It amazes me how much he changed from 2013 to 2015. I'd dare to say he even looked young for his age all the way until 2015. Then it seemed like he aged like 10 years in 2, but still looked strong and good. Then he sadly left us :(
That was one of the coolest EVH solo's I've ever seen. He will never cease to amaze me with his guitar antics. I thank God I was born in this era of Rock and Roll so I could enjoy the best guitar player of all time. This video is from 20 years ago and their is still no one that even comes close. Long live the "god of Rock" Eddie Van Halen
Man Eddie looked like he was struggling a lot with the drinking and smoking here. Glad to see he has cleaned up. He looks so much happier and healthier now. Ill tell ya man, drugs are an evil, evil, evil thing. Good to see Ed has come around on the healthy side in 2012. I look forward to seeing you rock like the greatest guitar player in history that you truly are in 2013. Rock on Ed, glad to see you healthy finally.
1979 my parents were on a trip, I was 12 and my 21 year old uncle watching me wanted to see VH so bad he took me to the concert. Ed started the show messing around (which is like incredibly intense guitar work for most) and I asked my uncle "WHO IS THAT? I WANT TO BE LIKE HIM" It was the engine for getting my first "Hondo" cheap guitar. 42 years later, thousands of dollars spent and still can't do Ed. LOL.
the tapping part of eruption is fun to learn it since it was what inspired me to play when i heard it so it was the first thing i learned. its the basic 4th and 6th interval principle
I say you really, REALLY need to listen to Ed's guitar playing. You keep insisting that his playing is one dimensional (tap tap wank wank noodle diddle poodle). Listen to Year To The Day, Respect The Wind, Humans Being, 5150, The Seventh Seal, Can't Stop Lovin' You, Feelin', Little Guitars, Hear About It Later, Push Comes To Shove, I'm The One, Women In Love, Josephina & Fools. Y'know, the songs you don't hear on the radio & take an amazing talent to produce.
Bigups to Eddie Van Halen for creating all of his original techniques without the help of how to vids and the internet amongst other things. A true innovator and creator! Rest In Peace Legend.
Eddie is not human. Eddie is a genius, and the reason why i wanted to play guitar. all my influence from dime, page, tommy, randy, and ace all add up to me influences. but no one comes to eddie's style
I think a good portion of this solo was edited out at 1.35. Also at 5.11 they edited out his slap guitar part. As with the whole OU812 Tokyo Dome show, much of it is missing. It was edited for tv. It would be great to see the complete show. Running With the Devil, Finish What You Started, Cabo Wabo and Aint Talkin Bout Love are all missing as is half of the drum solo and all of the bass solo.
@metalvampire660 Delay pedal, chorus pedal and reverb. It's from his peice callec Cathedral from the Diver Down album. The studio version does have that much gain though.
Very true. You react to art your way. Art is a very personal thing which is different for everyone. However, you do not decide what is good and bad for other people.
Hmmm...this is an example of a show where I felt EVH had lost a bit of his youthful spark in the late 80s. It's hard for me to define...but when Alex came in at the very end.....Eddie got it back for a second and just launched into the joy of playing. That was the EVH who inspired me so much.
Well said, freespeechisgod, EVH's music is still being played in sports venues everywhere, making him a Rock God. Thats why he is a billionaire and continues to marvel the world with his god given talents. Well said Adnoydall, err FreeSpeechisGod, well you know Kendall. EVH is God, great post! EVH is God
Thanks for your kind words... But: He has claimed himself that he don't use any pedals whatsoever, cause he doesn't like having something between the guitar and the amp. However later on he said he used a MXR Flanger, and a wah wah. That was it.
its weird that in a way the 80,s rock scene died after this concert and today you will never see the likes of van halen guns n roses ACDC metallica motley crue or dokken on mtv ever again sad but true but for the few of us rockers from the 80,s that still survive all i can say to you is rock on
Nowhere am I denying Eruption as being a solo piece, I differentiate it from a structured song with verse, chorus, verse, solo etc precisely because it lacks verse, chorus, verse. All it offers is Ed screeching in place, whereas music with verse, chorus at least offers a narrative leading to a sane cohesive solo. Unlike, say, Jump which is an ordinary keyboard pop song until Ed interrupts Dave, wanks loose with guitar. The concerto you mentioned lacks any sudden alien hysterical screech in it.
Doesn't matter. Eruption is an instrumental solo piece. That's very common in music and has been for centuries. And every single time, the instrumental solo is a "look at me" moment. There is nothing at all unusual about this. You are searching for something to complain about. Your comment on the quality of it is merely your personal opinion which does not apply to anyone else.
@SpaceHead99 - One day, about 10 years ago, they were remodeling and I saw it in a back room. I went back there and a salesman let me hold it, but not play it. Pretty cool...
at first i thought he mostly played the same stuff but now i know what he acully plays god i love all the affects he uses i wonder how one man could make up all these sounds.
You can declare YOUR feelings all you like. But you seem to think your opinion is a "truth" which "is". "This IS stale". No...it's only "stale" to YOU. Others such as myself find it very exciting and inspiring. You have an inflated sense of your own opinion.
Then Why do you keep watching it. UA-cam offers us millions of songs to choose from yet you keep obsessing over a 35 year old song that you do not even like ! EVH was for the most part still a kid when he wrote Eruption He is all grown up now, Don"t you think it is time for you to do the same?
Kendall james Barnes of Milwwaukee wisconsin, 50 yr old divorced, alcoholic and still in school No job and homeless. You have my sympathies. Go on take this victory.....have a taste of winning before you die :)
The clarinet soloist in Mozart's concerto doesn't stand up and say "look at me", the conductors directs the soloist to stand up so the audience can look them. Just like you teach you dog to sit up and give his paw, he does so at your command, he doesn't say "look at me". On topic, I never claimed the wanky, hokey gimmick of tapping always existed in Eruption, I quoted Wiki: "Eruption existed as far back as 1976, when it contained no tapping" Need I quote it again? I'll do so if it helps you.
@metalvampire660 No problem. That is a common mistake people make. He's used many pedals. Wah pedals, Flanger, Phaser, EQ, Delay, Chorus, Reverb and more. Just listen to the VH tunes like Aint Talkin Bout Love, Unchained, Eruption and more. Although rare, somethimes his pedal board is shown and you can see his pedals.
Damn you Ssmmy for ever getting on stage with VH and covering a Led Zeppelin tune. You ensured that VH would split instead of just beating the crap out of David Lee Roth until he came back to Earth. Van Hagar was NOT Van Halen. No more hard alcohol on stage with Dave being drunk off his behind telling jokes mid-concert, no more panties and bras flying to the stage with topless drunk blondes needing to be rescued (it was therapeutic) and the crunch was gone forever. By the time Dave realized it, he lost his voice and went full Dave.
It was actually Jimmy page that eddie said he had seen tapping but eddie was the first to master the technique n so that is why he is known as the creator of tapping
My uncle frequently makes the argument for Van Halen as well, and I could get into that. Wouldn't mind seeing Neal Schon as one of the headliners, either.
I think Eds fans believe they can get the record companies to sign them up because they learned to play Erupshun, and its the greatest solo ever, which guarantees a contract. Its not stale at all, no way
Wrong. Eddie said he saw Jimmy Page doing a PULL OFF from the 4 th fret to the 2 nd fret then to the open G. All on the G string. Eddie came up with the idea of using his left hand as a capo in a sense. Putting it behind the pulled off notes. Thus, tapping became a huge part of Eddies style. Listen to Catherine, studio cut on you tube. Say what you want, but this man shook up the guitar world.
@Adnoydal he probably plays this so much becuase its his signature style, following the same patterns and generally tapping. You wouldnt go to a concert to see a band and slag them off for playing their own songs.
@Adnoydall - It's too bad Eddie didn't live up to your expectations. I wonder how impressed he is with your accomplishments. Your comments are invalid, though. The Jump solo is perfect, and not one lick in it was repeated from Beat It. Speaking of breezy pop fluff, it's time to hit repeat on your Dire Straights CD.
No, the Clarinet Concerto contains a solo...which is meant as a "look at me" moment for the clarinet player. The player even stands up to play it typically. You are trying to change the topic of discussion. You have been claiming only EVH's solos are "look at me" moments. That is not close to true. All solos exist for that reason and always have.
Sadly that cigarette was one of many that ultimately took a legend from us.
least we got all that music outta him before he passed.
So true. He died way too young.
It amazes me how much he changed from 2013 to 2015. I'd dare to say he even looked young for his age all the way until 2015. Then it seemed like he aged like 10 years in 2, but still looked strong and good. Then he sadly left us :(

@@andres.escalante98 Yeah. He was undergoing treatment.
Wow, after finding Waldo it seems as though he plays a mean guitar

you use a chorus pedal and a delay dedal. then, to get that cool effect, for every second note you play, turn the volume knob on and off
he played a harmonic and whammyed it while he was walkin.
@izaberoful its called warping like every other guitar does

Ik it’s been 9 years but he uses a tape echo and uses the volume knob and turns it up when you hit the note and back down real fast
He didn't use a lot of gain back then, and still sounds good and sustainy. Man it's all came from his fingers!
He really didn’t. Shows just how clean his playing was.
