It's interesting that it took a Japanese audience to launch Cheap Trick to superstardom. This live album was originally unavailable in the US and, much like The Clash's debut, was only released thanks to Epic having enough brains to respond to the import demand. Budokan is what catalyzed their meteoric rise. Without it, it's possible there would have been just as little attention paid to "Surrender" as had been to their great early singles that failed to chart. Thank you Japan!
A lot of people have wondered about this. The basic thinking is that it is a mix of A. Japan loves American rock music, especially during this time, B. Their songs are fairly clean, and geared towards love and youth, and then C. Robin and Tom looked like every cute anime boy ever drawn.
@Craig Kerwood Cheap Trick opened ! What a great show KISS ALIVE 2 . Before KISS came out the guy sitting directly behind us caught on fire blowing gas into his lighter, he didn't do well.
My deep thanks to whoever uploaded the images of the original concert, a true historical document and reliable proof of the achievements of this band before entering the 80s in foreign lands. Greetings from Ecuador.
Love the song and how they perform it. I'm going to have to fool with it some, down the road, 'cause I want it longer than its less than 2 minutes. Four minutes, at least, is needed.
Look on UA-cam for their rendition of "Goodnight now" with rock & rule in their lyrics. The ending song is almost 4 minutes long with an interesting lead change by Rick!!!!!!
Agreed. A master guitarist who can really move. I imagine he's about all worn out now. He's showing some age in the band's visit to Daryl's House. Long may they all rock, as long as they want to!
I first heard this song in Rock Band 2. As someone who didn't natively speak English, it was hard for me to make out the lyrics as I wasn't paying as much attention to them also to clearly understand them, so all I could make out was something along the line of "hang on van lane is a ginger ale".
Saw them open for KISS in August of 1977. Then i remember being in Tower Records in 1979 and the entire Live at Budokan was being played in store over their loud speakers. Hahahahaha i stayed in the record store for 45 minutes listening to the entire album!!! 👍🎸
Looks like Rick Nielsen did a little "show prep" in the dressing room before they came out. Dynamite band on one of the best live albums ever put out: Cheap Trick at Budokan.
Well, Ain't THAT a shame?! - Nashville show 3 months away, tons of tickets, $193 for anything not in the top most back nose-bleed under the rafters. - Never saw them as a kid. Never going to get to see them at THOSE prices. (Yea, I know it's Rod Stewart's show & they are the opener. But still. UGH) 😪
greatest concert opener ever. man these guys were so special.
They still are!!! Seeing them Friday!!!
I saw them open for Robert Plant. Best opening act EVER!!!
the bass tone here is INSANE

@@sodasullivan The Beastie Boys amusingly began Paul's Boutique with "This is the first song from our new album..."
Robin isn't just a great singer he is a great rhythm player.
Holy Sh*t! Listen to Tom and that 12 string bass on this! This actually sound better than the version on the album.
cheap trick were the dudes not cool enough for punk that made a punk song better than most punks.
They opened for KISS in 1977 at the Inglewood Forum, my first concert at 14 👍😃
@Craig Kerwood Cheap Trick opened ! What a great show KISS ALIVE 2 . Before KISS came out the guy sitting directly behind us caught on fire blowing gas into his lighter, he didn't do well.
I saw them in San Francisco August 16th 1977 at the Cow Palace opening for KISS. Awesome show
I would kill to see Kiss in 77' with Cheap Trick. Where's my time machine

An album every rocker had in the late 70s. Are you ready to Rock
I had a serious crush on Robin Zander back in the day. With his flowing blond hair, what a doll! 😂
Ty, The movie, Over the Edge, for such a great sound track.

The use of the album version in the film "Over the Edge" was perfect.
I love it when he dances around in is short pants.

Why does this sound like it was recorded on an iPhone3?
I think it's cause this was filmed 1978
I was so in love with this number that it was my opening song for my band 40 years ago for at least 10 performances.

I know the band personally. Grew up in the same neighborhood. Always loved them! Still do…new and old members alike.

I've seen them 25 times since they opened for KISS in 77 👍🎸
Rock on!
Damn, everytime I hear Cheap Trick, it reminds me what a complete lightweight Mick Jagger and the Stones were. This is actual talent.
I was 17 @ the time

There's so much Cheap Trick in Guns N Roses
Nirvana too! Kurt confirms it
