  • Hi guys and welcome to another adventure video! In this video, my wife and I attempt an intermediate 4x4 trail towards Laurel Lakes located near Mammoth, CA. You guys have seen us take this car in the snow, in the mud, in rain, on the beach and sand but can it make it up a 4x4 trail in its stock form? Watch the video to find out!

    Tip for you: when you have a tire in the air, keep your foot in the throttle, x-mode needs a second to figure it out and apply wheel breaks. Looks like you were letting out to early

    That trail is sketchier than all the videos make it to be lol. My buddies and i made it to the lakes. We ran into a guy who took a 4x4 pickup out with his family. He was parked like halfway into the trail. We stopped to see how he was doing. He said, the trail ratings for the trail were way off lol. He said he normally drives a built out jeep, but with the family, the truck makes more sense. But he was creeped the heck out by the trail and his slightly modded pickup. Anyways he tagged along with us and we all made it down to the lake and he hated every moment of it LOL. There are some spots that really creeped me out, off-camber road only 1 vehicle wide and its covered in loose shale rock.

      That's why we turned around in our stock subaru outback wilderness lol. We do a lot of trails and knowing when to turn around is very important. One guy in the comments section said he did it in a stock toyota camry lol. Luckily for us, there were a ton of trails around that area that we can easily make. You gotta know your own cars capabilities plus your driving capabilities. We will be back in our off road built Ford Raptor though. This was just to see if our Subaru Outback Wilderness can make it undamaged and we didn't want to damage our car 🥲

    You gave it a great effort. I like that you were very cautious. We had a similar experience with our Honda CRV AWD and exploring some gravel roads up by Mt. Rainier. You never know what your car can do until you try, but always being mindful of its limitations is a wise decision.

      Ya we know the limitations of the car and ourselves. I wish we had another car like our friends truck come with us. That would have given us a little more confidence but being alone definitely made us play it safe. Thank you for watching!

    *great job. If you're not having traction issues air UP to normal street pressure regain your normal clearances... practice tire placement to mitigate clearance issues, our GX460 has 8.6" of clearance and we're not lifted*

      @youraveragejoeadventures yes I feelz ya on the lack of low-range... All the AWD offroaders on YT seem to get used to it I guess... I've never driven a AWD car offroad so I have no idea lol really 😅

      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD it's a very capable car though. It's subaru heritage makes it good in wet, muddy, snowy and sandy conditions. It got us to 80% of the trails we attempted. And driving it across all terrains, we had confidence we can make it through with the AWD system. Stay tuned when we return to this spot in our other off road rig coming in a future episode, a dedicated 4x4 body on frame 🙂

    I have a big camper van I take down trails like this. And before going on any unknown trail I've learned to stop and give myself a little mental speech. Keep monitoring the road conditions, it's ok to turn around, always be asking if it's time to back out. If you don't do that I see so many people go too far and get stuck or stranded.
    It's ok to get stuck or stranded in a Jeep on a trail ride with friends, that's almost the goal. But not because you took a wrong turn and got lost or are just exploring looking for hiking opportunities.

    I appreciate seeing how the stock version does, so people can evaluate what they'd be getting on a purchase. But given the big difference that real off-road worthy tires can make, without changing anything else, I always like to see a test with a vehicle that's stock except for real offroad tires.
    PS: Kudos to you for making the safe and prudent decision.

      Thank you. We wanted to make it so bad too. It would have made a difference if we had a other vehicle with us in case we did get stuck. Luckily for us, there were a ton of trails in that area and we ended up finding one next to a hot spring, so it all worked out well. We will be back to try this again though, when we have a couple upgrades. 👍🏽

    Simple truth is you need a spotter for the subaru where a tacoma would roll right over wo worry., where the subaru excels is sharp hills due to shorter wheelbase, ice, and general everyday driving.. i have both so i can talk, and love both for what they are..

      I agree 👍🏽 We would have been more comfortable if we had a second car here. We don't mind doing mild trails alone but we always play it safe depending on trail conditions. It's always changing and you never know how it'll be next time you go on the same trail. We will be back to try this trail again!

    Great move to know your limits and discretion is the better part of valor. I have a Fozzy Sport and I know I need a lift and upgraded tires. I'll be making videos soon as well.

    Good call turning around. We got an SOW a week ago and been off-road once already. We took our truck off road 2 years ago and popped two tires on sharp rocks😏
    5 new tires and a tow truck bill later, we are a little cautious now.

    interesting video.. I have a subaru (non wilderness) did you try any of the automatic incline/decline options? I have a new underarmor that i want to see what its capable of. I forget what they are called, but in the snow my subaru outback is awesome in the Sierras.. Love the SFSU Gators tank!!

      It's a really good car in the snow. My wife graduated from SFSU! The under armor is great but this trail calls for a little bit more ground clearance(in our opinion). The under armor will protect you from hitting vital parts underneath the car but you can still high center if you don't have enough clearance 👍🏽

    Do some modifications to get it back out there raise it up a little higher put skid plates on the bottom of your vehicle

    In the 90s I had a friend that worked in a salvage yard, we had access to every Subaru. We would bring home any running Subaru that came in. You would be amazed at just how capable these small AWD cars are when you have no concern about damaging them. We even have gotten them stuck so bad that we had to roll them over sideways by hand to get them unstuck. The 4 speed early 80s wagons with low range transmissions were amazing off road.

      I believe it. They are truly capable. If this wasn't my daily driver/family car and didn't care about damaging it, it would easily make it up this trail. 👍🏽

    its not being scared. its being smart with an expensive vehicle. id do the same thing if I didn't have any backup.

    I’d recommend using proper hiking shoes next time. You’re both lucky not getting your feet hurt wearing slides.

      We had our hiking shoes in the car. We just had our slides on while we're driving. We were not trying to hike this trail. We we're trying to drive it.

      Nope. There's always snow there since it's up high in the sierras. Even in the summer, there's snow at the top of the mountains.

    Nice effort but never take a car to do a Jeeps job. My hideous 1992 XJ would dance over that trail while I sip root beer and think about the stock market. I dont blame you for not going all in if that thats a beautiful ride. Im getting one next month in that weird blue.

      We have a lifted off road-built Ford Raptor that would also make this a walk in the park but this video was to see if a stock Subaru Outback Wilderness can do it because they market it as an offroad capable car. While this car is great for different kinds of weather and some lighter forest roads, its lack of a low gear makes it harder to do a trail like this without risking damaging the car. This was to help anyone that is thinking of overlanding in a subaru outback and showing them the limitations of this car. If we did this in my Raptor, it would have been a short boring video. Of course a Jeep and Raptor can make this trail easily, but again, this was to showcase the Subaru Outback Wilderness.
      And lastly overlanding is not a competition. This car can make it if i didn't care about damaging it. Your Jeep may do this road easily, but if I had to drive across the country, I would take this Subaru Outback Wilderness over your Jeep just for the sheer comfort of this car and MPGs. Its all about what your trying to do and for us, we drive our car 90% on pavement and 10% off road. This is my daily driver that i take to work and my family around town. I would also rather take my lifted Ford Raptor over a Jeep any day.

    Was the CVT an issue?

      The CVT along with Xmode works really well in all the terrain we have taken this car, but what it lacks in is when we have to go slow and crawl over rocks. The system works way better when you keep your foot down but when you have to crawl over things slowly, it lacks the slower throttle response needed to go over rocks and you risk breaking something. The CVT has this very slight delay when you push the gas down and when it starts to move, then it moves too fast and when you're crawling over things, it really shows its weakness in that sense. But overall we love this car and have taken it in mud, snow, sand and dirt. It's really good on forest roads as well. The power is really good too but how it delivers it when trying to go slow, it's just not its fortay. Again, this is just our opinion after driving over 25000 miles on this car in the year we've had it.

      @@youraveragejoeadventures the Toyota CVT with a fixed actual gear for first gear seems like it would be well suited for a car that does some light off roading. Toyota and Subaru already collaborate on other vehicles

      @coleeto2 we have pushed this car beyond its limits (in our opinion) but for this location, we feel like it was way more than the car can handle (without breaking something!) We taken it in some light to moderate off roading with no issues but this location was pretty difficult to do for this car. If you check out our video when we went to Bowman Lake, that location has lots of rock gardens as well but the rocks in this location were way bigger and sharper. On this day, there was a bunch of subarus parked at the entrance assuming non of them wanted to risk taking their car in this trail neither. But we will be back to try again with a more capable vehicle! 🙂

    Put a real transmission back in the Subaru and it will once again be as capable as my 2005 and 2011 were. I have even been in a mudhole with my current CVT and it just quits like a stubborn mule.

      I agree. I know the CVT is more efficient in terms of fuel economy, but a real transmission would make this car even more capable than it already is. I know they gear the wilderness models a little more aggressive, but at the end of the day, it's still a CVT.

      @@youraveragejoeadventuresI have one of the first Wilderness using an LP Aventure 2 inch lift, bigger tires and a fortified rear end. The car performs better than any jeep that I owned on both the beach, highway and mud but the CVT failed at 62,000 miles. With today's warranty, that would not be covered.

      @johnstrand2247 oh wow! We also had the first year of the Outback Wilderness. We got it in 2022 when it first came out and had no issues. Luckily we got rid of it before our CVT failed because we used the car so much in our overlanding adventures. We put 25,000 in a year in a half but it was so fun to drive across the different terrains on it. I'm sure it'll get better over the years. We will miss that car but already loving our new overland rig👍🏽

      Subaru's CVT is probably the best CVT made. The Wilderness trims are seemingly very capable for unpaved fun in so many ways except for their transmission. It doesn't make sense to pair their light offroading trims with that transmission? Atleast add a crawling beginning gear for low speed high traction needs like some of the other manufacturer's CVT's. All the other Wilderness attributes and abilities make sense for unpaved fun fir sure though. Great segment !!!

      @Chubbydippin I agree 👍🏽 it was such a great car. If they put a CVT in all the other trims for efficiency but put a regular 6 speed auto in their Wilderness trims, that would be ideal! Most people don't need the Wilderness model but the ones that want it are usually trying to go on off road adventures, therefore it should have a more capable transmission and not the same as the other Outback trims not going off road. Easy fix! 🤙🏽

      I would hope a Jeep with a 4x4 and a rear locker would make this lol
      We also have a Ford Raptor, and it also made it up this trail with no problem at all. This video was to see if an AWD Subaru can do it.

      The Subaru has a long nose. It would be nice if we had a front bumper delete to increase the approach angle.

      I'm sure it is but I wouldn't have the subscribers I have without doing it. Studies show that not reminding people to subscribe greatly reduces your chances of them doing it. As a really small channel doing this, I have to do all I can to get it going. You don't have to subscribe if you don't want too. If you don't like how I do my content, no one is stopping you from clicking off it. Just move on buddy. No negativity is required unless that's how you do you.

      The car didn't last long on this trail. We went up a couple thousand feet and turned around. I was trying to explain that it wasn't made for this level of off roading. This car is a soft roader at best unless you modify it. If you don't like the content, you don't have to watch it. Read the comments, there's plenty of people that got the useful information i was trying to communicate in this video. This video was to answer the question "Can a STOCK Subaru Outback Wilderness make it up a 4x4 trail? How Capable is the car?" In which I answered that question from my personal experience with the car in this video. Maybe you should read the title first, so you can see what the video is about. 🤡

      I have my Ford Raptor at home thats lifted on 35 inch mud tires. This video was about seeing the capability of the Subaru Outback Wilderness. This would be too easy in my Raptor and would make for a more boring video 😅

      @@youraveragejoeadventures I did that one on 04 4runner, lift it and it really gets tougher. But yea with the raptor it will ve easier,, not like super easy but easier.

      @joshleal9811 I already did this trail in the Raptor and it was too easy. The only hard part we had a little trouble in was the switchback at the end because of how wide my truck is but with a spotter, it was too easy. As long as your patient about it, have a low gear transfer case with a rear locker, have 15 inch of ground clearance like my Raptor is set up, this was really easy.
