      ThePowerStacks if I'm not mistaken until Manfred became commissioner, the Reds were not even permitted to officially retire his number or induct him into their own Hall of Fame. (They unofficially didn't issue his number 14 except briefly to his son when he had the stint in the majors, but were barred from officially recognizing him in that way.) I think Manfred eased some of those restrictions but stopped short of actually reinstating Rose. Though he did, at the same time as he officially denied Rose's reinstatement request, also suggest that he believes the Hall of Fame is a separate question and implied that he doesn't necessarily agree that the Hall shouldn't be able to at least put him on the ballot. But that's actually a decision over which the Hall of Fame has its own discretion.

    MLB trotted him out during the 2015 All-Star Game as one of the four greatest Reds of all time. If he's banned from baseball, then ban him from *everything* baseball. Mark McGwire was subpoenaed to testify in 2005, but didn't admit to using steroids until 2010. McGwire's working in baseball. Rose initially denied gambling in 1989, but, in 2004, he admitted to gambling only during his time as a manager. Just like he said, the stadium is on a *street named after him* and he's not welcome there. I can respect his position regarding the Hall of Fame, even though I don't agree with it.
    I would have never considered myself a Pete Rose fan, but, while he was a player, I respected the hell out of his competitiveness and his accomplishments during a time when players weren't getting the mega-million-dollar contracts players get today. Cobb retired in 1928 after playing 23 seasons. Rose broke Cobb's record in 1985--the record stood for 57 years--and he did it in his 22nd season, one year sooner. One of the many reasons I'm no longer a baseball fan today...

    • @ryanaltfillisch7155
      @ryanaltfillisch7155 5 років тому

      Rose may have broken the record in one less season (although your numbers are off as Cobb played 24 seasons and Rose broke the record in his 23rd season), but Rose broke the record in his 3,476th career game and his 15,550th career plate appearance (if going by the official MLB record; if going by the record everyone but MLB goes by you can knock 2 games and 9 plate appearances off that total). Cobb played in just 3,034 career games and had just 13,099 career plate appearances, so Rose did not accomplish the feat sooner than Cobb.

      Total BS. Yez he gambled, was he wrong to do that yes. Have you ever made a poor choice in life? Show me a human being who HASENT and I'll jump tl the moon for you. Unless those mistakes hurt someone else or someone else's property then why are you making a big deal outnof him gambling. As much as he loves baseball, loves his team and players and fans. Do you really think he would bet against his team and mess up a game on purpose over some money? He was already rich.. he made a mistake. He deserves to be in the hall of fame while he is living. You got roid heads and cheaters in there but Pete gambled so he is shunned? Get real. Do you know how much food it woukd do fkr the game and how much excitement and media stir it would bring if Pete was allowed to manage a major league team? Ppl need to get off their high horse and stop condemning the man. Over GAMBLING. This is so stupid it's unreal he's paid the price and it sets a precedent already to anyone thinking about doing that again.. right is right and wrong is wrong. Opinions though are like ass holes. . How does anyone love baseball and not support rose for the hall of fame? Even if you disliked the man's lifestyle and all his whoring around when married and everything else. That's between him and God and has nothing to do with his baseball accomplishments and by the way all those records. He didn't need ROIDS. For like the cheaters do

      Gamblers usually owe money to really nasty people. Rose gambled big money. When he was in a nasty hole, I'm sure Rose figured betting on his own team (an outcome he could easily manipulate, especially as coach) was a great way to make sure he didn't get his legs broken. Rose broke baseball's most sacred rule: No Gambling. Bye, Pete.

      @@robertlosasso4222 It is the constant lying that hurt Rose. First he lied about gambling at all. Then admitted gambling on baseball but not the Reds. Then bet on them to win as a manager. He is an addict and no way to know how long he was gambling on baseball. Add in the fact he had questionable associates. People associated with organized crime. Baseball did not want to have another situation where baseball was in control of organized crime or the mob. The mob at this point was still around. Throw in fact that he cannot remember if girl he slept with was legal age. Even tho imo 16 is still too young. Throw in fact every deal he has had to potentially get in he has scuttled. One of which would have kept him out of prison, got his gambling debts forgiven, and eventually let him in. The man multiple times had 6 figure gambling debt. Now I do hold MLB to some extent just as culpable. They knew he was a heavy gambler even as far back as when he came in to MLB

      Pete lost big money to gamblers. Gamblers will sell their children to keep going. Did he over-use a closer? Did he rest a closer a few games to load up for a game he thought he could win? Who knows what he did to his lineup as a direct result of gambling.

      Also, I don't think most of the public knows about betting the run lines. One last thing, most ball clubs have a defensive specialist. A guy who comes into a game in the later innings. I'm sure Pete didn't use those guys if he had a chance to win a bet.

    I understand why Pete is upset, but under the terms of his ban, he's not allowed onto the field of play, or in the clubhouse. That's why the Reds have never had him do such things. He's allowed to attend "special events," but taking an active role with an MLB club just simply isn't something he is allowed to do.
    For the record, I'm a Pete Rose fan.

    Well, if he's going to have a pity party about how the Reds treat him he should share all the facts. The Reds have treated him very well. He's in their HOF, they've recognized him in every way they can on the field. His major league ban PREVENTS him from participating in formal activities with the team, such as batting practice or coaching, and the Reds have nothing to do with that. He brought this upon himself as he said, he just needs to tell the complete story. Calling the Reds out for mistreating his is just BS.

    One thing Pete didn't clarify....is it THE REDS who won't allow him on the field or in the clubhouse...or MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL? I'm guessing it's MLB, and that being the case, Pete's anger is misguided. He has no right to be upset with the Reds when they report to MLB and are responsible to MLB for what they do. If MLB won't allow Pete, the Reds can't go against MLB, and Pete knows that.

  • @TX_Lawyer

  • @ryanaltfillisch7155
    @ryanaltfillisch7155 5 років тому +1

    Ok, I've been seeing a lot of nonsense and bullshit spouted in these comments, so let's get some things out of the way so you guys don't sound so ridiculous:
    1. The Reds are not the bad guys in this story. I'm sure they would love to have Rose around the team more whether it's in the broadcast booth or in the minors or helping out during Spring Training, but per MLB rules, they cannot. Rose was placed on MLB's permanently ineligible list, and someone on that list cannot work with any team in any capacity. Period. I'm sure that sucks for him and the team, but Rose only has himself to blame for this.
    2. For those bringing up the steroid users or those that beat their wives, you're comparing apples to oranges. Using steroids and spousal abuse does not carry a lifetime ban as punishment as laid out by the CBA (at least not for a first offense), while gambling on the game while employed by an MLB team or the MLB office itself has had that punishment for almost 100 years. The steroid guys and those that beat their wives cannot legally be kept from working in baseball without MLB putting them on the ineligible list, so while teams can decide not to employ those people, they cannot be barred from employing them like with Rose. Plus, Rose still gambles on the game to this day and is unrepentant about his gambling, so no sane person would ever take him off that list while he's alive.
    3. For those saying "he never bet as a player, so the Hall should let him in as a player", well he did gamble as a player. John Dowd, the lawyer that investigated the gambling charges against Rose in the late 80s, found ample evidence that Rose gambled on games during the 1985 and 1986 season, which he was a player-manager at the time (he broke the hit record in 1985). Plus, in 1991, the HOF voted to implement a rule in it's bylaws that states anyone on the permanently ineligible list cannot be voted into the HOF (they had an unofficial rule prior to that but made it official in 1991). So even if he did just gamble while as a manager, he still would have made it on that list and not been able to be voted in.
    4. Another common statement is "he never bet on his team to lose, so he didn't actually cheat". Well we only have his word that he never bet against his team and his word is about as trustworthy as an alcoholic stating that he/she will have just one drink. Dowd didn't find any evidence he bet against the Reds, but he believed that Rose did bet against the Reds. However, when Rose accepted his lifetime ban, that stopped any further investigation into his gambling, so we will likely never the full depth of his gambling on the game. Plus, the rule doesn't contain an exception if you only bet for your team. The rule states no gambling, and is something he saw in every clubhouse for 30 years and decided to go against.
    5. Lastly, MLB should not be ashamed how they treated Rose because they didn't bring this upon Rose. The MLB is just following the rules that were set out decades earlier. Rose brought all of this on himself, and deserves no sympathy from fans. Rose bet that he was bigger than the game, and that was a bet he was never going to win.
