I'm going to say, as a Polish Railfan, we have something similar here. Not exactly like, 'heritage units' specifically, most of our railway companies use old locos, but locos painted in special liveries, they're few and far between, like, we do have some EP07s painted in old liveries, but like, each of them seemingly have an unstable future. EU07-005, one of the oldest locos in PKP IC's service, got repainted into old PKP Colours, while a newer loco, well, 1970s/1980s new anyway, EP07-XXX[don't remember the number], known as 'Szpinak' aka 'Spinach' due to the livery, got scrapped after some license or whatever happened. ET22s, pah, these barely get painted in any liveries besides PKPCargo Blue. Anything else, well, depends on the looks. EDIT; About the actual topic of the video, i really don't think there's much of an issue with US 'heritage units' being more common. With how big the US is, and how lacking the rail network/railroads in general are, as-is, i think it'd be somewhat good for these to be more common, more people will see 'em, ig.
I live 1 minute from the CSX yard and I have seen 3 different heritage units last year. If you live near a yard, you have a much higher chance of seeing one.
I personally like UP’s “We Are One” more than CSX’s only because the multicolor scheme they have going on with the black and white gives it a unique look. But with CSX, that blue just hurt my eyes, maybe if it was darker.
I just had a thought imagine the amount of backlash a class 1 would get if they put a heritage unit into long term storage? I’ve been watching these for a while now, not a train enthusiast but they have been growing on me. Might hit up the local crossing soon.
its a bit unfair, Australia doesn't really paint freight locomotives into their original liveries while they're still running with current operators, like the only time to see one is in storage and that's like thousands of km away from where they are meant to be running -Werris creek-. It is mainly passenger locomotives that get the heritage livery like V/line A66, A62, Y127 and P20 theyre now heritage only ran and locomotives in the Victorian Railways liveries. it would be nice to see a NR in the old National Rail livery for a celebration or something

Thank you for all the great videos, and hope 2025 is good to you and brings you lots of GEVO’s, lol jk, I meant Heritage Units and fallen flags, love the content buddy.
its the "slant" that should be a straight line down at the end of the cab... i could live with that. PS- assuming he reads my comment, CSX just did a special interest unit thats a SD70AC flared 4720 "CSX ONE" IT also means that all departments should work together and its not just 1 individual person, its all people (hence one) and most of the "stickers" represent most of the major departments.
I’m from New York, so I don’t really know much about other state trains (I know a lot about Steam Locomotives mainly), but I think Heritage Units looks cool. I don’t know a lot of them, but I know the UP heritage units. Other than that, I think the heritage units looks cool, it represents the memories of the older railroads.
So a few things that should be noted about the new Norfolk southern Heritage unit -the contest was announced shortly after Norfolk Southern approved an engineers contract that almost all their unions voted against -supposedly the reason they couldn’t do D&H was because they were not able to obtain licensing from CPKC
I got very lucky this summer to see CSXT1836 leading ethanol empties along the Geneva sub. But me seeing heritage units including the UP ones passing through my railfanning area is very low the only time they do is if they get put onto a train that goes through my railfanning area which doesnt happen all that often.
CSX's "One CSX" unit is by far their biggest middle finger to NS and I friggin love it. NS had a "labor unit" which was just basically a random C6M with labor union logos stickers stuck on but it was ONLY for a photo shoot for good PR and as soon as it was done they ripped them right off (cause NS is so full of S&%@) CSX meanwhile was like "nuh uh we don't do that" because I gotta say Joe's done a lot to fix CSX which is more than I can say for Ancora who just recently initiated their hostile takeover of NS. Then NS's actual "Thank you Railroaders" unit (more like "Thank you shareholders") was released after a mass layoff occured including at Altoona where the engine was released from... PR stunts aside that is just inexcusable. Imagine getting laid off by wherever you work and the company says "Thank you for those that work for us in the industry" like wtf! I think UP had a similar fiasco with one of their special units. Shame as it looks nice with that A Team style livery. As for CSX's HUs, I know people cry about them so much but I personally don't care nor mind them. At least they stand out from the rest even the CR one which uses "Conrail Quality" instead of flat out "Conrail" I see the message as "Looking forward to the future but never forgetting the past behind you" Now granted they could of done what someone did to those CSX Geeps by painting the nose which was the 180 version but is it really worth losing your mind over a shiny GE? Also when it comes to HUs personally SEPTA is the underrated MVP of the game. They did it before it was cool (with a PRR Silverliner II that carried it's "Pennsylvania" lettering til it's scrappage in 2010 and then their current HUs are carefully thought out (for the most part) For example 280 the 1st RDG IV was not only the 1st one built for the Reading, it's also the 1st Silverliner IV ever built making it the oldest revenue earning locomotive on their fleet. 401 the PC HU was the 1st one for Penn Central as well and even the PRR one (Though the PRR never had the IVs) was still a PC car so it works. I'm just surprised no one's noticing how many Conrail HUs we have now, there's like 5 of em! Also there's more NS HUs in the pipeline including the VERY anticipated D&H one which is strange because I'm pretty sure CP took them over but NS does apparently have some D&H trackage so I'm just gonna ignore it.
lol imagine if there was a dash 8 inflation, we are lucky we have a dash 9 inflation during the years of 1996-2016 for Ns and for bnsf 1993-2022 or 2023. I would imagine if it was like that for cn csx and up too :/ I think it would be cool and awesome.
Look, people, if you’re lucky and catch heritage units that frequently to say you don’t want more, I’ve seen three ever, and three special schemes. In a time where all we get is the same class one paint scheme and likely only 5 or 6 different loco models on mainlines nowadays unless your talkin about heritage units which I’m thankful for any chance I see one and know where a lot of bonnets and execs, cascades and YN1-2 of several railroads even heritage units with even older schemes are at, still love seeing patched bloody noses, be happy with the variety we even get at all they don’t have to do it at all. They could just up there exec salary’s instead of spending that extra money on a different paint and scheme it’s variety and I always look forward to catching more in the future. Hadn’t seen a single fallen heritage unit until this year I’ve seen 3 of the UP’s now and could’ve seen the SP one but chose not to make a honestly short drive as it was down for maintenance. I get tired of seeing never ending 70aces and acte45’s or whatever number letter combo rebuilt 44’s I never ending see never ending GEVO’s and locals apart from shortlines nearly always being sd40-2’s and geep38’s unless you know where older models work around. Like any new scheme I see and saw the Pepsi can P42 just yesterday for the first time and was stoked I finally caught it and at speed with a good film shot and high speed runby
Csx heritage units are good. I like em. Although they had a LOT of potential tbh. The new TAG heritage unit isnt bad, i would have preferred the D&H though. UP 1979 we will not talk about. CSX 4720 isnt terrible either. I like it because its a new special interest train so ill still go out to see it.
To this day, UP 1979 is the only special interest UP unit I have never seen. It's been trapped in Nebraska local service for most of the time it's been out.
Hey real quick if I would to start railfanning just causally with a scanner and a car not chasing trains or anything and just listening and waiting would I be considered a foamer?
I just saw someone get hit by a big rig in reverse? I’m angry about said person’s stupidity to get hit by a big rig in reverse I mean just bob and we’ve and you could avoid it.
Painting engine = expensive GEVOs = reliable and last a long time Sentence= RRs make GEVO heritage engines because to spend all that money on paint they want it to last more than 4 years
I do think the math here is a little bit off, since presumably there a limited number of lines/trains to which heritage units are regularly assigned, which rail fans figure out quickly, thus greatly increasing the chances of seeing one. But there’s no danger of “heritage unit inflation” any time soon. I do hope that NS does consider doing a D&H heritage unit, although admittedly since that’s just a blue war bonnet perhaps they are afraid of some kind of legal issue?
I'm a rail fan and an aviation history enthusiast, and it bothers me that people would be up in arms over what should be a good thing. What foamers seem to forget about heritage units is that it's not just about being a PR headpiece for the railroad it represents. It's about preserving history, giving people a means of learning about these machines, and keeping them running for future generations to witness as opposed to just scrapping them when they've outlived their usefulness. But well... what can you ask for, from the toxic minority of any community? If railroads stop making heritage units like they're asking, they'll suddenly start screeching about how they aren't "doing enough to preserve historic locomotives". You literally just can't please them.
Perhaps railroads should paint their locos and rolling stock in the _ugliest_ paint schemes ever, just to piss foamers off. I'm pretty sure railroad sabotage would skyrocket in that case though...
Think we have too many heritage units? In Japan, a good handful of companies, big and small, have painted their trains in classic liveries as well, (i.e. Tobu Railway has painted several 8000 Series trains in their original colors, Sangi Railway has reverted some of their trains to their old Seibu colors, even JR East painted an E2 Shinkansen in the classic JNR 200 Series livery and an E3 in its original colors) which under American terms makes them the equivalent of heritage units, though they are referred to as "retro/revival liveries" under Japanese terminology. It's actually hard to go to any railway without seeing one, especially on smaller lines. Be grateful they're something exciting here!
Criticize me all you want, but the scheme of NS 4822 is actually not too bad, the only thing I hate about NS 4822 is the fact that they “thank” their workers on a locomotive. If they want to treat their workers correctly, then they cannot be like Penn Central…

I saw it believe a CSX heritage unit, it was trailing a CSX lead in lake county, Ohio and had B&O plaque on her side and B&O colors.

@Baconbs718 back across the pond with you.
NS missed the opportunity to paint William Mahone on the side of their locomotive and call it a “heritage, not hate” locomotive.
I personally like UP’s “We Are One” more than CSX’s only because the multicolor scheme they have going on with the black and white gives it a unique look. But with CSX, that blue just hurt my eyes, maybe if it was darker.
Great episode. I'll stand ten toes down that NS 4822 looks good.
Bro you got to quote that!
somebody plz send help 💀
This kinda makes me think, would a steam locomotive be considered a heritage unit? Most of the time they’re in their original colors
Imagine not having the goat HU on your class 2 railroad 😭🫵
I just had a thought imagine the amount of backlash a class 1 would get if they put a heritage unit into long term storage?
I’ve been watching these for a while now, not a train enthusiast but they have been growing on me. Might hit up the local crossing soon.
Csx 4720 looks like BNSFs 25 anniversary units and up 1979 and conrail merged into one locomotive
its a bit unfair, Australia doesn't really paint freight locomotives into their original liveries while they're still running with current operators, like the only time to see one is in storage and that's like thousands of km away from where they are meant to be running -Werris creek-. It is mainly passenger locomotives that get the heritage livery like V/line A66, A62, Y127 and P20 theyre now heritage only ran and locomotives in the Victorian Railways liveries. it would be nice to see a NR in the old National Rail livery for a celebration or something
8:00 How is 1979 worse than 4720?
imo 1979 is better than 1943 and 1111.
Honey wake up BNSF 1458 posted another video
Atleast the new CSX one isnt a GEVO
Hey BMSF 1458, absolutely love your videos buddy. I found your channel a couple months ago, and inspired me to make my own channel. Thank you for all the great videos, and hope 2025 is good to you and brings you lots of GEVO’s, lol jk, I meant Heritage Units and fallen flags, love the content buddy.
its the "slant" that should be a straight line down at the end of the cab... i could live with that. PS- assuming he reads my comment, CSX just did a special interest unit thats a SD70AC flared 4720 "CSX ONE" IT also means that all departments should work together and its not just 1 individual person, its all people (hence one) and most of the "stickers" represent most of the major departments.
i saw heritage inflation and thought it was gonna be something different.
*5:01** This Photo, that one MEME 💀💀*
CSX is obsessed with Hertiage units
the clickbait title format worked on me btw
3:48 personal that red stripe reminded me of the a-team van.
We are one? What is this, the Lion King?
4851 was painted for T&AG since NS didn’t get the rights from CPKC to do so, so they went with the 2nd popular option
The honoring workers one has to be one of my favorites ever.
So a few things that should be noted about the new Norfolk southern Heritage unit
-the contest was announced shortly after Norfolk Southern approved an engineers contract that almost all their unions voted against
-supposedly the reason they couldn’t do D&H was because they were not able to obtain licensing from CPKC
I got very lucky this summer to see CSXT1836 leading ethanol empties along the Geneva sub. But me seeing heritage units including the UP ones passing through my railfanning area is very low the only time they do is if they get put onto a train that goes through my railfanning area which doesnt happen all that often.
Its pretty bad when rogue paint crews produce better heritage GPs than the official company paint shops.
UP is running 1979 on local service now. They don’t try to stick her on through trains. Supposedly in Nebraska.
the goddamn lego train at 6:18 caught me so off guard 💀
lol imagine if there was a dash 8 inflation, we are lucky we have a dash 9 inflation during the years of 1996-2016 for Ns and for bnsf 1993-2022 or 2023.
It's been trapped in Nebraska local service for most of the time it's been out.
what are heritage units 😭 can someone help me
Did bro intentionally exclude CN, UP, and CPKFC
Hey real quick if I would to start railfanning just causally with a scanner and a car not chasing trains or anything and just listening and waiting would I be considered a foamer?
I just saw someone get hit by a big rig in reverse? I’m angry about said person’s stupidity to get hit by a big rig in reverse I mean just bob and we’ve and you could avoid it.
6:19 Comparing CSX 4720 to that Lego train is hilarious
How do they put heritage livery’s on gevo’s only? 💀
Painting engine = expensive
GEVOs = reliable and last a long time
Sentence= RRs make GEVO heritage engines because to spend all that money on paint they want it to last more than 4 years
With BNSF’s 25th Anniversary Units, they were brand new and in the shop for paint at Mid Car American in KC.
So I see we’ve started using the Moist Critical title format
The model train manufacturers love it. I did get the NS 8102 PRR unit in HO scale.
DCC? And what brand? I was thinking about getting that one from intermountain with dcc and sound
shouldve just painted 4720 into the conrail quality scheme smh
factual
Coming from aviation, I can understand how one would "think" this is the minority. It's not.
Good lorde, that WM unit needs the full paint Scheme. Its 3/4 beautiful.
Perhaps railroads should paint their locos and rolling stock in the _ugliest_ paint schemes ever, just to piss foamers off. I'm pretty sure railroad sabotage would skyrocket in that case though...
The rail corridor near me is a Norfolk southern 2 or more freight trains a day 2 or 3 Amtrak a week
If they want to treat their workers correctly, then they cannot be like Penn Central…
whats up george?
Rare BNSF 1458 endorsement of Norfolk Southern
CSX 4720 might be the best thing CSX has ever made
better than NS 4822
I think 3194 was the best, I want it in ho scale honestly
Ns 4822 is my favorite unit ever painted
