I found simply using a watering can and letting the water sit for a bit the tar will turn a grey color and scrape right up. We tried sanding first and that would've taken forever with the amount of flooring we had to do. Plus the mess 😝 seriously yall sometimes it's the simplest things 🤷🏼♀️ We restored 2500sqft of original hardwood floor in a 1900's building with a watering can and scraper ❤
Pouring water on wood floors is really not recommended though
I have tar paper as underlayment for linoleum tiles we'd like to remove prior to refinishing the doug fir floors underneath. I can attest to the difficulty of removing this paper. Those who get it up w/ diet coke (which we tried) congrats. To you who made quick work of it with steaming it off, kudos (we used a steamer and a scraper blade, come on over and finish the job). 1800 watt heat gun w/ scraper works. (How's your knees and back?). Chemicals? (*LOL). I'll look into this tool but take certain precautions like having the paper tested prior to stirring things up. There is no one size fits all answer for removing this tough underlayment and still preserving the wood beneath. The only thing that can be said with certainty is, there will always be "experts" who are long on advice and short on understanding. Thanks for the video!

For everyone saying this is definitely asbestos… not necessarily. I found the same stuff in a house this old, and thinking it was asbestos, had it tested. It contained 0% asbestos. So just make sure you test, then proceed accordingly.
You are either lying, extreamly lucky or the Lab that was used was wrong, 99% of this black mastic glue and felt back tile contained asbestose all the way into the 80s.

this is the whole reason I wrote the comment, all of you people posting are just trying to be finger waging karens. I know full well that most of the stuff has asbestos, but not all of it does. I wrote in my original post to get it tested.

Yup. We have this flooring in our house and had a piece of it tested. 0% asbestos. So asbestos-free flooring of this type does exist. The stuff is IMPOSSIBLE to get off, though. We've tried everything. Heat gun? Laughable. Scouring pads? Nope.
Love your tips and video. As a female though I couldn't handled the weight of a big sander and found that a wall paper steamer will remove the tar paper and glue with a wide hand scraper. The steamer also kept the fiber (asbestos concern) from floating in the air. I appreciate your video though. These old floors are worth rescuing but certainly are a labor of love.
I agree, whatever works for you is the best method. This happened to be my preffered method, but i could see that the steamer method would be better for some. Especially if your mastic contains asbestos. Labor of love is a great way to describe it! :)

Thankyou for the post. Very informative for DIYers. I've been in the floor refinishing trade for over 40 years and come across this scenario all the time. Once all the linoleum has been pulled back, you're left with black tar adhesive. At this stage, it's time to use a professional, 240 volt belt sander with 16 grit paper. "Rocks on Cloth". Sander is used on a 45% angle first, and all the adheshive is ripped up, goes into the dust bag, and not scattered about. A two stage, perpindicular, 45% sanding process clears the floor of all adhesive, and creates a level playing field before "with the grain" sanding can begin. The machine that you rented is excellent, but we use the same, hooked to a vacuum, and is only used for fine screening of the floor after all major drum/belt sanding is finished. Unfortunately, a professional 240 volt drum/belt sander is not available at rental outlets for obvious reasons. Kudos to you for having the patience in restoring your wood floors, and I'm sure that the end result was spectaculor! You've got a new floor, and increased the value of your home. Cool!

Jerry, If you take a look at the part of the video where i tip up the sander so you can see the attachment underneath you will see it is designed for what i am using it for and it is super heavy duty, not fine mesh. I think you are right though, the 16 grit sandpaper method might be a better choice for some people. I was really happy with the method i used, and it turned out great, but everyone has different needs in their projects. Thanks for your comments!
I would bet that my method would work for the vinyl glue. if you have concrete underneath the vinyl then they have a similar tool you can rent at home depot to remove old adhesives from concrete. Good luck!
Hey Jerry I was just about to post what you just said I've been doing this for coming up 50 years now and I'll bet you were referring to a Hummel. . If that is your machine of choice Hummel has an excellent maintenance and repair program that shows how to trouble shoot and adjust the machine. When I went through the NWFA certification they had a Hummel tech as a bonus come and run a 2 day seminar which was great. It was well worth the money and time. I 'll bet also you have about eleventeen kinds of 3 and 4 prong 240 volt plugs. It sure would be great if they would use one standard size plug and in every new house with wood floors (REAL WOOD) it would be code to install a standard wood floor guy 3 prong plug in the laundry room 3 feet off the floor not behind a dryer This trade is not easy but very rewarding to see a smile on a home owner's face when they look at a 100 yr old floor restored to what it looked like when the house was first built. One advantage we have as trades men is no DAMN computer is going to come out and replace us. I tell people all the time this is more of an art than a trade.. Maybe some day they will make a sander with sand, light sand, and finish sand push buttons but they will still need some one to carry it in the house and plug it in. Have a great day..
The lining felt and linoleum were laid with linoleum paste. Wet the the linoleum backing as pull the top of top of the linoleum. Wet the linoleum backing with soapy water. Wait about an hour and a half the water melt the dark linoleum paste. It will scrape right up with a three inch putty knife.

How long did this take? And what did you use? I have a house built in 1840 with cheap flooring glued onto the original hardwood flooring... Trying to bring the hardwood floor back. Any and all help would be appreciated
I would highly suggest wearing a respirator. I understand asbestos was incorporated into many types of linoleum. I used the same tool while removing the mastic glue from linoleum in my basement. You can see dust particles in this guys video. Yes the blades will hardly wear while shaving wood. Concrete, which is what this tool is for, will wear those diamond blades. Back and forth is the correct motion.
they do have concrete versions of this tool but the one I bought was designed specifically for hardwood floors.

I used a walk behind floor stripper and took the mastic layer down as far as I could get then I sprayed the floors with a 1 vinagor to 4 water and let it sit for 15 minutes then take the walk behind stripper and it comes up very easily. I tried the method this guy is using and it was a much longer process and I could see it scratching the floor up something terrible

As a PSA announcement, NEVER-EVER sand off Mastic tar on a house this old. The 1960s was the height of asbestos use in construction. If Mastic tar has asbestos in it, then it could contain between 15% to 85% asbestos. In the video you can see that there are fine particles in the air. He clearly does not have good safety precautions. Also the door is shut!!!!!!!!!

I used a buffer like that in the Navy everyday! I'm sure it will all come back to me very easily! I just have to see if I can find one around here because I have this very issue. I have been trying to scrape and I just cannot do this floor by myself scraping like that. I need to try to rent one of these somewhere.
I just had the old adhesive to get up. Goop Brand hand cleaner totally dissolved it.

@@300zxdriver I also had a black tar like this tested by an abatement company. No % shown in the tar or the vinyl. Probably done between the 50s-70s. Testing is the only way to know.
This is EXACTLY what I needed! Trying to figure out how to restore a beautiful floor (not sure what it's made of) that was covered by this and two layers of carpet.
Please do not sand or grind black tar mastic, you'll have asbestos particles in the air! It needs to come up wet. There are low VOC, pro grade solvents for this

awesome - I just finished a job that involved removing cutback - but in many cases, asbestos fibers were added to the cutback - that was how the tar held a trowel ridge. I have heard as many as a third of cutback floors that are out there have these nasties in them. Be careful.

yes you are right, a lot of cutback did have asbestos. You should definitely get yours tested before taking on a project like this. Hopefully you will be lucky like me. My cutback was asbestos free.

Tom, sorry this reply was so late in coming. I actually do still have the philly floor tool. I never seem to be able to get around to selling it on ebay. If you are still interested i will see if i can throw up an auction for it.

I took up carpet, all kinds of black dust, looks like soot. Sweepable. I found out there is linoleum underneath. I will clean up the dust with caution. Is it glue, or??
May be mastic with Asbestos, so be careful. Home test it. If it’s negative, remove however works best. If it’s positive, keep wet while you remove or just seal/ prime and ad new floor over. Research it!!
First, you can get asbestos test kits at Home Depot and send them off. Results come pretty quickly. Test the linoleum AND a sample of the mastic. If the lino has asbestos, you'll want to consider either sealing and covering it or having a professional remediation. If the lino is clean but the mastic has asbestos, you have several options- seal it or remove it WET. Lots of videos on the subject.
There appears to be a suction hose for a vacuum hookup on the machine. Did you use this? I wonder how affective this would have been for dust control if that is its intention and also how practical to use this feature?
i tried hooking it up to my shop vac but did not seem to help with the dust, and i took it off. probably because this tool keeps it higher off the ground than most floor polisher attachements.
I`m currently dealing with tar and tar paper, I`m /We are heat gun and scraper to remove tar paper then hand planer then carbide blade on angle grinder then belt sander but the floors are worth it
I had the same problem as this floor, I heated my iron put it on steam placed the iron on a towel turned it up with the steam after a minute I pulled back the towel and scraped off the tire, it workes.

Paul Bock yes i sanded the floor after. the block shown in the video was rated as 50 grit. It made a couple of dig marks in the floor but it was surprisingly great in that respect. i sanded with 60 grit, 80 grit, 100 grit, and 120 grit. You could probably get away with less though. I spent most of my time with the 60 and 80 grit. there were some deeper scratches from the 50 grit block that took some time to sand out.

that "felt" from the old linoleum could well have been asbestos. sheet vinyl often had asbestos backing.
You are right, flooring products commonly contained asbestos. If you are doing a project similar to mine you should have all the layers tested by a certified lab as i did. Luckily mine was asbestos free.
Where is the follow up video that shows the finished project? Maybe you should invite UA-camrs (particularly this one) to your home to enjoy your new floors :)

Jennifer Strausser the blades don't dig in, they just work like really heavy grit sandpaper. they aren't sharp at all if that makes sense. they are very dull but have rough grit glued to the tips and you get the same amount of scratches you would get from normal 40 or 50 grit sandpaper. it's nothing you can't sand out.
What would be best to use on stairs
There is a chemical spray that melts that tar and adhesive Its called Black Jack tar and asphalt remover. You can get it at lowes or home depot . Its made to clean your hands and equipment and tools when you do taring work on roofs. Ive used it to clean my hands and it literally melts tar away in a few second. You can use that on stairs .Just spray it on then scrape it off.

I removed my black tar paper with a wallpaper steamer. I think it was safer. Your tool make a lot of dust (and asbestos), not really good for your lungs.

I rented the same machine with not luck. The disk underneath would not even turn and it would shuts off the breaker switch in the electric box.
bummer dude. A licensed electrician might be able to help you upgrade your breaker, or install a new circuit with higher amperage.
How many times did you have to change the sandpaper?
This tool has sanding blades, not paper. Believe it or not, i didn't change the blades at all. They are extremely durable.
How did home Depot charge u when u brought polisher back. And dimonds where gone,and gunked up. Alot huh don't lie I know they charged u atleast 350 for damage
No only 70 bucks.... its a flat fee of 70 bucks to rent that pad thing... it dont matter if u rent it for 4 hours or a week...
The tar glue has asbestos in it, I just had mine tested and abated. The only good deal you having going for you is it has between 5% to 7% asbestos in it.
@Jessica James Someone replaced the original hardwood floors in my house with parquet sized solid wood tiles, glued to the concrete subfloor with that black tar mastic. It's 3/4" thick in some areas- definitely a DIY fail. Had it tested and it is the asbestos kind so it must come up wet. Estimates for remediation are between $12k and $23k. (Gasp!) Spoke to EPA, it can be safely removed if it's removed WET. Absolutely DO NOT try to grind or sand it!!! Found a low VOC chemical that's getting it done, but it's labor intensive and takes awhile. One room at a time, I'm getting it off. Kitchen is done, working on dining room. Have to keep pets out of the room while I do it. Just make sure you take it up WET. Shop vac and lined buckets help. 🙂

@@leosotelo5119 Yes, I got it tested. I bought kits at home depot, put a sample in the container, and mailed it to the lab with payment. Results come back pretty quickly. I am using Sentinel SC-170 to take it up wet. You can find it online and look up youtube videos. Don't be scared, just be smart. And make sure whatever you're wearing to do it can be thrown away.

Jennifer Strausser sorry for the late reply! Just noticed your question. Home depot has a similar tool head for the floor polisher but unfortunately it's meant for concrete (at least that was the case for my local store). The only place i could find the tool designed for wood floors was the place formerly known as the philly floor store. It's been a few years since my floor was done maybe home depot rents the correct head now. It would be much cheaper to rent than buy based on the concrete style head. If you're having trouble i can send you the exact name and model number from mine (which i still have).

the floor polisher i did rent from home depot. so in other words, buy the block sanding attachment seperately. then rent the polisher from home depot. they do sell replacement blades at the link above as well if you should need them.

The corners were extra work. I rented a special hand sander from home depot that is made for corners and used a lot of 40 grit sandpaper.
There is a special scraper made to get into corners . If you can find a wood floor refinishing supply house they will have one It is made by Red Devil has replaceable blades and has to be sharpened often with a mill file. You can go the sandpaper route but with a little bit of elbow grease and this scraper you can do all the corners in a room in about 10 to 15 minutes verses hour or more with a sander, changing paper every 5 minutes. Beauty of the scraper no paper change or cost. I am a Master floor Tech been doing this for 45 plus years. Sort of got the hang of it now.
sendjoelletter hey Joel, ripped up old linoleum on a corner of the kitchen last year and my heart sank when I saw the black tar. As the floor is virgin northern hemlock (not a single blemish or knot anywhere) I’m about to dive in. House is around two hours from any town so rental would be a TON of driving. The structure is unheated in the winter and ambient temp can be around zero. Question: you mentioned that temp makes a big difference. Do you think at that very low temp a very course sander may be also effective as the tar would be hard as rock? Thanks in advance!
I would be very interested in buying this tool. I am removing adhesive from two large rooms in an old house. Let me know if you still have it. I did check at the Philly Floor Store but would prefer to get one a little cheaper if possible.

Whew, I tell you guys, I fought the black mastic and the black mastic won. If they made prisoners scrape this stuff no one would ever commit a crime again. At this point I'm just going to pay the professionals to nuke it from space.

LUCKYLADY000000 there’s no way we were using a powered chisel floor scraper the glue is hard as a rock. U sure just water will do that. Maybe mine has a different kind of glue. It’s like yellowish orange brown

the tar removal tool was about $300 plus shipping from philly floor store. The tool rental at home depot was about $30.

There is a aluminum plate that has 12 carbide bits on the bottom of it and is called a Hex Pin Plate and fits on a standard floor buffer like in the video. . It is made by Pearl Abrasives., and may be rented at Home Depot. and does a stellar job of removing adhesives from concrete. It's design keeps it from loading up like sand paper or the Dia Ma tab in this video. However once the bulk of the adhesive has been scraped off , the Dia Ma tab plate like in the video does an excellent job of polishing the concrete too like new condition. As far as the asbestos goes the fibers are encapsulated in an adhesive base not like the free form asbestos used in insulation and pipe wraps. People who have suffered from exposure to asbestos were working in an asbestos concentrated environment daily for many years. The small exposure to taking up a floor once in a life time is not going to give you lung cancer and make you die the next week. Another solution is to use a nom-flammable adhesive remover like orange citrus stripper. You pour it on the floor and leave it in a puddle for a few minutes then use a rubber squeegee and move the puddle to another section of the floor when you have removed most all of the adhesive and now you have a big black puddle on the floor wondering how to get it up , get some dry clay based cat litter or oil absorbing compound and pour it all over the puddle . It will absorb the mess and be scooped up without the liquid running all over. Any residue may be cleaned with hot water and detergent. DONOT use clumping cat litter. After the floor is dry you can over it with a sanding disc or the plate shown in the video. I have taken a lot of these floors up and as a former Instructor for a major floor covering manufacturer , 45 plus years in the floor business the methods I just described seem to work the most efficient and the quickest with least amount of clean up. Asbestos alert. Both the tar AND the felt. Dry sanding it is the worst thing you can do... But I am jealous yours came up 10 times easier.
Barbara Kinzle, not all mastic contains asbestos. I had mine tested by a certified lab. Luckily it was asbestos free. Testing is relatively inexpensive (about $20 for me). Everyone should get a test done before tackling a project like this.
sendjoelletter I haven't had mine tested... but I am treating it like it's asbestos. Keeping it wet, fans on, respirators on, etc... But I'm kicking myself anyway.
He said it was from the 60s and linoleum, I doubt it was linoleum mastic, it was what they put the vinyl or linoleum on top of .
It's called cut back it has asbestos, so does flooring from the 60s and 70s.
He has contaminated his whole house by sanding.
If Home Depot told him this they should be sued.
He most likely picked up asbestos and got it in his AC system or central heat.

D Law Yes i do. Do you want to buy it? It's in great shape and has lots of life left. the floor that had cutback was only about 400 sq ft, so there is a lot of life left in the blades. I will give you a good price.

Not with mine luckily. I had it tested before starting this project. It was asbestos free.

Lay towles on the floor and pour diet coke on them, go eat a sandwich, come back and that will come off the floor like butter

@@BJ-cp8fj yes. I found it on UA-cam, unfortunately i cant find the video. If you ever find yourself in this situation just grab a small towel and do just one little spot on the floor and see for yourself. I was a little exaggerated with the sandwich part......lol you should wait about an hour before you remove the towel. But this saved me much time and it wasn't that bad of a mess to clean up

That is what we in the flooring industry refer to as "cutback" that contains asbestos 99% of the time. I would never attempt this, after him saying the lino was from 1960, it is definitely ASBESTOS cutback! He should be wearing full PPE gear including cover alls, shoe covers, respirator as well as eye and ear protectors. You should have the entire area surrounding this masked off air tight with sheet plastic to keep from debris spreading throughout home. I feel bad for people that try to save money doing this while exposing yourself and your family to ASBESTOS! NEXT TIME CALL A PRO AND TEST THE GLUE! BLACK GLUE IS CUTBACK AND ALMOST ALWAYS CONTAINS ASBESTOS!

Another youtube video showed using old damp towels laid down on the floor, then pour diet Coke on the towel, let it set for 12 hours and the goo pulls right up. I tried it but could only go two hours...it worked better than expected. 12 hours might do the trick.Plan to try it this weekend for 12 hours
