    Scott! I have searched UA-cam several times over the past year looking for a clear and concise tutorial to help me understand these MIDI concepts. I have watched several videos and downloaded books on the topic. They all explain the basics but do not connect the dots with a practical working example. I am so grateful that I found this video today! It is a game changer. Please accept my donation of $10 for this compilation of awesomeness! I love the GIFs, makes an otherwise dry & confusing topic humorous and fun to watch. Thank you, thank you, super thank you. Best ever.

    I keep coming back to your videos because you're an incredible teacher - truly. My husband and I are learning so much from you. I'm an old school musician and back in the 90's/00's we just didn't have this kind of tech readily available so we never learned how to do anything beyond stomping on individual Boss pedals on a massive pedal board. But now that we're back playing out big shows, I'm trying to get us fully up to speed on the latest tech that can make the job easier, and you keep delivering! We've got equipment that we've only scratched the surface on learning but you're blowing the doors wide open for us. THANKS AGAIN!

    Well done! The funnel hierarchy helped me to understand the differences in the message "types" and what they truly control. This was the basic information that I really needed, and that everyone else skipped over and then went straight into the more complicated material.

With regard to MIDI, which is what brought me here, you are doing exactly what I want to do. This is great. I've come back to MIDI after a few years away and somewhat giving up b/c it is so mind bending at time. For me, I'm programming MidiPad 2 on my iPad to control things within Amplitube 5 like switching presets and turning on and off pedals. With the help of your video, I think I generally have it working the way I want (or at least I can envision how it should come together!), What I am still looking for is an app that generates MIDI signals from my iPad that allows for the Control Change values to be changed as if it were a dial/knob/slider. So I could assign say a volume knob in Amplitube but then turn it up or down with a slider. I suspect something like that is out there, I just haven't figured out what it is.
    Like at about 20:00, you're talking about the Feedback value. I want to send a signal (or I guess really a series of signals) that allow me to select the full range of that CC#, not just a single value.
    I'll get there . . .

    Excellent tutorial! I've been using a Yamaha QY-100 Midi sequencer for years. It took me some time though to get used to the difference in the ordering of the program numbers between the sequencer & a separate midi controller. The 0 - 127 vs 1 - 128 general midi divide can require some mental gymnastics at first. ...StrictlyDAWless

    Hello Scott ! This is the BEST by fay video to teach the basic of Midi. I am attempting to use my DAW (S1) with hope of controlling VST & Multi-Timbral VST's. No one has gone as far as you to explain the concepts of how I might go about doing such? I am now excited to try again! I am tired of building out templates for each articulation in an orchestra. That takes forever and I end up with a Massive Template. Which neither of those are desirable at all.

    Thanks for the overview, it really helped. I took a Community College class in synthesizers in 1977 (oh yeah, boomer here) and all they had then was the analog synth, one of the first MOOGs that didn't have all the patch cords, just knobs and switches to patch things together. I learned some valuable things from that class about how synthetic sounds are made. Fast forward to 2018, the kids are raised and an inheritance windfall comes along and I have enough money to afford a used synthesizer. HOLY GOD, what do all these buttons and sliders do? Why do some of them work and what do the numbers mean? Why do they work some times and fail in accordance with Murphy's law? Well, it turns out that when luck fails, turn to skill to get you through! Now that I have an overview of the concepts at play, the cryptic manuals will start to make sense. I really enjoyed the memes and visual clues that you added to the video, nice touch.

    Thank you Scott. Excellent vid, very informative. I watched it once before, sometime back. It makes more sense to me now, after exposing myself to using midi mapping. I am using AUM along side Loopy Pro. On the mapping side AUM is top of the heap. And loopy pro is also outstanding but only now coming up to speed with midi. The good thing is they can be used together, one acting as a plugin to the other and in the most complex ways imaginable. Well this video opens up a whole other side of midi mapping on those with virtual midi bought into play. It’s a creators dream scape but virtual midi is under used. No video’s on it but it seems to be a whole universe of creativity all of its own. It’s a lot to learn this midi solution stuff but an adventure of sorts and a whole wide universe of possibilities is how it seems.

      @@ScottUhlMusic Yes Loopy Pro, it really is something unusually special. Mike Tyson the creator recently promised more work in development around midi. He promised big things coming. The way custom applications can be self built opens things up, a lot of scope for shaping the workspace for specialised individual workflow. Midi actually works well now as is with the midi learn function and all. In AUM you can find Loopy Pro at the top of the list of midi units while opening a new midi channel if you have loopy installed on your iPad.

      Thanks! And is the pedal a midi pedal or expression pedal? I’ve reviewed the expression footswitch, and the stomp only gets 2 buttons for the expression input. But if it’s midi, you basically get as many buttons as you want.
      Funny timing, I JUST shot a video about expanding your hx stomp with midi and expression haha

  • @Hakucho64
    @Hakucho64 2 роки тому

    Very clear video, thanks for making it. You say that CC messages are "further down the funnel" than PC messages. That might be true for your HX Stomp, but I don't think it's necessarily the case for other devices. In general, PC messages simply mean "change the entire mode of the device to this new mode" (which for a synth could be the voice being used), whereas CC messages simply mean "set this variable to this value" (which for a synth might mean to change the volume). In other words, I don't think it's always true that CC messages have a meaning that's specific to the currently selected program.

      Thanks for the comment, and glad you liked the video! And I did this video on the hx stomp because it is small and easy to film, but I’ve done this method on countless pieces of gear… hx stomp, helix, Spdsx, Roland FA keyboard, voice live 3, rc 300, and more. In all of those cases, the “funnel” I talk about here was accurate. PC chooses the patch, and then CC changes parameters within the patch. Some other pieces of gear might not follow it, but with all the gear I’ve used, it did so far.

    Great video! ive made a pretty useful midi device called midi goblin (bunch of videos on my channel) - it can send program change messages and also send groups of midi cc values (patches) for user defined devices and do a bunch of other things too. I didnt realize how popular stompboxes were. Im working on adding a little trigger system for midi goblin so if it receives a specific msg, itll send patches, program change msgs and batches of them. Should be really useful. Ill post a video of the trigger function when its done, you might find it pretty useful!

      I tried messing around with my lighting at church but it doesn't make any sense like when I think doing this would make this happen it doesn't, also my thing has something called bank, but all the videos I have seen don't have anything called bank in it. Is there a discord server that I can join to get more help. The one I found doesn't help me that much.
