Isnt expression just volume ? I have a kontakt library with oriental strings that supposedly has heart or violins but image line tells me this wont work even if i get a breath controller a expression pedal or assign it to the mod wheel. They kept saying use patcher. Its like 275 step process for 1 damn thing
Thank you, I've had a lot of problems before with mod wheel expression and my music pieces sound irrealistic or the dynamics were wrong, but now I think I will do that better!
East West Hollywood strings documentation says the following about CC11 (Expression) According to the manual it is not just volume as far as i understand: "Expression is represented by another MIDI control code: CC11. The usual way to use CC11 is for continuous control of the loudness. That is, while Velocity cannot change mid-note, and it is recommended that CC7 be set only once at the beginning of the piece-or at least only at the start of major sections-CC11 can provide the kind of dynamic shaping of notes that give music its expressive life (hence the name “Expression” for this Control Code). Use it to create swells in the middle of a note or of a phrase. With CC11, you create the crescendos and fluid dynamics of expressive music. In Hollywood Strings, CC11 is often used to control cross-fades-especially when the Mod Wheel is already being used to control some other aspect of the notes, such as the depth of the vibrato. In these cross-fades, CC11 still provides the same continuous control of loudness that was described above, and it also controls timbre. In such a crossfade, Velocity is usually turned off; that is, the selection of which dynamic layer should provide the samples is taken away from Velocity. In a CC11 cross-fade, all the dynamic layers (for example, pp, mp, mf, and ff) play at once and CC11 controls how much of each to mix into the output. In this approach both the loudness and the timbre change continuously and together, giving a much more realistic sound. You will generally find CC11 cross-fades on those Hollywood Strings instruments that can benefit from mid-note changes in dynamics because they are often held for long times." And for CC1 it reads: "In Hollywood Strings, control of the vibrato is available for instruments that can be held indefinitely. The shorter notes in the other folders generally are not held long enough for EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP HOLLYWOOD STRINGS Chapter 5: Orchestral Technique 75 vibrato to be heard. But note that vibrato control is available for sustained notes in the playable runs. When vibrato control is available, it is the Mod Wheel (also called CC 1) that controls the depth of the vibrato. With the Mod Wheel all the way down (at or near a value of 0) the note is played non-vibrato. As you push the Mod Wheel up (increase CC 1), the depth of the vibrato increases." A'm i correct to assume that in EW hollywood CC11 is used for the velocity or "presure" (expression) and CC 1 for dynamics (vibrato). To get more confused wherever i read people tend to says expression is the same as volume, as for EW that's not the case. EW uses it to control pp, mp, mf and ff (which is presure or continues velocity (presure)). Is my assumption regarding EW expression correct?
Late reply but yeah, EW has an older scheme where modwheel = vibrato, expression (cc11) = dynamics (the timbre of the sound). And cc7 for volume of course. That said, on the lighter patches the modwheel controls both vibrato and dynamics. Most other devs use modwheel/cc1 for dynamics nowadays.
Love this video! I do have a question though. I'm trying to figure out how to manually edit the MIDI sustain pedal in the piano roll, but there is no option for it. I can edit velocity, but there seems to be no option for sustain pedal on the notes. How do I edit the sustain on piano notes I add in manually?
Should we connect kontakt library wirh bsro articulate so that it work as we draw pattern for dynamic mod wheel. Or simply by right click and edit event will it work!?
Hey! Did I understand correctly that the dynamic portion could be recorded? There is no keyboard player and no midi cc ... Does that brso plugin help or how could it work? thanks for help.
Question: We create the MIDI OUT on the channel rack but we don't need to connect it to any specific channel (instrument), right? We just create the drawing and then open a pattern (say, cello) and on the control option we find the drawing we created....is that it? Nothing is happening. Actually, one thing happened: the drawing i made modulated the vibrato of the instrument and not it's modulation. Does it have to do with the plugin I am using (Edirol Orchestral)?
Hi cool video, but when i trying it is not working i did step be step like you but is not working.. need some special setting in Kontakt? or just groupsA1 A2 ...? Thank you :)
I'd been getting by with a cheap keystation keyboard with a modwheel for the last few years. But I just got an 88 key keyboard with proper key action or properly weighted keys as a gift. But it does not have a modwheel whereas my old cheap keyboard did have one and I used it a fare amount for string orchestras. I really want to use the new keyboard but the lack of modwheel is a huge hit. Does anyone have a tip or any suggestions. Or any recommendation for external controler that can be used as a modwheel? Thank you.
When i use BRSO in the same piano roll to change articulations, the expression curve that i draw affects the staccatos too, which is kinda anoying. Any way to prevent that? Or maybe its just from the library i got, (the free BBC discover one)
Hey bro, I'm drawing my curves but it doesn't apply on my instrument. Any tips ? I inserted BRSO into my instrument but it still doesnt apply when ever i press play after i drew my curve
How to do it in ableton?? Im so confused been searching for tutorial but can't seem to find one that is similar to your method. Any ableton user that knows, pls help :(

With his mouse pointer ig Like we do for velocity, there's an option called control when you open piano roll, there you can find different articulations if available for that instrument
Love so much ur videos :D But.... Fondamentaly.. What is the difference between Expression / Dynamics and Volume ?... Because the result on a controller is the same : raise or decrease the volume for a note. But I know what it should theorically do on an instrument. Making the player playing with less or more density. I use only velocity and volume automation because i can't hear the difference for the rest.... So please ?
@@AlexMoukala CC7 is global volume, CC11 is expression. CC11 is always a percentage of CC7. So CC7 at 50% and CC11 at 100% give 50% vol. as does CC7 at 100% and CC11 at 50%. CC7 at 50% and CC11 at 50% give you 25% global volume.
It depends of the quality of your sample libraries. Using very good libraries, you will notice the difference, for example, in between volume and dynamics.
Yeah I tried as well. If we can have someone like Alex talk to image line to make that happen. I believe he has a good connection with them and a big enough fan base to get some things done.

Can't you program the modwheel to send any midi you want? I thought modwheel defaults to midi cc 1 and sends the full range 1 to 127.
I don't think we can do that. Thats why we are given different modwheels (in MIDI OUT) for different articulations

Expression and volume, usually, both regulate volume itself

Mod means expression, expression means volume, volume means the dB level on Mixer. That's what CC means for musicians in DAW.
