I was there in '72, and of all the great preformances, this was the highlight for me. I still get gooseflesh. Both of them are sublime.

opera at it's very best! the chemistry between Caballe and Domingo never fails to thrill. this is so beautiful and truly demonstrates why Caballe was indeed one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century. the voice is secure and powerful, amazing when she had not long before had a caesarian to safely deliver her daughter. she declined to have a solo spot instead choosing to sing this with domingo. Caballe is undoubtedly a legend and this shows why!

Domingo at this moment, had a conbination of voice color, pathos, high musicality that none other tenor in the history had. This is the ideal Puccini sound and line, plus the genius of Caballe is the highest level possible.

I think Caruso would have something to say about that, Domingo here is young also is voice his enhanced by the microphone, I heard him in these years many time at Covent Garden he did NOT have a heavy voice, this sounds enhanced and unbalanced, it has been doctored.
I am 101 years old and I have seen many opera's and many tenors in that time, my first was Rudolf Laubenthal at Covent Garden in 1927 in rehearsals for Gotterdammerung, I was with my Mother my father was a leading tenor in the chorus from 1909 till 1940, he was also alive to see Domingo and Pavarotti in London, his opinion on Caruso was simple, he had perfect Control over a very large instrument and he had all the dynamics and shadings of a lyric Tenor except when he sang full voice he could raise the rafters, often forgot is that Caruso was an accomplished singer of Mozart and even early baroque works, he could sing Florid music with ease, also his coloratura would often bring World famous soprano's to tears, I admit myself that the Tenors of say the 1930's were also superior, I saw a lot Pertile, Melchior, Fusati, Martinelli, Lauri Volpi , Bjorling, Lorenz, Borgioli, Schipa, Thill, D,'Arkor, Tokatyan, Pistor, not forgetting Gigli. for me the most impressive was Giovanni Martinelli, I saw him in London in Aida and I met him after the performance, he was by far the Greatest Radames in my opinion, of that time, also Otello twice with Tibbet Formichi and Norena also in Tosca and Turandot with Eva Turner and Carmen , his Otello to me was and still his the greatest interppretation of that role on Stage, my father had seen Tamagno sing the role in Milan and at Covent Garden he was in with Slezak and Zenatello and Franz the three probable finest in the role at that time, he saw Martinelli first in 1912 , he said his voice was virile martial and extremely lush, he also had easy very high notes, in 1937 Martinelli was probably 57 not 52, but he was masterful and he was a very excellent actor and a first rate musician, my father opined he was the greatest at that time and later when he saw Del Monaco and Beirer singing the role that Martinelli was superior, he also wrote diaries essays and notes on every time he was on an operatic stage and watching or appearing in concerts etc, I have had my Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren collating his writings and essays and also his many signed photos of singers he met and knew, they have not sorted half and it has been two years, I will not see the end that is for sure .My parents were friendly with Alfred Piccaver and Walter Widdop, from Caruso was a photo and small drawing of his performance in the Huguenots with Tettrazini and Plancon also there was a fine photo and note from Fernand Ansseau the Belgian dramatic tenor who was greatly admired in London.
On Domingo he saw him twice in Fedora and Tosca, he liked his voice but he said his notes are very strained above B Natural he will not sing a High C perfectly, my father had been trained in Italy and he also had been a leading Tenor in the provinces till 1906 when he a severe bout of Pneumonia and was ill for some time, By then he had two children my Elder Brother and Sister, he auditioned for the chorus and was accepted by Sir Percy Pitt the in house conductor at the garden, back to Domingo he was certain that his Fach was more a high Baritone than tenor, he had not quite bridged the gap between those ranges, earlier Melchior also was a Baritone but he had a much larger voice than Domingo, but he had little difficulty singing a high C when needed.

On Caballe a Lovely lady whom I had the privilege to meet, but also the young Caballe had extremely Beautiful phrasing and her diction was impeccable , she was a wonderful Singer and woman, I cannot remember anybody coming close to her in the last 30 years or so, I saw her in Tosca beautiful eyes and her stage craft was very easy for her, even though she was a Large Lady, still a beautiful woman and a great ambassador for Spain her voice always pleases me, I heard Ponselle she also was the same, even Frida Leider who was a large lady was very easy on the ear, people talk about this soprano or that Soprano they were all great voices , but in opera you need a thing call Stage presence, its when you cannot take your eyes off a performer, Caballe had that, many did not, so it was true of Tenors it was written many times in London that Martinelli on Stage was noble I admit that he was very active on the stage not only with voice but with movements and gestures that you understood, Caballe was like that, she was like a glowing diamond on the stage I remember her with a lot of Tears in my eyes.

Robert Evans , those were beautiful words from you, and yes, Caballé had that stage presence that you said. I’m 67 years old and found how much I love opera this late in life. She was a great lady and unbelievable singer!
I love listening to opera, but it’s so often sad, but I keep coming back to it. I wish I had an Interest earlier in life, because I would surely have gone anywhere to see her on stage!

@@debbiejohnson2789 She was a real Class lady on the stage, for a large woman, if I may talk in personal terms, she had what was called Sexual appeal her smile and eyes were radiant, I saw her with Carreras a few times also with her Husband Bernabe Marti who I found was a very good Tenor, but she had a great rapport with Carreras especially in his younger years his voice was definitely the quality of the great Spanish Tenors Fleta and Cortis not the Vibrato of Lazaro, who I heard twice, he had an extremely Large High C and D but for me his personality lacked polish or nobility, Carreras ruined his voice which was a beautiful Lyric Quality with his move in to heavier more Dramatic roles Araiza did the same, which certainly was not their Fach. I also saw her in Paris with Aragall in La Traviata she was pure Magic. She had that way with singing the words, that the Legato was incredibly Lush much like Muzio, her acting was not of the Class of Callas, but she was better than Tebaldi, but all three of these Ladies would have been successful in any era.

For me PD sings the 19th century repetoire with the passion it deserves which includes the drama as well as the musical and vocal discipline. He gives me so much.

TOO many roles is what happened. boheme, romeo, otello and then a rigoletto in ONE month. balls my friend! singing so many roles in so many fachs eventually lead to his nasally top and upper middle registers and cautious singing throughout the mid to late 80's and 90's. BUT, prime placido is unmatched in voice and interpretations. there is a reason why SO many OLD school tenors tried to sabatoge this voice with cancellations (corelli)! this is PRIME placi! UNMATCHED in beauty and power!

  • @GermanOperaSinger
    @GermanOperaSinger 16 років тому +1

Corelli was indeed the king of cancellations, but not because he wanted to destroy Placido's voice...my grandparents knew him a little and talked with him once or twice; he canceled because he was overly paranoid about the condition of his voice (i.e. 'my throat is a little sore, get someone else to sing for me tonight, etc.'). This is why one had a very good chance of getting a high calibre performance whenever Franco DID decide to sing.

i didnt make that up. domingo personally knows this as does EVERYONE in the business at that time. corelli didnt like placido and vice versa. corelli is the king of high C's!! C=cancellations!! but, corelli is ONE of the finest tenors ever. period.

@operabitch77 One saturdayafternoon in the mid1960s there wasA Met production of DonCarlo& the announcer had said that Mr.Corelli isindisposed but he will attempt to proceed irregardless, to please forgive him if he is not at his best.He did sing & was absolutely phenominal.I also think that there was a mystiche surrounding himbecause of the cancellations. Will he appear orwont he? will he sound good or wont he?I always thought he sounded fantasticBut i think his vocal decline started around1970

I never heard Domingo's voice sound so opulent . Maybe there is a correlation between physical weight and vocal weight after all!?! Again when Domingo was heaver in the late 70's the voice was much fuller.

Conozco a ambos.

Domingo towers over Caballe in more ways than one, lol. At least she doesn't smother him (so to speak). I know many absolutely adore her voice and I easily agree, it is magnificent. Listening to Domingo when he was very young just reminds me that he was a sincere artist from moment one. His voice here is like a head strong Clydesdale thundering through the music. So he had the generosity of instrument early so he could take his time sculpting and polishing it. Thank God for us that this man existed at all. The greatest tenor of all time, a total artist of deep integrity and colossal command of the opera art form.

I don’t know about integrity regarding this guy. Lately he was asked to leave the Met when allegations by anonymous women came to the front of sexual harassment by Domingo. One woman gave her name and spoke of incidences where she was cornered by him in the wings on repeated occasions. Other women made claims, but were too afraid of losing their jobs, so stayed silent. It is alleged that he’d been up to these antics since the mid eighties. He left without incidence.

@@emitch9213 Caballe never endeavored to master the entire art of opera, she coasted on her voice alone. She never tried to be a good actress, she stayed passable. She never tried to physically represent the characters she played, she expected the audience like it or lump it. While Domingo has had weight issues over the years, he believes in looking the part and in dramatically representing the part.

@@debbiejohnson2789 It's been over a year and the entire attack by the MeToo mafia has gone silent against him. Guaranteed, there are no "18 anonymous" accusers, at best there might be 18 gold diggers with buyer's remorse, hoping to get some sweet MeToo extortion cash. Because if what they alleged were serious enough to punish him for, staying anonymous would be impossible. What job would you stay silent for vs seeking justice in earnest? That's right, no job is worth that, if it were true. But it isn't, so they'll keep their jobs because they were never serious, and so, like I say, they don't exist. The two whose names we do know have the weakest cases. Wulf actually said he never touched her and never negatively impacted her career. Wilson, who's never spoken publicly, claims a stage crew member saw him assault her, and that crew member denies it. You are merely repeating the rumors spread by a news outlet with a very full retractions page and is known for hiring activists for causes they wish to virtue signal for and who tend to write highly clickbaitable headlines, due diligence and high journalistic standards be damned. Don't be a gullible MeToo vigilante, it will not end well for you, trust me. Apply Critical Thinking aka Socratic Method to your world, the mind you save will be yours.
