Diddy Kong Racing technically got a spiritual sequel called Mickey's Speedway USA. It's not as fun to play, but still holds up better than Mario Kart 64.
I used to have that, mario kart 64, and crash team racing as a kid. I didn't even know about diddy kong racing until the 2010s lol. It looks fun. I hope they re-release it on the switch like their doing with banjo-kazooie. It needs a remake. I love kart racing games. It's my favorite genre.
The nostalgia I felt watching this. To this day whenever Rare comes up in conversations, especially the N64 era. I mention how much I loved this game against my family. Missiles weren't a downgrade for me, I loved swiftly punishing a specific cousin the instant he passed me. Every. Time.(At least try) Yet what does still drive me up a wall is when others assume I only liked Conker thanks to a later title. I was easily made hyper as a kid and such characters drew me in easily, at least high energy. That and looking back it seems I liked balanced racers the most in the kart games I played.
I vaguely remember playing this game in a dentist’s waiting room when I was much younger. Naturally, I wasn’t very good at it. But there was also a Ratchet & Clank game and a SEGA crossover tennis game, both of which I was surprisingly a little bit better at. Though admittedly, the former was with some help from my older sister.
I've kind of had the same experience but in the dentist's waiting room I've went to (its in Guntersville AL, if you're wondering) had different games, I can put all the ones I remember in a list here: (Also most of these were PS2 stuff) Crash Twinsanity (played this one the most) The Spongebob SquarePants Movie Game (Maybe BFBB I can't tell if I'm misremembering things) A Lego Batman game (probably the first one) Crash Nitro Kart (but only once was it actually available to play)
the first time i ever played ocarina of time was in the waiting room of a doctors office it was the beginning in the kokiri forest and i had no clue what to do
This game is absolutely incredible and would be a contender for my favorite kart racing game of all time if it weren't for the fact that it loses a bit of replay value upon being mastered. I recently competed with a friend of mine to race through the adventure mode and in-practicing for that race, I ended up mastering the mechanics and sadly don't have much reason to replay it unless I were to get into speedrunning (which I very well might). Great review! Always happy to see this game get the love it deserves
Oh god this actually brings up a hilarious memory of mine. About 19 years ago, back when Giant Eagle stores had the Eagle’s Nest (basically a small daycare for grown-ups to leave their kids while they do their shopping) I remember watching a kid playing Diddy Kong Racing and as it so happens he was racing WizPig. There was a broken tv screen soon after…
@Brandon Wray It has you playing as cartoon children with big heads and no arms and legs, and is a brutally hard game that requires mastery in order to fully beat all tournaments. It also has some of the best visuals you'll find in a PS1 game, and the soundtrack is solid. Mixed with great control, a great sense of speed, and fun level design, and you have a high quality kart racer that's fun to come back to.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 If you want to see an even more impressive racing game on the PS1 (and a bit obscure i think) check it out the port of Hydro Thunder from the arcade. Is a miracle seeing the console running something like that. The controls were good and you have to know the shortcuts to win the races. Is not a kart racer however, but it is one of those games that is easy to pick up and a bit hard to master and i just wanted to recommend it.
I loved Diddy Kong Racing growing up. I remember doing the co-op adventure mode with my siblings & even use the in-game cheat modes to add stuff like co-op, making the characters big & small & plenty more. One of my favourite N64 games.
I got Diddy Kong Racing when it was only a few months old; I was 10 and finished it at 11 (100 percenting the game took a long time, T.T. times were hard as hell for me). I remember the game pretty vividly for being so long ago, and the Frosty Village song made me smile from the nostalgia. Wizpig 1 was absolutely insane. About as difficult as you can be without simply being impossible. I was stuck on him for months and my number of attempts probably reached the triple digits. I wasn't even excited when I finally beat him, I was dumbstruck. The reward was well worth it, though - I loved the "false ending" thing Rare was fond of during the N64 days like with Banjo-Kazooie. T.T. was that good? Huh. I remember being completely disappointed with him since I found him so difficult to control; Pipsy and Tiptup were the only characters I ever used due to their tight controls. Since I was a dumb little 11 year old, though, I was probably wrong. I'm still disappointed Donkey Kong Racing was never released. E3 2001 was the first one I ever followed and I thought the game looked cool.
My siblings and I played DKR so much we wore out the battery on cartridge. I believe this was game we got on our N64 along with Mario Kart 64. I have so many fond memories of it, and going back to play it would be amazing. It holds up extremely well to age, much like Banjo-Kazooie does, and I would love to see it get a proper sequel. Seeing someone else with the same opinions and memories as I did brings a good smile to my face :D
My favorite kart racer ever! I just find it so odd that practically no one else aside from Naughty Dog with CTR attempted the racing adventure formula. Here's hoping we get a sequel on the switch one day. On another note, I'll never forgive my brother for selling it for clubbing money 😂
Now this is my childhood game and my absolute favorite game on the N64! I remember so many fond memories of discovering all the little secrets as a kid using my man Tiptup. I never managed to beat first Wizpig as a kid since I never figured out the secret boost technique, but that never hampered my enjoyment of the game. If this somehow makes it onto the N64 NSO Online, then my cchildhood will be complete and I'll be happy! (Also if Nintendo lowers the price as $50 a year is way too steep.)
I only ever played the DS version of this game, and I quite enjoyed it. Granted, in retrospect some of its gimmicks weren't that great, but it was still a good time.
i 100% dkr ds in normal adventure mode, and adventure 2 mode. i even managed to unlock T.T. but i wasn't a big fan of the controls for getting a rocket start boost. it was seriously awkward blowing into the mic on the bus just to get the hovercrafts moving
One of my favorite kart games, at the time i already played Mario Kart and CTR and loved both, but even then this game still suprised my with the vehicles, ost and replayability, i remember playing the battle games a lot with friends, good times. Nice summary of the game.
Diddy Kong Racing's soundtrack passes what I like to call the 'Immaculate Vibe Test.' Where you can put it's music over *Anything* and it would fit. ESPECIALLY Pirate Lagoon
I know that a lot of people like to compare Diddy Kong Racing to Mario Kart 64, but if you really think about it Crash Team Racing has way more in common with Diddy Kong Racing then Mario Kart 64. Think about it both Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing have a story involving some alien. (Though calling Diddy Kong Racing DS a remake is a whee bit of a stretch.)
Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racer & Crash Team Racing were just the 3 bastions of my childhood kart racers. Despite never being alive when these games came out, I was fortunate enough that my dad still had his Nintendo 64 & PlayStation and I will always be thankful for that. All 3 of those games gave me such fond memories!
The kart racing genre is my favorite. I love pac-man world rally, mario kart wii, mysims racing, sonic & sega all-stars racing transformed, crash team racing nitro fueled, and nickelodeon kart racers 2. It would be cool if nintendo and rare did come together to give us all a remake of diddy kong racing. I didn't play it as a kid since I didn't know it existed till I got older.
Such a good game back in the day. I remember 100%'ing the game and then doing the same in mirror mode which was 10x more difficult. Freaking Windmill Plains was the worst.
Funny how Conker would go from kid-friendly character to the foul-mouthed, perverted, drunk lead protagonist of one the most beloved M-rated titles on the N64.
I remember having trouble on the torch minigame in the DS version mostly from my original DS having a busted mic. Didn't finish it until I got the DSi.
As a kid in the early 2000s, I didn't know about the speed boost trick of not holding the A button when touching it so I had to relay on Wizpig kicking my player in order to beat him. After 100s of failed attempts, managed to beat him. As a grown adult I'd love to see if it as difficult as I remember.
After unlocking Future funland it always got to me that it didn't have a multi player battle or challenge stage because when you looked at the level select screen it looked like there was something there and I totally spent months looking for the key to unlock it!! : D I wish they would make another one as it was ever so fun to play in adventure or together with friends! ^-^
I love diddy kong racing, and your video is great, i'm subscribing right now, can't wait to see the other videos that you made talking about other games.
I somewhat recently finally played through all of adventure mode for the first time, and I actually found the second Wizpig race much harder than the first. I didn't think the first one was very hard at all, it only took me a few attempts, while the second took quite some time. The car is the easiest vehicle to handle, and all that race demands of you is to hit all the boosts, it's really not a hard track, so it doesn't take much time to get a good feel for it. While the second race, there a lot more to consider with the plane, elevation is now a factor, there's more room for error, especially since you'll actually have obstacles to avoid. Sure you can get powerups, but I think the first race not having them made it easier just because it made it simple. Just hit all the boosts and you're good.
I think I read somewhere once that another reason Diddy Kong Racing sold so fast was because of a free toy that came with a purchase of the game before the first month of release was over. I could be wrong, I read that back when the DS version came out after all.
The idea that the tiger wrote Diddy a letter is cute. I always thought it would be cool to expand on the 64 games world and make them exist in Same universe. For example I always felt banjo tooie and DK64 feel like same universe anyways. So a universe with DK and their whole world + banjo Kazooie &world + conker+ mario and yoshi + timber + crash and you have an awesome universe with plenty of cool heros, villains and ideas to use for a story.. could also do infinite number of team ups
I'd also like to explore mario world more in 3D. Mario 64 takes place in the castle, odyssey let's you visit the grounds of the castle again. But most the levels in those games are paintings or different worlds. I want to explore the world outside that castle, the world mario lives in and the first 4 games take place in. With Koopas and all that, even the Rex. But a real open world
How to beat bubbler easily. Get 3 rocket powerups. Go to town on him. only stopping once you're down to 1 rocket, then get another rocket to restock and repeat.
This was easily one of my favorite games growing up. I liked it more than MK64, but that's in part because I played games by myself more often and DKR has a more robust single-player game (I would say MK64 is better as a multiplayer game). And yes, the soundtrack is still one of my favorites. Also, the remake absolutely sucks.
I mean even Peach's Castle is sectioned off by the lobby, basement, and upstairs by beating each Bowser fight, which you enter by getting a certain amount of stars per Bowser stage
True, but at the same time, CTR's hub world also has its various areas sectioned off by beating each boss, which you enter by getting a certain amount of trophies (and just like Mario 64, you get a key from said boss to unlock the next section). So in a roundabout way, it still works.
Holy moly, I just realized that the alligator guy is the design of the kritters from DK64! Either that was a coincidence or Rare was thinking farther ahead than we thought.
MAn I remember Diddy Kong Racing. It was one of the first games I got on the N64, and is still one of my favorite racing games to this day. The DS remake was ok but not as good as the original. I hope this game gets ported to the virtual consoles someday because I'd love to play it again.
Diddy Kong Racing to me is one of the best Racers because of how they do things. Adventure Mode, the tier system for items, the only other game that does Diddy Kong Racing better especially with the vehicles? Is Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed. Literally just does the vehicle swap on the Fly.
Every person says the Wizpig 1 fight is harder. That may be true in the original (idk never played), but in DS Wizpig 2 has those lasers that always hit you after you pass the giant head.
I will keep saying this until the end of time, I love Diddy Kong Racing and consider it my all-time favourite game. Also I somehow never knew about that shortcut in Frosty Village until now Also also, I would disagree about Wizpig being the hardest part. Wizpig is very hard, but by that point I already knew about the trick and was able to beat him after a few attempts. Bubbler 2 and Smokey 2 however..........
Ah yes the humble beginning of a certain bear who later teamed up with a Breegul to save his sister from am5 evil witch had many years, hibernated until there grand return for Super Smash Bros Ultimates, and Conker...well the least say the better unless you want to get the alternative universeceere Conker did return On form *hint hint* while Banjo and Kazooie didn't from a certain "remix"!
If you want a really good kart racer that you've probably never heard of, might i suggest Wacky Races starring Dastardly and Muttley for the PS2? (yes the title really is that long.) (also something that i just noticed at 10:11, is that a phoenix wright refrence?)
I actually reviewed the Dreamcast version of that game last year, funny enough! It was part of my Obscure Kart Racers 2 video, and yeah, I really enjoyed it. Also, I wasn't making any intentional references there, so that was just a coincidence.
@@BenjaMage ah, well considering how much the PS2 version changes, i would love to get someone's who's already played the dreamcast version's opinion on it, because it's not the most common thing to come by.
@@HammMann I just now realized you were asking about the avatar pose being an Ace Attorney reference, rather than what was being said. My bad. XD To properly answer your question, yes, Phoenix Wright's pose was used as a reference for when my channel artist made this one.
I mean when I played Diddy Kong Racing 🏁 on the DS or 2DS I played Tip-Top or Pipsy in boss race without any real trouble though it took a while but I made it through in the end
I swear my copy of the game was borked, because I had found every possible balloon and did every course I could, but I was ONE off from doing the final course to re-Race the Dragon...
Honestly, Unless you could truly dedicate a full video for it, You could put DKR DS in a video about bad remakes/remakes you really don't like, I think that would be a great vid coming from you
As someone who only played the DS version, I'd absolutely love to hear you talk about the difference between the two. I've got some very fond memories of the version I played, so I'm curious what I missed out on.

Step 2: Beat the game
I like to imagine that the BS of beating wizpig drove him to lose his innocence and go down the path he does in bad fur day

Damn, I can't believe that I died at BOTH times you did the Adventure Two thing lol
diddy kong racing is so good i still have my n64 copy and i liked playing the ds version whenever i went somewhere
I have never even played this game but I love your videos and I don’t regret watching keep up the hard work
I think I read somewhere once that another reason Diddy Kong Racing sold so fast was because of a free toy that came with a purchase of the game before the first month of release was over. I could be wrong, I read that back when the DS version came out after all.
22:43:.....WHAT!? THAT WAS A THING!? HOW IS ANYONE SUPPOSED TO PLAY THAT!?
8:34 Wow this makes real sense a hovercraft on lava.
2 things:
1. I had never known that tt was playable!
2. Its funny to find someone praising the dino egg challenge. My family never played it XD
Honestly story with games like these. Interesting
That intro is so fitting.
So this game was almost a prototype for ctr. It brought I. The rough ideas that ctr would master
Wizpig: You can't beat me!
Pigma from Starfox: I got a better ship!
That was a joke from cjszero01's playthrough of Diddy Kong Racing.
The F**ing silver coin challenge in jungle falls still gives me war level PTSD to this day.
Great video really enjoyed it!
That's fair
I feel you man my first game was a cart racer in the form of Mario Kart Wii.
Fun Fact: Tricky the Triceratops is from Star Fox.
Holy moly, I just realized that the alligator guy is the design of the kritters from DK64!
Either that was a coincidence or Rare was thinking farther ahead than we thought.
Going off what I've read, Krunch's design was intentionally re-purposed for the Kritters in DK64.
Where have I heard the Pirate Lagoon theme before...?
MAn I remember Diddy Kong Racing. It was one of the first games I got on the N64, and is still one of my favorite racing games to this day. The DS remake was ok but not as good as the original. I hope this game gets ported to the virtual consoles someday because I'd love to play it again.
Dude this is provost the funnest video you made the jokes are the best
Diddy Kong Racing to me is one of the best Racers because of how they do things. Adventure Mode, the tier system for items, the only other game that does Diddy Kong Racing better especially with the vehicles? Is Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed. Literally just does the vehicle swap on the Fly.
I had no clue that pirate lagoon was one of those songs people use in meme videos and I thought it was hilarious
Every person says the Wizpig 1 fight is harder. That may be true in the original (idk never played), but in DS Wizpig 2 has those lasers that always hit you after you pass the giant head.
That joke at 0:00 is jus-
*_CHEIFS KISS INTENSIFIES_*
I will keep saying this until the end of time, I love Diddy Kong Racing and consider it my all-time favourite game.
Also I somehow never knew about that shortcut in Frosty Village until now
Also also, I would disagree about Wizpig being the hardest part. Wizpig is very hard, but by that point I already knew about the trick and was able to beat him after a few attempts.
Bubbler 2 and Smokey 2 however..........
Thank the Elder Gods I beaten Wispig in Diddy Kong Racing 🏁 granted that was on the 2DS but still I Triumph
Thanks for the memories ☺️
Good video! Shame you didn't address how to unlock Drumstick though, despite showing him in your footage...I always thought was a very odd secret.
Nice vid. But I felt like Wizpig 2, was way harder for me, lol. Maybe I'm just bad on the plane.
Love that intro
If you want a really good kart racer that you've probably never heard of, might i suggest Wacky Races starring Dastardly and Muttley for the PS2? (yes the title really is that long.)
(also something that i just noticed at 10:11, is that a phoenix wright refrence?)
My bad. XD
To properly answer your question, yes, Phoenix Wright's pose was used as a reference for when my channel artist made this one.
@@BenjaMage Guess it's a good thing i picked up on it, right?
Opening of video: Oh.. Oh.... Oh memories...
09:34 *Me beating (at least to the first Wizpig race) everything with Pipsy)
"Hehehe yeeeeah never would do that^^"
It's too bad Kazooie wasn't in it with Banjo. He even has his backpack!
I might be able to play California Games for my Nintendo Entertainment System
If you think Kitty Kong Racing is a funny mispronunciation autocorrect turned Donkey Kong Country into Donkey Long country
