    Sorry about the lack of fishing content. We are in lockdown so this is the best I can do. Hope it helps you prepare for when we get out. If you enjoyed this video consider subscribing to see more content like this. Thanks for watching. Leave me a comment about what your favorite fly fishing rig is for rivers and streams.

    Another great video, as a newbie to the waters near Turangi I found this video and your previous research video very helpful. There is so much info out there so getting simple advice is much appreciated.

      I normally nymph but just bought a Czech nymph setup from Barrie, could you run through your dry fly setup.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  4 роки тому

      @@DP-pn2hp I use a 9 foot tapered leader for dries. It tapers to 3x and to that I normally attach about 2ft of 6lb nylon tippet with a 3 turn surgeons not and then a uni knot to the fly. If I do a dropper from the dry I will add 3 to 6ft of 6lb from the bend of the dry with a uni knot to the point fly. Dries are normal royal wulff or parachute adams. Dropper flies 14 flash back pheasant tail or hare and copper. Once this lockdown ends I will try to get a dryfly session in with some tips before the end of the season.

    So a water depth of 6 feet would require a 9 foot leader for the nymph set up?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 роки тому +1

      To get to the bottom yes. I generally fish with a min of 9 foot to my first fly and bigger rivers 12 to 15 ft. Using an adjustable indicator means you just move your indicator when you fish different depths and sometimes the weight of your flies if too light/heavy depending on what you need to do to get the fly presented to the fish.

    Hey mate. Really enjoying your content! Quick question on the mainline you use especially for the deeper pools... I have no idea what type of mainline I have on my 2 reels but they take an awful amount of casting to get the line out far enough... then I have noticed guys who roll cast and with a few simple powerful motions get their line out real far. their line seems 'heavier'?? What am I missing here?
    Cheers in advance.. Tongariro amateur.

      Thanks Asher, glad to hear you enjoy it. I am mostly using a Stone Creek perfect Taper floating line but there are many popular ones from other brands as well like the SA infinity smooth that Alex from Trippin on Trout uses.The key is a decent taper and that it floats high. Your lines might be old and cracked which means they get waterlogged and stick to the surface of the water. The second trick with roll casting is overlining your rod, especially with fast action rods I go 1 line weight up. What this does is it let's the rod load with less line out so shorter casts can work well. I also don't normally fish with less than a 6wt rod on the Tongariro in winter as you do need a fair bit of grunt to deal with 12 foot leaders and big tungsten bomb flies effectively. The flyline you choose is very important and needs to be matched to your rod. Whenever possible try to get a test version of what you want to buy to fish with before you buy. Even if you can borrow a suitable one from a friend to try. I have spent 100s of dollars on lines that I didn't like even though they may still be good. Hope that helps. If you want more detaiĺs feel free to flick me a message on my Facebook page or website www.crazyaboutflyfishing.com

      I am indeed. I didn't do a great deal there only a bit of yellowfish in the vaal, one trip to Rhodes and some stocked dams is pretty much it. I've been in NZ since 2003 and not been back that much. I did do a little bit of salt fly at Sodwanna on a trip back and tried for tigerfish at Josini but that was about it.

    I have recently just moved back to New Zealand . It seems to me that know wants you to make any fishing gear like flies, spoons, spinners as i am hard pressed to find a store that has fly tying materials, or hooks. I already have enough spoon ,spinner parts and other lures to last a life time and some, so where do you purchase your fly tying materials ???????Cannot get every thing at the the 2$ shop..

      I buy most of my stuff online from www.flyfishinginxs.kiwi/. Barrie has most things, it ships quickly, he is easy to contact and his stuff is in stock in NZ. The website can be a bit hard to navigate but just take a bit of time to figure it out and contact Barrie if you have any questions or problems. There is a lot of stuff there for fly tying. Depending on where you are based there are a number of physical stores as well. Auckland has Rod & Reel in Newmarket and Hunting and Fishing (north shore) that sell fly tying materials and are well stocked. If you let me know which city/town you are based in I can find out what your closest shop is.

      I think you might struggle if you don't go to Dunedin or Christchurch and I assume you have been to your local hunting and fishing already. I would be looking at ordering stuff online. You should get everything you need between I love fly fishing mentioned above and maybe also Taupo Rod and Tackle which I have never used but have been told is good. Marine deals also have some stuff but it is often on back order from the supplier. That's the ones I know of that are NZ based. All the best and hope you find what you need.
