    THIS is actually the clearest most straight forward version of the CB350 electrical version out there. I havent checked but if you guys have a wiring harness + installation video / combined with all the information here: it would finally be the ultimate defacto wiring video and save people so much time. Good stuff guys

    Great video, as always! And just at the right time for my own work (XS650).
    Maybe this falls under proprietary secret/art, but I would love to see Stefan walk through a few finished bikes and their harnesses, just to get some ideas on how to finish off the whole thing. There are so many diagrams and diagramming videos, but so few that show the result of all that work. You guys so clearly know your stuff it's a shame for it to be hidden, even under such beautiful bikes.

    Thank you for this fantastic video. I just bought my first bike over the weekend and I can't wait to get an M-unit Blue & most of the motogadgets. 1983 Honda CB550. Guy didn't want it because the wiring was "Too much" for him to deal with. (Melted wiring from the main fuse to what I assume is some kinda of a power distribution box and a silly amount of scotch locks...) I replaced most of those wiring issues the day after I got it and now it runs great. But, as a electrical/diagnostic automotive tech all I could think about was, "Man it would be fantastic if I could computerize this system somehow". Then BOOM some how your videos pop up on my UA-cam "Watch next"... So glad it happened. I am a HUGE fan of all of your videos and all these gadgets you're showing off. Keep it up!!! Showed your videos and the M-Unit off to a few of my buddies that "talked me into" getting a bike and now they all want an M-unit. Thank you.

    • @4stringbazooka
      @4stringbazooka 7 років тому

      Hold up.. With an M-unit I don't actually need an Ignition box!?!? Hah I guess that makes sense. I've never had a reason to study points or carbs.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому

      With the m-Unit you do need to have some type of ignition system. It can be points, or TCI, or a full ECU. But the m-Unit does not control spark timing. The m-Unit only provides power to the ignition system, the actual spark control is usually the OEM system, or an aftermarket system designed for your specific motorcycle.

    • @4stringbazooka
      @4stringbazooka 7 років тому

      Hah. I kinda figured that out today... Once I looked at the wiring diagram and did my fist full in depth visual inspection of the wiring harness. I assume the M-Unit supply's power the... CDI..? Spark unit. Now that I got the bike running. I plan on getting at least an M-unit Blue and a starter solenoid from you guys as soon as I can.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому

      With the m-Unit blue the ignition output supplies power to the ignition system (usually the coils and control box) BUT if you have a REAL CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) those are self contained in terms of power and timing, so typically you need to use a normally closed relay to ground the kill switch wire. Then use the Ignition output on the m-Unit to power the relay control coil so the contacts open, un-grounding the kill wire, and then the ignition will spark.

    I have a story about wiring! First off I'm a friend of Sammy Parker at Revival, tonight his dad, Ron and I are building an old four speed HD transmission.
    Story,: Back in 1972 when I was 19 II built up a 45 trike chopper. Raymond Smith from Choppers Fair drew up a simple wiring diagram which I followed - my first wiring job and it worked! One day I was riding down Houston's 610 loop and a wire melted into an exhaust pipe frying the whole harness (no fuse)! Dumbfounded I just stood there looking at it. This Mexican guy stopped in a van, didn't say a word and gave me a roll of electrician tape and half a joint and left. I finished the joint and then disconnected what was left of the harness. I then salvaged some wire, ran one hot wire from the battery to the coil and another to the points. Trike fired right up and over the next week I did a little better wiring job.
    I've wired dozens of bikes since then, I solder every connection and use Molex terminals to simply unplug everything.for the roadside park rebuild.

      Thats a great reminder on why its important to consider routing and clearance...its never fun to get stuck on the side of the road, but sometimes its an opportunity to meet new friends. Its also a good reminder of why you should wire your own bike....cause when the smoke comes out you have a decent idea of how to get it to go again.
      Thanks for the story, and now I'm off to make sure Sam has gotten his full ration of harassment for the week.

    What I learned from the video is have a professional do it. 😂
    My 94 lowrider needs all new wiring and it's hard to find someone to do it. The younger generation needs to get into motorcycle mechanics as it seems far n few out there. Though most mechanics today only know computers being not skilled in knowledge of old bikes.
    Like building homes it's best to know the field physically not just book wise. I had like 5 younger mechanics look at my bike they and myself changed every electrical component yet the bike would still stall after riding for less than a mile cause it was a bad wire the whole time. wasted tons of time and money on uneducated mechanics. One call to an old school mechanic a number I got from a dealership employee figured out my issue in 5minutes over the phone. He told me exactly where the bad wires were when I looked sure enough there was my issue. A thing only an old school mechanic would know as a computer can't tell you this info. wish I'd have called him first with the time n money wasted I could have restored my lowrider. It's still collecting dust atm :(

    It was just fine. The varying developments in design often make for the greatest complications with any wiring job. Some shortcuts are nearly impossible with set systems, but leave to engineer's to complicate the Hell out of the simplest of things, and for all the wrong reasons. Diagnostics comes ready to mind.

    Great video, it really helped me get a better understanding of how I should plan out my wiring for my build. But there is something I caught and I'm not sure if it is a mistake. at 22:15 you draw in the tail light circuit, but you tied it into the brake light circuit instead of the low beam circuit. Wouldn't this mean that the brake/tail light only turn on and off as opposed to having a high/low setting?

    • @zeromystik

      Or does the M-unit supply power at higher resistance when the bike is turned on? (to show the high/lo setting.)

I’m going to check the wiring. Thank you so much great work buddy. Keep up the great work from England. Thanks man

      Assuming this bike is relatively un-modified, it is probably something simple, and its a good idea to start by looking for pinches, rubs, and breaks along the wire harness. This sounds like it could be a tricky issue to identify. You might also consider replacing the temp sensor, as those can wear out over time, and they are cheap and easy to replace.

    Good description however a little fuzzy on the post 80s bikes. My 82 virago does not have points however it does have a TCI or igniter unit with field coils that determine when to ground the master coils for spark. Do you know if I am right in feeding the brown and red regulator rectifier leads into the positive terminal on the m unit with the battery lead? What should I do with the yellow wire coming off of the regulator rectifier? A little help would be amazing. And thanks for taking the time to put such an awesome video together

    Excellent... Stefan you must be an EE. I watch and took notes on all the wiring videos!
    I own a 1972 350cc R5 Yamaha kick start only (no push button starter) that I rarely ride. Converted the old ignition to VIPE CDI.
    Do you sell a battery eliminator kit?
    Can you put together a video on wiring an Accel Battery eliminator.
    Because I take the bike out so infrequently the battery doesn't get enough use.

      He's not an EE but knows enough to seem like one at times. We offer the BAT-PAC as a battery eliminator. They were originally developed for RZ350's and I had a great experience with the one on my RZ.

      A GL provides a lot of opportunities to simplify wiring depending on what you intend to do with it. Really, the best place to start this process would be our tech articles section. The Wiring Theory article and Comprehensive List will explain what must stay and what can go, while the Universal wire diagram will give you a foundation for working out your model-specific system.

    Okay, getting an answer might be a long shot but at least I have to try. I have desperately been trying to connect the M.Unit Blue to my old CBR 600 -92 but the ignition output is confusing. I have kept much of the original system which means that the pulse generator on the bike feeds the spark unit to initiate spark (wasted spark) in the plugs. But where am I supposed to connect the ignition output of M.Unit Blue? Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  6 років тому +1

      Ok, this question is a bit too technical to get into on youtube, but the basic idea is that the m-Unit will provide power to the ignition system, and the rest of the ignition system remains the same. The best way to handle this is to get a good legible wiring diagram for your year and model, and then trace all the connections from the spark unit(s). The CBR should be a 12V dc ignition and the pulse coil is only providing the timing signal to tell the system to spark at the right time. If you need more input send a copy of the wire diagram to techsupport@revivalcycles.com

      @miguelguerrero1305 6 років тому

      I think I solved it by connecting the cable that previously went from the ignition switch through the fuse box to the kill switch and then to the spark unit and ignition coils to the M.Unit Ignition output. At least I get a spark now where I previously had none. Thanks, guys!@@RevivalCycles

      Yes, it would. This video is just a demonstration of how to draw a wire diagram and a CB350 was an example. An XS will have some differences but the theory is the same and just as easy. Check out the wiring guides in the knowledgebase on our website or email techsupport@revivalcycles.com and we'll lay it out for you.
