Thank you for making this video. I feel this will not only help me with my orchestra/trailer stuff, but also with different types of genres of music since it's helping me be reminded of the importance of tactifully layering my sounds.
Man , thank you for these videos. For someone with a background in electronic music production these tutorials are sweet, you are great at putting things in perspective and contextualize them in a cinematic production environment. Kudos to you!! :D
Hi Alex, How you can choose so easily one (or more) group(s) in the playlist ? For example 1:26 & 1:43 - 1:46 ? It looks that you just click once and those Groups (+ their channels + automation clips) are ready for listening. I have also created Groups in the playlist but if I right-click only that Group channel, it doesn't choose automatically those channels underneath that Group (I have to left-click all those channels underneath the Group separately). My goal is to be able to choose one or more groups (+their automation clips too) from the Playlist easily & without too much clicking. It would be very handy to listen for example only Percussion, if I want to. Thanks!
It's ALT + Right Click to solo the group, or ALT + Left Click to activate / disable it. :) More infos and shortcuts in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ekReYnYA5a0/v-deo.html
Alex, I just found your videos tonight. Thank you so much! Biggest tip I got out of this was the Voxengo Equalizer! I had been looking for a graphic equalizer and you gave a great demonstration of how to use and read it! Thank you! Definite sub!
That sounds AMAZING. Did you ever produce the entire thing? I would LOVE to listen to it. EDIT: Nevermind. Found it in your comment link. Thanks! Awesome!
Hi Alex, What kind of mouse are you using ? I would like to widen / narrow the main view in the piano roll and in the playlist. My goal is to speed up my composing process by using mouse to widen and narrow the main views (without manually clicking anything in the playlist or in the piano roll). It seems (1:28) that you can widen and narrow view with mouse.
Alex Hello, excuse me but did you created something like template for logic yet? Or something like that?... I am checking your work for some time and you friend is key for every sucessfull composer.
Haha, Junkie XL is a monster. He made a tutorial on the way he wrote percussion on Mad Max by the way, go check it out on his channel if you missed it.
Hey broham. This is a great channel and I love your work. I unfortunately can't give anything monetary wise for now until make significant income but I love what you do. Would you able to make a video on the different types of instruments you use and why you use them? I think that would be interesting and helpful.
Hey tanish, I'd say I own/tried a very small quantity of them, although I was considering the idea of makign videos about the various library I personally use and recommend. Maybe in the future. :)
Ciao Alex! intanto complimenti, ho trovato tutti i tuoi video davvero interessanti! Volevo chiederti se i suoni "booms", "trailer hits" e "downer" sono presi tutti dalla libreria "DAMAGE - Heavyocity". Grazie mille!!
yo buddy. i really like your tutorials. i even modified my template after the percussion one, but lo, I still struggle there to the point of near incompetence.
+The Slanted Room / Music Here's a thing I did specifically to get good at percussion: sit down for a few hours and write as many percussive riffs as you can, try to make them at least 30 seconds long. Rinse and repeat for hours on end until you start you get decent at it!
Alex I found your video's very helpfull. But I'm quite struggling with blending in the braaams with the horns. Can you upload a tutorial on that? Also I'm wondering what the "Whiiiiep" sound is
hey Alex which library is the filtered horn brass swell from? also with your layered trailer hits do you ever send any or all the layered hits to a reverb? or does that make everything too muddy? if you do use reverb on the send do you prefer to use a convolution or algorithmic reverb?
For the horn: if you mean the braaaam sound, I think it's from Impact Soundworks Juggernaut. As for the hits: I do send them to the reverb like everything else, just way less though. Don't want percussive sounds to be too much reverbered or they'll lose their power and create mud in the mix indeed. The reverb I use is ValhallaRoom, so algorithmic!
Alex I am curious how you handle reverb? Do you apply reverb to every instrument and tweak them separately? Do you put a reverb on the master track? Thank you!
I use parallel reverbs (separate mixer tracks to with 100% wet reverb, to which I send part of the signal of the instruments). I explain that a bit here but I'll make a new video eventually: ua-cam.com/video/hG0dXm3esPA/v-deo.html
Those are just different copies of the same automation, which slighlty changes the BPM of the song later on. Anyway, I talked a little bit about CC modulation on the strings video I think. What did you specifically want to know about that?
Ah, that makes sense but I thought it was possible to assign multiple variables to the same automation track? Ah whatever works. Yeah you did talk about CC modulation. I only just realised that the CC1, CC2, etc values are not set in stone (I thought they were universally the same) so I guess that falls away. Would be kind of interesting to see how and where you actually draw the expression and the logic behind that but I guess the string video is pretty good at explaining already. (Oh and I also had some trouble figuring out how to access CC modulation in FL, but I think I got it now! (show_parameters))
Great tutorial! Thank you! How do you deal with both the downer and low sub hit hitting at the same time? Won't there be some frequency clashing? Just eq to taste as usual?
EQ to taste indeed. But generally speaking, when layering, you want to select your layers in such a way that they naturally sit around different frequencies. So instead of clashing, they complete each other.
Very, very good! Congratulations! You are a great composer! I wanted to know ... Can I create a song of this quality on a weak computer? I use Edirol Orchestral ... I've tried downloading better VSTs, but it's too much heavy, my PC is On-board.
Thanks! Hmm, it depends on what you mean with "weak" computer. It's definitely best to have a machine with nice CPU and RAM tho. Mine's quite ok. Got an i7 3.4 GHz, and 16GB of RAM, although it sometimes crumbles when projects get too complicated.
Hello Alex! Thx you for so informative tutorials, they inspire me so much! Today I bumped into your track Doomsday! Are you working with a Realy slow motion?
Thanks! That's one of the labels I work for. I'm actually taking a bit of a break from trailer music right now, but yeah I published a few tracks with RSM.
i have a question on this topic: how do you hanlde tonality when layering different hits/booms? the taiko rolls from hybrid tools 2 for example are tonal, so you can play the bass note easily. cinematic hits and low booms on the other hand often dont have that kind of tonality. the bass might be conflicting and the problem might not even be noticeable without a subwoofer. hits from gravity for example have a really nice sound but i keep sticking to 8dio because i always know the exact pitch. that makes it a lot easier to play alongside other instruments with bass frequencies. whats your take on this?

Don't remember where I got that ASTR sample right now, but all "ALXM" samples in my library are custom samples I made for myself. In Falcon Punch's case, I made it by using the same layering technique I explained in this clip actually. Took 9 different samples, layered them, post-processed them a bit and exported the final product to a single audio file: the infamous Falcon Punch. :D
Will probably make one, although the process is actually very similar to what I did with the trailer hits in this tutorial. I just did it more precisely by using volume automations on every single sample, and some EQ and compressors on top of them, but the logic I applied is the same I explain here. ;)
Alex Moukala That sounds great. Yeah Ive done a lot of mixing samples and sounds, Youve created some nice hits with mixing them. Looks like people are interested in seeing this process so it could be good to talk about that sometime in the future. :) Great vids keep it up!
Ahm, at this moment, I can't afford to buy those libraries, I am not living in the country that earns dollar and euros, instead I am in a country that earns peso, and I only rely on free downloads. but anyway, you are a great man, You speak clearly in your tutorials, I can easily understand even though, maybe same as you, I am a "no how" in music, never gone to music school something like that, well anyway thanks man, you are great.
Ahm, Alex, mind to ask you on how to use the Hybrid Tools?, I found it in Torrent, I install it but I do not know what is really the use of it, unlike in Nexus, I find it in the plugins, can you help about this?
+Dragens2 Not that much, but that's also because I store and organize favorite samples in such a way to know exactly where to find X when I need it for Y in a matter of seconds, without endlessly browsing through all the sample libraries I have haha
Oh I see. I saw some of your videos and was very impressed. I am learning to make soundtrack music for a big private project but couldn't really reproduce what you do. How long are you doing this?
+Dragens2 I feel you! Give yourself some time to practice, and you'll get there. :) In my case, I've been making music since February 2013, started from square one without any type of musical skills or knwoledge.
Awesome. I am playing the piano since I am 9 years old and have very much the "problem" of the muscle memory thing. I am making my own music since I am 14. that is 12 years now. But I have no idea how you can produce so gorgeous stuff. I have a track on my youtube channel if you wonder how my music sounds. edit: And thank you for the kind wirds :)
by "completely dry sound fx" do you mean fx without extra processing? because i consider a sound recorded in a studio wouthout much room and withour processing "completely try". sound effects are usually processed alredy. so it depends on the sound and the track, if it needs more reverb. when you are not sure if a sound effect is too dry, try adding reverb. if it was too dry you should notice the difference.
+ninjayeahvideos The sooner you'll get rid of the wanting to get quality stuff for free mentality, the sooner you're going to make a quantum leap quality jump with your music. And that is mostly because, free stuff is very rarely of quality.
You can make your own by using creative common raw hits, booms freely available on internet. I made some of my own kontakt hits/impacts like this. It's fun and you will learn a lot.
+ninjayeahvideos I see, and I understand then! But even in that position, I'd suggest you to do yourself a favor and get a Composer Cloud Subscription if you can. Costs about 30$ a month, gives you access to the full catalog of EastWest Libraries. There's all kinds of quality stuff, from orchestral libs to percussive, to ethnic and band stuff as well. Maybe Google that. :)
I have always a question in mind, are the people in “ready to use” choir really saying something or just murmuring nonsense(in a good way) to make the sound.
Hey Alex, huge fan of your videos. As you can see I'm new so behind (still haven't got to your new ones yet, working through the back catalogue). Where did you get the "downer" samples, and the taiko rolls? The taiko roll doesn't sound like anything is rolling, how is that achieved? Also, do you have advice (or plans to make a similar tutorial) on getting that cinematic trailer hit "growl" that's popular sometimes (this big growly/distorted hit here: ua-cam.com/video/tr71US77p3Q/v-deo.html - this is from your sidechain compression video). Anyway, awesome channel. Love it. Cheers!
The Taiko Rolls are from Hybrid Tools 2, the Downer is a custom-made sample, while the "Growl" is a sound category literally called "Braam" or "Megahorn". That one specifically is from Hybrid Tools 2 as well I think, like the Taiko Rolls. But you can find Braams in many trailer libraries.
Hey guys. i have a problem. I´m a beginner-composer but i never get on a louder level although i try cutting, paning, compressing etc. i would be happy if you could help me out/give advice. This is a song i made for the 8dio contest but i can´t get louder without sounding flat or overcompressed...when i compare it to guys like thomas bergersen there is a huuuge volume difference but it sounds still very clear and good...soundcloud.com/andreasgajewski/8dio-2016-stand-out-contest-submission-we-are-not-alone-by-andreas-gajewski I wish you a great day and greetings from Germany! - Andy
thank you for this tutorial. imo you talk too much without getting to the point if you know what i mean. not trying to criticize you or anything just a little feedback on how to improve. :)

Cool vid, but what are these "tempo" automations?

Those are just different copies of the same automation, which slighlty changes the BPM of the song later on.

Ah, that makes sense but I thought it was possible to assign multiple variables to the same automation track? Ah whatever works.

i have a question on this topic: how do you hanlde tonality when layering different hits/booms?
the taiko rolls from hybrid tools 2 for example are tonal, so you can play the bass note easily.
cinematic hits and low booms on the other hand often dont have that kind of tonality.
the bass might be conflicting and the problem might not even be noticeable without a subwoofer.
hits from gravity for example have a really nice sound but i keep sticking to 8dio because i always know the exact pitch.
that makes it a lot easier to play alongside other instruments with bass frequencies.
whats your take on this?
When this happens and is disturbingly noticeable, I simply change the pitch of the samples until their tonalities fit in with the rest.
Alex,
What software package offers the best impacts for a deep rich hit that can be layered from there?
Action Strikes has a nice deep hits collection as far as I remember, Audio Imperia Scenes From The Multiverse has a few samples like that too.
Thankyou! Love the videos..and look forward to more tutorials.
i dont know wich plugins i should use for scores.. im confused and i have a lots but never sounds so FAT when i play it

was there any processing done to the sounds?
+LiionDZN almost none at this point, just some very subtle EQ I think.
AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! :)
whats your go-to choir library?
Right now it's suerely Metropolis Ark 1.
Even tho it's not a choir-only library.
How can you scroll so smooth through everything? I feel my FL Studio feels more delayed. Any options?
You can edit the smoothness of the animations in the settings.
Then again, you also need a good enough CPU for that.
What is ALXM and ASTR? They sounds like worth the buy packs.
Don't remember where I got that ASTR sample right now, but all "ALXM" samples in my library are custom samples I made for myself.

Yessss
Do you add reverb to the sound fx like hits and risers?
Yeah, not as much as I do with orchestral instruments however.
how do you think about completely dry sound fx? does it make any problems?
algorithmic reverb i guess?
convolution seems to work best with instruments that dont have a lot of reverb already.
and you use metropolis ark.
by "completely dry sound fx" do you mean fx without extra processing?
because i consider a sound recorded in a studio wouthout much room and withour processing "completely try".
sound effects are usually processed alredy. so it depends on the sound and the track, if it needs more reverb.
when you are not sure if a sound effect is too dry, try adding reverb.
if it was too dry you should notice the difference.

This is a song i made for the 8dio contest but i can´t get louder without sounding flat or overcompressed...when i compare it to guys like thomas bergersen there is a huuuge volume difference but it sounds still very clear and good...soundcloud.com/andreasgajewski/8dio-2016-stand-out-contest-submission-we-are-not-alone-by-andreas-gajewski
I wish you a great day and greetings from Germany!

thank you for this tutorial. imo you talk too much without getting to the point if you know what i mean. not trying to criticize you or anything just a little feedback on how to improve. :)
+X7 and I'm already making an effort to not talk too much! :D
Thanks! I made the music and then edited the video to synchronise with this trailer ua-cam.com/video/VyvMcY_XsAM/v-deo.html
As usual, massive amounts of talking, barely any music.
Vangardia Of course! This is a tutorial! “Why to put this here” is far more useful and relevant than “put this here”
