I gotta be honest, I don't get the all out love for this episode. It's not bad, especially compared to the end, but for whatever reason I just don't find it all that great either. To each their own though!
Seeing sansa suffer relentlessly for almost half her life at this point, it was nice to see her get a glimmer of hope after she found out her brothers are still alive. Hope is a strong motivater to stay strong.
"Oh my sweet summer child what do you know about fear? Fear is for the winter when the snows fall a hundred feet deep and the ice wind comes howling out of the north. Fear is for the long night, when the sun hides its face for years at a time, and little children are born and live and die all in darkness...." 🥶 What the second half of five does best is portraying that feeling of airtight hopelesness. It's demoralizing but addictive at the same time. Hardhome is nuts.
Hardhome is one of my all time favs. For the ambience alone if nothing else, and the slow anxiety it induces. That dark and desolate snowy panorama throughout the evacuation feel very despairing. The surrounding feels very "Othery", pun intended. As I said last time Winterfell and beyond the wall feels like a dystopian fairy tale inverted on its head right now, mesmerizing in its eerie silence.
This is the first battle directed by Miguel Sapochnick (not sure if spelled correctly). He did all of the other battles after that and they were amazing. Husband and I recently watched all of the battles only, and you can definitely tell when he took over. Hardhome was fabulous.
When Jon holds Longclaw in the air and yells "Night's Watch With Me!" as the handful of Brothers in Black run to the other direction of the retreating wildlings clad in gray; that freeze frame moment leading up to the Valyrian Steel revelation; and the ending with the Night King slowly walking through that creeking plank. Those are the three shots I live for. The cinematography is very emotive and ominous. This one's up there with the top episodes.

Karsi had to be instantly likeable, since she was going to die. But the actress really pulled it off. She also enjoyed all the fighting sequences; she hadn't done that kind of role before.

loved the reaction to this episode! There are two things I'd like to clarify for you: 1. The "Zombies", called Wights here, aren't White Walkers. White Walkers are those icy looking whole other living form 2. the faceless men are assassins. The dude Arya has to look for is her "job"
The battle sequence at Hardhome took a full 15 days to film, and involved about 400 extras and 50 stuntmen. Ultimately about 220 extras were used: after training the original set in fighting moves, the producers then held "tryouts" by having them mock fight each other, then picked who they felt were the best ones.
I forgot how good this episode is. I only ever think of the battle at Hardhome when I think of it, but Dany and Tyrion's interaction, Sansa finding out her baby brothers are still alive, even that glimpse of Cersei in abject misery - **chef's kiss**. Miguel Sapochnick is a stellar director.

I love how it took 48 episodes to show exactly why the white walkers and the army of the dead are so feared. They simply overrun everything and not only can't be beaten but they add the dead to their army. It's amazing that no one saw this episode coming and no leaks came out that this was being filmed.

About Arya, you are right, she is learning how to lie properly because if she truly wants to become a faceless man (or woman), she will have to pretend to be someone else (or just be) so she has to lie like a fucking politician. And explaining what her quest is, the House of Black and White is a temple, but you can also contract assassins. The men she is suppose to poison, is not really good or bad, it doesn't matter, someone wants him killed, and contracted a faceless assassin for it. Since he is not really a threat, the "Kindly Man", transferred that task to her, as a test. I sad "Kindly Man" and not Jaqen 'cause in order to become a faceless men, you have to be no one. So no one there has a real identity and no name. Arya just calls them in her head by some nicknames. Jaqen H'ghar was the name that person back in season 2 gave to her, but you can't be sure if it's his real name, 'cause like i sad, they are no one. It was just a character they were playing. The "Kindly Man" she is interacting right now, may not even be the same person, it could be just another "no one" playing the role of Jaqen, you know?

The dull, colorless fatalism of hardhome is straight up unnerving. The "shield that guards the realms of men" finally comes face to face with Death itself. What an excellent episode!
Unfortunately, they had to change the actor for the Night King in season 6. It doesn't make a huge difference because they are covered in prosthetics, however the actor in this season really had this death stare that you can see he perfected in those final shots.
This episode was critically acclaimed and I absolutely love it because I love the gloom & doom undertone of the battle, Sapochnick's direction is very different from the previous battles. Episodes like Hardhome is why this season won an unprecedented number of Emmys and reaching peak viewership, it's why I love 5 despite the next two episodes that many seem to have a huge problem with. "Wicked Games" is the perfect theme for this season. No season with an episode like Hardhome in it should be considered a net negative in any logical way, even though they deviated from super important things like Ramsay and Jeyne Poole lmao.
The zombies in Game of Thrones are different. They do not eat people, they only want to kill. So that if someone died as a warrior and come back as a zombie, he's gonna use the weapons he had when he died to kill. And you do not become a zombie if you die or get bitten. It's just that the main White Walker guy that can bring people from the dead. Also obviously he seems to be able to can create cold winds. The Wildling lady in this episode was a pretty good character for the little we saw of her. Believe it or not she played the wife of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau(Jaime Lannister) in a movie from Denmark movie, which is where they come from.
Hannah Waddington, the actress who plays the "confess-confess-confess" septa menacing Cersei, has gone on to play Rebecca on "Ted Lasso," a show I have not watched but is pretty popular.

It would have obviously been a very different mission. But you can see why the people north of the wall had to be dealt with one way or another. Not knowing jon the way we do. They are smart to be suspicious. Since traveling up there to slit their throat. Would be a good strategic maneuver. Assuming they burnt the corpses afterwards.

Yeah he definitely deserved to be hanged or beheaded for murder but slowly torturing him over a long period is what makes you feel bad for him. Also in the books those boys were hinted at being his bastards so he is cursed as a kin slayer.

They were not burned alive. He's not Melisandre. The burning was after death to conceal their identities. Still terrible of course.
Yeah he definitely deserved to be hanged or beheaded for murder but slowly torturing him over a long period is what makes you feel bad for him. Also in the books those boys were hinted at being his bastards so he is cursed as a kin slayer.
