As a black woman who has had her locs since 2019, I would just cut my hair all off and grow it back. The cosmetologist and certified natural hair specialist in me is screaming make a detangling mix! Water will shrink the hair back if you detangle with it alone. I have removed several of my clients locs in hours, not DAYS, HOURS with a mix that is mostly oil based. It is required to give slip to the hair and aid in detangling.
What's the mix you use, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks for the information. I don’t have locks but after keeping my hair in a protective style for a little too long I also use oils to loose and detangle.
The horse mane and tail detangler works awesome.
As a cosmetologist and certified natural hair specialist would you say that the hair texture of yt people can actually handle having it put in dreads? I feel like they’re more matts then anything.
I used to have locks from 2016 to 2018 100% my hair no extensions, I did it myself and when I took them off with a crochet needle and a comb without anything else, I thought would be harder due to my C4 curls and the humongous amount of hair I have but it was relatively easy and was indeed surprised, I've been wanting to lock them again but at the same time I don't know if I want to spend 3 days locking my hair 🤣🤣 usually breading takes around 8-10 hours
My son had dreads for 8 years, they were down to his waist. He couldn't rest well at night anymore and would wake up with a knot in his neck. I told him to stop dreading the new growth, otherwise I'd have to almost shave his head. 3 months later we cut them off , he felt so much better he said he felt like he was floating. The dreads weighed 8.3 lbs. Great video Brad, love ya 💓
8 pounds that’s insane, must’ve felt soooo good
Wow I'm sure he felt great getting rid of that weight!
Locs can be trimmed. Regular trims and maintenance would have relieved his pain…
@@Desaundreathat's true, he started working as a large engine mechanic, it was too difficult to keep them clean even though he washed them regularly, also they were a safety hazard when working with engines with moving parts. The weight also caused him neck pain. Ty for your comment:))
@@forrestmonarch7577 no problem I understand that as I am on my third round of locs, making this set smaller. Engines and hanging hair definitely don’t mix.
As a African American female and licensed cosmetologist it’s better for ethnic hair with locs to use conditioner to detangle from experience and it helps with the breakage on the ends of the hair ❤❤❤❤ much love brad
I’m white with wavy hair, but once I got really sick for a long time. I couldn’t get out of bed and would often just let water run over me in the shower and lay back in bed with wet hair. I got a huge nasty dreadlock like tangle in the back of my head. All the way to the scalp. The only place willing to even try detangling it instead of shaving it off was a salon for African hair. Even they said it was iffy. A woman from Kenya and an African American woman worked on my hair for 6 hours and managed to actually get it completely out. They weren’t even gonna charge me the whole 6 hrs but obviously I insisted. I couldn’t go back to that salon cause my hair type isn’t their specialty, but I’ll never forget how they refused to give up even when everyone else did.
@@Forevergreencloverthat’s so sweet🫶🫶🫶
👍🏽 I said that up top 😂
@@Forevergreencloverif any one can do your hair it is the Africans they can grip scalp and anyone’s hair. They have some magic hands❤
as a white person with white person hair that always matted up like crazy as a kid until i discovered layers, i agree 😂 i would’ve had to shave my head if not for the conditioner my mom would slather all over my hair
I lost my mom to cancer & after that, I threw my waist long hair up into a bun where it stayed for almost 2 years. I would periodically work through the mats but didn’t really get anywhere. I went to the hair salon where I had 4 hair dressers working on my hair for over 4 hours. They were my saviors! ❤
From a loctician.- THANK YOU, BRAD! "The most meticulous thing you can possibly do in the realm of hair." Was the most validating comment I've heard in my 5 years of work. You made my whole year. 🥰
Conditioning or not conditioning depends on hair type.
That’s so cute! You guys deserve it - yall are real hair Magicians/artists ❤
Girl same! ❤
7:12 sooo beautiful! I understand the hiding behind your hair. I hope you feel confident
I didnt know this could be done!!!
my friend had dreadlocks for a few years and when the time came to get rid of them she just couldn’t do this. i think she unpicked two or three before she just said f it and cut them all off and shaved her head lol. fair play to the people who have the patience for this cos i know i would not!
I was thinking the same thing...shave it all & start fresh, lol! I admire the patience of those who choose to comb them out tho.
As a black girl, my hair breaks easier when theres no form of moisture. What the last girl did was pretty smart, as always different race different hair, different do's and don't for certain things
Edit: some of yall really trying to be smart. No two races have the same hair texture, not even those apart of the same race has the same texture. So yes for the major part race affects how your hair grows, the texture, and the practices you apply to taking care of it, whether it be tradition, culture, or something you learn from wherever else.
Actually all hair types would be easier if they used emollients in their removal. Using water makes it harder.
Using water and conditioner helps as a black girl. Not using water and conditioner is harder.
@@Desaundrea Ya I agree. I tried ditching conditioner and then found a dread loc in my hair over night. Brushed it out multiple times and it kept reforming over one day in the same spot. My hair isn't even curly. It's just wavy.
Mix a little extra virgin olive oil in conditioner I have dry hair it made a big difference my curls came back to life. You can also add some to shampoo too
@@RavenVargas27 I like the olive oil/ conditioner. But no shampoo until the torture is over 😂 Seriously don’t detangle locs with shampoo.
That first transformation was INSANE! I did not expect her hair to look like that afterwards! Kudos to anyone doing this. I would've just shaved my head and grow it out from scratch.
Edit: sorry, I just had to comment on the last girl's hair. That is GORGEOUS!!
I actually had a classmate in college do that. He was a drummer and had chest-length dreads. One day he just came to school and he had chopped it all off! Def looked a lot healthier. We were all in shock haha.
Amen!
We had a black girl in school (in 'hip' terms, I'd call her a main-character) that had weaves with braids (a lot of braids) and she'd regularly spend a lot of money putting new ones in.
We asked her to show her natural hair, which she was a bit hesitant to do, but there's not that much "taboo" (youknow, judgement) on natural hair in my country, so that was not the issue.
She was just a bit unsure, she hadn't done that in a long time, she was afraid it wouldn't look nice.
One day, she wasn't in class. We sat down and were about to start the class. Then, there was a knock on the door. We said; 'Come in!' and the door swept open, but nobody was there.
We all looked and stared at the door, which is when she dramatically put her head around the side and said; 'Hey whatsup?!' and she had her natural hair, with a golden clip and a golden statement necklace and a leather jacket.
She looked like a goddess in modern times. We all screamed and even the teacher was speechless.
I remember how she was striding to her chair like a rockstair, leaned back and said; 'Touch it!' and we touched her hair and screamed at how soft it was.
The whole day, she was surrounded by a group of girls that wanted to look at the teachers reacting to her new hairdo and her outfit.
And later, she started experimenting with her natural hair and started putting clips or glitter-application-thingies in there, I'm not sure, but it looked very cool.
I don't remember all of my classmates and many were awful, but Wendy, was really cool.
@@Widdekuu91 That is such a lovely story! Ngl that put a huge smile on my face just reading that. Wendy sounds awesome!
2 years n that short
Depends on your hair tripe for kinky curly hair conditioner really does help since our hair is naturally more dry and removing it dry it more likely to break it than doing it wet. Plus the conditioner helps loosen up the hair and actually avoids breakage and that’s why it was easier for her to removing the hair
Straight hair is stronger dry, curly hair is stronger wet. Not 100% sure that's scientifically accurate but it sounds right lol
At the very least, wet hair being more pliable helps the curly knots bend out of each other without breaking
@@madeliner1682 all hair is strongest when dry and weakest when wet
@@madeliner1682fully agreed. Dangling curly went wet is faster, earlier and wayyy less breakage if any
@@Angel-xu3ul every place a hair strand changes direction is a weak point and a place where the cuticle lifts and therefore is naturally more porous. This is why curly hair is by default more brittle than straight hair, and why it's a thousand times easier to avoid breakage when the hair bends first when force is applied as opposed to going straight to snapping off at a weak spot. Since curly hair is also very opinionated about where individual strands want to lay, water helps the knot clumps be more open to suggestion on a new arrangement instead of having to literally pull a single strand of hair out of the knot at a time only to end up with a hundred de-knotted hairs that all want to go in contradictory directions and therefore re-knot themselves every fifteen seconds anyway
@@madeliner1682 the last young lady did NOT use water. She used coconut oil with absorbs and continues to soften and loosen her curls. That is why is was easier. Also it looks like she used a latching method to maintain her hair, so removing them is easier for her.
I love Christina Randall!! Her locks removal was a journey for her and her fans, and she does sooo many different cute hairstyles now❤
I never knew she had locks! I just came across her channel this past year. I love her videos!
Christina is so wonderful 🥺
Yessss I adore her! She looked beautiful with and with out locs
@@hannahremillard2471 She used to look COMPLETELY different.. Not just her hair but her whole face lol
Right i watched her transformation! Her friends from jail helped her. I love her, she is amazing!
I JUST finished combing out my locs yesterday morning. It took me about sixteen days. But I didn’t do it consistently each day. It. Was. Mind boggling how much hair came out. But my hair is so thick and healthy. No regrets!
Christina's hair now is so gorgeous and healthy, I love seeing it in her videos after her removal.
Right. And it's so blonde. She's such a beautiful woman!
Me too. I love her channel. Been around since her prison stories lol😂
@@taylorcook7340I literally love her prison stories!
The curls of the first girl are Sooo gorgeous! It suits her perfectly 😨😍
Mr. Brad Mondo, I am always impressed with how respectful you are with your commentary and descriptions. That’s everything! 👏🏽 Whoever raised you raised you right! Your character and spirit is a GIFT!
As a naturally curly girl, I envy everyone who can run their hands through their hair whenever they want. I can only do that when it’s wet, or {I almost never do this} after a couple hours of straightening, but only till it gets wet again ☹️
I just want to say your curls must be pretty, but I do find that people with extra long hair have the same issue. I go to run my fingers through my hair, and they get caught and tangled. If I brush too quickly my hair literally wraps around my brush… 😅
Literallyyyy can never run my fingers through my curly hair 😢
bro i have thick wavy hair and i go through your issues as well 😭🥲 ((gingers only have 90,000 strands on their head but its thicker)) 🥰
My niece who is a hairdresser, is a dreadlock detangler expert. She has the patience of a saint and loves Brad's videos.
FYI…Locs require a DETOX…because yes…like Brad mentioned, it’s like “dirt” “debris” so it’ll accumulate..which will require getting a monthly detox or every two months..it’s definitely preventable if you take proper care.
I had dreads for 5 years. It took me about two months to comb them out. My hair afterwards was past my butt. I chopped it to just below my shoulders. I miss them sometimes. But my neck and back do not lol
Did your neck and back hurt because of the dreads themselves, or was it the case as well with long untangled hair?
@@BDXRDM idk about dreads, but when my hair was that long i definitely had some neck issues cause of the weight, but its only really bad when you´re washing your hair. with the water in its so heavy it pulls my head back lmao
I had mine for 7yrs. Took me and another person 7-8 hrs a day for around 5days to comb them all out 😓
I couldn’t be bothered to comb mine out. I buzzed my head.
My sleep improved.
@@Dragonfly_vbz no! Surprisingly they were super clean on the inside and no stink. I was TERRIFIED they were gonna be bad lol
OMG! I've watched Christina for years! She has several channels but i mainly watch her true crime channel! She had a very rough & tragic childhood, speant years in prison & completely turned her life around! As a former addict myself with 9 years clean, she is an inspiration & one of the most real, down to earth people on UA-cam! She's awesome!
I gasped when I saw her ! She’s amazing ! I been watching her since like 2018 or so 😭
I was shocked for a while when she and her friends took them out!! I watched the whole process back then! It was a change to get used to, but I Love Her So Much!! I love how healthy her hair looks now!
I still want to know where TH is Summer Wells?
Yesss Christina 🎉 love her.
@@thechrononautswife-dorothy me too. This has always been my theory on SW. I think when they got back home, Summer was asleep in the back (like in the milk jug video) so they decided to leave her there until she woke up. But Candace was high & by the time she thought about it, it was too late. Maybe she had been dosed to sleep like what's being said so her body didn't react to wake her up in the hot car. I know it's a different theory than all the ones out there but I feel like it's possible bc it's a simple explanation. What do you think?
I thought she was one a see prison videos from. Made my giggle every time Brand said "locked up" while not knowing her story
I will say that adding water and conditioner is more recommended for black and textured hair. Even finer 3b types will benefit from the slip of the conditioner. the issue of elasticity from water causing snapping may still be a consideration for chemically treated black hair but typically, coarser hair and the tighter curl patterns will break more from going in dry and pulling without any slip to loosen the curls from being joined together so tightly.
I had locks for 7ish years. I had around 80 in my hair. It took me forever and a day to take them out. My husband helped me. I miss them so much, but I don’t regret taking them out.
Edit: this video was super satisfying. They all looked so beautiful with and without the locks.
If you've got dry hair (like me), getting out knots with conditioner really is so much easier. There's specific conditioners that have great "slip", they are absolutely *necessary* for washdays for me. My hair gets tangled if I so much as look at it. Without a good detangling conditioner I'm gonna be detangling for 30 minutes or longer... no thank you! Conditioners with Marshmallow Root Extract are the best.
That last girl's hair was GORGEOUS! I loved the color and style - her whole thing was perfection.
5:12 honestly taking your hair our of a high pony, or a bun, or a french braid. Anything that really keeps your hair in one place for hours, is heavenly. I cannot imagine the pain locks cause in that regard.
The amount of PATIENCE this would take omg my heart goes out to yall

So I just finished combing out my dreads yesterday. They were a MESS before. But I got it done, and it really IS a weight lifted. Literally & figuratively. I feel so much better, and more confident in the way I look now! Love your videos, Brad!!! You’re such a dollface!!
Edit to add: I had mine for 4.5 years & the girl who VOWED to help with my maintenance, screwed me BIGTIME. (Hairdresser friend whom I’ve known for almost 30 years) It was a DISGUSTING mess! But between my mother & myself, we got it all out & I feel awesome!
Christina said the hardest part was the emotions afterwards when her little son (who couldn't remember her without dreads) and her husband commented about how strange she looked but she's looks gorgeous with and without them

I honestly love how you’re more informed about locs than the people that actually have locs! e.g. calling them “locs” instead of calling them “deads!”
I only just found your channel but, coming from a black girl with *locs;* I appreciate you! ❤
hes a professional
Locs are just short for dreadlocks he probably just calling them locs because it’s a shorter version or because he knows some of y’all love to complain
@@thatlilbeach5430 Really? You don’t say? So I don’t know the name of what I have in my head? Why you so much, you’re so fkn smart 🥱🙄
one of my fave react series, the dedication and persistence in the art of locs is admirable
All of them look so pretty. I’m glad they took the time that is needed to remove dreads in order to keep as much of their hair as possible. Many don’t have that kind of patience. They will go ahead and cut it short. But to each it’s own!
OMG YES!! So satisfying! I had dreads down to my belly button. I tried to keep as much of my hair as possible but because I have very fine hair, what I was left with was very damaged. It took over a month. I was gutted. So, off to the salon I went, tail between my legs, and came out of it with a pixie cut. It was the most liberating experience.
My dad spent every day for days removing my sister's dreads meticulously (her hair, not extensions) and he did amazing. Her hair was still intact and looked great.
These transformations are all so wild! Big changes for sure. I've been growing my locks for roughly 15+yrs and have no intention of removing em but this video is very satisfying to watch.
The second girl , who had the locks for five years .. should have done hair baths more often. letting those locs soak in a “bath” of apple cider vinegar + baking soda + warm water, let sit for 30 mins or so it cleans the locks . It helps remove all that dirt and stuff from the hair
Her hair was so umkempt!
Mixing vinegar and baking soda neutralizes both and negates any real effect . Dissolve the sodium bicarbonate and a bit of soap in hot water, throughly saturate and agitate the locs, let the soak to soften and emulsify all the oil, dirt and nonsense stuck in the mats, then rinse very very throughly, then throughly saturate the hair with the acidic solution to neutralize the soap and bicarbonate and rinse very thoroughly again. Chemistry is chemistry, and cleaning something with bubbly water won’t work nearly so well as an alkaline cleaner followed by an acidic rinse.
I believe she was in prison and couldn't get proper treatment for her hair.
@lindagore3307 Yes, she was in prison
If im correct she got them when was in jail and they didn’t have baths so she wasn’t able to wash them as well.
Thank you Brad for referring to them as “locs” and not “dreads.”❤
What’s wrong with calling them dreads?
@@KaiKailuv nothing when they’re on white ppl/ppl with the wrong hair type
@@KaiKailuvi’ve heard it refers to “dreadful” which can be offensive

But that's what they're called. Can't say anything these days
That first girl was like a whole new person when she was done! Beautiful transformation!
OK, the first woman made me tear up. You can tell she had been through some stuff and it literally and metaphorically just came off.
The last girl, OMG, the difference was huge! I like her with dreads. But the end was SOOOO amazing
I’ve always loved when people undo their locs 😍😍😍
I had locs for almost 4 years and combed out about half the length. My hair was also the healthiest it's ever been and the first comb on the scalp.... It was the best feeling EVER.
Brad with women of color we must use water and conditioner to take down locs bc there will be more damage if we try and comb them out while dry.
Watching this as I literally brush my last loc out. I’m in tears and so excited to brush and style my hair❤❤❤
The last lady is particularly gorgeous! She looks soooo soul level happy. 😊
Mold inside the locs is actually very common, it happens when the core of the locs does not dry repeatedly and yes, mold does grow in them especially if they are not super thin.
Christina had them locks for so long. I remember watching her take them out and I was emotional about it. She used to be my favorite UA-camr to watch. She had such a good wash routine on those and she took so much pride in them. However she’s still beautiful and thriving!
Hey Brad! There are loc cleaning videos! Quite satisfying. You should rate those!
Oh yea, washing dreads is a whole thing. First, I wet my dreads, used a residue free shampoo on my scalp, rinsed thoroughly squeezing my dreads like a sponge. I then rinsed with apple cider vinegar. It's been like 13 years since I had dreads, so I'm sure there's better products out now but the cider vinegar was crucial to remove any buildup inside the dreads.
The most important thing is drying your dreads!! As soon as possible! It takes ages for dreads to dry and they need to dry inside. I sat out in the sun and used a hair dryer.
I loved the 2 locks in the front. They all looked great.
I had one big dreadlock and not by choice but because I had bad depression and I just couldn't keep up with it but it took only 48 hours which is really good and I cried because I could finally scratch my scalp and wear my hair down and also putting just a bunch of conditioner in it helps a lot and after I got them out I learned how to care for my curly hair and I've never gone back
christina is soo awesome, been watching her for yeears and when she chose to comb out her dreds is was such a journey.
I've combed out my locs before. I used a spray bottle of water, conditioner and a metal dog comb. It took me 1 full day thank goodness.

The last girl was *ONLY ONE* who kept her lics and scalp *CLEAN!* Also the only who didnt refer to her removed locs as "an animal."
The fact that her locks were all uniform, layed down flat, and were also able to be removed very easily shows which hair type locs are actually meant for.

Wow...the 2nd woman with possible mold in her locs! Yikes! That can happen if you're not cleaning your locs properly and most importantly, not letting them dry completely. Locs take forever to dry and you gotta make sure they're dry inside (use a hair dryer or sit under a dryer) the locs not just feeling dry on the outside. Leaving them damp inside for too long will encourage mold growth and other nasties.
It’s because they are dirty
Dreds are dirty
@@nowirehangers2815 nope, the last girl was clean and kept, white people with straight hair cant wash locs properly or they will undo
hair texture matters, thats why we say locs are not for certain folks. and thats why some folks get mold. its a protective style for the right texture.
for everyone else its grinch finger city.
exactly 😂
The loose ends aka grinch fingers are a choice 😄 I started out with loose ends but by the time I combed them out they were rounded.
*NO!* That girl wasn't properly caring for her hair! She wasn't doing the maintenance. Every so often you have to have a "hair bath" with locs to detox and calrify.
The last girl was the only one who clearly kept her scalp and locs *CLEANA* And the only one who didn't describe the removed hair as "an animal"
Locs are the natural state of all hair fibers that are not prevented from matting together. Literally anything with hair will get mats if the hair isn’t prevented from matting. Locs are guided matting. Hair texture may be relevant for the matting process, but absolutely irrelevant for anything regarding cleanliness or protective styles. If you lox your hair and don’t keep it clean, moisturized and above all dry, you will have buildup, fungus and problems.
Ohhh ma gwad its my girl Christina Randal! Ughh I love her! Im glad you covered her video 💞
I had waist length hair when I got my locs, and when I removed/untangled them a couple years later I was left with shoulder length hair, from the breakage, so to get rid of the uneven and split ends, I ended up going short for the first time in over a decade, and it was a lot of fun. Don't regret having the locs, don't regret removing them. Hair can be fun if you're willing to play with it. Worst case, you shave it off and start over.

Hi @Brad Mondo, I enjoy all of ur videos. I had locks on for 5 years as well, 80 strands to be exact, and it took me 2 weeks to take it down. I saturated each strand with coconut conditioner and it made the process easier it did not hurt my scalp at all
Brad, detangeling those aren't actually that bad. You can easily do it while watching a movie or talking to friends or what not. And in that case it's actually just kind of nice having something to do with your hands! 😁 It might look strenuous but it's just like combing your hair a million times.
Been watching Christina for awhile now; it was a hair journey for sure!
Me to me... never get locks!! I don't think I could be so patient and have the same hair style for years! Props to those who can do this!!
Loved this video Brad ! All of your videos are great. So much fun and your a blast. ❤ All the girls looked great ! Thanks for Christina’s adventure with her hair .. remember it well. 😅
Ahhhhh so happy that you watch casually Christina ! She is one of my favourite creators. !!!!
Love Christina!! She’s hilarious and does amazing true crime videos! Also, she has a whole series about her experience in prison and her childhood
I was wondering why she looked so familiar
Brad looks good with natural shaggy hair. Sometimes less product is better.
I had one dread for 8.5 years and it started as a hair wrap on my naturally curl hair. I cut the wrap extension off and gradually spent an hour unlocking the hair. It was the longest my hair ever saw. To deal with the damage, I did a big chop and no more locs ever. My hair naturally locs up but I do CG and avoid brushes. Dentangler and leave in conditioners are saving my hair, especially after Thyroiditis thinning. Brad, we need Curly/coily X Mondo! We do not want to smell like coconut anymore please!!!!❤
Oh my Godissss this brings back so many DREADful memories lols 🤣 no I joke but for real this took me around 4 weeks to get these out, I don’t regret my decision at all even 3 years later nearly, my natural hairs so long now!! Thank you @BradMondo for your energy and reaction, also the sad music had me cracking up…. like woe is me 🥲 was so jokes to watch, thanks babeee! 😆🙏🏼 and to the other gals too, great work on your removals all of you we’re rocking your new looks, looking beautiful SiSTARS 👏🏼😍
Idk what it is but Brad is looking like a whole SNACK lately
Agreed…he’s a total snack 👍🏻
The mold is from just regular life stuff. You shower to wash your scalp, the dreads get wet, and they're too dense to dry on their own, so they get mildew. I had a friend who bought one of those hot-air caps specifically to use after washing her scalp, and she was able to keep the mold mostly at bay, but it was never truly gone. This was white hair, though, and that's where my experience ends.
I'm loc'd forever. I love this style on ethnic hair textures.
My absolute favorite one was the very last one. Her curls are absolutely beautiful. ❤
IDK if this is weird, but Brad has the most gorgeous neck/chest... ! More open neck sweaters please!
You must feel like a brand new person after finally being able to run your fingers through scalp!
I just love how he speaks to us on the beginning of the video all the time 😭❤️
Love them all! Beautiful transformations!
