I’m watching this from Uruguay 🇺🇾, I grew up watching movies from SF Valley, and all I can say is that I’m in love with that place, I never been there but I feel like is part of my childhood. One of my dreams are to be there with my wife and daughters some holidays.

I grew up watching movies from the SF valley too, like the terminator movie, or pulp fiction. I’m from there as well, I’m away at the moment up by Oregon because of the rise in crime. But soon in the next coming months I will return and create new memories once again! I hope you achieve your dream of going there or possibly living there one day with your family! Love from San Fernando Valley!

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, and I visited your absolutely beautiful country of Uruguay in late 2008. I drove through 15 of the 19 departments there, spent 3 days at the termas in Dayman, a night in Colonia de Sacramento, a night in Nueva Helvetcia. I took pictures of many of the classic cars there. On my wall in my office now, I have an article hanging up that one of your papers did in 2005 of "uruguayan descendientes de polacos judios se reunen con su familia tras casi un siglo". That article was about a fellow classmate that I went to school with in the San Fernando Valley in 1970, and 71, and finding his family members there. Slaudos de los ee.uu. de america!

I lived in West Hills (formaly Canoga Park) from 1957 to 1979 and in that time frame I saw a lot of changes like the corn fields and citrus farms which were gone by the late 70's. I live in Phoenix right now and I sometimes miss the valley.

Biff's Coffee Shop was used in that Boogie Nights scene across the street from the Church. And right next door to Biff's Coffee Shop was Licorice Pizza where I bought a lot of Records ands Tapes as a kid, and the Miss Donuts in the Vons Sopping Center was originally a Winchell's Donuts. Omg! I spent so much of my late teen to early 20s watching so many bands play at the country club back in the mid to late 80s! Saw so many many bands that you mentioned, like Poison, Dokken, Warrant, Motley Crue, Slayer, and Metallica and Megadeath among others I loved when bands would play under the radar and have a surprise performance like UFO! I used to help my friend pass out flyers for Doreen and other bands. wish that place was still open as a concert place instead if a church so I could take my kids and show where so many bands got there start!! Thanks for the memories!!! 😀👍 love your videos!! And that punk rock hair salon you mentioned i got my hair cut and styled for my prom, it was a total 80s hair do but hey it was the 80's and they had a great reputation lol!! thought It was called glam rock salon but I could be wrong. 🤔😄

I was born in the valley. Went to school in Van Nuys and Sun Valley. My dad bought cars from Galpin Ford and I hung out at Northridge mall, Malibu Grand Prix and the Reseda and Northridge roller skating rink. I lived in the valley through the 70's and 80's. Early 90's I moved to Santa Clarita and settled in Castaic until I moved to Australia in 2001. LOVE the drive through memory lane :)

I lived there from 1984 till 2021. We moved to Northern California. But I love watching this to reminisce. I feel like I grew up in the valley. I lived there so long. I lived everywhere from North Hollywood to Reseda to North Hills to Porter Ranch, and a few other cities in between. Thank you for this video. 🙏🏻🥰
I don’t know if you know about the scene they filmed from Alpha Dog, the movie, at the corner of Nordhoff and Woodley. It was the papers ceiling, and they filmed it outside that bar in that strip mall. I lived about a mile from there in North Hills for 30 years. We moved there right after it changed from Sepulveda. By the time we left, Northridge was expanding into North Hills. They once filmed a scene up at the VA hospital for Grey’s Anatomy where there was an explosion and they had to put something on our door to let us know. I went and took pictures while they did it. I miss the valley. I’m going to watch all your videos. I love that you have saved all these other things. Your wife was smart to tell you to do this❣️

I used to bartend at Chuck Landis' Country Club in the mid 80's. I remember applying for the job in person and leaving an application. 3 days later a fellow by the name of Tim Landis knocked on my apartment door and hired me on the spot. When I asked him why he didn't just call me he said, "You didn't leave a phone number on your application". Still one of the most memorable jobs I ever had.

Naugle's, Pup n' Taco, Giamellas Subs, El Indio, Flooky's, El Torito, Mission Burrito! Gimme gimme gimme!!!! :))
And CAN'T forget The Burrito Factory (52 different kinds) up on Sherman way and Reseda I believe? Met the lead singer from P.I.L. (John Lydon) in there back in '85. The S.F.V. back then was an AMAZING place to grow up. Wish I could be riding in that car along side of ya. Cheers from Denver!

Great video. I was born in the Valley and spent my first two years there before moving to the west side, like Marina Del Rey and mostly Santa Monica, WLA, etc. But I still have family in the Valley and did movie back and forth in the 90s and early 2000s, either for college or just a change of pace. The Valley gets unfairly knocked by pretentious west siders and I never got that. The Valley has some really cool things about it. For one, you don't have anywhere near the traffic congestion because the roads are a lot wider. The Valley is dominated by a suburban vibe, but you do have all the urban amenities you could possibly want. My grandfather called Ventura Blvd "Restaurant Row" because of the incredible variety of restaurants. You could eat at a different place every night and never go to the same place twice if you didn't want to. The westside has NOTHING on the Valley so far as restaurants go. Also, the place is just not as pretentious. It's got more regular, down to earth people. The valley used to be thought of as a transitional place, where a couple would buy their starter home before selling it and moving to the west side. While that may have been the case for some the Valley is also a preferred destination for some. Yes, the Valley gets very hot. I was in Woodland Hills today and it was 110. But there's a new invention called air conditioning that helps you get through the day. Not such a bad place.

I wasn’t born in the valley but I moved to Reseda from the Bay Area when I turned 18. I moved in with some older cousins that were in a Heavy metal band all 4 of us living in a tiny studio surviving on microwave food. I had my first girlfriend there too. Wow, the Reseda theater brings back great memories. I think around 1968 I saw my first movie there, The Great Race. That's when I developed a crush on Natalie Wood. Many more movies to follow while I was in junior high school. My friend and I would go to Sav-On (later the Country Club) and load up on candy then go to the theater. What a blast we had! In 1972 our family watched the Poseidon Adventure at the Reseda theater. Strange, but that was the last time I saw a movie there. Later, before the theater closed, they began showing B-grade spanish language movies. Sure wish it would re-open.

About stuff shown in this video: I saw Molly Hatchet, Rory Gallagher at the Country Club. Across the street, a bit to the North on Canby was a music store called Valley Arts. That is where I bought my Ampeg Dan Armstrong guitar. Its a boarded up building now. I paid $400 for the guitar, circa 1974. There was also a record store next door. This is where I bought my first vinyl with my own earned money from working at the Jolly Roger at the Sherman Oaks mall you show in another video. It was something called HARVEST by Neil Young. You may have heard of it. HAHA. I worked at the Von's on Sherman Way, behind the seafood counter around 1986-87. If you shopped there, I may have waited on you. Also, there used to be a Newberry's in that center. My high school buddy was the meat manager at that Von's for quite some time. When I was high school age, the Reseda Theatre was open. That is where I saw many, many movies including the Jimi Hendrix film and I am certain GIMME SHELTER. Also in the neighborhood was a Lindberg Nutrition store. Remember the pink decor? That store on the southwest corner of Reseda and Sherman Way used to be a discount jeans store. There is a rather big parking lot that runs behind all those stores on Sherman Way. I was very familiar with that lot. It was where we would park when shopping in Reseda. It was a more vibrant community in the Seventies.

Kurt, great set of videos about SFV. I've watched them all and now I'm commenting on them one by one with what's relevant to my experience growing up there. I lived in Encino from '74-'84 (ages 4 to 14) and my family still lives there.
    1. My stomping grounds was more around Ventura Blvd. from Woodland Hills to Sherman Oaks (anywhere my RTD bus pass could take me but not too far from home), so I don't recognize the places you mentioned in this video, except the roller rink which I remember passing from time to time and wanting to go in, but never did.
    2. I thought that Miss Donuts place looked familiar. Had you not said so, I'd have tortured myself wondering where I'd seen it before.
    3. You used to frequent a liquor store to get Garbage Pail Kids. Oh, those were the days! I used to beg my mother to stop at a pharmacy that used to be on Ventura/Woodley to get me a couple packs of baseball cards because I'd blown my money with the ice cream man that parked outside our elementary school buying Wacky Packages cards, which at the time were 35 cents a pack.
    4. Yes, I remember Mervyn's. Great store - better than Kohl's.
Awesome video! I'm moving on to part 2.

Right next to the Reseda theater, on the corner of Reseda & Sherman way was a taco stand and Big Donut Drive-thru. The donut stand had one of those giant donuts displayed (very much like Randy's Donuts near LAX). After watching a movie my friends and I would grab a taco and donut. Both places were torn down and replaced with a gas station, sometime in the early 1970s I think.

Nice memories. I grew up in North Hollywood on Kittridge Street. Went to Coldwater Canyon Elementary, Madison Jr. High and Grant HS. I remember a lot of the places that you were talking about. I used to go ice skating Friday/Saturday nights at the May Co. on Laurel Canyon. But when the 1994 earthquake happened it got badly damaged and they tore it down. I think all the places I went to when growing up got torn down. It saddens me. The Valley is just not the same anymore. It is getting really bad now. My daughter lives in Woodland Hills and there are SO many homeless people just doing drugs in broad daylight and going to the bathroom right on the sidewalk. Absolutely disgusting. Also the Kmart on Sherman Way in N. Hollywood used to be a dairy farm with cows there. In the 60’s we would go there to get our milk.

The 99 Cent store in the Jon's parking lot used to be a Newberry's, such a rad store. Next door was a Thrifty's that is now a Goodwill, that 10 cent scoop ice cream (I think it was 10 Cents back in the 90's, I can't remember lol) was always refreshing after a long walk there. Record Trader was the best, found so many gems there that I still own. I used to ride my GT bike there all the time.

Grew up in Sun Valley: Roscoe and Laurel Canyon where the Mervin's was was my go to Blockbuster video store. Roscoe and Arleta, the dude at the gas station would sell us kids cigarettes for 25 cents. Sherman Way and Laurel Canyon (Game Dude) they still exist!! I use to buy and sell video games here all the time. I know all the spots, would love to converse with anyone who knows this area. Laurel Canyon never really recovered after the Northridge earthquake. North Hollywood shootout just down the street. Sherman Oaks Castle Park and batting cages. Burbank's Moonlight Roller rink. Cool channel dude! Good channel for me as I'm a fan of the 80's, shooting locations, and LA in general myself. I'm from Nor-Cal, San Jose, and it is funny how similar a lot of stuff is, for example I go by that exact same dude outside the car repair shop, I mean exact same, and he's no longer holding a muffler or tires up here either. Also, I remember The Wherehouse. I wonder if anyone in NYC for example ever heard of that store. Mervyn's, all of it. I lived across the street from the second Chuck E' Cheese's ever built- it was started by the same guy that founded Atari, and he was based here in Silicon Valley. Anyway, appreciate your channel and I can tell you are a real Cali/ LA kid, and you don't see too many of those on YT. Maybe one day I'll replicate this video for my area. Cheers

Dude, so glad I came across your channel. I saw some of your filming location vids of favorite films from my youth and man, I've always been curious about the San Fernando valley and there's not much footage around. So many of the skate punk bands I loved in the 90's are from there. I love that so many 80's coming-of-age movies were filmed in that area, but also several of the trashy exploitation and 80's sex comedy films were filmed there too... stuff you'd see on USA Up All Night like Lunch Wagon, Gimme an F, and H.O.T.S.
