@@Arturo-sm1tb If he did, it was after years of Fosse spewed venom at him. He didn’t spit on him after the play. That’s a huge lie. Pete asked him to go on ball signings with him all the time. They spent the evening together the night before the all star game. Fosse was a huge baby.

Notice they had not a single word to say about the play itself. The runner has a right to the plate. Fosse completely blocked the base path. Rose tried to reach around him to get to the plate, but the runner is out if he runs outside the base path. So Pete was left with no choice. Collisions at the plate are not uncommon though MLB has tried to reduce them. They are part of the game. It's why catchers so often leave the base path clear and use a "sweep tag" when the ball arrives.

Rose asserted that he was simply trying to win the game and that Fosse - who had moved a few feet up the third-base line to receive the throw from Amos Otis was blocking the plate; but Rose was widely criticized for over-aggressive play in an exhibition game.
Fosse went on to play 42 games in the second half of the season, hitting .297 and winning the American League Gold Glove Award.

Just saying here...................for those saying it was "only an All-Star game". Yeah alright, maybe Pete didn't need to barrel into Fosse, but then why was Fosse blocking the plate in a so-called exhibition game? You can't have it both ways people. Either it was a nothing game and Rose AND Fosse were wrong or it was a game that matter and Rose AND Fosse were doing their jobs. Fosse played 3 full seasons after this in 1970 and won two World Series. He played another 6 years after that of partial seasons. In 1971 Fosse was an all-star again and had 134 hits and batted .276. There is this myth that Fosse never played again after the hit, this isn't true. He still had some good years after this.

Fosse blocked the plate - he did his job. I guess Rose was suppose to just quit, stand up and say "you got me - way to block the plate"?. I was an A's game back then and didn't like what Pete did but I was just a teen then. After hearing Pete, I believe him that he didn't intend to injure Pete. Pete also made his points that back in the day, those All Star games were life and death and taken very seriously by both leagues.
Also Pete is correct when he says that Fosse was 5 feet up the line and blocking the plate without the ball which is illegal.
So I agree with Pete, what was he supposed to do, just slide into an out and never reach the plate?
If he at least had the ball already, maybe Pete just gives him a little bump and takes the out, although the hard nosed way that Pete played back then, I'm not even sure of this, he may have tried to knock the ball out from his glove.

Amazing. But Ray Fosse never whines or complains about Rose bowling him over in the 1970 ASG. Duane Kuiper is a real piece of work, too - classless. Rose became more negative about it over the years as Fosse didn't let it go. Look at how both the N.L. and the A.L. played the ASG back then, especially the National League - they played to win the game. IF Fosse had not been blocking the plate, he wouldn't have a story there.

I wish that Mr. Fosse, his many fans, and that lame broadcaster who was obviously kissing up to boost his little career would’ve realized before his death that while it may not have been fair, thats life. and not everybody in life wins an All-Star game. or makes it to the Hall of Fame in spite of statistically deserving it. Our Cleveland catcher Ray Dempsey got run over by Bo Jackson back in 1987. His career ended. That is seldom mentioned. I've watched baseball since the 60s. Catchers who block the plate without the ball get run over. Fosse could have left him enough plate to slide in & swipe tagged him when the ball arrived. Rose would have been safe since the throw was not in time.

Fosse is well remembered by Oakland and Cleveland fans, not to mention the teams that were dominated by Oakland during the A's dynasty of the early-mid 70s. Fosse played a key role in Oakland during those years. As for either of the two players being classless, it's been Rose all along, not Fosse. Ray Fosse never complained or made any derogatory comments about Rose or the play. Rose made rude, and quite frankly, weird statements over the years about the play. What you see in this video is pretty tame compared to what Rose has said. Rose was a great baseball player, but he's also a jackass. Even Johnny Bench agrees with that.
