- Ukrainian troops are preparing to defend the north-western city of Sumy in the Kharkiv region, as Russia continues its summer offensive.
Russian forces have already penetrated the border area near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city in recent weeks.
The US-based Institute for the Study of War think tank believes Putin's main aim is to create a buffer zone, as does Russian military analyst Anatoly Matviychuk.

There is no war between NATO and Russia because Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Ukraine cannot become a member while the war is ongoing. Even if the war ends, the approval of 32 Nato members is required for membership.

Poland military strategist expect Russia to bomb Kharkiv extensively while Russian troops encircle and bypass Karkhiv to the west, cut off supply lines, cut off escape route, link up with the Eastern front, then battle of Kharkiv begins. This also allows attack on Ukraine's fortifications on Eastern front from both sides. Will require Russia adding another 300,000 soldiers to cover an area that large.

Unlike the unfortunate civilians of Donbas who have been harassed and murdered as part of the US and NATO backed Galician (Banderas) Nazis pogrom of ethnic cleansing since 2014, now extended to Russia, the civilians in Kharkiv are not being targeted by a law abiding Russia. Obviously, Russia, having come this far, must take Kharkiv and Odessa as well fortifying the Suwalki Gap and establishing a land bridge to Transnistria. As I wrote in 2022 after the US, UK, France and Germany torpedoed the peace deals of Istanbul and Minsk (1 & 2)

It seems the intention is not to capture Kharkiv, the defence of that city is set to be tougher than Bakhmut, and there are not forces to encircle it right now. In WW2 Kharkiv changed hands between soviets and germans twice, and the soviets were able to take it in a second attempt that left +200K dead. All around it is flat farmland, approaching the city through minefields in full view of drones, artillery and long range missiles is a very horrible mission.
