This was my introduction to the late great David Sanborn as a solo artist 38 years ago when I was only 20 years of age. I was the assistant manager add a video store in Sherman oaks California and we would always play this video tape every Friday and Saturday night to get us in our BEST possible weekend working mood! Rest In Peace Mr. Sanborn I can't thank you enough for all of the joy that your music has given my mind body and soul for almost four decades.
I remember this album (Straight to the heart) from back in the 80’s. I wore this cassette out because I’d play it so much. David will never be forgotten! He lives on through his music. The other musicians here are simply incredible to say the least. The only one I ever met in person was Marcus Miller here in Europe! What a musician! David Sanborn, 1945-2024 Rest in peace 🙏🏿
I snuck backstage for this group in Mesa, AZ in 1983, and I saw Marus and the band filing in back stage (I arrived early, had a suit on, and everyone thought I was a stage manager). I stopped Marcus and asked him some kind of music oriented question, about his setup and he said "come on in" and I joined David and Hiram and Marcus in the dressing room. After talking to Marcus for a while (I'm a bassist) and listening to Dave warming up, Dave looks up at me and says "Who has a Joint!" looking straight into my eyes... I said "I got a big ball of Hash out in the car but I need a back stage pass to go get it." The bands keyboardist handed me her's, and I came back in 3 mins, got the entire band totally HIGH, and I thought FER SURE, I just screwed up this concert! (Marcus did not seem impressed or interested but I'm a huge DAVE fan, could not disappoint! ;-) Band came out on stage, BLEW MY HAIR BACK, (This band is so TIGHT! and so LOOSE too..) I was so happy, never forget that night ever; most powerful performance of human musical energy I had ever witnessed. Hiram! Marcus! Dave, thanks so much, Marcus you were so great to me. Cheers.
Well, if it was THIS band, then man, you must either have forgotten your eyeglasses at home, or have had some of that hash before as well, because the keyboardist was the great Don Grolnick, and for sure, he didn't look like a girl AT ALL! 😂
My first concert ever was David Sanborn! I had the wonderful chance of meeting him backstage and I was so enamored by His presence. I was at least sixteen years old at the time and I was lucky enough to get an autograph. Mr. Sanborn was very warm and pleasant and a joy to be around.”
One of my older brothers bought his " taking off " album back in the 70's and I was hooked listening to it. I was only thirteen. Started a love affair with sax. Still remember buying Gato Barbieri's Caliente album and Ronnie laws " every generation" my three favourites
This version of Smile is David and the band's greatest ever performance. David at the top of his game and the best ever piano intro to this track. I'd like this played at my funeral because musically it has everything.
Absolutely genius and all the way OFF THE CHARTS. I will always cherish the times that I saw Marcus Miller and Hiram Bullock together at SOBs ; The Bottom Line and Irving Plaza in NYC. Truly transformative and revelatory.
The track Love and Happiness: Awsome, splendid and teriffic to hear Marcus Miller, David and the great voice of Hamaish Stewart as well as the other three very great musicians. This track makes my head emptier and my feelings fuller, like being in Heaven: pure uncomplicated beauty for my soul, so inspiring Lov Ya, yours sincerely Tom sax Bloom (my Nickname)
Definitely he was was one of top sessions bassist...he was producing ,composing contributing to the success of Dave and Luther Vandross and Miles upcoming album Tutu introducing him to the younger generation
Wow - Best players (jazz/ R&B/ Rock) in music (at that 'moment in time' in 1985 'best/ top' worldwide - DS with many guest 'band appearances') - ''O u c h''......!!!!!!!
Saw this tour at the Fox Theater in Detroit. Awesome stuff. I believe during this "Smile" is when Bullock went running down the aisle jamming, disappears through the exit doors, then reappears in the balcony playing. It was awesome.
He did the same thing here in Indianapolis at the Indiana Repertory Theater. I was up on the second level and there he was running up right in front of me blazing out a hot solo with Sanborn answering back to him every lick that he played!
Never Gets Old Quality Line Up F##kin Xcellent..!!Almost 30yrs Young & Still Fresh..!! WICKED..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Top Session Muzos Doin It Soooooo Rite..!!
Hamish Stuart is one of the greatest hidden talents in Fusion jazz....He was an awesome performer with AWB...this dude loves and lives what I call wooden backdoor funk....
Such a killer band - I think I saw a version of them twice and an earlier show with Al Jereau in the early 80’s. After the show I always hung around and they’d come out and talk - so chill and accessible; best part of seeing Dave was they sounded great and put on a super performance. He’ll never be forgotten- him and Hiram are putting the band back together! ✊🏼🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
this became an LP released in UK. It was the incredible chemistry of this line up. If they took this on tour it was like being hit by a thunderbolt. Sanborn at his ultimate and world class on this, no one can match his playing on these beautiful tracks. Hope these guys are all well at this date.
Run 4 cover” is great the thumping is great but as a bass player when the sax solos came in seconds & thirds I would have given it many runs’ in notes! All over tha’ place! The sounds called for it!
As a musician ;) Marcus has explained why he came on solo with slap and thumb only within sax players: because it was the better answer he had to propose to a sax player in the music and get public reaction, he had no chance playing notes to answer to a sax solo (Marcus is not Mat Garrisson). He had to bring and show his own vocabulary in a solo. So this is an artistic choice. The intro is quite pretty without slapping.. Best Cheers Trujillo
RIP to one of the GREATS! 🙏

Rest in peace 🙏🏿
Rip David! I know every single note of his album Straight to the heart . What a marvelous and stunning live performance!
I snuck backstage for this group in Mesa, AZ in 1983, and I saw Marus and the band filing in back stage (I arrived early, had a suit on, and everyone thought I was a stage manager). Looks like an amazing memory deep in the heart for ever indeed :-) lucky bitch !

What kind of hash?
One of the best concerts of all time.
My first concert ever was David Sanborn! I had the wonderful chance of meeting him backstage and I was so enamored by His presence. I was at least sixteen years old at the time and I was lucky enough to get an autograph. Mr. Sanborn was very warm and pleasant and a joy to be around.”
I grew up on David Sanborn...It was always on rotation on Papa's stereo.
Straight to the heart was one of the first non rock ~ albums~ I bought as a teen. I felt so distinguished!
I think it was my second and my friend's thought I had gone Loco...I think they called it boring....
One of my older brothers bought his " taking off " album back in the 70's and I was hooked listening to it. I was only thirteen. Started a love affair with sax. Still remember buying Gato Barbieri's Caliente album and Ronnie laws " every generation" my three favourites
When my time is up.. @ my memorial service I want" Smile" played this recording.. I saw them in 84. This tour.. Ioved this since then.. my favorite
Hell they played this whole excerpt
Even though I want to cry right now - let’s smile and be thankful for having Dave in our lifetime !
This version of Smile is David and the band's greatest ever performance. David at the top of his game and the best ever piano intro to this track. I'd like this played at my funeral because musically it has everything.
don grolnick hiram and david building the band back up
Love this video, his sound, his embouchure, his attack, his phrasing and soul are unbeatable! And he was a Mench!
Rest in Peace David Sanborn. One of the greatest musical influences in my life.
Killer band...
He also appeared to be a great guy. He will be remembered.
🍵
May the world be peaceful like
the melody of music...🙏
THESE CATS ARE ON FIRE
That sax solo was every thing. I kept skipping through the song just to hear the sax.
To me this is the best performance on stage from David Sanborn and Marcus Miller, thanks for sharing this gem
David Sanborn, Hamish Sturart and the rest of the band are simply GREAT!!!!!
Puts me right back into the late 80’s & early 90’s when fusion jazz was the only music that made you feeeeel.
I got to see this band play live. They are truly one of the greatest jazz ensembles ever.
The best band 4 ever Marcus, Don, Hiram, Buddy 😃and master of sax David Sanborn
Marcus Miller live is almost too much for one's heart. Miller is so incredible! He was born with his bass attached to his body! For sure!
Note to all Jazz bands:
this is how you do a live “stiudio” recording
Learn from the masters
As “live” today as it was in 1985 (35 years ago)
😃🌈🎷⚡️✨🌟

May 10th, 1984. I was there. SIR in NYC. Great show!
That’s so awesome!
Wow man
Dang! You lucky man!
Young Marcus was only in his twenties then. Was already cool from then
Hiram was pretty damn cool, himself, too.
@@creageous Agreed. I remember watching Marcus and Hiram in a Sanborn concert in Japan. They was Bad!
Definitely he was was one of top sessions bassist...he was producing ,composing contributing to the success of Dave and Luther Vandross and Miles upcoming album Tutu introducing him to the younger generation
Every single musician here is phenomenal.
All of them on top of their performance! Live made like that? Only for the best!!!!
In this live, Hiram and Marcus are also incredibly cool!!!
How intense their performances are.

Браво Дэвид умничка...
なにかしらサンボーン同様社会の壁を感じている自分はいつも彼のサックスに共感させられる。ある種の疎外感とこの先も闘っていかければならないのかと痛感する
one of the greatest

Когда танцует получаешь такое же удовольствие как при близких отношениях вдвоем...

The LP is called "Straight To The Heart" it actually a live studio recording with audience, got Vinyl & VHS about 1985
........And then Hiram takes over.
RIP Hiram Bullock. 💐
Different take of Love and Happiness than the record. Amazing vocal from Hamish Stuart here
I love it listen to and watch it everyday
David
Lovely track and funky
Sax MAN CAN PLAY THE SAX

The intro is quite pretty without slapping..
Best Cheers Trujillo
