As someone who graduated from high school in 1974, this whole look is very familiar to me. I died laughing over your description of the pulls as “bossy”…and they did have a rather commanding presence. However…being the fossil I now am, I’m in a position to give you a bit of “historical perspective” on that particular style. In the late ‘60’s and a good portion of the ‘70’s, Spanish style was really popular. Those pulls remind me of the hardware on those pieces deemed “Spanish” back in the day. Love what you did with it…your lime wash gave it the Prozac needed to take the edge off and soften it into something one would want to invite into one’s home. Prior to your lovely treatment…it looked like it needed to go to charm school. Love how you reformed it!

Lol, thanks so much Karen!! I love your "historically informed" perspective. 😂😅 That's actually an interesting idea, that this was inspired by Spanish style, I hadn't thought of that. 🤓

@@FurnitureFablesbyAndy I appreciate @KarenLindsey's perspective. I'm a child of the 60's and grew up in Texas. My parents purchased a complete bedroom set in the early 70's that was that chunky style with that "bossy" hardware (she still has it and I'm dying to get my hands on it!). Mom decorated in Spanish style, which at the time was all the rave. I always thought this was because we lived in Texas, but I know now it actually was a trend of the times. BTW, I soooo appreciate you saving this album collection and the cabinet piece. Not sure what generation you are from, but I could see that you appreciated all that you found in the collection. In my opinion, there's no better music generation than the 70's, okay and the 60's too! I think we could be friends!

@@thatoldaner Another child of the 60s here but my mother was too frugal to buy anything new so we never had furniture like that. But I remember it at friends’ houses. (In defense of my mother, I have some wonderful pieces, now likely >100 years old, that were in my house growing up. She bought them “used,” not antique, so very cheap!).

@@thatoldaner thank you, this is so informative!! I'm an early 70's baby myself, so maybe missed the moment this was super trendy? And I agree - the music of the 60's and 70's was so fantastic, and really the heyday of the LP!! I love that my kiddos can get a chance to really see, handle, and hear those records - gotta give my folks credit for saving those and gifting them to me. I'm so happy you "dig" the cabinet in its new finish! For sure, UA-cam friends!!

I'm more of a woodworker than a furniture artist like yourself so if I may offer one piece of unsolicited advice...please don't wear gloves when using a table saw. Ok....I don't know why I'm just now discovering your channel, but let me just say I'm Obsessed!!! I've binged several episodes at a time because the pieces you do are so relatable to what I like or have. The delivery and explanation of your steps and choices are so appreciated! Showing the way you achieve things is just so valuable to a 52 yr old DIYer like myself. I enjoy refinishing furniture and painting pieces. I'm not a flipper, but I just enjoy doing it for my own home or for my kids as the are all now getting their own homes and I'm always helping them save money and decorate. So you have been a complete joy to discover! Better than any Netflix or TV series.... You are truly an artist and the makeovers always leave me speechless. I don't know if its just because we like the same styles, but I feel like we are besties and I'm consulting with you on a project... many times I have watched flippers and then did not care for the end results. But with your fable set ups, related glossary of terms and names of characters used, and then the big ending, I just completely smile and talk back to you with so much cheesy verbiage, than if anyone saw me they would think I've lost it! I'm definitely Your New Biggest Fan!

@@FurnitureFablesbyAndy Gosh, I haven't seen my albums since I haven't been able to navigate the stairs for almost twenty years now. We have a very eclectic collection between hubby and me. When we got married 37 years ago, we only had one album in common. One. Yes, I did pause to think on that a bit before we got hitched!
I don't want to be a Debbie Downer on your lovely fresh channel but my future generation got sick and died on us. Our daughter left us at the age of 27 in 2017. No sympathies are required, thanks. But it does leave us in a bit of a dilemma with what to do with the collections.
We have almost 1,000 vinyl albums and 2,000 hardcover books that no one in our immediate families would appreciate. We've discussed this several times and when we reach the third round of "I dunno, what do you think?" we end up tabling it for ... later.

Hilarious, and very wise, all at once - and completely lovely and uplifting to hear that a marriage of "different vinyl collections" can turn out to be so lasting. And no Downer worries here - and I'll respect your no sympathies request - and just say that I think you've struck on something that can resonate with a lot of us...the value, both practically, monetarily, and emotionally, we place on the things that come into our lives, and the dilemmas that value can create as a result. Great! Honestly, you probably can't go wrong either way...for a coffee table I might be tempted to use Briwax's sealing wax they suggest for going over the lime wax, or go with the Dixie Belle stain since you can seal it with a good strong top coat. Free to be you and me!
    Lots of memories
Sadly, I never took good care of my records, and eventually I got rid of them.
But I do remember cabinets like yours (which now looks better than it did when it was new!).
Glad you decided to keep it - it’s lovely and the elven pulls are just right.

YES!! Loved that record so much. ❤️ The only reason it and all the others have survived is because my parents took care of them for so long. 😅 SO happy to hear you get the elven pulls...lol...thank you!!! ❤️😊

Amy needed this makeover! I’ve never used liming wax but use white wax to tone down orange wood whenever humanly possible 😂😂😂 I think it would be really interesting to revisit this piece and fable it up. Like, a little painting on the hardware (something small and sort of blended in) and a fairy door maybe.Little fairy (elf?) wings poking out where the records are sitting on the side. Things that you wouldn’t see looking at it but hidden whimsy of personal touches of your own storybook.

My friends father had a record player like this. I loved staying at her house because I thought they had nice stuff. We were poor and never had anything new. When I spent Saturday nights, her father would put on John Philip Sousa when it was time to get up so we could go to church. Someone gave us one when I got married in 1974. Sadly, the record player didn't work, but it had a great radio. I think you made a great choice to keep it.

You just brought me back to my childhood! My mom would play all her favorites on our record player, which was housed in an oak record cabinet - straight out of the seventies. Please play us a Joan Baez classic, "Diamonds and Rust," one of my absolute favs to this day.

I just did a piece with AH cerusing wax. You buff the wax afterwards and it leaves a satin sheen. I might buy the liming wax next time I go to the hardware store. Great job love your videos and storytelling.

I'm kinda glad you kept it in the family, at least for now. It's a nice piece with a personal history and it looks great. I am glad you mentioned Steve Ramsey as he is a GREAT resource for beginning woodworkers.
Safety tip: Please do NOT wear gloves when working with a table saw. It is so easy to ease a piece of wood toward the blade with your hand and with a glove on, fingers are much bigger and BAM, it catches on the blade and you have yourself a terrible situation. I'd hate to see yourself in that situation.

Thank you ❤ a great restoration - I grew up with vinyl records (and shellack ones before that) in the sixties & seventies and we were always told to store records completely vertical so they would not warp. You could buy (ugly!!) plastic record holders which would keep about 20 records vertical without leaning on each other. I can remember orange, white and black holders…

Lovely job on a piece that I remember well, as I graduated high school in 1972. I’ve refinished a few pieces in my time. I definitely recommend a finish for teak unless you like that weathered gray (I never did and never will). My go to for teak is to use teak oil. It reminds me of ting oil finish - which I would also recommend.
Love your channel and the creative entertainment fables.

True! I considered doing that, but decided not to, just in case I wanted to remove the paper, and found it was extra difficult/stuck underneath that little bit nailed to the frame. But always love ideas from the "peanut gallery"!! 👍😊

I think if you apply the wallpaper to the plywood back before nailing it to the cabinet you might achieve a better level of control over adhesion and an overall "seamless" look because you wouldn't have to cut pieces to the size of the gap, you could cut a bigger one and its edges would be covered by that bit of cabinet that is nailed to the plywood piece. I love the finished look!

    • @FurnitureFablesbyAndy
      @FurnitureFablesbyAndy  3 роки тому +1

Thanks Kat!! I love that idea - I think I decided against it just because I worried that if I ever needed to take that paper off, it would be tricky if it were under that little bit attached to the frame. 😊 (But maybe not - and definitely would be waaaay easier for me to install!!)

My parents had a similar unit with fabric covered speakers in each side front......with room for LPs in the center. Inside the top was the turntable and radio system. The handles on this were positively medieval dungeon -- yech! BUT after restoring the brass and then the white buffing, they looked great. Liming isn't my style and I did not like the simple gouging on the doors, BUT oak was perfect for the lime wax and you did a great job on piece that is so friggin' versatile! You could even put folded sweaters in it, shoes, blankets as you showed, linens, towels, buffet.....very useful around the house. Great job on a piece that was not very appealing visually but turned out light and cheerful with that bit of brass sparkle.
