Hey Rye this build is coming along nicely, and your perseverance is quite admirable. Can only imagine how a shop/indoor garage would suit you greatly. In due time though, first things first lol. I’ve spent many a project out in the elements and it’s not easy. So to see you plugging away show after show regardless, plus constantly challenging yourself with the unknown is always incredibly commendable. Keep up the great work Rye👏
There will be a time Dukie, when I will have my own little workshop, and I will think back to these times and just chuckle to myself
Whenever you torque up pairs of pinch bolts, always do so in the sequence 1-2-1 because, when you torque the second bolt, it takes some tension off the first and you'll find the first one has slightly loosened and so needs to be retightened.
I will double check them now thanks
You don't put copper grease on bearings.
Grease is grease no?
@BikesofRye no it's anti seize grease. It's not for moving parts.
@@slipknot5037 nice one this is what it's all about, love to learn something. Will sort this 😁
Yeah, basically copper slip for threads that are likely to sieze (eg pedals into cranks on a bicycle, or exhaust stud nuts on a motorbike). Actual grease for pivot points and bearing surfaces, i.e. moving parts...
Every day is a school day. I love your channel buddy
Loving the rebuild. Currently have two thunderaces (one stunner, and a donor bike for spares), so i feel your pain when it comes to working on a now quite old bike with stiff fasteners seized bolts and brittle body work. As you may know now Fowlers of Bristol do still hold a good selection of various nuts bolts etc, so they are always worth checking for bits. Also.......... Set up tip. whilst you have easy access, a great thing to do to help with the handling and weight of the bike whilst riding the Ace, is to either, push the forks through the top yoles and extra 5-10mm OR swap out the dog bone suspension linkages. It rasies the bank end and changes the steering geometry enough to make it a lot easier to lean into corners, will also show off that awesome new YSS shocker you have just put in.
Really good stuff - thanks and well done ! Surprising how the costs mount up though !
Dont use copper grease on bearings. Yamaha spec lithium soap based grease for swing arm and linkage bearings. I wouldnt leave loads of grease all over the bolt heads, dog bones etc. It only collects dirt and grit and turns it into grinding paste. Not a criticism just passing on stuff ive picked up over the years.
Nice to see you overcoming the problems with the bike and weather/darkness. 💪
Doing my best I guess
Awesome job
I had my Thunderace 6 years from new. I commuted it to london weekly and it ate rear tyres, I experimented with all brands but realized that Bridgestones are about twice as good as the next best which was Avon. Facsinating video geezer. I nearly bought a low mileage one a few years ago but then wondered if I would ever be able to source an Exup 4 into 1 pipe today so dodged it and bought a BMW s1000 r
It looks really good, not at all unusual that you have to redo some parts. It has probably happened to most of us. Really fun to follow your renovations. Kind regards, Jonny from Sweden
When you fit discs to the wheels put all the bolts in and wind them all down until they bottom and then put some load on each one before torquing them up in a diagonal pattern, this way you know the disc is seated correctly on the wheel and reduces the chance of runout
Damn it OK thanks for sharing 👍🏼
This is freaking cool man
Love the vids m8 feel your pain i had the baby version of this bike the thundercat.loved the bike so much sold it at 70,000 miles still going strong but i learnt so much from that bike and the 8 years of ownership was used everyday snow, sun, rain but was just tired. But ignore the hate you doing good 👍 following these vids
Loving this build as ive just restored a thunderace myself. I feel your pain with the engine i had multiple bolts snap. Yours is coming along nicely also love the black frame
Was a little worried about the frame, as it takes away its old school look. But I have a picture in my head of what it could end up looking like and I think it should look great once it's done. Fairing has been sprayed already
Great work. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks mate
just a quick one rye you should be tightening the nuts on them swing arm pivots not the bolt heads or youll get an incorrect torque setting thats the same for everything unless specified
Nice one 👍🏼 - will go back over these and double check!
Copper grease is for bolts etc. Li grease for bearings
I hate to say this but you have to take all the copper grease out or it will work as gringing paste and wreck all the parts
I shall certainly do this!! Thanks for sharing
You could have done the valve clearances before the head went back on the engine
Also when torquing, it’s best to achieve the limit in one sweep rather than taking ‘bites’ at it
You shouldn’t tighten up and torque down all the front end pinch bolts until you’ve had it standing on its wheels and pumped the suspension up and down a few times to straighten everything up.
Wouldn't that force the shocks up through the yokes and then be potentially unbalanced?
@@BikesofRye Not if you tighten up the top yoke pinch bolts and let the lower yoke align itself by pumping then tighten them. You can also leave the steerer nut untightened until you’ve done this.
@@timwaldram5619+1, standard workshop practice👍
Appreciate the work and determination that’s gone into this but still can’t help think that you’d benefit massively from a large Halfords advanced seat and a impact gun
I have a DeWalt impact gun 😁 I am building up my tool set, for sure need more!!
I loved my Thunderace. Always looking for 6th gear tho! Ha ha. I've stripped a Thundercat recently and I'm in the process of building it back up too. (2nd project after my Top Gun GPZ900R.) It'd be great if you followed me back. (I'm in the same boat as you... Hence the name AwTheGears...) 😂👍
Yesssssssssssssss love this
Yes 😎
Hmm well you are coming along man.
Like your style, if in doubt give it a clout 👍
Galfer discs rock. They’re the only discs I have never had warp and that includes Brembo and EBC
I'm wondering about the slack at the shock mount at 4:01 - 4:04 in the video.....? There's a bit of wiggle there. You wouldn't want to leave it like that. Loving the videos!!! Keep up the good work. Thunder Aces are fantastic bikes.
I had the relay arm the incorrect way around... when I am torquing the bolts up you will see it has been swapped around. Great spot mate
It will all be worth it when you press the starter, shove in 1st gear, let the clutch go and twist that throttle 👍
Well I hope so mate 👍🏼 excited to get it finished
@@ballockybill2277 and if it does?
@@ballockybill2277 I can't work out if your comments are positive or negative, at least Bikes of Rye is trying to work on bikes, that's how people learn, so why do you think its going to go bang? Please let us all know :-)
@@ballockybill2277 No I don't know if the engine worked fine before "He fixed it" and neither do you. How do you know he didn't wash the head off camera?
@@ballockybill2277 you're linked to that toxic UA-camr. You will now be blocked from this channel.
Great Progress Ryan, Feels great to start assembling fresh new parts aye ! Good luck with it mate, and remember to have fun. D&Px
Thanks mate!! I try to have fun, but you know sometimes things don't go quite to plan and then I want to scrap the whole thing 🤣 but I prevail and hopefully this bike will be worth it! Cheers 😎
@@BikesofRye Of course it will mate, it's the journey that makes it worth it !
Well done i think your doing great everybody has to learn from there mistakes keep going 👍😀🥰
Yes to this 👏🏼
Copper-slip on bearings is a sure way to destroy them, its not a lubricant but an anti-seize compound.
shaunhardie6077
Thats right Shaun, thd mistake is made all the easier because its wrongly named " copper grease"
I love this channel
Thank you 😊
Great video mate keep it up
Thanks for the motivation mate
Very good 👍 job mate.
Thank you! Cheers!
Coming along nicely. The only words of advice I would give is to stop trying to drill out snapped bolts yourself. It rarely works unless you know the little tricks of how to do it properly.
Yep I have had real bad luck so far but I always want to attempt it to get better and learn from my mistakes
Nice clean work mate well done 👍🏼
Thanks 👍
You’re doing a great job but it’s always worth forum surfing to get hints
mate I feel your pain with stuck studs. I bought an electric gasless mig welder for less than £150 to remove a stuck exhaust header stud on my ccm, dont need to be neat or skilled, and can remove any bolt or stud now with relative ease.
Could you see me sparking up a welder in my living room 🤣
Well done 👍🏻
Thank you 😁
Come on fella. Get this nailed down.
On it
I NEVER vapour blast or any other media based clean anything that has a face exposed to engine internals. There are plenty of good chemical / ultrasonic options these days. It’s impossible to ever clean out residue from media blasting completely. I’ve seen blocked oil ways ,scored bearings, damaged oil pumps, blocked filters. Media blasting is great for chassis parts but I will never use it in any engine.
The fitting of shock is shocking 😱 it needs free movement on the linkage and copper slip isn't correct for that application.
The upper shock bolt twists on a ball joint... feature of the new shock
@@BikesofRyeno, the bolt applies the clamping load, it doesn't act as a bearing surface. It will either have a bearing or bush I'm situ, but neither of them rotate about the bolt.
Frame looks great in black. Im looking forward to the colour you choose for the bodywork.
Mits it be another stealth machine ?
This one I have gone for a more flashy, sophisticated look...Will be two colours...Will reveal soon 😉
Great content. Keep it coming. Where did you purchase the rear shock?
I'm pretty sure he said eBay.
Sourced off eBay
Well done great work be Carefull with the copper grease would love to now what programme u used for the shims if u can help
Going to replace the copper grease mate - I can send you the programme by email if you like. But it's only specific to the Thunderace and R1
Fantastic yes plz keep up the good work bud ur smashing it
@@tigsdudley6694 thank you mate it keeps me motivated to hear this
Chinese wavy discs are pants mate. Give an on/off sensation on the road at junctions.
The Galfer discs I have are manufactured in Spain
Hey mate, what was the shim calculator program. Keep the vids coming really enjoying. Cheers
I don't believe the programme is available for download. It was sent to me by email
to easy thanks mate@@BikesofRye
@@petergj what is your email I will forward the programme over
4:07 bottom shock linkage bearing to frame mount loads of play new bearings or wrong bolt 🤔
Great spot, the relay arm was the incorrect way around, I swapped it before torquing up bolts
@@BikesofRye Ya daft fart easy done it's looking good 👍
Just be csreful with the copper grease.😊
Copper grease on swing arm hmmmmmmm better check that mate. The machine shop should have handed that back, fully cleaned.
Hi think I’m not that far from you can you tell me where you’re getting your powder coating done ?
Full Range Finishing - Letchworth Garden City. I have used them multiple times now their quality is incredible. Mention my channel and they will look after you
Hey man I'd be packing those swingarm bearings with shit loads of grease. While you're at it, do the rear suspension linkage. These are always neglected on road bikes. Have a watch of dirt bike videos, they show the best way to do em.
I'd liked to have had them done but it was £100 to replace these bearings. After a clean up they all felt fine and no unusual play
@@BikesofRyeThat's fair, it's more for longevity sake. Same way you pack steering head bearings with grease you gotta pack these with grease. There's nothing that says that you can put too much grease.
@@MyRandomLife247 for sure and will be going back over these and replacing with the correct grease too
@@BikesofRye Mate keep it up! I reckon you should do an ADV bike next and take it on an adventure!
@@MyRandomLife247 I certainly have these kinda ideas mate don't you worry 😉 😎
Never powder coat. The manufacturers never did. Just blast and repaint otherwise you’ll damage stuff and get crap everywhere
Sometimes we all have to ask for help unfortunately
Did they tap thread it or helocoil it
Helicoil yes that was what was done
@@BikesofRye I would say nothing beats the old tap and diey system but Helicoil is amazing when Done right.. thanks for the awesome content you rock bro
@@doublesidestephustler6094 it was beyond a tap this one, so helicoil saved me on this occasion. Thanks mate 😎
@@BikesofRyesame here i discovered the product for the first time when I tried to loosen my seats sump plug, was a nightmare to get the sump off because the sump plug bolt was in the way of two sump screws, in the end it cost me 350 South African Rand was cheap compared to a new MK4 sump pan that would have cost 5K assuming I could find one 😓
Imagine getting your car totaled by Insurance because of one tiny little bolt 😱 🤣
So I ended up drilling the bolt out completely and helicoiling it on the bottom of the block its been a year since then and hasn't leaked once.
I think its cool that we both building our projects and learning on the way got mad respect for you because when ever I fixed my small bikes I always ended up with a bucket of bolts and had no idea where they went back in to but it still ran and drove without problems I still to this day don't know where the bolts where supposed to go because there was no place to put them but they definitely came out of there was hilarious at the time
Use the correct grease man 🤦 you shouldnt have to beat the shock in either dude.. I get you're learning and that's awesome, if this is going to be your personal bike then fine, but these will be future issues.
From what I have read there shouldn't be any play in the shock in the frame. There is no tolerance?
It's 0.2mm not 0.20mm.
you never use copper grease on bearings what so ever only use it on external bolts exhaust back of brake pads you donj
🏍👍
Yes ✌🏼 😎
you can buy nut extractor and stick one on the head of the broken bolt to get it out
The copper grease 🤭
The bolt likely would have just snapped again due to all the material crushed into the threads
@@BikesofRye it makes for good watching buddy
@@thedriverofallthings thanks 😊
copper paste is not bearing grease
Yes thanks for the comment I have since learnt this 😅
Glad that its you , I hate bikes
I hate them too.....sometimes

If so, you won't be for long doing that in the living room.
😂😂😂
I realise it's going to be used against me for the rest of my life now... Will never hear the end of it 🤣

Stop for crying out loud and get some tuition or read a book. What you are doing is completely backwards and you aren't learning anything this way.
Read a book? Stop talking to me like a child sunshine 🌞 you big meany you.
@BikesofRye let's put it another way, did you get tuition to safely ride a bike before hitting the road, or did you just go for it blindly? Building bikes is just as, if not more dangerous than riding the things. You really need to take into consideration that you are putting people in danger by the poor workmanship you are knocking out. I'm not saying this to have a dig, I'm saying this because it's important and you don't seem to be taking it seriously. Having a UA-cam channel is great and fair play to you, but you wouldn't just go cutting someone up and performing surgery without any knowledge or tuition, so why would you do it any different on a machine that could kill someone if it's not assembled correctly. You're not even reading the manual, which would be the very least you could do.
@@mattblackledge9068 The moral high ground can be taken in every aspect of lifes endeavours. Keep up the superb work policing UA-camrs mate. You must be exhausted doing it on a daily. Truelly commendable
@@BikesofRye you just haven't got the maturity to understand have you? Like I said, I genuinely hope you don't hurt yourself or anyone else. Good day sir.
@@BikesofRyea bloke that had no idea of there been more than one type of grease with each different type of grease only been suitable for different applications.....
Quite frankly, deserves to be spoken to as if they were a child.
After your butchering of the broken cam cap bolt resulted in metal filings been distributed all over top end of the motor. I very much doubt your equally childlike attempt to blow the swarf out and especially out of all of the oil galleries was even remotely close to been successful.
You should be learning basic mechanical skills on an old C90 that will only be thrashed around off road until it breaks again.
Not learning on 150mph plus superbikes!
Just my opinion, but what would a grumpy old biker know?
yet more click bait crap 🤦♂
I have missed you
