roving scouts employed by the colonial government between August 1863 and October 1867 during the New Zealand Wars. "They were the Forest Rangers, whose very name carries a flavour of adventure in the Dangerous Lands, suggests tales of scouting and skirmish and ambuscade, and bush marching and camping in wary silence." (James Cowan, historian)The knives were made from waggon spring steel - being one of the few sources of suitable steel available to blacksmiths in Auckland in 1863.Von Tempsky, an experienced fighter, taught his men to use the bowie knife in one-on-one armed combat. The knife was used to fend off an opponent's attacking blows while a revolver was used in the other hand. The big knives were also used to clear tracks through bush, dig defensive positions, cut fire wood and for general use about camp.A 1900 inerview with John Toovey, an ex Forest Ranger corporal, appeared in a 1935 issue of The New Zealand Railways Magazine: He had a farm near Te Awamutu. Customarily, out on the farm and in the bush, he wore a sheath-knife on his belt. The knife was a veteran like himself. It had been nine or ten inches long of blade, but the point had been broken off, and he re-ground and pointed it; even then it was like a young bayonet. He told its story, "That's one of old Von's bowie knives," he said. "He had a lot made for us at a blacksmith's in Auckland when the Forest Rangers were divided into two companies and he had command of me."You know, old Von was a terror with the bowie knife. He had learned to use it in Mexico and Central America. Certainly it came in handy in the bush, and as we had no bayonets it was comforting to know you had a good sticker on your hip for a scrimmage."I've had that knife more than thirty years. See how it's worn down. I've used it for all sorts of jobs, hacking bush tracks, pig-sticking, skinning sheep, cutting up my tobacco and my loaf of bread. It'll last my day, my boy!"
I had not gone far when a man of our company was shot. The Major went to his assistance, and was shot, the bullet entering the centre of his forehead. He fell dead on top of the man to whose assistance he was going. That was how Tempsky died.[7] Although the corpses of some other soldiers were eaten, Tempsky was held in high esteem by the Maori, and Kimble Bent said that Titokowaru ordered that Tempsky's body be placed onto a funeral pyre in the centre of the marae.[8] In 1965, Mr Tonga Awikau, aged 101, described how as a child he had seen this cremation of 20 British dead, including Major von Tempksy [1].
Nice video. Good use for a big knife. I was doing the same thing this past weekend with a Woodman's Pal. Rescuing living pecan trees from vines. I am in Oklahoma so you can bet they were poison ivy vines most of the time. I like these "team" videos. Thumbs up
I'm an Aussie and I pronounce it "svord", bugger how the New Zealanders say it. I love my Von Tempsky, though I had to mod it a little, first up you should add a lanyard to the handle, as you don't want this big brute to fly out of your hand during heavy chopping. Second, add some camo form to the handle to dampen the handle vibration. I am also not really happy with the sheath, I am going to replace it eventually but will suffer the factory one for the moment. I also have found Ballistol the best rust preventive for the blades, smells like cat piss when applied but is really good at stopping the L-6 or 15n20 from rusting.
Nice workhorse knife! I carry an Old Hickory 14 inch blade model around the property and use the heck out of it. Can't go wrong with a 20 dollar, high carbon steel blade. Keep the vids coming!
I thought maybe you was going to put on knife juggling show there for a minute. Thanks again, really enjoyed the video, looking forward until the next time.
A little late to the thread’ sorry about that’ just wanted to chime in for anyone who comes along and give testimony to my VonTempsky Bowie’ had it close to 8 yrs now and can attest to the sheer durability and toughness of it’ I’ve gutted and quartered deer with it’ ran it through countless piles of fire wood by the many fires that have came and went and I also have used it more times than I can count at work and in the field clearing path and branches around and on telephone and electric poles’ I also use a Condor pack Golock and 1917 Coldsteel Frointer Bowie from time to time’ all are around the same weight and size’ but the simplicity and rough look of the VonTempsky really set it apart’ easy to touch up the blade as well on a commercial diamond powder rod after each use’ still goes right back to the factory edge after a couple passes’ hard to beat at any price’ also the sheath wore in really well and the blade itself takes on more quality as it Patinas with use.
I ordered a ursa musso Bowie knife off of Ebay, it is huge, it's a quarter inch thick 19 inch long full tang, brace guard, brace blade catcher, wood handle clip point blade, it looks just like the knife used in 2008 film The Alamo jim Bowies knife, it is a sweet knife these are really nice knives to, I agree with both of you, a really good sizable knife just to use it is hard to find a Bowie that can be used every day servival cause I love these knives and it is kinda sad cause, one way I love to use a good Bowie knife but I also dont like messing up the looks of the knife either God bless James Bowie and Sam black
great video guys i just did a review on this knife my self they are pretty cool im down here in new zealand where they are made oh and you do pronounce the v thanks for a great video i love the knife stuff
I'm sure you know this hickock45 but when the knife was designed the clip was sharpened as well and used upside down so that you could stab in and rip back upwards and spill the enemies innards all over the ground. Bowie figured it would be hard to fight if you were collecting your parts.
Big Fan of the Bowie Knife. Enjoy and have fun with them. You are right in getting a nice thick knife - you have to look for them. This knife is named after one of my great great relatives, Gustav Von Tempsky. He used that Bowie knife fighting the tribes in New Zealand and Oceania.
i moded handle on my svord von tempsky bowie ,cutting grooves on it and make it more friendly to use. it weights above 900 grams, and hss a stright handle need you fore arm strong enough to control . all in all ,i like the bowie

We need more videos with John in front of the camera! I love the father and son banter!!
The videos with Hickock and his son are awesome, I watch both your channels, but the videos you guys make together are very cool and fun to watch.
Believe it or not, Gustavus von Tempsky was my ancestor. I just ordered one of these, I'm hoping to feel closer to the great man...

Like crocodile Dundee said " that's not a knife. Now this is a knife." Great review.
I'd love to have one. Bowie knives are the best knives out there. They can do anything. Great throwers, too!
Sue: He's got a knife.
Dundee: That's not a knife. THIS is a knife!
Wow Mr. Hickok 45. Your such a GREAT Father, to get this for your son. I Honestly DON'T Remember the last time, my Ole man ever, gave me a X-Mas gift. God Bless you and your Son, Sir.
I got a big 17" bowie from Pakistan for 50$ and although there are very insignificant problems with the finish the fit is perfect and I use it regularly even when smithing to chop wood for the forge
But I definitely would prefer one of these

Awesome fun guys ! Great knife
Ride the lightning - great music. I've still got the cassette tape!
That's not a knife. Now, this is a KNIFE!🔪 Nice knives! 👍
I was taking a drink of tea when Hickok did that stab move to his right off screen. I don't know why, but that made me spit up a little onto myself. I was picturing a soda bottle just being there and him not being able to help himself. "Stabby!"
my son and I love the father and son combo!family is the most important thing in life!

Hey guys I like this video with both of you taking part. Hope you do some more. Thanks and Cheers!
Jon
Great camaraderie between you two. Really enjoyed it.
Always loved your channel! most gun channels that talk a lot are not very entertaining to watch but you've always got something interesting to say, and Your jokes always give me a chuckle too.
When does a knife stop being a knife, and start being a short sword?!😅👍
I found it online. Gettin one!
Matt H Short sword is the length of your forearm and up: long sword two forearms' length: great sword three. Under forearm length is a knife, with most forearms being 18 inches.
a sword is a weapon first, a knife is a tool first then a weapon mostly regardless of length (usually)
a sword would make a bad tool
polonose 00 a tool for killing someone...
I bought my SVORD skinning knife in 1993 at age 14, $80 NZ dollars damn good knives last you a lifetime.
That's a knife- Crocodile Dundee
john has the best t-shirts
this guy is gonna totally survive a zombie apocalypse xD
Excited Cat lol i was thinking that 😂 hes gonna one shot all zombies till round 15
Love the comradery between you two, missing my old man something fierce. Keep the quality coming.

Glen Pope aye
Astiagogo it's a joke:)
Its the only proper way to finish a foe :P
Old meme.
Skallagrim
A good knife is well worth the dollars spent. And you can find a lot of great knives in Tennessee. I know, that's where I initially got my love for knives. Have a great day.
Back in the day and even today a knife is never unloaded.
Greetings from Poland Hickok. :)
And greetings from Polish in Canada.
mr MM =D
Nice seeing more of John on the videos. 'Brats on the new generation.
.

they look great!
something about a dude holding a bowie knife wearing a metallica shirt makes me not want to mess with him.
Bubbs then you also find out hes like 6ft8 also
Can't beat a good bowie knife.
john pately the bowie is a well renowned utility knife but its basic shape and sice come from the viking seax really, similarities are obvious ^^ still love the bowies tho ^^
RIDE THE LIGHTNING is one of the best albums ever. Now subbing you guys on some of other accounts lol. Great people.
This is by far my favorite bowie knife 👌⚡⚡⚡
That knife looks huge even in Hickok's hands!
Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky, adventurer, soldier and artist, learned the benefits of bowie knife fighting in California while working in the gold fields. Von Tempskys book about his time In the Americas is documented in his book ' Mitla ' .....it's free on Google books.
What no quick game of Mumblety-peg? Fun stuff thank you.
A Hatchet is much cheaper alternative for utility use . I looked these up $200 is a little pricey to hack on trees with.

@hickok45 & son This was GREAT! Really put a smile on my face, you guys should do a couple gun videos like this! Would be killer!
Nice to see your son ! Seen so many of your videos and never seen the camera operator. Great job you too ! Keep it up
This is a pocket knife for a Hickok.
Nice video. Good use for a big knife. I was doing the same thing this past weekend with a Woodman's Pal. Rescuing living pecan trees from vines. I am in Oklahoma so you can bet they were poison ivy vines most of the time. I like these "team" videos. Thumbs up
It's 5 below zero this morning & I see John in a t-shirt. You practically have to be from Kentucky to decide to live in Minnesota
quite early for me, I've been thinking about getting a bowie knife lately, nice video, interesting. Thank You Hickok
I'm an Aussie and I pronounce it "svord", bugger how the New Zealanders say it.

I like these knife reviews every once in a while :)
Nice workhorse knife! I carry an Old Hickory 14 inch blade model around the property and use the heck out of it. Can't go wrong with a 20 dollar, high carbon steel blade. Keep the vids coming!
If you like the heavy Bowie knives, then check out the Cold Steel 1917 Bowie.
johns shirt earns him much respect
I see James wearing a Molon Labe shirt in a lot of videos. And now, he's moved out of California. I wonder if he's a Hickok fan.
i really like your lectures and stories behind weapons its cool
Been looking for a beater bowie knife to compliment my favorite folders (which are cold steel Espada XL knives) and I think this one is a winner...
I absolutely truly enjoy all of your videos Guys ! Happy New Year !
My Friends !
God bless you and your family !
I thought maybe you was going to put on knife juggling show there for a minute.
Thanks again, really enjoyed the video, looking forward until the next time.
LoL @ 3:14 , , "They bought You a Car too eH?" . .

Love Hickok45 and big Bowies!
Here I am, 5:30 in the morning, watching two guys hit a dead tree with gigantic knives.
Time well spent!
Yeah.
I love the becker/kabar BK9.
But have looked at the svord von tempski, will get one some time.
I ordered a ursa musso Bowie knife off of Ebay, it is huge, it's a quarter inch thick 19 inch long full tang, brace guard, brace blade catcher,

great video guys i just did a review on this knife my self they are pretty cool im down here in new zealand where they are made oh and you do pronounce the v thanks for a great video i love the knife stuff
you can tell your son was a teenager in the early 2000s. dresses just like my older brother
I'm sure you know this hickock45 but when the knife was designed the clip was sharpened as well and used upside down so that you could stab in and rip back upwards and spill the enemies innards all over the ground. Bowie figured it would be hard to fight if you were collecting your parts.
John is wearing a Metallica Ride The Lightning shirt. \m/
if you like big knives try a Nepali kukhri, I like the 15 1/2 " ones. I like the videos cool to see variety of your reviews. keep it up!
gotta love a practical workhorse beater knife as opposed to a collectors that stays in the drawer.
Micheal Jordan shorts tie in to David Bowie knife discussion .. awesome!
love you gun videos. and digging knife ones as well. thanks guys
Daniel Winkler makes great Bowie knifes and great knifes period.
Great video on the Arkansas Toothpick.
Thank you
Always Love your clips 👍🏻
Going Biblical on us," If you don't have a sword sell your coat and go buy one" LOL!!
Big Fan of the Bowie Knife. Enjoy and have fun with them.
You are right in getting a nice thick knife - you have to look for them. Bowie had more than one design of knife and I think that is were some of the confusion comes in to play.
I am a fan of the longer "more butcher" knife version. Mine is a Cold Steel Natchez Bowie : Cuz I can't wait or afford Randall.
Von Tempskys bush rangers used to use the Bowie knife to block a blow from a tomahawk or taiha
good to see you General.Shepherd
Mick Dundee approves of this endorsement. "you call that a knife?"
Owned a bunch of knives from the major makers. I love my Svord Bowie. Only thing I don't like is the convex edge. I get it but yeah its a pain.
You just cost me $170. Looked these up and found out they make a 7 inch version. Guess I’m eating pb&js this week.
That vine, covered in small roots, in the beginning, looks a LOT like poison ivy.
Love the videos, great work you two!
Metallica, I've got a new appreciation for this channel. Metal Forever
Coldsteel, a lot of great quality strong knives that can be used.
Classic shirt there AndSon. ;) I was still in high school when that album came out.
Great review guy's I knew you'd love it as I love mine !
If you put a lanyard on those big knives you can put your arm in up to the elbow and hold the point end for fine work.
Von Tempsky was respected by his enemies, even the Maori Chief whose warriors killed him.
Although the corpses of some other soldiers were eaten, Tempsky was held in high esteem by the Maori, and Kimble Bent said that Titokowaru ordered that Tempsky's body be placed onto a funeral pyre in the centre of the marae.[8] In 1965, Mr Tonga Awikau, aged 101, described how as a child he had seen this cremation of 20 British dead, including Major von Tempksy [1].
The local Maori returned his sword sheath to his widow and it is held these days by the Thomsons in Hawkes Bay.[citation needed]
Those are actually 2 handed greatswords. It's just that they are so tall that they make the swords look small.
