I Have KK vs. AA! SET OVER SET! Can I Lay This Down?

- Here's another crazy high stakes hands I played on Poker Night In America over the weekend. This time I've got my 2nd favorite hand with tens of thousands of dollars shoveling into the pot. Unfortunately, my opponent Kyle Julias has my 1st favorite hand, pocket aces. An ace and a king on the flop don't help matters, but the turn card gives me hope, and by the river I think I notice something fishy going on. Can I make one of the sickest laydowns in poker history?

As always, Doug breaks down each street of action. Poker Hands is the show where Doug analyzes live poker hands from tv poker shows such as Poker After Dark, EPT (European Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the Aussie Millions, WPT (World Poker Tour) the Big One For One Drop, and the PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure). He especially enjoys reviewing hands by popular high stakes pros like Viktor "Isildur" Blom, Ike Haxton, Dan Cates (Jungleman), Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Phil Ivey, and OtB_RedBaron.

Doug Polk Poker so glad you've stopped completely giving away the ending in the video title! :-)
title should be "set under set" right?
You are looking good Doug !!!! Keep it up, that fitness thing !!!

Brilliant ending! Props to you for that laugh.
Yeah Doug, one of your best videos. Haha. Sick cooler...
This is gold! Love it!
That ending is one of the reasons this is my favorite channel right now. Just great comedy, wit, and editing. Fucking hilarious.
When the “oh fuck” was heard, it triggered memories of years past, when you contemplate that river shove only to be snap called in record time🤔😂😅🤣😅💯👊🏻
Yup, saw that coming though! :)
hilarioussss ending.
I've never commented on one of your videos before, but that ending was extremely well done. From a former TV guy, you have some editing skills and solid humor. Well done.

Did you actually die, though? Don't fake news me, bro
Sticky bruv stay away from gambling XD You have a TERRIBLE poker face. (joke about twitch ban)
Ima sticky rice fan
It's so clear to me now, if only there was more rake then you wouldn't have been able to play in this highly unprofitable game and wouldn't have gotten stacked!
He didn't get stacked though, he had the guy covered cos that's how Doug rolls.
Could be worse you could lose a bet to not shave for 10 years
Nice barrows gloves.
Jimmybeck14 you can never have too much rake
Doug...great character development. One of the best deliveries of a punchline you've had. Your humor range was balanced well. Props!
ROFLMAO! Once every week or two PLEASE keep doing these kind of comedy-content ending montages when the hand itself it pretty unsurprising. Great stuff!
I'm loving the ending Doug! !
The video editing for the shtick at the end was wicked good.
One of your funniest endings. So good!
You have made learning about poker and poker news really fun for me and my friends you should keep doing more of these videos

thanks! got a lot going on in LA, so have to stay for a while...
LOL love the ending.
Just wanted to thank you for the vids. I've been somewhat successful in local games for the past several years, but always based my strategy more around reads. I've been trying to switch over to more GTO just accented with reads, and it's absolutely absurd how often, especially at lower stakes, even my not-good-at-theory ass can find spots people are just super unbalanced. I find myself not caring about the actual results, and only about trying to make the right decision based off of range.
I found myself at a table with someone I really respect in the game (Blair Hinkle) last night. I ended up bluffing him in 3 of the 4 hands we played, and at least two of them I wouldn't have previously. I just recognized that the board runout was better for my range than his, and acted accordingly. I really feel like my game has improved by leaps and bounds in the past several months since I started following you and can't thank you enough.
Until today, I've seen many Doug vids, without pressing the ol subscribe button. But this one was the tipping point. Brilliant. From Ciarán Hinds in Rome to a caesar salad.....haha.
I think the river was a clear checkyourprivilege. If there's anything we can learn from history, it's that if you don't checkyourprivilege, your Kings will get stacked by Aces.
But seriously Doug, never shove Kings into Aces, your equity is very low
#checkyourprivilege #coconuts
I had trips
I guess hind sight is 20/20. how do you know for sure your opponent holds aces?
LMAO123432 exactly way actions went about never expect aces and Polk actually has great equity and feels he is against ace king or maybe queens but never expect aces
We wuz kingz
Doug Polk haha that was the best ending to a video I have ever fuxking seen LMFAO you are beyond hilarious OMG hahahahahahahahaha
So funny! Been watching you for a few months and this is maybe your best work. Thanks for the content.
Hilarious bro. Thought u made the check at the end. Gotta watch the episode tonight and see everything in action. Loved it

Hey Andrew, perfect clip and love the ending, just loved it. We could smell it a long way you would call, but brilliant sketch. Keep it up bro
The end is just genius
You the man Donger Polk
I admit, this was the funniest video I've ever seen since the Alec Torrelli hero call with JJ... I was literally laughing out loud. Great content man, keep up the good work. You are the best and know how to take defeat with humility, but crush with a smile most of the time!
That was great. The whole video, not just the epic ending. Instantly subbed.
Great Humor, Doug, great humor! :D
i saw you live at choctaw it was so cool seeing you in person!
Hilarious doug. Good to see you reviewing your own hands rather than just other players', adds a nice dimension. Keep it up
Found channel today, spent all day watching videos. This guy's entertaining.
"I couldn't see those chips you are shuffling, just so you know."
Says the lady failing to shuffle her chips.
"UA-cam hates me."
Wonder why.
Question about the river bet: If the action goes to a 5-bet and call preflop, shouldn't you consider that you're only against either AK or AA, especially after the call on the 8KA flop?
If he somehow has JJd or QQd (I really don't see AQ or QJ reaching the river), would those hands really call your jam?
Bottom line is: When jamming on the river you're virtually flipping a coin between him having AK and AA.
13:52 "This is a hand that I'll have to jam." But do you really have to?
I know I'm not a professional poker player(and I don't know if I would have gotten away from it), but all joking aside, I don't see how this is a snap shove.
SVillainG what hands do you think you'd beat here in a showdown by checking river after the hand went 4bet pre and he called your bet on the flop? Doug's range here is also much wider than Julius not only because ; what is Julius calling a 4 bet but not jaming when you're this deep? QQ JJ TT AK sometimes AQ and rarely KK and AA (some most of the time, you're ahead with KK), but also because Doug is a looser player. although Doug's range is small, it's much wider than Julius because his bottom range could be KQsuited, QJsuited and on rarer occasions unconnected Broadway suited hands. The shove here looks bad cuz of the result but jaming here is way better than checking. although you're most likely going to get called only by better or possibly AK, you could make someone fold better hands when you're this deep. better sets and flushes because you hold (potentialy) the nut flush with the K of diamonds. I'm no poker pro either but I see a shove as much more profitable in the longer run ( EV) than checking.
Why not AQ? He could have easily called preflop with AQ or AK and the flop bet by Polk was small in comparison to the pot. So yes AQ and AK is a reasonable guess for what your opponent has. It is very rare someone with Aces will not re-reraise preflop after doug re-raised and he never reraised polks bet on the flop and he never bet turn or river. It was maximum deceptiveness. He played that hand well against doug. He knew doug is not a tight player and that doug might either bluff the river or doug might try to get value from his hand. I will admit, that river check was fairly risky. Ity's not the easiest to put Doug on kings there either based on the play.
Hey bro, I expected your editing/content to get better and this was your best video yet. Really good
haha damn I love this stuff. It is awesome to see how your vids getting better and better. it really is noticeable how much fun it must be for you to produce videos.
serious question: why didn't you bet the turn for value? is it because you thought if you are ahead you only get called two streets anyway?
Me: *sees taylor is down 26,650 to start the hand*
Also Me: *sees she 3-bets with 95 suited*
It all makes sense now.
if he has aces and you have kings, you should fold preflop js...
unlimitedpubes barakz13 the odds of him having aces is extremely low, you don't fold the second best hand in poker because you THINK he has aces lmfao...
The odds of the OP being sarcastic are extremely low. You don't miss the opportunity to look stupid on the internet because you THINK he might be trolling lmfao....

omg i really enjoy your poker channel. just recently found who you really are in the world of poker (guess that have something do to from i am far from the top of poker food chain). but THAT video wow pure fun. good editing
Love these vids, Doug. Keep them flowing!
Vanessa Selbst really played these kings badly this whole hand.
Easy fold pre Doug, I thought you were a pro
yeah go play with Asians
clevertrevorsdad what is NLH? I'm talking about poker here
I always get carried away with kings...
Doug Polk Poker who the fuck doesn’t? Specially with a set of them on the Flop! No pro folds here. NO ONE!
and only a nit or a mindreader checks. be a mind reader lol
I really like the humor in your videos Doug. Good stuff!
by far the funniest thing I've seen all week. Doug you're the best bro. keep up the great work.
@Doug Polk Poker Surely there isn't much value in shipping it when the board bricks there, because you're only getting called by AA and maybe AK. Was this a mathematical consideration? Did you think that since the effective stack size was 10k, you were laying yourself 10k:15k, such that you only need to be good 40% of the time on his calls. But what if he finds a fold with AK there. Have you seen Julius cold-call 4-bets and 5-bets with AQ AK type hands before?
Anyone else have any ideas?
Consumer number 61 do you offer coaching? Maybe I'll switch from Doug to you Bc you seem much more betterer than him.
No I just play a lot of cash games. I'm just wondering why Doug decided to go all in there, because I'm sure he did it for good reason, he just didn't share in the video.
Julius only had ~9k left on the river, and the pot was ~14k. If Polk is sure that Julius doesn't have a flush, then the river shove is fine, because it's impossible to put someone on AA there. (All IMO, of course.)
@Logical I get that, but I think most everyone bets second set in this spot, especially given that Julius completely surrendered the lead in the hand on every street. Given the way Julius played the hand, I'd have a hard time putting him on AA. I'm old-school when it comes to flopping a set; if you don't go broke with it, you probably played it wrong. But if I was really good enough to know what was right here, I'd be in the video, instead of the comments. :-)
@Logical because of doug range, the other guy has to call a little loose so he doesen.t get exploited.
You have to think about doug.s range also when tou make these asumptions.Yeah he has set of kings now...but his range also includes bluffs.
"Oh fuck" lol. Good ending to the episode
Best video yet Doug, great editing in hilarious ending, cracked me up.
HAHAHHAHAAHA, this is the funniest ending to a video I think you have ever put together Doug. LOL
everyone saying the ending was great????? i would have liked to have seen the reactions of everyone else at the table.
all in
- call
oh fuck...
you make my day lol
But why does he put only a couple of chips in when he says all in? Isn't he supposed to shove all of them in?
lol thanks for the upload doug! had me rolling hahaha keep it up

I understand the logic but wow at you checking turn and Kyle checking river...
The ending was too good! By far the best poker youtube page!
quality stuff man, keep it up and btw hashtagking is a bitch
I always forget how nitty people are these days. Easy river jam with KK. Though, as always, I hate your pf 3/4bet sizings @DougPolkPoker
Hahaha, the ending is wonderful, great editing ! Thanks Doug !
Love Doug Polk. He is super knowledgeable and makes you a better player. Thanks for all you do buddy. We appreciate it
You cut to the menu page advertising another video too early in your vids. Lessens the effect of the punchline a bit. Wait until the 'Thank you guys' bit for that page.
You didn't really go into your river thinking and I think you might have made the wrong move, so curious what you think.
Given the large sizing, I think hands like KQ, QJ, and JT suited would almost always fold preflop, so very unlikely your opponent called you with diamonds on the flop and got there on the turn. It could happen, but very unlikely.
If he called with hands like QQ or JJ they are going to fold on the flop, and if somehow they call, they'll definitely fold on the river bet anyway.
Because of this, I think his river range is essentially AA, AK, and AQ suited, since you block KK. To your bet on the river, AQ is an obvious fold. There are three combos of AA and three combos of AK. AA will snap call you, AK probably will call it off since you might be trying to bluff him or push him off a chop, but might make a hero fold. Because of this, I think you should check back against his range since even if he calls it off with AA and AK this is an EV neutral play.
I think if you construct your river range as JJ+, AK, AQs, I would do as follows. Give up and check back JJ and QQ (if you even 5-bet with these, JJ is probably doubtful here). Check back KK for the reasons mentioned above, you're at best getting called by worse 50% of the time. Bet AA for value obviously. Bluff with AQ suited. Check back AK also.
With that being said, you might have thought that he might jam the river himself with AA or AQ. However, I think he needs to check the river with his aces to protect his AK's, otherwise his range is capped and you can jam AA, KK, AK to get him off chops, AQs, and maybe even your whole range (QQ as well).
IMHO, a very good summary! Villain`s range, given the previous action, at the river is too narrow (AA/AK/AQ) to make a value bet profitable.
The only real counter argument I can see is that we often bluff here, with the intention to get said AQ to fold. Then, we have to bet KK for thin value, to balance our bluffs; - otherwise, AQ would indeed become a hero call, as we in this case only have a single combo of AA as value.
However, it is actually rather unlikely that we reach the river with a bluff hand; - maybe JJ (if we even 5bet it pre this deep) with a diamond? And, more so, do we have to be balanced for this random case ?
Bluffing with AQ (QQ is obv even worse) is likely a bad idea, however, as it looks exactly like the hand we are bluffing against. AK likely has to check-herocall, as it blocks both AA and KK.
As a last point, it is not clear at all whether AK/AQ are normally in a 5-bet coldcall range; maybe AKs/AQs. In this case, the only real hand we hope to get value from with KK is AKss.
Zachary Neugut I think it is more likely aces showe preflop so more combos of AK on river. There is no way he can check unless some serious big read.
I agree with that Badbentham. To bet a hand for value, you need over 50% of his range to call you. Assuming he cold-calls the 5-bet and calls the river with AA and every AK then he is calling exactly 50% of the time here, which makes it an exactly neutral value bet. And if any of those assumptions don't hold, i.e., if he is ever folding AKo pre-flop or folding AK on the river, then you can't bet this hand for value.
I think the counter-argument is as you said Raisemaniac maybe Doug discounted AA because AA can jam pre-flop, check-jam flop, jam turn, or jam river, so a lot of AA combos might not be in his river range. On the other hand, AKs can sometimes jam pre-flop as a bluff, AKo should never jam pre-flop (although might fold pre-flop), and post-flop all AK will check-call flop and check down, which means there might be more AK combos that make the river than AA combos. However, some people might call with 100% of their range to a 5-bet with those stack sizes to protect their worse hands and a lot of people were flatting AA and KK pre-flop throughout the sessions.
Side point, I made a mistake in previous comment when I said "Given the large sizing, I think hands like KQ, QJ, and JT suited would almost always fold preflop, so very unlikely your opponent called you with diamonds on the flop and got there on the turn. It could happen, but very unlikely." since he can't have KdQd since Doug has the king of diamonds. Also, because E-Tay was 3-betting light the whole session (wtf is 3-betting 95s against the best player at the table with 2 players left to act), Julius's 4-bet range might be wider which might make his 5-bet call range wider even though Doug is playing GTO and probably isn't expanding his 5-bet range and Doug's 5-bet sizing was huge. However, the only hands that might somehow make the river besides AA, AK, and AQ is a QJ or JT flush anyway, and very unlikely, so really a non-factor in my opinion.
Honestly, I think it isn't crazy to value-bet KK in this spot, just wish Doug expanded upon it more, I really don't think it is so simple because I think Julius could find an AK fold here, and up until the river I actually would expect Julius to play AA like this (I think he might bet the river himself with AA). On the other hand, if I was playing at the 2-5 live tables I typically play, I would definitely value-bet KK since you'd have to be really good to fold AK on the river.
Zachary Neugut I absolutely agree with you, this is exactly what I was thinking. It's a shame Doug didn't actually explain what prompted him to ship it on the river. Maybe Julius was playing pretty loose pre-flop and he felt AK AQ type hands were more likely than AA. And all AK hands would check-call flop and check it down, whereas AA might ship it before the river. Although I still think that objectively it's equally likely Julius reaches river with AA as AK (and mathematically 3 combos of each).
Therefore I guess it comes down to context and hand histories which only Doug (and the others at the table) could clarify for us. Presumably Doug went all in for good reason.
Hmmmmmmmm. It's a pretty weird situation to check KK there but you do actually make some great points. The instant decision would be to shove the river but what actually calls other than AA and AK? I guess you could argue that there are more AK that just call pre rather than AA which are more likely to shove but I'm not entirely sure about that either. AK could arguably (although unlikely) fold pre or COULD shove if he thinks Doug's 5 betting light and wants to take it down there. In all I think there's slightly more AKs than AA and maybe even a few AQs that MIGHT call BUT there's also some really dodgy flushes as well. Is it possible he could hero call with QQ or JJ thinking Doug's made a loose preflop play and is trying to make a play on the river? Hmmmmmm what a spot to be in. I think he's right to shove but it's tighter than it first appears. Conventionally Julius should only really call AK or AA there but I've seen stranger things. Live poker can make some weird things happen. Great analysis. Most people would scoff at the idea of checking back KK there but you've got some valid points imo.
Great ending Doug, really enjoying watching your content you put out!
So funny! That ending was epic. I appreciate your videos and it's old now but congrats on the bracelet!
He could have 67 of diamonds because one time I called a 5 bet with that and I made a flush.
Chavy Cash your a bold face liar. Stop lying to sound cool. As you should know by how many likes u got and comments that noone believes you me also. You sound beyond stupid and childish. Quit lying to sound cool and kick it!!
if that's a joke, it's hilarious
Lapid Palid which one being the joke
The commentator has the most magnificent beard I've seen in a while.
Hahah the ending was awesome Doug!! You are making great vids keep up the good work!
loved the end. I like your creative part. keep your good work going!
I can't believe the poor table etiquette. Nonstop stream of chatting when a huge hand is playing. Surprised this wasn't discussed, or maybe I'm just old.
Doug, even though I was critical of you on your recent post about players getting hacked and security with phones and trusting online sites with passwords, I think you're okay. I think your videos are too wordy and long and I find myself not really even listening to your commentary about hands because it seems like you discuss pretty much every scenario that's possibly and miss the basics about poker in that it's a lot of chance and luck many times. It's not always about "do they have xyz" type of hands in each specific scenario.
It's fine that you discuss the possibilities but again, I think you go way too far with your commentary. If you could minimize it to about 10% of what you discuss, it would be more worthwhile and I would probably listen.
But, in spite of ALL of that, you gotta admit that the comments about your hair being similar to Venessa Selbst are pretty funny and although you probably don't want to admit it, they are pretty accurate. The similarities are there. (And in the words of Jerry Seinfeld - "Not that there's anything wrong with that".)
Video ending is the nuts bro. This is the kind of stuff that makes you gold. Keep it up. You are my Caesar Salad!!
I love the build up you did for your river decision. Too funny. Keep up the good work.
The first few times I saw your videos I did not like them at all ... but eventually you won me over! Great video.
bahahaha..... that ending was great. love the sarcasm and humility
dude....funniest poker video I've ever seen! Well done brother!
Haha omg I literally spit food out on my keyboard at the Julius Ceasar breakdown part. Lol!
End of vid was sick. I look forward to all your new content, so keep up the good work buddy.
Ending had me dying 😂😂 bring back the comedy like all your old videos!!
Briliant video dude. Love your sense of humor. Btw what the thing with betting with right hand or left hand? I'm thinking now that i use often my left hand when i m nutsed.
I laughed so hard at the end. Brilliant editing!
you are so entertaining..... i was rolling with the eye blink and card check!!
Super video, Enjoyed the banter at the table on poker hands in america. You took it well when the preacher man was having some shots, also played well even though you lost. All these compliments don't mean I'm gonna go easy on you in Vegas when I spend my first world series there. Good luck
Great music and live tell deductions haha! Classic Doug.
lol... Doug man.. you were born to do this shit (youtube that is.... although a strong argument could be made for poker and tv drama directing).. I've seen rouggghhhhlllly all your videos, you've definitely made me crack some smiles here or there, but the Mike Caro analysis at the end coupled with the overly intense music honestly had me laughing like a psychopath in my chair. Thought you should know that. I'll def put these reads to use when I hit the local 5-10 game Friday night. Thanks!
The ending was hands down your funniest bit yet hahaha
This is legendary content Doug, sorry about the big loss but as a fellow poker player I feel like all of us here in the chat can relate to this one! Good luck and keep up the great work!
I just love this video, I´ve seen the ending like 5 times, the best! :)
doug you do the best poker videos on the web- awesome work
