  • There was a house in New Orleans they called the Rising Sun and it's long been debated if it ever existed and if so, where it was located. There are several locations that many consider to be the actual House of the Rising Sun.

Whether you believe the House of the Rising Sun was based on a real place or not, you have to admit the history behind the song is pretty fascinating. I really enjoyed diving into the story behind the song.

I’m pretty sure the song is about a house on the corner of Alvar and Dauphine. The madam lived next door and would put a flag up on the big flag pole when a ship would come in. The flag pole was removed when a yankee bought the house. I screamed at him for that.

Back in the mid/late 60s my friends and I went looking for the HotRS during Mardi Gras. Sadly we discovered it was no longer in operation. However, we did find a source who informed us of it's original location. But before he would give us the information we had to swear on pain of death to never divulge it to anyone, in anyway. Since we are all still alive that vow was never broken. I know it was the actual location because the source charged us $5 each for the information. Hope that settles the matter. :-)

There was a Rising Sun Coffee House across Levee St. from the Custom House in the 1830's. In the 1840's there was also a Rising Sun Coffee House near the St. Mary Market. And there was a Rising Sun Hotel as you spoke of.
Also a Rising Sun Hotel at Bayou St. John in the mid 1820's.
In Feb 27, 1822 a fire broke out in the Rising Sun Hotel on Conti and consumed the entire building.

The sun rose early and lighted the coffee house on Levee Street that would have served the dock workers. So it always made sense to me that it was the original location. Several others maybe flourished as well.. but the dockside location seems most plausible. 🌞

I saw Eric Burden at Johnny White's bsr one afternoon on St. Peter Street back in the early 1980s, sing along to the jukebox playing this song. He was with a photographer that I knew. Someone told him to" shut up" , cause they were trying to listen to the song. Oh the irony of that moment....

Actually between the last two that you showed it would make since but if you could do more research and find out the date and a map of that time period that might get you a little closer to knowing. Remember that New Orleans wasn't a big Metopolitan like it is now so for all we know the last house you showed may have been. Just my thought but thank you for putting this together and love seeing the city reopening. Stay safe and hope to see more from you!!!

I'm surprised you didn't go to the old, "Big Daddy's" on Bourbon. This was one of the oldest, most popular and well documented strip bars in the city. It was the site of the famous swinging legs, and mirror swing. Almost every movie filmed in NO, from the 60's to the 90's featured at least one shot of the bar. There were apartments over the club where the dancers lived. It's for this reason that many believe that spot to be, "The House of The Rising Sun".

I had no idea. That the song it self had a long history. The song should be claimed by all establishments that have the history of being a brothel. The Irony is. What I was told while in Nola. First came the Sailors. “Then the ladies of the Night” Finally the Nuns. The Guitar rift you use at the beginning of this Vlog. Is it you playing. By any chance?. It be nice to hear you play your guitar on on your videos if you could.

My uncle would tell me to stay away from the house behind the bar . My old aunts and uncles would say not to even go. But he was my uncle and I wanted to visit with him!! So that is not the house!! It was a 4 plex . Like I said off Jackson Ave . Going towards the river it was on the right hand side about 2-3 blocks from the river . All the seamen would visit there when they came off the ships!!!
