- Resul Pookutty is an Indian film sound designer, sound editor and audio mixer. He won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing, along with Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp, for Slumdog Millionaire. Pookutty has worked in Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam languages in addition to British films.
Born into a family in Vilakkupara, near Anchal about 40 km from Kollam, Kerala, India. He was the youngest of eight children. He did his Bachelor's degree in Physics. He later joined Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram for studying Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, however, he was unable to complete it. In 1995, he graduated from Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
Pookutty made his debut in sound design with the 1997 film Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One, directed by Rajat Kapoor. He got his big break with the critically acclaimed 2005 film Black, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
He went on to do sound for many big productions like Enthiran, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, English Vinglish, Pushpa, Highway etc. He won the National Award for Best Audiography for Kerala Varma Pazhhassi Raja. He is now stepping into the role of a Director with the Malayalam movie Otta.
In this two-part series, Resul Pookutty traces his life journey from Vilakkuppara near Kollam to the Oscars and not to his role as a director. He talks about what motivates him to do what he does as a sound mixer and editor. He explains various aspects of his job and narrates varied experiences that he has had as a sound editor. he talks about he struggles to make ends meet as he started out on his journey.

Great meaningful interview for common man like me, which gives insight into film making and importance of sound as otherwise normally sound is not paid attention especially in Indian cinema. Mr. Resul Pookutty, a humble personality, many thought provoking answers.
