FREE GS550 - New Tires!! - Ready For The Road! - EP10

- The GS550 is finally getting some new tires in this video making it ready for the road! The old dry cracked tires did allow me to ride and test the bike just a bit but are not safe to ride on at all so I replaced them with some new Shinko 712s. I've used these before and they are fine for the intended use of the bike. After sitting 33 years this bike is finally road worthy being both reliable and safe!

Every morning, with coffee, one of these ~ videos~, the "normal" Nighthawk manual should be here this morning and now taking full advantage of fb marketplace. I have a"cluster' of a Aquarium stuff. Really cool if you're into fish. Setting up my "Aquarium Corner" ~ $200.00 on marketplace. Also setting up two sketchy 9hp 4 stroke outboard motors with my 23 foot sailboat. Same thing ~ a "Boat Corner" ~ $500.00 on marketplace. A ridiculous deal. The boat's trailer is worth 2G. I do not care. I am now into "Motorcycle world." Period. Eventually I will sell my house. The whole pivot, BJ is these very special videos. I don't know what to say. Not kidding. (not gonna lie). I am all in! Thank you so much for sharing all of this. On and on and on. 〰✨🌸✨〰
"dang it, now I can't break out the sawzaw"😂
Hey a guy can dream!
I appreciate your anti OCD "just going to clean them and put them back on" deal. Easy to get hung up on the minutiae especially if you dont plan to keep it. Good job.
Exactly. With so many projects I need to keep that in check
There is a far easier way to remove the rear axel on a GS500. Remove the 2 vertical bolts at the end of the swing arm. unbolt the caliper, loosen the axle bolt (you don't even have to remove the nut) and the axel with the wheel still on it will slide right out the back of the swing arm. Sorry to be that guy, but I hope this will save some one some time. I do love the channel please keep the new posts coming.
Dang I didn't even consider that! Noted!
Hey...its fun to do some “rush-torations” sometimes! Not everything has to be a “build.”. Gives us something to ride and enjoy while building dream bikes! 👍
100% accurate! Low-buck, low-stress projects make the big ones easier as well.
Used to have a 81 GS550L. Exact same color. Had Reg/Rectifier issues with. Glad you didn't have that issue.
They do go bad with age. Luckily replacements aren't too expensive
I definitely miss my GS550EF, the full fairing version of that bike. It was super good looking, good sounding, and a great first bike to own. I’m tooling on a Suzuki S50 right now that I bought for $300 and stumbled on your page. Keep up the good work!
The EF was great looking! I appreciate it 🙏
I had a shop drop my exhaust off from my 81 GS1000L.... Unbolted it from the engine.... I looked out and saw them doing that and asked why they didnt just unbolt the shocks? Needless to say they messed up and stripped the exhaust flange bolts.... awesome! Enjoying your content !
Ugh I'd be furious on that!
Tires, Quick and dirty, just how we like em!
Every old bike I get has gt qualifiers on it! I run Shinko 712s and really like them.
Suzukis looking good!
Thaaaank ya! Yea I've used these before and they are fine by me for an old cruiser for sure. Handling is great so far without pushing too hard on new rubber
I had no idea you could put tubeless tires on these rims. I have an 81 GS450L (with the same rims) and when I replaced my old tires I replaced them with tubed tires, which is obviously a HUGE pain. This is why I watch your videos.
HA yea easy mistake to make. If they are cast wheels they usually say on the side they are tubeless. Don't hold me to this but I think a majority or rims have that info stamped on them somewhere
It would be hard for me not spend a whole day cleaning those wheels, then end up taking them to the powder coater HAHA....new rotors while it's off....awesome GS. I just acquired a 1980 GS850G I'm bringing back to life....subbed!
Oh I feel ya there. Very easy to get carried away and get nothing done. This was a great bike for the season. A friend owns it now and enjoys it often. You should check out my barn find cb750 playlist for an epic bike revival!
BJ good to hear what someone you like thinks of Shinko tires. I had new tires put on the GS. The bike shop I did it at recommended Dunlop 404s. Im not as cool as you doing it myself. I love that you keep referencing this as a race bike every time you take something off it you don't like. Thats awesome. Don't forget viewers, BJ will sell you this bike for 13,500ish 😉
🤣🤣🤣 13,300 with the discount code "racebike" Dunlop 404s are not bad, but not great. They are stock on many bikes so they are just mass produced and a bit more for longevity rather than handling. Again these aren't anything special but I feel they are more sticky than others.
@@BrickHouseBuilds Thanks for the info perhaps I'll give the Shinkos a try some day. Have a great day - get out this weekend, I'm going to try tomorrow, a bit rainy here today
i replaced the dunlop qualifiers on my 84 magna with shinko 712's. it rode ALOT smoother & seemed to feel much better in the turns as well.i doubt the shinko's will last as long due to softer compounds, but for the price, they do well for my type of riding.i like them.
Right, I don't get to put a ton of miles on stuff so I like softer grippy tires
Awesome, watching this while waiting for my front tire to be changed on my 03 Z1000 👍
Haha hopefully they are doing it better than me! I was using my head to hold the tire spoons at one point lol
@@BrickHouseBuilds I took the wheel off and brought it to them with a replacement tire .... Shouldn't take long for them although it's around that time people dust off their bikes and bring them in, steady but not overall a mad house here
@@IrnMaiden304 That's the way to do it. Saves a lot of money
I have spoons, just not a way to balance the wheel. So for $40 and some change ... Let them do it, plus I don't have to look at a used up tire sitting around my garage 😆 and it supports local business ... I call that a win / win.
@@IrnMaiden304 Definitely a win win! These old tires are still in my van lol
Timer shows 9 minutes and 6 seconds and that's with wiping it down... you show off!!!! LOL! It took me damn near an hour and a half to do mine for the first time
😅😅 Im no expert but I've done it a few times! Having a beas breaker sure helps!
@@BrickHouseBuilds bead Breakers absolutely help, I actually have the exact same spoons you have! LOL! And they work damn good but of course you already know that! I actually need to change the tires on my 73 CB750 really really soon like probably Monday, hopefully it goes smooth also, keep up the great work brother!
@@oilinmyblood3906 Thank ya and good luck with it!
where you get the bars and what size rear tire
Everything is linked in the description
Nice work, old style. is this tubeles tire for the rims?
I have a gs 550 from '82, would it be alright for putting tubeles tire on my bike? My rims are similar to yours, also made of aluminum.
I like your videos,best regards!
Correct, mags are generally tubeless
WHEN ARE WE SEEING THE CX AGAIN???
Working on it! Just got photos back from paint yesterday and should pick the bike up this next week. Trying to think about how I want to debut it but omg I assure you it will look amazing 😉
So tubes are optional? Im new to all this
Tubes are needed depending on what wheel you have. Generally mags are tubeless and spokes are tube type. The tire doesn't care as much on if you run a tube or not. Lots of info out there on this subject for pros vs cons on either
Thanks so much for the video's, teaching me alot. Just wondering if you had to seal the inside of the gas tank of the gs Suzuki?
Well thank you for watching and supporting!
For the GS the tank was simply not worth a liner so I only put some putty on the trouble spots and crossed my fingers. Its still holding up for the new owner. I'll actually see that bike this weekens
What do we do when they stop making tires that fit these bikes? Can you put on different rims?
This is an extremely common size so I wouldn't worry.
How do you balance the tire.is there a mark on the tire to where you position it too
Many manufacturers have a marking for where to position the tire in relation to the valve stem like these. That is not a balance though. I typically never balance anything as Im not out setting land speed records. For detailed balancing info check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/f5xt1cTaCqE/v-deo.html
Ive got a 1980 Suzuki gs850g if I wanted to put a bigger tire on the back, what size could I go to ????
Thank You
Im not sure what your max size would be
What are the tire sizes that you used...?😅😅😅 thanks 👍
The standard sizes for the bike. 100/90/19 and 130/90/16
I'm glad you didn't paint those wheels you make too many changes to those bikes and they become unrecognizable, just one man's opinion.
We all like different things. If I own the bike I get to do what I wish with it which is usually modifying them to suit my style or needs.
Don't paint black..reminds me of bobbers..hate it when people wreck old bikes..
What? Who's wrecking bikes?
Maybe start with episode 1 of this playlist and go from there. ua-cam.com/video/nEWPo7O8r8Q/v-deo.html
Tires are always a bitch aren't they? It's not even fun on a bicycle, I can't imagine how awful it is to do on a motorcycle or car.
They definitely aren't fun but as long as you aren't in a hurry its not so bad
