- The hubs are only fitted temporarily as i need to have the car mobil and off the ramp, So you will see there is no rubber ball joint covers or shocks and nothing is fully tightened, Once i have the new discs & Calipers from the UK everything will be fitted, Checked and secured.
Hello Dave, yet again a video full of very useful information which has to be of value to anyone building a mini Cooper using the similar parts to the ones which you are using. It is looking great already so the finished motor should look awesome. Cheers Malcolm
Malcolm, Thanks i will try to show each step as we build the car back up, I am trying to learn to use imovie! Cheers Dave.
Attention to detail shows Dave. Looking great.
Martin, The devil is in the detail a very true saying, It is such a joy and great feeling of accomplishment when you take something that‘s passed it‘s best and would end up on yet another mountain of scrap. Take care Dave.
Looking better every day Dave!
Sean, Slow but sure, The downside is i don‘t have enough parts to do too much more and the engine will be another two weeks before i get to install it back in the car, The up side is i have no shortage of restorations projects, Cheers Dave.
davejaguar66 lol that's very true Dave. Talking about upsides I think I'll be ordering a jig like you mentioned
Sean, Save some money and make one yourself it‘s very theraputic welding heavy gauge metal and a damn site easier than 22 gauge. The first time you turn the shell over on the jig you will be made up! Cheers Dave.
I did think about making one Dave but in all honesty I can't be bothered so have decided to buy one. On the upside I can sell it on when I'm finished and recoup some of my money.
I see what you mean about the upper bump stop. Better getting it done earlier on. Looks like a good tool for knocking in the bearings. Think i will need to add it to my collection. Good video and good advice.thanks
It‘s the nut that is the problem as theres no room to get a spanner in! The alloy taper kit has been used so much on projects it‘s paid for self many times over, Mind you i did buy it some years ago so what they cost now i don‘t know, Cheers Dave.
I have ordered bump stops as there were none on the old subframe. Im glad you mentioned it now before I realised further down the line. At least the LH side will go on before the cone goes in.
Sorry mate! once again it just turned out we where both doing the same job on nearly the same day! This is what i like about the comments on youtube it can save a lot of hassle, When i restored the E Type i had so many tips & advice it saved me countless hour of extra work, I have done many different jobs on a Minis over the years but never fully restored one till now! This is why i watch all your and the other guys videos. Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave. The car is looking amazing, and I hate to be a dissenter but I have to voice this.... I personally think the stainless steel trim parts would be better in the same black as the roof and arches. Sorry!
Jon, To be honest i am not that impressed with the way the SS mouldings have been made, The great thing is there easy to change and done in black sounds good! I may take an old one and paint and see how it looks, Cheers Dave.
Well, you can easily wait and see how it all looks with the wheels (I would also like to see that before judging)... let's see - loving the videos still :)
Jon Stout would the rubber sill trim not also act as Seam trim and less to rust and will bend to the shape instead of ss?
Thanks for the detailed look around the car. Looking amazing. Also thanks for sharing the tips and tricks. Still learning all of this stuff so it really helps. If I'm not mistaken, in another video, I saw coil spring suspension but in this car you are using rubber cones. What are your thoughts on one over the other?
Lindsay, NO it was always going to have rubber cones but with the Hi Lo trumpets as you can adjust the ride height.
Max my Mini Guru said the coils can come out of there seat if the suspension full upm or down as there not attached to the subframes, The cones seem to jam on to the seat base much better, Cheers Dave.
Cheers for that mate. Going to stick with cones on my mini then, even if it means swapping them out over time. Appreciate the feedback. Good luck with the build!
Hi Dave. Was just wondering about testing the car with emission after remove the injection and fitting carbs. I have a 98 MPI and thought about it many times as I kept having the same fault intermitenly on the car. End up as one of the pins on one of the plugs had spread slightly, not enough to for the fault to be there all the time. Spent weeks on it to find it. I was told u can't get a carb setup to run as Eco as an injection car with and ecu. Are the NCT MOT not as tight over there. Just wondering.
Cheers Stephen
Stephen, The MOT or TÜF in Austria is much more involved than the UK, As long as you have the emissions within the range there is no issue as the models where made with Carbs & SPI, Here the main problem is with any Welding and changing the engine or brakes from non original, You then need a qualified engineers report. Cheers Dave.
It doesn't look like you have the brake and fuel lines in. My understanding is its almost impossible to install them with the subframes in situ. Especially the rear frame. Unless you plan to drop them again.
Stewart, Well spotted! It is far better to install the fuel and brake lines first but with having a ramp it makes the job
a lot easier. There are indents in the heel board that you can use to get the fuel line in and now there is only one line not three as i am changing to a 1-3/4 Carb from the SPI system. Cheers Dave.
Hi David . Verty sound advice . Sorry to be sounding stupid . You take the play out of the ball joint with the shims is there a factory setting for it .
Perhaps just me not listening well enough.
Cheers
Pete.
Pete, Second hand from Max but sound never the less! The factory setting is just the correct amount of shims so the play in the ball & socket is smooth and not to loose or tight! Cheers Dave.
Thanks Dave . Thought that might be the case.
