Another installment of the Physio Taping series where I show you how I tape the Acromio-clavicular (AC) joint to help settle it down after acute sprain or injury, inflammation, ligament rupture or painful joint arthritis and weightlifter's shoulder.
The key is to offload the arm / shoulder by anchoring the tape down at the deltoid insertion and pulling tape in 3 different directions, lifting the arm up in the direction of the scapula. The anchoring onto the skin over the scapula will act as the top anchor to help hold the arm up and therefore reduce the downward / gravity load of the arm on the AC joint. Then a posterior and inferior load onto the clavicle will help stabilise and support the joint, helping it stay in a better position and act as ligament 'reinforcement'.
I find this works really well in the acute stages of injury to help the patient deal with pain, and enable them to do their stability exercises more often and hence promote a faster recovery.

I tried this and I found that the bottom edges moved overtime, so I also added a strip around my arm along the bottom edges of the tapes to stop them from moving. It really helps!
Had my grade 3 AC joint separation 3 months ago to the day. Did not get mine taped until day 8! Looked into it too late on day 3 Friday at 445pm and every where was basically closed for the weekend. Was to slow in my mind and in too much pain to think of a physio guy I knew that I could have ripped to his house and got it taped which I later thought of on day 8 and WOW what a difference. His tape job was a bit different than this but this looks awesome and excellent and so secure ( can only imagine how good this would have felt). Everything you said is bang spot on. The surgeon never really mentioned anything regarding getting it taped when i saw her on day 7. I would recommend to whoever has this injury get the joint taped immediately to help with pain and stability! The first week with the grade 3 and some rotator cuff tears was absolutely BRUTAL! More the first two weeks! Around the 2 week mark I had an accident while I was forced to shrug up hard and sudden on my injured slinged arm from being startled in pitch black at night and omg that burning Nerve pain was just BRUTAL! Felt like I landed on my shoulder and smashed it into the ground again and worse from the nerve burning! Lasted about a good hour and continued to feel worse after that like I set it back a week lol Do not let this happen to you if you have this injury!!!!
Hope your shoulder is feeling better and you are doing the rehab work. if you get stuck with exercises to Physiorehab.com and have a look at the shoulder injury program
Thanks so much! 6 Months Jan 26 coming up. Was feeling a lot better and was doing tones of physio exercises until I tweaked it closing a damn door that was stuck preventing it from closing fully while at work a week ago frustrating. I pulled on the door stop to close it fully because there was no door handle on the door and while doing so had my arm dangling in front of me while bent over in a vulnerable position for the shoulder lol so dumb now feels off and tweaked. Felt a light tearing sensation when happened. Not as good as last few months. Lesson learned still long way to go but MASSIVE improvement from the first couple months which was grim and a nightmare! So grateful it is where it is. Pushing exercises and pushups still hurt. Tried a few body weight pull ups 2 weeks ago and did 3 no pain. Now it hurts after tweaking. So will not be doing until subsides. Lat pull downs rows zero pain etc just certain movements. Will check out your page looks awesome for more exercises! Thanks so much for your awesome videos! Cheers!

If only i could tape my own shoulder
Bought myself some good KT tape and used this method. It’s a rock solid among the many methods out there that are too complex and your average Joe can’t follow. Thanks for the video!
👍

Superb explanation and taping job Mate. I just separated my AC joint and am determined I can heal it without surgery. KT Tape, applied correctly helps incredibly well. Thanks for making this video. God Bless you....
I just did mine too mate, it took hospitals 3 weeks to realise it after all scans, what have you done to heal the process and is it going well?
Dang, you must have a grade 5 separation. Mine is a grade 3 which is on the cusp of needling surgery or not. I've mainly been using stretch bands and doing seated rows, anterior--lateral--posterior deltoid raises, and something I call "standing snow angels" with a 5-8 lb dumbells. Stand with feet 6-8 inches apart, then lift your arms laterally and go up until dumbells touch overhead and back down slowly. Last one I do is "around the head', Take one 5-10 lb dumbelll, don't grip the handle, hold the fat part on each end so your palms are facing each other. Then standing lift the dunbelll and make circles around your head. Keep your head still, move weight around head 10-12 in one direction10-12 in the other.
Key tips: go very light and slowly, if you have any acute pain don't do it, over time increase weight and reps. really baby the lateral movements, maybe avoid them at first as it can stress the AC joint. Avoid push ups. Have a positive and strong mind -body connection, like Arnold did. Your body hears everything your mind says. Good luck, be safe, and God bless you my friend.
Thanks for the messages and tips but what makes you think ive done a grade 5 seperation?
Best taping for separated AC joint. In comparison with other taping techniques especially first tape is useful to unload the M. Subscapularis
Thanks !
I tried this for my AC injury but KT had too much flex to unload my shoulder. I had to use leukotape.
Thank you
I don't know what camera shows
It doesn't shows well
Thanks, always wondered what those tapes did for injuries
It reduces swelling by enabling lymph fluid backflow, reduces pain and tension by changing the local fascia pressure and altering pain signal to brain, it also helps with increasing range of movement.
Can I do scapula work while being taped for irritated AC joint?
I have grade 3 dislocated joint now I'm on taping how much time it take to heal
How much time will it take for pain relief? At what frequency we should apply it? I am having pain while bench press and push exercises.
Thanks
I think I've pulled my transverse humeral ligament on my left shoulder. Would this taping provide the necessary support? Thank you
You think or you have been told you have?
@@physiorehab think.. Osteopath hasn't fixed it.. My surf board wrenched my left arm back while it was rest, flat palm down on it, elbow bent at a 90° angle. My whole arm got yanked back and straight up to shoulder height. It been painful ever since.. Going on 6 months now 😬
Hey Tim, how's your bro in law going with his Achilles rehab? Isn't it about time for another update video?
Probably in 2 weeks we will post another
@@physiorehab Thanks Timbo. Looking forward to it mate!

@physiorehab
Tomorrow 10/13/24 will by 10 months since my grade 3 AC separation. When it happened, docs said surgery success is about 50%, so I opted for PT, which I did for about 8 sessions before they said to just continue the learned exercises at home. I did some of them with pain for a little while but really couldn’t stay inactive due to my job.
About a month ago, I started cold laser therapy 2x a week, totaling 6 treatments. The chiropractor suggested KT tape. I used a different method at first but this looks MUCH more stabilizing.
Do you think 10 months later is too late for this method? TY in advance.
You can try the tape but I would say there are healing changes that won’t change the position. You need to strengthen it too. Look out for our AC joint rehab program coming to physiorehab.com
Hi 😊
I got two bad shoulders that won't stay in socket keeps popping out.
arm are getting weak.
Will this tape help me to keep everything in place.
also is it waterproof like you can keep it on in the shower.
how long to I keep the tape on. and how often do I use this tape. week weeks month months ?
this is all new to me.
I don't want any type of surgery no screws no metal ball nothing like that.
I don't want to metal in my body at all.
Thank you 😊

I suggest you look at a decent rehab programs to stabilise your shoulders. Go here: physiorehab.com/rehab-programs-shoulder-injury-surgery-rehab
My displacement is four years old now how much time I need 2 to cover
If patient is giving good response with inferior glide at clavicle , how to do taping to maintain effect
I suggest you watch the End of the video again
That 2 nd grade injury. How many day should I wear this tape?
3 at a time. 2 weeks to get you back strengthening
I injured myself in April its now October. I was diagnosed with a grade 3 AC joint separation. I went to physical therapy however the clavicle is still popping up. Should I use this tapping method and if so will this help settle the joint? I really want to return to Jiu Jitsu but I'm afraid that if I do things will only get worse. Thank you
Grade 3 usually always has a visible change. Try the taping to see if you can stabilise and strengthen better
How are you feeling now with your decision not to have surgery?
Hi, I just found your channel and you have awesome contents. I was recently diagnosed with acl injury and I was going to try taping and rehab exercise. I was wondering how long should I tape before I start your ac rehab exercise? Also how long should I keep taping ?
It al depends on how long, severity and your condition
Good day
Wonderful video.
Regards from Italy
💪
Question is it too late to tape for an AC rupture one month from the time of the injury?
Not too late
After this taping shall I start to play cricket sir?
can this help with inflammation of ac joint
It will help unload to settle it
Ive seperated the joint i think its about a grade 3. Ive got a sling is that enough? Also any exercises i can do to rehabilitate? I was thinking if wearing a backpack with weight to help push it down. The doctor I saw said you cant push it down but here it looks like u can which is great news
Taping helps initially, but you need to work heavily on rehab
Thank you for your video. How often to change the KT tape? Thanks
Every 2-3 days
What kind of Kinesiology Tape did you use? What's the dimension in cm?
Victor Pro K-tape. 50mm width. Look out for our online shop coming in April
what do you think of leukotape for the stabilization of the joint? also, my ac joint injury was a grade 3 about 15 years ago, and probably didn’t heal too well, and now i’m having issues. nothing showed up in the mri, but i’m wondering can taping and stabilization exercises work at this stage or should i opt for surgery?thx. love your content.
I can’t flex my shoulder, after recovery, will I be able to flex my shoulder muscle again?
Flex your shoulder muscle?
Does the tape help reduce the separation or bump size once healed up?
I wouldn’t say so no
@Physio Fitness | Physio REHAB | Tim Keeley then y do u tapping in this vidio?
Trying this for myself. I was just diagnosed with Os Acromiale which pairs nicely with being a paraplegic and requiring the use of my arms for basically everything. My first attempt isn't great but I can tell this will make life tolerable until the inflammation decides to calm.
So far steroid injection and NSAIDs don't do anything but this seems to be giving some good initial results. Will see if it sticks overnight or if a second application done better will do the trick.
Hope that helps!
I prefer hard tape for this injury. Specially in the beginning. Much more stable than kinesiotape
Can i use this method after 3 months injury ?
And if i use this tape at home by my self there is any chance to any side effect amd other problem or not plz reply sir
You can certainly try it may help unload the AC joint If it’s still painful to help you get a Strengthening done. I suggest have a look at our shoulder rehab programs a physiorehab.com to help you through.
How often do you need to replace the tape & can you leave it on in the shower?
Every 3 days and yes it should survive your showers
Hi there… just stumbled across your video!
Would this be suitable for a Grade 3 separation I sustained 4 weeks ago?
- I was taping for the first two weeks with a different technique and have full range back. Physio is happy, I’m just looking to try to reduce the back & neck pain, and if I can reduce the lump size.
Please let me know! Thanks
If it’s ok then I need to do a different taping!
Hey there I had a ac injury 2 months ago I couldn’t move my arm bc it would hurt badly but manage to see someone that helped but Now I have this pain on the ac joint and feel as if my ac bone moves easily when I try to move it, I’m also more concerned seeing my middle collar bone is slight bumpy than the other, I wanted to know it’s bc of my ac injury, bc I tried carrying a long pole at construction and felt as if my ac bone went down I don’t feel pain in the collar bone in the middle but it bothers me looking at it so I wanna know if I need to check that out also, and I need an honest opinion how long does it really take for the ac damage joint/ligament to heal bc I feel likes it’s been a month for me ever since my arm was able to move but the pain is there so how long it takes to completely heal I still feel the pain, but not as bad as before but I worry too much :/ bc I wanna start working out in the future if my goal I wanted to do so badly to become physically and mentally stronger… and do I have to have complete rest? Bc I still work at construction but I don’t try to use my other shoulder ac that I’m injured on but sometimes it bothers me when I move my arm , I do lift my arms ups and all that but I don’t try to do a lot of weight on the injured ac I have
Ac joints can take a long time. Sounds Like you need to follow a regular rehab program to get 100%. Have a look at my programs online physiorehab.com
Im 4 weeks far into my recovery of type II, still hurts though sometimes, so I put my sling back on when it does, would taping in addition to my sling help the recovery process?
Rehab. Have a look at the shoulder rehab programs at physiorehab.com
I went to an orthopedic surgeon today. He said that the cartilage between the a c joint and the collar bone is wearing away so that the bones are rubbing against each other. I have to go for an MRI and then he said probably to remove some of the bone.
Sometimes surgery is indicated if the joint Arthrosis is severe enough that rehab exercises to strengthen and stabilise the area are not enough
as a PT, how would you document this application?
It’s looking like I’m going to need surgery on my shoulder because the acromion and collar bone are rubbing against each other. I’m hurting all the time. Is there anyway I can tape my shoulder till I get surgery
Perhaps try the taping in this video?!
