    I always think matts super loose playing style makes him look less impressive then he actually is. The guys a beast. His kit sound is constantly in the elite levels too

      I think it's the opposite - doing all the shit but making it look effortless as well is the mark of a great drummer.

    • @endornaut
      @endornaut 2 роки тому +10

      @@fl00d69 I believe both of you're right on your own areas. If the listener is getting what he's doing, making it look effortless is mind-blowing but if the listener is not a drummer or perhaps a beginner or something they might be looking more for spectacle. So both works imo.

    • @fl00d69

      @@endornaut Yeah fair cop - I speak as a 'player', and from that perspective, Matt is always impressive.

      @@fl00d69 I believe if you compare Halpern with Matt Gartska for example which is way more groovy, makes some IMPRESSIVE stuff on Animals as Leaders but he makes it look like he isn't doing much it's amazing I think an average non-musician would think Halpern is better because of that spectacle. But we're talking about the .1% of player, the elite of the elite

    • @fl00d69
      @fl00d69 2 роки тому +1

      @@pedrosilvamusician I'm a _huge_ fan of both - but Imo, i think it's quite the opposite.
      I'd say Garstka (spelling!) is the more technically accomplished player by a considerable margin - which for the top .1% is kind of mindblowing! But Garstka I find a lot harder to 'groove' to. Sometimes his phrasing and syncopation is SO fucking out there, you get completely lost trying to follow it. Like the _only_ song I have learned to play myself is 'The Woven Web'. Everything else I just give up 🤣
      By comparison, I reckon Halpern is actually the more groovy player. A bit more accessible. In the context of Periphery anyway.

    You should most certainly listen to them more! This is from Periphery 3, and is a masterpiece. P3 and P4 are my favorites for sure. Both albums are perfect start to finish. One thing I absolutely love about Halpern is the fact that he uses all his cymbals at almost all times haha. I always remember what people say, "if there's a cymbal, it's swinging."

    Matt in my opinion is one of the biggest game-changers in progressive drumming. Nobody really used stacks, mad ghost notes and keeping the pulse on the hi-hat before he came along. The world went from everyone playing like Mike Portnoy to playing like the two Matts

      I agree but I feel like Tomas Haake is the dude that brought that first, people just didn’t discover how amazing Meshuggah was til like 2008. Periphery is like an awesome blend of Dream Theater tech and mesuggah groove. Then that just became Progressive metal. Haake was riding the hi hat over polymetric grooves literally in 96

      @vTxFUSiiONz 2 роки тому

      @@ZediBaptista yeah definitely. Garstka is imo the best drummer in the world currently as I think he ticks the most boxes. But Matt Halpern's groove is super good, got a perfect knack of sitting in the pocket during some very complex guitar pieces, as Periphery are ultimately a band for guitar nerds.
