True Cape Charles Story - local hardware store - friday afternoon. I walked in, nobody was inside. While looking around a lady comes in needing a RV sewage hose. Lo and behold, that hardware store had one in a shelf worn package that had obviously been there a while. She went outside, got the owner, who...well...that part is coming.... She demanded a discount for the sewage hose because of the condition of the packaging.... The owner states clearly: "Mam, I'm not the one who needs that hose but I do have it, the price on the box is clear, it's 5PM on a Friday and my friends and have already drank enough that we don't care if you buy it or not....so, since it's after 5, if you want that hose you better make up your mind quickly..." She did buy the hose. She did express her dissatisfaction and if she didn't leave a review I'd be shocked.
The packaging😂. Presentation matters in business but a rural store is going to get stuck with product faded by florescent lighting etc. She didn't need the box and was lucky she found the product. Several years ago I was involved in a midsized hardware business and people want a discount for every reason they can make up. If they had a point I would agree to a discount. If not, they did not. It's a tough business to run but saying the drinking part and he does not care may be true but is just bad business. To be fair I said some things to keep some of the problem customers away when I had enough.
I am right across the James River from Amherst. If you want anything that's not outdoorsy to do, you usually have to come to Lynchburg. It's a peaceful place. I do want to add that Floyd has a huge music festival each year called Floyd Fest. People come from all over to see it.
Most of America is rural (97%). Most of America doesn't have internet, or has limited access. Also, $350,000 to $450,000 is for the wealthy, not the average American.
@@XO_HighIights yeah especially in southeast Kentucky where I live, $350K will get you a nice house and a lot of property which the vast majority of will be in the hills.
I'm so sad you didn't mention Floydfest in Floyd, VA. It's a pretty sizable folk music festival that happens there every summer and is a really cool vibe. Not many small towns have such a large music scene, Floyd is a super unique place.
I 66 has been improved and they have decreased traffic by about 30%. I live I. Falls Church, my son lives in Mt Jackson. I can get on the new express lanes and make it there in 90 minutes. I live in Coeburn and was surprised you didn't mention the Guest River Gorge. Beautiful rails to trails level hike and bike trail. It's only 5.3 miles but a gorgeous, scenic trail. Breathtaking vistas all along the river.
Tazewell, VA has one thing that can't be beat, a road named Back of the Dragon. It's 31 miles long with over 400 turns and a big elevation change, my old Honda Hurricane and I loved it!!!!
Tazewell is a good little place, but I really heavily prefer nearby Pulaski! Has a lot more stuff but the same feel, and you can still drive to Tazewell easily.
Just moved to Floyd from Maryland. I've never been happier. It feels good to be out of the DC bubble. Oh, I live way out in country and have 1G internet.
I live in Luray VA, just stunning views. I'm 5 min from Lake arrowhead head (where I take my boat to fish) 3 mins to hawksbill creek (good trout fishing and walks) 10 minuets to get to the Shenandoah River. 10 min to get to the national forest and Skylyn Drive. Awsome place if your into that kind of environment.
Just found your channel and really enjoying it! Virginia is my home state and I was a little disappointed when you said you couldn't fine 10 great little towns but, growing up in Amherst you finished strong! LOL! You have such a great voice and delivery! Cheers!
Wow...I was surprised to see Amherst on the list but I totally agree it's a great place to live. That's where my mom is from and I've often thought about how it would be to live there!
I lived in Canada, California, and Oregon. Canada was wonderful. California and Oregon were the worst, high Crime, poverty, and homelessness everywhere. Moved to Virgina 5 years ago, never going to move again. I love it here.
I am now living in S. Cali. and plan to move out of Cali for my retirement, but haven't made up mind where to go yet. Virginia is the place now in my mind but i have no idea about this state, would you give me an advise about this state. Please.
My advice is don't bring any far left liberal views. There's a reason no one wants to live in liberal towns and cities. Crime, drugs, and taxes go way up and quality of life goes way down. Keep VA a historical, pro America state. NOVA needs to be separated.
Fun fact about Floyd. There is only one stoplight in the entire county, where Rte. 8 and Hwy 221 intersect. And when my dad was a boy they used a cheaper three bulb design, which meant green was on the bottom, red on top for one direction (don't know which it was).
The Cape Charles ferry was because of (wait for it) a railroad. The Chesapeake and Ohio had rail service down the Eastern Shore, which it continued to Norfolk by towing rail car barges from Cape Charles to the Brooke Ave. Terminal (which had tracks only within the terminal itself).
Parents live in Lynchburg... I live in upper Michigan. Virginia as a whole is a beautiful state and they have some great schools and obviously a lot of history
Lived in Stuarts Draft VA for 17 years. Good internet and not far from Staunton and Charlottesville. Just a short ten minute drive to the blueridge pky. Could have definitely made this list.
I live in Fairfax and moved there from NJ for work in DC years ago. I'm nearing retirement and thinking one of these small towns may be a good place to move to. I absolutely LOVE the Appalachian mountains in VA. I hike parts of the Appalachian trail as often as I can. I'm also a motorcycle rider and ride my bike out there several times a month. It is an absolutely awesome place for motorcycle riders.

I live in Amherst County. Beautiful place. Everyone pretty much drives to Lynchburg for anything special they need. Lynchburg gets good rankings for a mid size city too.
It’s interesting you mentioned Amherst, north of Lynchburg. Many towns in that area like Concord are fairly nice. I am in the process of buying a second home in Appomattox, population 2046, 25 minutes to Lynchburg or Farmville.
@@jenniferbarberi8584 Beautiful area. Looked at a few homes online, but they went pending before I can arrange a showing. Finally put an offer in on one in Appomattox.
You should have included Madison, VA. Great small town with good internet. 40 minutes outside of Charlottesville and 15 minutes from Culpepper. Also right near 29, so easy access to the highway.
Floyd city (as of 2021) has 450 people, but it's a seriously small town. VERY hippy ville now too! Now, floyd COUNTY has 15k population. I lived up there for a time - beware of snow storms. Higher elevation and I lived through several blizzards up there - one that took down the cell tower. Without power for several weeks. I now live in Claudville, next county south. It's great for being between large cities but still country.
I’ve lived in Virginia for 30 years…I grew up here…90% of the “small towns” are on the western side of the state…everything along I-95 is basically city
Southwest Virginia native here! Specifically Norton, VA. Highly, highly surprised to see Coeburn on this list since it’s sort of known as the crack headquarters in our area. Not that’s it’s all bad, but I definitely feel like it has the least to offer compared to it’s surrounding towns. Also, healthcare in our area is struggling as a whole, but you can get decent care around an hour away towards Tennessee. Big Stone Gap would be the town I recommended. It’s getting an influx of people moving there. The real estate market is great there. Also, more and more new small businesses are moving there. It’s truly becoming a charming little town! Just my two cents 😊
Enjoy your videos, very informative. Virginia is a beautiful place to live of course I’m partial because I grew up there. “Virginia is for Lovers”, is the state tourism slogan. You will see LOVE signs all over parts of Virginia especially along the eastern shore.
I grew up in NOVA and went to school at UVA. I’ve lived in several states and cities since school and still yearn to return to Virginia. I’m on the coast of FL now and want to retire back in VA - certainly not NOVA but west/southwest
Most of the towns grew up around the railroad and the only reason they survived. It's one reason a lot of them went downhill too and lost money. Covington VA used to be a stop before going to the Homestead and they still have these really huge buildings that were nice hotels at one time. They're all abandoned just about now. It was a nice place at one time and so was Clifton that has a record number of tracks and was a huge Depot for trains at one time. Now it's just a town not many people go to.
I live in Abingdon and it’s a great place to live, and a beautiful area. I was surprised to see my home in your video as you photographed houses in Valley St in our historic district. I have enjoyed your videos, lots of interesting information.
Got to remember that steam railroads needed to have a water/coal stop about every 100 miles... So the towns/places that got picked won the lottery back then
Strausburg, definitely lol. My father is from Woodstock and when he was dating my mom (way back in 1965) he always told her the wild girls were from Strasberg😂😂😂. The Shenandoah region is absolutely breathtaking. My dad passed but I still have family there and when I visit I always think about moving there. I am tired of the eastern part of Virginia.
Wish you had included more about walkability and density in your analysis. As folks get older, it's unrealistic to expect them to be able to drive everywhere. Living in a more dense but still rural community with lots of public transportation options is potentially a great option for someone who is looking to grow old somewhere.
Most people drive shortly before they die or become bed bound. Driving is easier than walking. Handicap people drive but can’t walk. Not sure why this is an issue. Driving is a very easy task. It just requires attention which old people are better at since they aren’t trying to text.
My grandmother drove in Floyd several years beyond what she should have given advancing dementia, because they don't even have county transportation for the elderly and disabled there and she had to get to Food Lion, Family Dollar and the beauty parlor. Fortunately, she never had more than a minuscule parking lot bump when she was 94.
@@user-tb7rn1il3qright, you either die in a car accident at 80 or terrorize the roads for 15-20 years until you're bed bound. I'm joking, but realistically older people are a higher liability and this is why car insurance goes up when you reach the later years in life.
Just moved from Front Royal 18 months ago to Florida to take care of my Mother who just recently passed. I will never forge the 15 years of living in the Shenandoah Mtns and the beauty of the fall colors off of my back porch, how I so miss living there.
Grew up in northern Virginia, my mom is from Coeburn and we were there every summer and thanksgiving. Lots of camping and hiking with fun swim spots. We still have my grandparents' property down there.
Good choices. I moved to Roanoke and frequently drive through several of these small towns... all very pretty, friendly, and affordable. Of course, if you ever do a "moderate size town roundup", gotta get Roanoke in the list. Progress and growth is visible around town but the area still retains its charm and amenities.
I live Southwest of Winchester,Va. The Shenandoah Valley is beautiful and we have all the amenities of a larger city. I have a Gig of internet and it’s quite reliable. The views in the valley are stunning. We are surrounded by history.
I was born, raised, stationed and lived a good part of my adult life in Virginia. I moved away due to the crazy taxes, crime (which is everywhere but really bad in the city and surrounding cities where I lived), insane old laws that are still enforced that make little to no sense (won't elaborate), lack of support for fathers as far as getting rights to their own children in divorce proceedings (if you haven't experienced it, you don't understand), insanely high cost of living to pay ratio. I lived in upstate NY and it was much lower. Overall bad attitudes in Hampton Roads, tolls everywhere, crappy roads, and the fact that in Hampton Roads you'd be lucky to meet anyone actually from Virginia. It's all transients. That meaning all kinds of driving styles and the traffic is horrendous. I've lived in 8 States in my military service and as a native Virginian I can honestly say it's some of the worst I've seen. Also, Hampton Roads is overpopulated and falling apart. I truly despise that area of Virginia. I strongly recommend not moving there. If you do, you'll see before long. I know live in a small farming town in NC and it's night and day from Hampton Roads VA. 100% better. Oh yeah almost forgot to mention. A bunch of nuts up there too.
Hampton Roads is mostly military and the only reason I’m here. There really isn’t much to do if your under 21. Of course the things you brought up are the other reasons nobody wants to be stationed here.
I'm a native Virginian. There is SO MUCH MORE to Virginia than what you experienced in Hampton. Yes, Hampton sucks. Go west past Richmond and you can find wonderful communities both large and small.
I agree with the Hampton Roads area. I lived there for four years not long ago and it is falling apart. Not sure where all the money from personal property taxes goes but it sure doesn’t go to fixing the roads.
From someone who was transplanted to SW Virginia 20 years ago. Lived 8 years in Abingdon. Let's talk about the hospital. As a pastor I saw things in that hospital that would curl your hair. Most people go to Bristol or Kingsport. I have moved my entire life, and this is one of the two hospitals I would never go to. We liked living there. Great schools. Drug problems, but every school has a drug problem. Bristol has everything you need that is not there (either exit 7 or the other side of the city at the outdoor mall). A word about the population. Your figure is accurate. However, it does not include the surrounding area. Lots of people live 'out in the county.' So, the population for it is probably double. However, isolated and rural is never far away. Also, there is a great theater there. I mean a real live honest to goodness theater. Coeburn. Who would live in Coeburn? Norton is not what you think. Their hospital in Norton is a band-aid station. Most people go to Kingsport, TN. Coeburn is 5 min. from Wise where there is a campus of UVA. It is in the middle of nowhere. Floyd. We currently live 20 minutes from Floyd. It is fun. I can't imagine living there. Hospital description is accurate. You are 10 minutes from I-81. Lots of music and craft events here.
What about Bedford Va? The world’s best little town. It’s the best place to live. You’re 30 some minutes from Roanoke, Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake and the peaks of otter. I say that is pretty special.
I've lived in VA for 42 years, No. VA, 37 in Fairfax and 5 in Leesburg, looking to buy a 2nd property in a more rural area, all these in the video area good, I'd also add Onancock which is just north of Cape Charles, and also Staunton, Lexington, Buena Vista area. Abingdon is great too, also Damascus not far and on the VA Creeper Trail, called Trail town, 7 major trails come together there, including the Appalachian Trail. Farmville is also very pretty.

Parts of my family tree lived in Floyd. Also in nearby Christiansburg and Pilot. I went to school in Blacksburg, so the area is familiar to me, but I'll confess I didn't go to Floyd that often.
I grew up in Amherst (about 20 minutes west at that traffic circle picture by route 60) and let me tell you my jaw dropped to see it on a list. But yeah, nailed the observation, it really is gorgeous everywhere there, it’s kinda nestled by small mountains in just above every direction. Would highly recommend.
why would you leave Virginia? such a beautiful state
funny thing about that…I haven’t left lol
I love driving down route 60 from midlothian and stopping in Amherst before going up and over the mountains, good memories w the boys camping and exploring out there. Was stoked to see it here as well :)
Abingdon is a great place. Some of my kin hail from there. You forgot to mention the Barter Theater, Martha Washington Inn, and the Virginia Highlands Festival.
Oh you’re in my neighborhood. The southwest of Virginia is beautiful. Also Hardy Va, Rocky Mount Va. Smithmountain lake Va is amazing! All the places you have mentioned are very beautiful and a great placers to live! We have visited all of the places you mentioned.
I spent time in Virginia when I was stationed at Naval Station Norfolk. I visited Virginia Beach, and visited Busch Gardens.
My paternal Grandpa hailed from Virginia.
I'm toying with the idea of retiring to a little town named Monterey in Virginia. I have an old, old friend who lives there and I have visited a few times. Very small, very quaint, and absolutely gorgeous views.
Lived in Cape Charles it was amazing 🥰 the walk to the beach is literally 5 mins at most. Awesome ppl. Great restaurants. Wonderful views
I moved to California from Virginia and absolutely love VA! Drove Route 66 with my daughter and doggo to land in Cali.
Nice 😎
I did the same thing a year ago! Except with a cat haha I miss VA and my friends there but CA is absolutely amazing. Allergies and weather weren't good in VA.
California is a socialist hellhole, why on earth would anyone want to move there?
Ughhhh, you left wonderful Virginia for the land of fruits and flakes? Why????
@@karlabritfeld7104 CA is expensive but it isn’t like VA is cheap either. I personally find CA to be a lot more enjoyable weather and recreation wise. The people of VA are definitely better overall though. I’ll give you that. I always try to host as many of my friends from VA here as possible
My dad lived in Palmyra, VA for over 30 years. Its grown over the years, but it still has the small rural town feel. Just east of Charlottesville. We always loved going down there. Might even end up moving to that general area. Thanks Briggs
It's been taken over by New Yorkers now which explains the transition in Flivanna
It definitely does. Im from there and i knew just about everyone in my high school back then😂
I moved to the Appalachians with no broad band and I have more time, less anxiety, sleep 8 or 9 hours a night without waking up at 3 am most of the time. I feel like I have m life back.
Also, I’ve realized how delusional people have gotten regardless of politics, its the ideology that is delusional.
Exactly why I prefer to stay home 9 times out of 10. Still have internet, though.
Love my home state Va. I'm from Danville, Va. I know it has a bad rap but its being revive and restore by the people. It has great historic homes, history, Train Station a river that runs threw it and much more. I love what they done to the downtown area and the old historic homes. Its awesome!! Thanks for sharing.
The owner states clearly:
"Mam, I'm not the one who needs that hose but I do have it, the price on the box is clear, it's 5PM on a Friday and my friends and have already drank enough that we don't care if you buy it or not....so, since it's after 5, if you want that hose you better make up your mind quickly..."
She did buy the hose. She did express her dissatisfaction and if she didn't leave a review I'd be shocked.
Omg thank you for this story😂
How about that I'm from Lynchburg as well ( Timberlake area).
Floyd Fest is awesome and the people that set the festival up and such great people.
Nice!
Most of America is rural (97%). Most of America doesn't have internet, or has limited access. Also, $350,000 to $450,000 is for the wealthy, not the average American.
Yeah, I feel like these videos are for people from the coastal cities.
350,000 is not for the wealthy.
@@72cut87 XD If you believe that, then you're one of the wealthy. Most people can afford ~ $100-150K, max.
@@72cut87 350k is a lot outside the coastal cities. Not everything is equal. 350k gets you a very nice house in Kentucky and a shack in Seattle
They have a yoga jam there too.
But it’s a shithole
Shhhhhh.
And the country store Friday night jamboree 😊.
Strasburg is 1.5 hours from DC if it is 3 am on a weekday. The reality is Strasburg is about 2.5 + hours because of DC traffic
I 66 has been improved and they have decreased traffic by about 30%. I live I. Falls Church, my son lives in Mt Jackson. I can get on the new express lanes and make it there in 90 minutes. Huge improvement. Looking to move to Shenandoah Valley to retire. Winchester has a great hospital because Shenandoah University is a nursing college
I live in Coeburn and was surprised you didn't mention the Guest River Gorge. Beautiful rails to trails level hike and bike trail. It's only 5.3 miles but a gorgeous, scenic trail. Breathtaking vistas all along the river.
I can't wait for Michigan, a lot of small towns here have charm, especially up north of and some port towns off on the Great Lakes
Lived in Michigan and even ventured over to swim in lake Ontario for my last Great Lakes swim anyways love Michigan beautiful country but too cold
Lower cost of living in southern towns
Please don't tell anyone. I love it here.

Can I ask peoples opinions on if there's any "friendlier" communities in VA?
Tazewell, VA has one thing that can't be beat, a road named Back of the Dragon. It's 31 miles long with over 400 turns and a big elevation change, my old Honda Hurricane and I loved it!!!!
Sounds fun!!
Yea I took a detour by accident and ended up on it at night. No fun!
Tazewell is a good little place, but I really heavily prefer nearby Pulaski! Has a lot more stuff but the same feel, and you can still drive to Tazewell easily.
@@TimBitten I live In Pulaski and it’s fine but I feel like wytheville deserves a spot on the list more
Just a suggestion maybe you can do lake towns around Virginia! Mention Smithmountain lake too. Close to Roanoke Virginia! Its beautiful 🤩
Just moved to Floyd from Maryland. I've never been happier. It feels good to be out of the DC bubble. Oh, I live way out in country and have 1G internet.
Love Floyd 👍😊.
I live in Mount Jackson on the other side of the Mountain. Was just through Luray the other day for a birthday party.
Just found your channel and really enjoying it! Virginia is my home state and I was a little disappointed when you said you couldn't fine 10 great little towns but, growing up in Amherst you finished strong! LOL! You have such a great voice and delivery! Cheers!
Love from Redmond, OR, neighbor ❤. Thx for all you do! Love your videos
Briggs, I wish 1990 was 22 years ago! Lol. I was born in 95 and will be 30 before I know it. Great video as always!
Lol. I noticed that as well. I guess he was using West Virginia math.
Wow...I was surprised to see Amherst on the list but I totally agree it's a great place to live. That's where my mom is from and I've often thought about how it would be to live there!
Love living a few miles outside of Amherst. Mountain views are beautiful. Lots of places to visit nearby.
Chessie and Peake.
I love the weather & air quality in Virginia
Parents live in Lynchburg... I live in upper Michigan. Virginia as a whole is a beautiful state and they have some great schools and obviously a lot of history
Lived in Stuarts Draft VA for 17 years. Good internet and not far from Staunton and Charlottesville. Just a short ten minute drive to the blueridge pky. Could have definitely made this list.
Yes I agree. My sister used to live there but in Crimora now.

Can’t stand the cops sitting there right on the bridge coming into town where it drops from 55 to 25
I live in Amherst County. Beautiful place. Everyone pretty much drives to Lynchburg for anything special they need. Lynchburg gets good rankings for a mid size city too.
we moved from Florida to Charlottesville (about 15 miles from Charlottesville) on 6 acres. love it! it has seasons, farms & mountains.
It’s interesting you mentioned Amherst, north of Lynchburg. Many towns in that area like Concord are fairly nice. I am in the process of buying a second home in Appomattox, population 2046, 25 minutes to Lynchburg or Farmville.
I just moved to Concord, six months ago, after living my entire fifty years in NJ. Best decision I ever made 😊

It really is a beautiful area, there's woods all around me 😊 I don't ever want to live anywhere else. Good luck with your house hunting! 😊
Went on summer vacation to Cape Charles back in 2020 and it was beautiful. Really lovely town.
You should have included Madison, VA. Great small town with good internet. 40 minutes outside of Charlottesville and 15 minutes from Culpepper. Also right near 29, so easy access to the highway.
Don't give up privilege info!
I’m thinking of moving to Barboursville.
Not really theres tons if farmland in the south central part of the state
Love the video. I purchased a home close to Amherst in Appomattox and it is very similar to many of the towns on your list. I highly recommend it.
I really like this series. It is gonna be rough when you do Mississippi. They got 2. Maybe.
Each time Briggs posts I’m hoping to see great rural towns in Washington state 😂😫 loved this video!!
I grew up in Amherst County. It is a wonderful and beautiful place to live. I now live in Lynchburg, but I have fond memories of Amherst.
Completely agree!
Yay! Virginia! I went to high-school there and they are in our top 3 states we are considering moving to in the next 3 months.
Thank you so much for doing VA!
Thank you for watching
We have Starlink in rural VA. Works great!
Enjoy your videos, very informative. Virginia is a beautiful place to live of course I’m partial because I grew up there. “Virginia is for Lovers”, is the state tourism slogan. You will see LOVE signs all over parts of Virginia especially along the eastern shore.
Richmond has numerous parks and riverfront areas for those who live there. Excellent quality.
Thank you sir for all the great content, this one was good
I grew up in NOVA and went to school at UVA. I’ve lived in several states and cities since school and still yearn to return to Virginia. I’m on the coast of FL now and want to retire back in VA - certainly not NOVA but west/southwest
Native Abingdonian here! it's really nice if you're looking for a small town. It has everything you could want
Thank you for doing great rural towns in virgina like i requeseted
VA is definitely a nice state, lived there quite a long time.
I live in Abingdon and it’s a great place to live, and a beautiful area. I was surprised to see my home in your video as you photographed houses in Valley St in our historic district. I have enjoyed your videos, lots of interesting information.
Briggs kills me with his "250,000" cheap houses.
I love Salem Virginia, it always looks like 🍁 autumn there, October celebrations are so pretty there
Got to remember that steam railroads needed to have a water/coal stop about every 100 miles... So the towns/places that got picked won the lottery back then
Really solid choices! Really liked this video.
Thank you for wonderful video!
Glad you liked it!
Best thing about Floyd is it’s the home of Red Rooster Coffee!
Grew up in Roanoke County now live in a much more rural area in King William County about 30 minutes from Richmond. Great video
Wish you had included more about walkability and density in your analysis. As folks get older, it's unrealistic to expect them to be able to drive everywhere. Living in a more dense but still rural community with lots of public transportation options is potentially a great option for someone who is looking to grow old somewhere.
Please go on somewhere with your bullshit. Never fucking satisfied.
@@ANONM60D Older people in general are much safer drivers than people under 25.

I am now living in LAX, and I am thinking of moving to Virginia for my retirement. Please advise and hope to see your reply.
I live in VB and this list is a lifesavor. I've been wanting to move forever
Praying you do one for Vermont soon, these are super helpful!!
You missed most of the best rural towns in VA. And I’m ok with that.

I mean hell, leesburg was a rural small down up until the 80s
I was thinking about Staunton as well. The American Shakespeare Theater is a real gem.
Moved to Virginia 5 yrs ago. Love Virginia and our small towns. We live in a small town in central Virginia founded in 1744. Many buildings downtown predate the Civil War.
