- How to install an engine oil pressure gauge sender on a Land Rover Defender 200TDI using a brass 1/8NPT T-piece. Installing a sender to run a oil pressure gauge is a simple 5 minute job. For my 200tdi Defender I used a 1/8th NPT sender and T-piece to match the Land Rover low oil pressure warning light switch thread. You will need to check your specific vehicle for the correct thread type and size.

Well worth having a gauge, those low oil warning lights come on at stupidly low pressure. Nice and simple install.
The gauge saved me once before after I started the car with very low oil level. Gauge showed a problem so stopped to investigate within a minute of starting. Worth it.
Is there any way to get the original warning signal to light up at a different pressure ?
It may be possible to buy aftermarket low pressure switches set to a different pressure rate. Any sensor the same thread size would likely work.
I am honestly surprised a oil pressure gauge isn't fitted as standard, those warning lights were absolute bare minimum on cars of the 1980's
I think my 1993 Defender had them as an optional extra along with oil temp gauge. Doubt there'd be many with them fitted though. Plus the more modern vehicles are loaded with sensors and ECU engine shutdown modes making an old gauge obsolete.
Would you recommend this for all defenders ? Is there any difference in the behavior of the stock oil pressure light ? (E.g. 2015 defender being maybe more reliable than a 2000 model ?)
Not sure if Land Rover ever changed much but from TD5 onwards you have a ECU running things.. maybe it's more reliable with all the extra sensors monitoring the engine. An oil pressure gauge can be a useful thing to have when things go wrong. An oil temperature gauge would be more useful though.
hi Brett, perhaps a silly one, but are the sender units made for a specific gauge brand, or did you just look at the pressure range and the thread size when selecting a sender?
Senders and gauges are generally a matched pair by Ohm rating. Best to buy the two from the same company, but you can match different brands as long as the ohm rating is the same. Otherwise, the gauge will display the incorrect reading.

I have a 2.5 NA Land Rover diesel and need the adaptor to make the install of the Oil Pressure gauge. Where can I get one?
i bought mine off ebay. Though i've been told you can buy a different sender that has the pressure sensor switch built in so you don't require the adapter.

yes, just put the temp gauge in the sump. May be a plug already there for you.
So I would be able to take out my stock one add this adapter to in theory make it possible to take other readings suck as temp, pressure,
you could possibly do it that way but you won't have the low oil pressure warning light on your dash, so unless you check your gauges regularly not ideal.. plus oil temp should be read from the sump for accuracy, not from the oil filter. May be a thread in your sump already for an oil temp sensor, otherwise you'll have to have one brazed in.
You will find it will snap off, the first corrugated road you drive on. Use a steel one not brass
My last one survived 30000km on my trip before I snapped it off trying to remove it due to a faulty sender. They seem pretty strong.. though time will tell I guess
Why bother with the "T" when VDO makes a pressure sender that has a low PSI sender warning connection built into it? VDO part 360-009, this will save you from having to use your old warning light sender and the "T"

We have at least 3 of those brass adaptors here, they all look the same & they are all wrong for this job.
The Speco Brand 1/8bsp x 1/8bsp x 1/8NPT is also the only filling available from my local parts supplier.

Sorry Matthew. I've got no idea anymore. It's kinda a trial and error i guess, or find someone with a thread gauge to tell you the correct thread type, pitch and diameter. Or get a machine shop to machine a custom one to your specs.
