Nergal the lead singer doesn’t believe in in a physical satan, He believes more in the philososphy behind satanism. i believe he has like a degree in philosophy. He’s smart dude and def has his reasons for his beliefs,. He’s also just a great dude overall.
@TheFirstNobody Yeah Satanism and devil worshipers are usually mixed up. Don't really know why, but Satanism is a religion based a lot on secular values. So very close to atheism and agnosticism, but these two are no religions.
You seem really confused what all those scenes meant. I really love the song and clip together, because it is conceptually amazing work of briliant mind trying to convey what a man, a father means through characters desribing many aspects of stereotypical father/male personality. In the begining there is character of Prometheus, that is chained and has its guts eaten each day, as punishment for giving humanity gift of fire. This aspect is the hardest to explain, but to me is aspect of self-sacrifice for his children, on day to day basis. Next was Icarus, the explorer and inventor. Do you remember that one-eyed dude in wide hat and with raven ? That description perfectly fits appearance of Odin. Unlike in Marvel movies, in Norse mythology he is personification of wise man with immense knowledge that knows magic, a trickster (card tricks in video) and wanderer (mentioned in lyrics), basically, he likes to travel a lot, be informed about everything (using ravens) and fool people for no higher reason than to show off his mastery in trickstery. Role of woman in the clip is still unknown to me, maybe it is personification of Mother, that worked her magic to get wandering Odin ;) At the end is my favourite part, boy in the middle of something that it probalby manhood initiation ritual, his mother laying him last time before her son becomes a man. Here we can see Father assuming role of his son's shaman, a spiritual leader. Moreover, he is becoming leader of whole tribe/family, becoming centerpoint of all that is in his tribe/family, and metaphorical Sun . Hence those are all aspects of man: O father O Satan O Sun Edit: role of the Sun is also meant as "one that brings light", since "enlightened" is metaphor for having substantial knowledge, it assumed father has great wisdom. Also, Satan was most "bright" of the Angels, often dubbed "Light-bringer", or "Morning Star"
I strongly recommend: Be'lakor - smoke of many fires; Gojira - gift of guilt (live at brixton); Behemoth - ora pro nobis lucifer; Mgla - Exercises in Futility I.
Mgła is much more likely to be the best Black metal band for newbies. And it says true to the core of that genre. Definitely check Exercises if futility, and Age of excuse, both of this albums are masterpieces.
I discovered behemoth when they were touring with Slayer back in 2017. After seeing them live, I became a fan. Their style of music is not what I am into. But their musicianship, production and professionalism won me over. When a band is good, it’s good. And even though I still not into that genre, I love behemoth and have seen them life 3 more times after that first night. As a side note: Behemoth has the best merchandise in the business. No one comes close.
04:04 The torture scene is taken from the greek mythology. Prometheus committed a crime. He brought fire to the mortals, us humans. Zeus was enraged for wasting a divine gift like fire to mere peasants. So he fettered him on an caucasian mountain. His punishment was being disembowelled by crows/ravens(?) >I am not entirely sure.< But instead of dying, his organs, the liver to be precise, grew back everyday anew.... Please look up on Wiki: Prometheus Bound ^_^
This is my personal favourite song of their's. They aren't really Satanists for the most part, but they do use Satanic imagery quite often. The lead singer Nergal has talked about it in interviews. Ora Pro Nobis and The Satanist from this same album are both really good as well.
To my knowledge they're closer to luciferianism, if anything legitimately satanic at all; it's a less self-gratifying and more pacifistic relative to laveyan satanism, basically. However, the Behemoth aesthetic and themes harken to Thelema/Crowley, ie. "Hollywood satanism".
There's some kinda Twin Peaks thing happening in Dublin soon, at The Lighthouse cinema. Maybe they're screening episode 8 of The Return. You going, Drew?
Behemoth is one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Absolutely love them. Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer is amazing and by all means do Solve leading INTO Wolves of Siberia (please do them together as Solve is the intro track into Wolves) they are incredible and I’d love to see them headline at night personally. Cheers man for excellent content as usual
Having seen these lads warm up- nay- start an inferno in the crowd as the opener to Slipknot, its good to see ya check em out, havin missed them that nite, mate. I cant say that I listen to Behemoth in general, but live, I thought they put on a hell of a show. I really enjoyed 'em that nite. I know a coupla chairde of mine who are fans, and have been blown away by their past Dublin gigs, in smaller places like The Academy. If yer into the more extreme, blackened metal, Behemoth are defo one of the most acclaimed, popular in recent years. With Slipknots more frenzied fury being some of the heaviest stuff you've been listening to and reacting to over the months, someting like this is a bigger jump up- so fair play to ya lad for a cool first listen assessment. Interestingly, yer man on vocals- Nergal- has a totally different other band that concentrate more on deep dark acoustic folk music, in the vein of Johnny Cash and people like Nick Cave. "Me and that Man", they are called. Again, thats one of the great tings about bands like this- is that often they have totally other projects to focus their broad musical tastes onto. that gives the listener and music fan another insight into them as people, musicians.
You really should give Porcupine Tree a listen. Great prog rock band. "Blackest eyes" is heavy af ! "Anesthetize" and "Arriving Somewhere, but not here" are great too, and more famous I think. But they definitely have sme heavy parts !
Check out Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer, Slaves Shall Serve or No Sympathy for Fools for a quicker, more direct version of Behemoth. Mid-Tempo epics aren't generally the best way to jump into a band, although this is a fucking fantastic song.
With everything going on right now, listen to: Bring Back the Plague One Day Closer To The End Of The World Plagueborn The Carbon Stampede by: Cattle Decapitation
Not a huge fan of them myself (and i am from Poland as they are). I was on two concerts of them (not whole as i was late when they supported Slipknot this year. And yeah, i was late on purpose) and in my opinion - live they sound like chaos, i had problem with tracking this two songs i did know and they were playing at this time. This "torture" with guy chained up in mountains looks to me like reference to Greek mythology and Prometheus (who f*cked with Zeus while parting sacrifice, so angry god took away fire from the people so they would have to eat raw meat. So he has stolen fire from gods to bring it back to human race and for that was chained to mountain, had his liver eaten by vultures (or something like this) and regrow every night for eternity (i might have screwed something up, but it was something along this lines).
Prometheus was a titan he also created human kind from clay and stole fire from the god to be a gift for the human. Zeus punished him but having him chained to a mountain and having an eagle eat his liver which regrew over night. He was eventually freed by Heracles(Hercules)
Think you should have gone with barzabel for your first behemoth song. That I’d say is their most accessible song with more cleaner vocals and a pretty bad ass build. Should check that out and maybe blow your trumpets Gabriel
I totally can understand that this stuff can be hard to listen to. Behemoth plays what some call Blackened Death Metal, they basically build their songs like black metal and have the themes but borrow a lot of what people more think of as Death metal techniques, etc. Behemoth songs: Bartzabel (A slower song) Other bands that fall in the same category or nearby might be: Dark Fortress Akercocke: (A progressive Blackened Death Metal band that is also actual Satanists, but more along the line of Atheists with an ideology) Anaal Nathrakh: (They mix in grindcore and industrial stuff and go well beyond what many handle well) Rotting Christ: A Greek Black metal band with a style you will hear and recognize and they are more "Chanty" than most black metal. Also when Greek is growled you would probably be forgiven if you thought it sounded Orkish.
Nergal and the rest of Behemoth are not Theistic Satanist ( Believe in a Literal Satan as a God, such as bands like Coven and Waitan), they are Atheists/ Humanists Satanists much like the Satanic Temple (Worships the "Satan" in us) Granted alot of their songs such this one and Bartzabel, are based off real Theistic Satanism, Left Hand Path (Brotherhood of Satan) and Thelma rituals. The main part of this song is based off the ritual called Liber Samekh, for the Attainment of the Knowledge and Conversation of his Holy Guardian Angel, while the ritual that is show in the video is a Thelema/ Satanic ritual that expunges the mind and body of indoctrination/ safeguards the mind of indoctrination. I will leave a link to the ritual that i mention first and the songs lyrics are taken for for those who interested in Behemoth's ideas and songs meaning as having knowledge in Dark Occultism and Magicak will help in understanding Behemoth's songs. Nergal legal problems have been throw in Polish court but they stem from him ripping up a Holy Bible on Stage and the band's eagle symbol due to the Polish government thought he stole their national symbol of Poland. www.sacred-texts.com/oto/lib813.htm

The singer got in trouble for ripping up a Bible in his home country and has been on trial repeatedly, and was eventually banned from performing in the same place despite disputing free speech laws.

Laveyan Satanists don’t believe in Satan as a deity but Satan is more like a symbol for a set of values that they believe.
