The 2023 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid Platinum Is A Massively Improved Large Tundra SUV

  • We finally got a chance to drive the 2023 #ToyotaSequoia for a full week and it is obviously a huge improvement over the previous model which was literally one of the oldest new vehicles on the market. This #SequoiaPlatinum is not quite the fully loaded version, but Toyota really pulled out all the stops for this new large family SUV. The #SequoiaHybrid gets the best MPG of all its rivals that run on gasoline, but with the #Hybrid components, owners will need to sacrifice interior and cargo room versus most rivals.

Happy Friday guys! Sorry for the late post, we are in Nashville right now and spent the day driving the new CR-V! Excited to share our thoughts on redesigned Sequoia, they should be going into production next month and in dealer lots shortly after that. We love how Toyota made it a hybrid, but do you think they should consider making a non-hybrid and a longer version?

What about the families of the engineers and designers you're calling to be fired? Should they suffer just because you don't like the design of a vehicle you aren't forced to purchase? Toyota will sell as many of these as they can build and engineers and designers will be handsomely compensated for their work.

I dont think it’s the engineer and designers fault. It is the market research team that needs to go. It is their job to tell designers and engineers what consumers want. The market research team clearly did not tell the engineers that consumers actually want cargo space and a good 3rd row.

What a great review. You nailed this one. All other reviewers have been focused on all of the upgrades which are pretty standard for vehicles now, and you nailed it with main issues here. This vehicle missed the mark on cargo and 3rd row design. The purpose of a vehicle like this is to have that option of 3rd row seating or massive cargo space, what a disappointment from Toyota. I want to love this new sequoia, I was really close to getting a last generation TRD Pro but the age of the design and lack of techology was too hard to accept. This vehicle improved on all the issues with the old one, but now missed the mark which for me are deal breakers, which is the space, the lack of auto 4x4, and some wonky trim level options (slightly less annoying).
Long story short thanks for a great review, very unbiased and thorough. Appreciated.

But the more I saw and thought about the third row and storage area, the more I realized it’d be a nagging issue that would not resolve itself. GREATEST REVIEW so far! I went to see one today and I somewhat loved it. It stands bigger than it looks on the computer with a lot more tech than my older model. The deal breaker for me was the ridiculously smaller trunk space. The trunk is a lot narrower than the older model both vertically and horizontally due to the slightly oval shape of the upper entry part of the trunk sides as well as the height of the rear seats . I was so disappointed and walked away feeling like it would be a waste to buy it but cant carry regular stuff in my trunk like I've done with the older model.

Good overall review. Since this vehicle is replacing the Land Cruiser in the US it makes sense to have the solid rear axle and locking rear diff. Some will argue auto 4 is more desirable and that makes sense in rainy/snowy areas but from a true off road perspective a live axle with locker would be preferred. For myself who lives in the south of the US I would not want a full time 4WD vehicle. Conversely that live axle plus the battery pack does eat into the cargo space which is a negative for many as well. I think this is a good effort overall but as the reviewer stated perhaps a non hybrid version or extended wheelbase version would be welcome additions in the future.

It's the same concept when people buy the corolla sedan, they expect zoom zoom speed when many don't realise that it's the gas savings that you are buying for. The more gas per gallon saved, the quick acceleration is compromised. So my 2020 Corolla the highway mileage is 38mpg but that also means it's not going to be quick 0-60. Well I have a 2013 Platinum that is as techy as I want, large knobs for radio etc only thing I don’t like is lack of pick up wouldn’t mind another hundred ponies under the hood with more torque, it could never match my old Hyundai mini van that mini was afriggin rocket ship and carry 50% more stuff, to bad the air on broke.

Next time you get to test the 0 to 60 time, try using the Tow /Haul button and place it into Tow mode. This should move the shift points forward and the performance might be interesting. With my 2016 Tundra placing it into Tow mode turned it into a beast with off the line performance!

Gotta remember 3rd is and will always be for kids and occasionally adults when you have too. There will never be a comfortable 3rd for adults without making it longer and looking funny. If 3rd row is your main issues then get a van 🚐. It’ll seat💺 all sizes from tall to short. Lol.

the third row is such a huge disappointment. In today's market, why not have the third row fold flat? You might as well not have it fold down at all. Pretty much useless. I think I'll keep my current gen Sequoia. It may be dated but at least I can fold the third row flat. What Toyota could do is give us a non-hybrid version with a 'actual' fold flat third row seat. As of right now with its current configuration, it is a deal breaker!

Sofyan, the thing I'm seriously bugged about with Toyota, especially on the high trim models, is the NO fully adjustable passenger front seat. An 80K top trim Sequoia has an 8-way driver and 4-way passenger. So basically, the guy/gal riding shotgun gets a flat seat with little or no adjustment. That stinks at that price point! Tell Toyota to knock that off! (Btw) Great review as always, your reviews are so informative! Thank You

Yeah Toyota is NOT about passenger anything..my 07 Tahoe had electronic everything. My xle RAv4 is just a Reggie passenger seat...i really don't get it
