most instructions show wrapping the handlebars on the tops (above the levers) in the wrong direction (which is away from the rider). this video is correct. switching direction at the levers lets the bar tape wrap toward the rider above the levers. that way when you're riding on the tops, you're actually tightening the tape.

The bike shop did it for me, but they forgot to put the piece of tape on that covers the lever. You can see that metal bit near the lever. It's an old racer which I am doing up, so does not have the rubber cover. Is it too late to put that piece of tape on, or should I now wait for the time when the whole thing needs replacing again?
Hi Sam, It's too late to put that piece of tape on right now. It's no problem riding whitout it, but most riders think their bike looks better with that piece of tape covering the metal part.
