This is the list of the top 5 greatest chess sacrifices of all time. Sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy as people give up material and come out with the victory.
Crazy thing is, black couldn't even retreat after the first rook because literally every space was covered. His best move was to go back to A7 and he'd have gotten a Rook+Bishop for a Queen.
Watched the video, thought, "hey ! That's great ! Have to do that !" Next game, I graciously sacrificed my queen, then my opponent took my rooks, and my knights, and I was utterly defeated... =( Maybe I should watch again. Seems I missed something.
Wow. I always kind of like the Lasker game for some reason. Just the way he got his opponents King all the way from one end of the board to the other,AND could have mated him by castleing. All brilliant games. Epic sacrafices, great video.
+Anthony Kernich I put Bobby Fischer's game into a computer and had it calculate the next best move, and it gave the exact move that Bobby Fischer made. The same is true for the #1 game on the list. I didn't try the rest but I assume they would all be played the same by a computer. Computers aren't designed to find the best move possible to keep material; they're designed to find the best move possible to win.
I'm no chess pro or anything, but thanks to this video I now have 2 queen sacrifices for the checkmate in my history :) This was a very influential video, thank you for posting this!
Amazing sacrifices! In the Lasker-Thomas game Lasker sees his opportunity many moves ahead, but he did not find the quickest mate! When he played Be2+, he could rather have castled kingside - and no matter what black does the next move is Nh2#
These classic games (and many others) are eternally awe-inspiring, and yet I often find many contemporary games to be just as interesting. Chess is alive. The best move, the best sacrifice, the best game, hasn't been played yet.
giorgi meskhi thats why you never become GM,hahahah, when Knight takes f6,pawn take and Q holds on h7!!Did you think that lasker couldnt find mate in 2 and found mat in 12?hahahah
@@MattrickBT after castling bishops takes pawn h2 attacking king with backup queen. Then pawn from g2 and f2 are moved to clear space for king and blocking bishop
Thanks for an amazing collection of undeniably beautiful games , although at the beginning of the last game of Esteban, it was foretold that the opponents were amateurs and that they would be embarrassed by the Grand-master, I got too excited and hoped for a picturesque game, but it was much more beyond that, nothing that a simple human being could ever construct in a game, yet if you think that your imagination is infinite, you got to remember that some infinities are bigger that other infinities!
I think Ben Finegold showed a video of a new game of Ding Liren in which he sacked a piece (I believe it was a knight?) and chased the opponents king for like 25 moves and finally mated him. In a modern super-GM game!
MikkeHJ As MikkeHJ here playing the black person really understands his skill set and uses his superior athletic ability to swing the game in his favor. Sacrificing his well being (incarceration) to gobble up all that material and earns a spot of #0 on the top 5 greatest chess sacrifices.
I am a very amateur Chess player who just loves to watch your videos. Keep up the great work. I know they make me a better player, I now consistently beat my Chess partner using moves that I have set up earlier and I use great sacrifices to reach my goal. Are there many great woman Chess players that you have done videos on?
In the last game, white realized he could pull off a boden mate if the queen was not close to the king to defend, so he deflected her by giving up both rooks. Once you see the boden mate its not that hard to find it, but still its incredibly creative to deflect the queen by sacrifcing both rooks^^ loved it
Tal could have featured in all five of these! Nice list, though. Perhaps I'd have altered one or two, but that's just personal preference. Kudos on the great list.
On the Lasker sacrifice, I've read that he didn't castle, that he actually played Kd2, because it was more "artistic" a mate from a tower very far away on the other corner of the board.
No, Be6 wasn't brilliant, F. was gambling, and B. fell for it because he underestimated the 13 y.o. boy. So had I, in his place; however, with another opponent, e.g. M. Tal, I had simply played Qxc3 instead of Bxb6, and White would have had a fairly easy win. But Tal, though being a gambler himself, wouldn't have taken THAT risk ;-)
Sacrificing your king to save your pawn
+Dejomony Lemon (Replies with bad joke about X political party)
haha funny
Dejomony Lemon Lmao,nice joke xD
this is disney shit right here
leonidas
Lol "I gave up both of my rooks. Now's a good time to give up my queen." xD
Charles C ikr XD
Charles C I would never have seen that coming
That was a very good time.

BaufenBeast, nope, it would continue: 1...Kd2, Qa6. 2. Bxa6, bxa6?? 3. Qxc6# checkmate
I love seeing a pawn in a checkmate, it always is a great fuck you.
Caesar Seriona
Caesar Seriona well, someone checkmated someone with ONLY pawns.
Koye Zheng impossible
Koye Zheng lol I would quit chess forever.

- 4:09 Can you checkmate while you castle?
- Hold my beer.
Number One was amazing the way he just chucked away his best pieces and the other guy fell for it and was checkmated in three moves. Classic
Ed Lasker Pretty much kidnapped the king. haha
That's one of the best Chess videos I watched, the #1 in the list is really really impressive!
Enjoyed this- TY for sharing these gems.
Wow. I always kind of like the Lasker game for some reason. Just the way he got his opponents King all the way from one end of the board to the other,AND could have mated him by castleing.
All brilliant games. Epic sacrafices, great video.
Top Chess commentator online -- period! thank you very much. I loved the Carlsen v Anand commentary and explanations.
This kind of video is the absolute best! Please make more! I've been following your channel for years and congratulations on the amazing work!
GOOD GOD the king in #2 just got taken behind enemy lines and held hostage! This is the actual nastiest set of chess games I have ever seen.
That was great! Thanks for posting.
Brilliant stuff, thanks for these :)
This is incredible! Thanks for making these great videos
Pity there aren't a lot of sacrifices nowadays because everyone wants to play like a computer and keep material
***** True!
+Anthony Kernich well because now they think that more pieces=more winning chance
+Anthony Kernich I gave up both my rooks, my queen , 2 bishops, a knight and also 3 pawns. Now I didn't win, but I came fairly close.
+Clive Ellis Second place isn't that bad.....
Enjoyed this video a lot...thanks
Thank you for these beautiful games.

Gotta say, O-O-O# seems like a fantastic way to win.

Amazing sacrifices
great video!
Wow the number 2 was beautiful
Number one is so nasty lol great video !!
the 2nd one is pretty funny, chased his king from row 8 to row 1 lol good stuff
lol #4 is hilariously awesome
number 3 should be 1 - that was just insane.
I'm a fan of #4, it's just hilariously amazing.
FlamnTornado n4 can be won also by Knight takes on F6 Check. an next is Queen takes on H7 check mate. i see black was very poor with defense
giorgi meskhi thats why you never become GM,hahahah, when Knight takes f6,pawn take and Q holds on h7!!Did you think that lasker couldnt find mate in 2 and found mat in 12?hahahah
yes #3 should definitely be #1
The last two: awesome!
fantastic action play in in last game
It's good...More sac vids would be cool!
wow...omgg....that final one was unbelievable
Really cool when in puzzle Two
how the hell did the position in #3 even happen
I was wondering the same thing? How did that black bishop get down there?
@@MattrickBT after castling bishops takes pawn h2 attacking king with backup queen. Then pawn from g2 and f2 are moved to clear space for king and blocking bishop
@@alwaysno.1602 I had to look up the game to see how it happened. Makes sense on context.
yo! number one im impressed
#2 One of the most famous games ever played "A Night at the Opera"
Devastating last game 🤗
i saw the last one, the others all blew my mind
Ow my god, that last one is soo nice!!
the 2nd sacrifice was awesome!
Thank you the chesswebsite I studied this and many other of your videos to prepare for my tournament and I won,
4th sacrifice has so much style.
Those are all so impressive to my simple mind.

Nice one

castling into checkmate is so epic
these videos are great i have never seen a game like this
Last one was crazy
The last one is ingenious
that last one is cold as ice
I was literally eating a bag of popcorn when I saw this video
awesome
Thanks
That Lasker game has to be the longest king walk ever.
I think Ben Finegold showed a video of a new game of Ding Liren in which he sacked a piece (I believe it was a knight?) and chased the opponents king for like 25 moves and finally mated him.
In a modern super-GM game!
Also check out (no pun intended) Kasparov's 'immortal' game against Topalov.
Number 2 was so great.
Wicked
What would you do if you were black?
I would take the chess pieces and get the hell out of there..
Lol, very clever
MikkeHJ As MikkeHJ here playing the black person really understands his skill set and uses his superior athletic ability to swing the game in his favor. Sacrificing his well being (incarceration) to gobble up all that material and earns a spot of #0 on the top 5 greatest chess sacrifices.
@@0Clappy lol the cleverness
last sf - the best!

the last number one, an fastactic sacrifice, woww,,
Cool video. My favorite way to checkmate someone is with pawn
now that he sacrificed both of his rooks, he thought it's the right time to sacrifice the queen ;)
Wow.....wow....wow
Number 4 was the only checkmate that I've seen come from a castle.
And the best
i have never seen king sacrifise, can you show an example?
You see it every time you lose
*facepalm*
These 5 are king sacrifice for material
Damn!!! I envy them.
In the last game, white realized he could pull off a boden mate if the queen was not close to the king to defend, so he deflected her by giving up both rooks. Once you see the boden mate its not that hard to find it, but still its incredibly creative to deflect the queen by sacrifcing both rooks^^ loved it
That number 4 was hilarious.
What the !!!! I really wanna get to that level so bad. I don't know if I can though. These guys are natural!!
Tal could have featured in all five of these! Nice list, though. Perhaps I'd have altered one or two, but that's just personal preference. Kudos on the great list.
This secound I know very good game very nice! :D
I like #4. Sacrificing his queen & then forcing opponents king from g8 to g1 to mate by castling. genius!
On the Lasker sacrifice, I've read that he didn't castle, that he actually played Kd2, because it was more "artistic" a mate from a tower very far away on the other corner of the board.
Mind=blown
Bobby fisher was one of the greatest chess players!! I love this first sacrifice!! BE6 is simply brilliant. Love this video
