Oikawa is actually arguably the best team player in the whole series. He can enhance his team to the point where they look like they're playing completely differently. His hunger for the point is just the thing that a leader needs to have, he trusts his team to score
and his team trusts him to score when he can. The move where he dumps is just the smartest possible thing she could've done. Also, his irritation with Kageyama has a reason too, which will be explained later. He isn't "Fake", it's more like he is very confident, in his own ability, and that of his team as a whole. He is actually a very deep character, as you will see over the seasons.

I love the analogy of a team being an orchestra and the setters being the conductors (which would make the captains or the coach / playmaker the composer, I suppose?). Oikawa for all his banter and surface pettiness is definitely NOT a prideful ball hog or anything. I don't believe it's a spoiler to say he is far and away the better TEAM player between him and Kageyama, at least at this point and time. You'll see more nuance to his character as time goes by.

Mind games is also a part in volleyball. That's why oikawa did those stuff although yea cocky but it works. Also Service is the only way where you can score when there are no blocks so which is why they would call it "Service Ace" when they score. And Oikawa's power serve is strong weapon because if you can't receive it properly then they will just score and score so all those plays they thought of will be ineffective if they can't receive the ball so yea. So Oikawa's service being a non-team player trait is understandable if you have not played volleyball yet and just got into it by just watching this anime. Still understandable.
Edit: I know I am late on this by commenting but I just want to help them understand that's all. Since volleyball can be a bit complicated.

Seijoh is a team with the most complete dynamic I would say. As mentioned previously, any of the players in Seijoh could transfer to any team and have the chance to be the ace of the new team. That just shows how good all of them are.
And Seijoh 3rd years aren't cocky, that's just how they look like 😂 All of the 3rd years has what you called a "Resting bitch face" lmao but they're the most chill guys you could ever meet in all of Haikyuu characters. I also love Oikawa because of the realness he brings to the show, despite how big of a mouth or a jerk he's being cause you KNOW that is how some people be in real life sports lmao.
But Oikawa is not an asshole or cocky that's for sure. He's not a bad guy and you'll see that soon in Season 2. Rather than cocky, he's confident in the skills he acquired through ENDLESS practice and efforts and you can see that he's actually really humble by the way he is not ashamed to acknowledge how much of a genius Kageyama is when it comes to setting. He just says shit most of the time to mess with people. You just gotta read the lines and mood of the room REAL carefully when it comes to Oikawa's lines. That's how you get to know him as the person he really is.

^just to very briefly respond to Surge's one off comment about Volleyball not having 'plays' in the same way the NFL does, for example... that's mostly because you guys are at Season 1 and your understanding of Volleyball is about as deep as Hinata's, or maybe Tsukishima's, at least if you're purely learning by watching the show.
Haikyuu starts off relatively basic, and it tries to drum in some of the more important theories behind good Volleyball play, the kind of stuff that'll always be useful to know. This is an important part of why people start noticing good/bad plays in the show before they're commented on by it, or sometimes with no commentary needed: you are being taught the sport in a very practical way, and at the moment you guys are (or were, considering how these are uploaded XD) on the fundamentals.
As the seasons progress and even more so as you get into the manga, the show continues to go deeper and deeper into the sport of volleyball, and you can clearly tell that you can prepare for just about ANYTHING providing you have the right knowledge going in. Running specific 'plays' is definitely a thing, but you're right in assuming that far more important in Volleyball is the ability to adapt beyond your intended 'play'. As our lord and savior Coach Donny says, the team that makes the last adaptation wins.
This is also true for sports like Basketball or American Football, but Volleyball's back and forth nature (created by the serving side being at a natural disadvantage) and the concept of break points gives players more breathing room to analyse changes in the opponent's game and react, as opposed to the fast paced nature of Basketball for instance.

In college, watching opponent games is definitely a thing. And in Japan they take volleyball serious and I wouldn't be surprised if the high level high school teams did this too

I don't understand why they're hating on Oikawa. He's such a formidable player. You guys should learn not to root for the Main team alone. Karasuno isn't the only team who's giving their best.

Guys, you are ignoring that Oikawa is always saying he is not a genius while Kageyama is. Plus he is a good leader (always paying attention to his team) and knows how to play mind games with the opposite tem which is amazing(ly irritating). You'll get to know and nderstand him more on the 2nd season but just pay attention to when he talks and you'll notice he is actually one of the most complex characters. Good reaction tho!
