Zeani & Domingo - the best ending of Manon Lescaut

- Romanian soprano Virginia Zeani and Placido Domingo sing one of the most moving endings I have ever heard of Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" - recorded live at Teatro Liceu, Barcelona in 1971.
Zeani explained that after the curtain fall, Domingo and her fell in tears, crying like babies just because it was such a dramatic moment for both of them, one of the rare moments where an artist is the victim of his/her art... BRAVI!!!
Another example is when Placido, after singing "Rachel quand du Seigneur," needs a few minutes to recover from the overwhwlming emotion of self hatred for having set in motion the forces that led to Rachel's death sentence.
Wow! Wow! Wow! The one and only Virginia Zeani is superb! So tragic! So credible! Unforgettable!!! Placido Domingo is wonderful, one of the best Des Grieux!
The last breaths of a dying art. Magnificently sung and deeply moving. Bravi entrambi!
you are so right. The singing we hear today from most opera singers is abominably bad due to the fact that there are hardly any knowledgeable voice teachers left.
I feel this aria is often not sung with enough passion or tragedy...yet Virginia Zeani is perfect. A real star performance.
THAT is real verismo. Bravi!
You are absolutely right! Domingo sound like a god, Zeani is naturally goddess. I hope so much that somebody of us, young singers, will resurrect this incredible kind of art.
Molto molto brava.
She told me how she and Domingo fell apart after the opera ended, they had become so immersed in their roles. Crying hysterically. TRUE ART..What a teacher too. Grazie Virginia.
Grande maestria vocale
IMMENSA VIRGINIA ZEANI! !!! STUPENDA! !
Verissimo!
The best interpretation ever•♫♪
OGGI 21 OTTOBRE 2015 LA GRANDE, IMMENSA VIRGINIA ZEANI COMPIE 90 ANNI. AUGURI, AUGURI, AUGURIIIII E GRAZIE PER LE EMOZIONI CHE CI HA REGALATO. QUESTO BRANO MI FA VENIRE I BRIVIDI SEMPRE, LO SENTO IN MEDIA UNA VOLTA AL MESE. QUESTO E' ARTE ALLO STATO PURO. ANCORA GRAZIE
There are moments when she lightens the voice to make us remember Manon is, after all, a young woman and not an old diva.
Spectacular.... so very moving.... fortunately, humans are still evolving... more recent examples of excellent interpretations are around.... Domingo and Scotto... Domingot and Te Kanawa... his vocal llanto is exquisite in its suffering.... I don't think I can take anymore...
ooh ...breathtaking ,Puccini,Zeani and Domingo = MAGIC
Zeani magnifica
She is not forgotten .Aren't we listening her right now ?She is very much honored in her country of origin ,ROMANIA.Watch her interviews. A lot of listeners are rediscovering her.She was born to sing's she said and she does it with all her soul and heart. We must thank the universe for beings like her.
All the suffering and utter despair of Manon's character pours out of her very voice, which resonates as if filled with bitter tears. And of course, Domingo sings with such deep emotion. Zeani and Domngo both make for an utterly convincing portrayal of their characters, both vocally and dramatically!
LOVE it!!!
At long, long last a major article will be published in OPERA magazine in November 2009 entitled THE LEGENDARY VIRGINIA ZEANI.
Who cares about Opera magazine? They exist only because of Virginia Zeani. She doesn't need their "seal" of approval, and their shitty
major" article, and recognition. She simple IS . perfection, that IS.
Maravillosa aria final de Manon lescaud
@cantorandopera
Yes, real verismo. Thank you mekarts2 for posting, and thank you Rowna@cantorandopera for sharing.
Proud to be Romanian.

I like happy endings. I seldom listen to the last act of Manon Lescaut. I much prefer to end with Des Grieux running up the gangplank into Manon's arms and off to a new life in America. However, Zeani's performance is so powerful that I would make an exception in this case. She also brings the best out of Domingo.
@AfroPoli, Sono completamente d'accordo con te!....Viva Puccini sempre!
The best Manon I've ever heard. 6:15
5:30 !!!

Que año fue la grabación?
how rightyou are !
Domingo is fine, but, IMO, not too-distinguished; Bjorling was the master, here. ... Zeani, though, is extraordinary ... up-and-down the difficult scales of the soprano part, as it builds to a conclusion. If anyone can name a better soprano, in dramatic sense AND the vocal abilities to ACHIEVE the ends of a very-fine means, then would like to know about it.
This is indeed a powerful and exciting version by Zeani of this wonderful aria, but I feel the version here on youtube by Anna Moffo surpasses all others.' Her voice, general musicianship, and acting ability are legendary.
@@diefledermichael801 Anna Moffo is not even in the room. Sorry, I like her, she's beautiful, decorative, and operetta singer. Virginia Zeani is the DIVA. Do your homework, listening, studies, and you'll agree.

I totally agree, Virginia is the "Assoluta" ...
@@julia-pd3prmoffo is a bit better than you say, but certainly not in the class of zeani

Did you hear this great singer give a memorable performance live without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add to the wonderful UA-cam archive before the memory is lost for ever. Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. How I wish I could have been there in 1734 to hear Farinelli stun an audience with a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
oh my god oh my god oh my god, must get issue, i die

WOWZER!
now, seriously, how can i read that article? living in venezuela i'm not familiar with that publication, is it an online subscription magazine? is it free? (crossing fingers)
That's very good but for me no other version is superior to the final with Petrella and Del Monaco (Mexico 1951). That's my desert's island disc.
Totally agree!!!! Patrella has to be my most favorite Manon 😊
I wonder how they fare in the unison high C right before Sola, perduta, abbandonata in this performance. Zeani’s voice is STRONG here but she is definitely pushing her chest voice too high. Didn’t seem to affect the high Bb’s at all but may have caused a problem on C.
P.S. There are MANY great Manon Lescaut Act 4 recordings. Albanese/Bjoerling, Tebaldi/Tucker, Caballe/Domingo, Kirsten/Alexander (Met 1975, she was 65 years old), Freni/Pav. Just like the last act of Roméo te Juliette, Manon Lescaut Act 4 is a magnificently written (long) duet.
No question, Mdme. Zeani was a great soprano when the market was full of great divas: Callas, Tebaldi, Carteri, Kirsten, de los Angeles to mention few, but most likely she was not at her prime vocally in this performance, so she was intelligent enough and used her abilities as an actress and great phrasing, and Mr. Domingo had to react the same way, but i agree, it was a little too much from both
I was initially enthralled by Zeani's intensity, and then about halfway through this I woke up and thought, "OK, please, just die and get it over with." I know it's Puccini, and so the usual bounds of taste are nowhere in sight - how many repetitions of a mournful phrase are necessary, how much sobbing and screaming can we tolerate in the name of art? - but I need a walk in the cold air.
you need to stop listening to classical music, or art, it's definitely not for you.
