I was there in 2002 with chickenskin all over. Joe was a genius. His melody's and harmonics will never be forgetten. Joe was all my inspiration to go to the conservatorium and study music. His bell/choir synth sound is unique of its own. I will miss him so much. R.I.P Joe
Joe Zawinul was one of my helo of my life. His music nocked out my heart, and impressed the beauty and the passion of the music into my heart. I enjoyed his music through his musical beat and wave. I learned the importance of seeking something around my life from his music. Thank you for your music! Eternal music! Good by, Joe.
If languages did not exist we could communicate as effectively with music. It is amazing how music can unite people from disparate cultures. In that regard, Zawinul was a fluid multil-linguist . His art will remain a testament to sublime communication.
I saw Paco with his own band yesterday night on a boat in Paris, playing in front of a 50 people crowd(!)...it was maybe the 10th time in 15 years I was witnessing his genius & I was thinking there's no way to get used to it...Words cannot express how it feels to see him performing live. 8)
Incroyable! Joe went on the record saying that Paco was "The greatest drummer I played with anywhere, anytime". Thanks for posting this masterpiece.........
The thing in here is that, between 3:44 to 4:00 mins, ....well there is nothing I can do every time I get into that final section, but I always break down and a tear rolls down my face. That's the power of Music but and above all, was the power of Zawinul. I really hope and I know it's true, now He will play to the Angels. R.I.P. Joe and God bless you up there. Ermz ;'-(
It would be so easy to overplay on this type of tune, but everyone gives it just the right amount of virtuosity and musicality/taste! It is amazing! I think that is owed to Joe's vision and leadership.
West African musical instrument consisting of a resonating box with tuned strips of wood or metal attached to it that are plucked using the thumbs. Called "zanza" , "thumb piano", "marimbula", "box lamellaphone".

Every Zawinul show is so smokin and each note so articulated, even when it's mellow.

@Fjord76 im sure that since that word is not originally english, it could probably be spelled several ways. I've always just called it Mbira
this little instrument is called Sanza and not Zansa, then they play a tune called Bimoya (Salif Keita sings Bimoya in Zawinul's album "My People")
The genious of Paco Sery
The drummer is Paco Sery From the Ivory Coast
lol, i love the WHOLE THING. lol, the guitarist though, his body language screams "if i have to move from this spot, run."
@DjHypabeam lol. The question and answer scheme in music has been around since ancient times. It's communication.
