Taping Education Series No.2: TFCC Wrist Injuries
If you're a Physio or a patient who has or had a TFCC injury - then this is for you. If you still have wrist pain with load bearing, pressing or general lifting after a TFCC injury and the ulnar is sticking up - then this might be a piece to the puzzle. Injuries TFCC are difficult one to get better - and taping certianly helps in the short to medium term in stabilising the wrist and radio-ulnar joint whilst the TFCC heals.

Cheers mate! Im a nurse and me and my colleague had to pull this patient up the bed as she was uncomfortable in her position. We could not put the head of her bed down because she had difficulty in breathing. She was pretty heavy too. We had a slide sheet and i thought that was enough, but I got home and my right wrist started hurting- its been going on for a few weeks now. This strapping technique helped heaps. Going to see my GP to get it checked formally. Thank you again ❤

I just found out after 2.5 months that my wrist pain is actually a TFCC tear and a ulnar fracture I've been taping but without relief until I found your video. It didn't take all the pain away but it definitely helped lessen it a bit. I finally get to see the surgeon next Friday!!!

    Good video.
I sprained my left wrist getting back into lifting after a 3+ year hiatus, and then ramping up a bit too quickly with the likely main culprit being an impromptu clean from the safety racks because I couldn't be bothered to unload the weights ':).
I don't think it's too serious or that I've really torn anything in the literal sense of that word. I think it's more of a ligament "stretch", but the location of the pain and the movements that produce pain fit best within description of TFCC injuries online. Not really any significant swelling, and pain along with stiffness and impaired range of motion primarily comes from rotation of the wrists while supinating or pronating.
I have never taped myself or anyone else before, but following your instructions and especially the parts where you explain why, I can manage to reproduce something close that is helping a lot to give relief and support and make daily activities not feel like I am hindering recovery.
On a side note, I've noticed that practically all my injuries including this one has been on my left side. Over the last decade I've had injuries in my left knee, my left shoulders and now my left wrist. As a kid I also broke my left arm in the same spot right beneath the wrist 3 times. Any thoughts on why it's always the left side?

I've just self taped doing the same anchors after like 20 minutes of trying and pausing your video. It feels 💯 better protection than a simple wrap. I think your video offers the best way to tape a TFCC injury, trust me, i shopped around UA-cam. At the same time hope to be able to work out again. my doctor said it'll take weeks. I also hope my circulation doesn't make my hand go numb with this tape 🤣

So how are you doing with recovery? I just had surgery on my wrist. I tore the ligaments he talked about. The triangular one and had it reconnected damaged 2 others but the surgeon just did some grinding on the other 2. So in total I had 4 damaged ligaments 3 were grinded on and 1 he used stitches to reattach. I'm 1 month into recovery and it's still very sore and in the mornings it's very painful to open and close my hand. Its really useless still after a month. I can hold a cup of coffee but beyond that it's far to painful. No twisting open doors or sliding glass doors. No butt wiping yet. (Dominant hand had surgery) I also now have pain in my palm and thumb going up to my middle finger when I open my hand up all the way! I just wondering how long I'll be in this much pain. I'm afraid to ask for pain meds lol But I've been doing heat and ice and taking aleeve and ibuprofen but they don't work at all. I'm kind of losing my mind.

Great video. I'm going to buy some tape tomorrow! I'm really struggling with my mental health due to the injuru as the gym is my escapism. There was no swelling or bruising when I first injured the wrist and I regained full ROM pretty quickly. Like you say in the vid, flexion or any pressing exercises are still a massive no 18 days after the original injury though. It's extremely painful in those motions. It is still likely to be a minor injury? I've tried a couple of stretches to regain that flexion but still get pain. Should I continue to strap it and wait it out? Huge thanks in advance for any reply.

THANK YOU for this!! I think I did something fairly minor to my TFCC from climbing. After about a week off, I was able to get back to climbing pretty much as normal with this taping - it feels very secure and supportive.
I found that pulling the bone into place and then wrapping the tape around almost onto my palm, instead of my wrist right over the arteries, helped with circulation. (It was fine when I first taped it like this, but engaging/expanding my forearm muscles made it cut painfully into my wrist). Wrapping the ends closer to my palm than wrist seemed to let me pull the bones tightly together and have space to use my arm.
Very very glad I found this. Are certain stretches helpful for TFCC, or is that not going to help something like this?

Hello, I had an accident during sport when I jumped up and back at the same time and landed on my hands to prevent myself falling on my back/head. The doctor diagnosed a scaphoid fracture, which was healed after being in a cast for 2 months. Since the accident I also experience some very annoying popping in that TFCC area which did not disappear during the time in the plaster cast. Now almost 1 year later I am still experiencing the popping in that TFCC area when I rotate my wrist, but it is not really hurting. Do you think your taping could make the popping go away? At the moment I also experience pain in my elbow and shoulder when I use my arm a bit and in my neck area in general, which might have something to do with the popping or the time in the plaster cast, since I did not have any problems like that before.

I have had TFCC surgery on both wrists nearly ten years ago and finally have some time off work to recover. The plan is to splint for a month and then tape for a month all while injecting BPC-157 into those torn ligaments so they will heal. Looking to add to the successful recovery stories. The part about anchoring is a game changer. Taping is more effective than using wrist widgets in my opinion however during physical therapy I wear them while doing wrist rotations with a 5lb weight so I don't get that awful clicking sound. The goal is always strength without pain. Immobilization is the best way to heal a TFCC

I described this exact injury to a physiotherapist via video call. I told her I couldn't bear weight with my wrist bent at 90 degrees. She sent me stretching excercises to do, bending my wrist back which made this WORSE!
I wish I'd ignored her totally. I've now got my wrist in a brace and icing it daily. I'm trying to rest it and restrict wrist movement as much as possible.
Got to have an MRI as the surgeon thinks I may have torn a ligament in the ulna area. I really hope it gets better without surgery.
How long does the taping you did stay on before you start exercises? My ulna bone certainly isn't raised as you describe.

Excellent will try this out ! One question though, I had a fall two months ago and just went a week ago to the doctor, who said that I have TFCC, and some fluid in the DRU joint. So I bought a splint today, which I try to use often as I can, use NSAID, cooling the wrist, and strengten my wrist with some exercises I saw online. But the question is really, can the TFCC still heal on it own without surgery, even though I have been using my weakened wrist (by painting, putting wooden floors). I have pain when I rotate but not flexing. Just wondering if you have had any cases like that

At first it was cutting off my circulation/digging into my tendons when I engaged my forearm muscles, but I found that pulling the bone into place as he does and then wrapping the end of the tape higher up (like over the base of your palm instead of right over the wrist arteries) still let me pull the bones together but let me use it more. I also added a piece of tape wrapped around the middle of my palm and between my thumb/pointer finger because the second piece he does starting on the palm was peeling off once I put any chalk on it. I think my TFCC issue was pretty minor, but this has been working for me to climb a lot!

R distal radius Dx with volar orif here.
    Foosh injury skateboarding.
TFCC was torn severely, and 14 weeks post op, my ulna is still elevated and laterally displaced-to the ulnar side. I guess that would be medially displaced in the anatomical position.
I have adhesive capsulitis. But beyond that it feels like my carpals are sunken relative to both my ulna and radius. There’s a step off that becomes very overt with wrist flex.
Is it too late to tape the ulna given I’m 14 weeks out of the injury. The displacement of the ulna is overt. I should’ve caught it early but because of the swelling and fracture I presumed the displacement would minimize with remodeling. The radius looked exceedingly abnormal, which skewed my landmarks as it is also elevated relative to the carpals. One of those scenarios where so much is wrong it becomes difficult to orient yourself.
While the radius will continue to remodel. I don’t see why my ulna would pop back into place.
Anyway, your videos are greatly appreciated. I’m a PT but haven’t worked on anything distal to the shoulder since PT school. We’ve given up the arm to OTs here. So I am very green when it comes to wrist and hand pathology.
    Thanks

this is a great video! I had acute injury during tennis - I noticed the styloid process of ulna seemed bigger. I have very little problem or pain with weight bearing. It has been 2.5 weeks and I can't see physio for a month or so :( . What is the risk of only resting the area - in other words, if my ligaments have been stretched or a little torn and I can't get someone to help me tape in correct position - will the ligaments heal stretched and will that prevent me from playing tennis again? I have Tfcc issues with both my wrist I am a competitive armwrestler . My left hurt more than my right. I had a doctor perform surgery on my left elbow and wrist. He stated I had a cyst on my wrist about where you stated the ligament or ulnar nerve can pop up. He stated I had a compressed ulnar nerve at my elbow. However the surgery really didnt fix any of my pain at all. I can still lift and somedays my left feels great during competition but lately it is weak and hurts. My right I believe is slightly injured but doesn't prevent me from lifting or anything. I have had the injuries for about 8 months now. I m not able to just rest for months because of my job plus I can't stand the fact of not being active. Need advice ???!! Please anything will help. The pain in my left shoots down my forearm about 4 inches and my right only hurts at the spot where my tfcc is.

I would follow a rehab program for the best pathway and advice. Have a look here www.physiorehab.com/rehab-programs-shoulder-injury-surgery-rehab

This injury is like a lose lose 😂 once it tears it never fully heals so you’re always prone, and surgery puts the hand outta action for 3 to 6 months

Did you need to pass a mri for the doctor to see that your wrist need surgery? My wrist hurt as fuck for the past 2year and my doctor prescribe me some painkiller pill which is clearly not working and they couldnt see nothing on the carpal tunnel test. I had other major health problem more serious then my wrist at the time soo i told the doctor too cancel the appointement for the mri. For a year i almost did not lift with both my hand thinking it was going to recover and it clearly dont.

@@nicholasfournier6348 They will not do surgery without an MRI. If your doctor is not cooperating, find another doctor. Get an MRI and get surgery. 2 years you have chronic inflammation and it won't heal on its own.

It will fully heal it you inject BPC-157, immobilize and use the power of your subconscious mind to heal. Your body and mind have amazing powers. You're just not aware of it because you're only utilizing 10 percent of your brain!

Perhaps that is an overload injury and needs decent rest. If it is not getting better with rehab exercises you need to see a Hand Physio or Physio with experience with hands and wrists
