I had the pleasure of spending many hours in the studio with them making 4 albums with them. It was such a unique and creative bond they had together and I got to witness the real genius they had during their collaborations I write about the making of Close Up in my book and you see how that spark of genius that affected the music that will last for decades and decades
I remember "CLOSE UP". I tried to play the melodies on that cassette on my flute to make my Saturdays worthwhile. Thank you, Marcus Miller, for playing with David Sanborn on that CD. I am just a fan. But a grateful fan!
These two musical masters captured my attention years ago and I became an instant fan. Thank you, David Sanborn. I am honoured to have your sax playing in my mind. Wherever you are, peace!👏🏾👏🏾
Lord I feel like crying. David's Alto followed me all around the country and I had all his first original albums. He left us too soon but that's God's business. He died 5 days before my birthday this year. Now at 67 I can't play the sax anymore due to losing all my teeth in 2008. Thank God I'm still a composer, pianist and bassist. Thanks Dave, we all love you more than you will ever know.
From luanshya in Zambia. Yes you reached us here with your musical genius mr David Sanborn. Your music will forever be part of the fabric of my life. Rest well sir
My Condolences to his ,family, friends and fans .. I grew up listening to Dave wayback in 79 when I was a Junior in H.S. I still have his 1st album and the Majority of the rest of them as well...I saw him then when he had Bassist Neil Jason ( who he did the 1st Run for Cover ) then when the Voyer album dropped in 80 ..Marcus put the world on notice.. (although I had already heard and seen him with Lonnie Liston Smith and Linny White ..he was just 17 or 18 at that time ) but I will definitely miss this brother because as Marcus said ..we grew together musically as Musicians who were blessed to perform with him and some of us as musicians would learn his material because we were in bands that use some those tunes in our set.. It really makes me reflect on how the 80's was truly an amazing decade but as we all know all of us has a day.. So stay humble ,have fun ( be safe about it of course ) and stay away from all and any type negativity...REST IN POWER DAVE SANBORN...🎷🙏 . and also to Hiram Bullock ( the guitarist ) my brother you've been gone from us for almost 20 years , nonetheless I still miss you Bro...🙏
What a great tribute from Marcus Miller to the GREATEST jazz alto sax musician of our time. Besides working with Miller you can hear Sanborn is numerous cuts by Bob James; another phenominal musician. As I listen to this tribute it says so much about the modest and loving spirit Sanborn gave us all. May you rest peacefully my brother and know your music and legacy will live on. FWA3
I am extremely sad over the passing of David Sanborn. He was a great musician. I am sure he is delighting all the angels in heaven with his jazz and saxophone playing. I will miss him.
So David Sanborn had polio at a young age and he played the saxophone instead of another instrument because he could get around on that instrument easier than some other instruments that he tried. Wow!! What a contribution he made to the world of jazz and pop music. I loved how he soloed and I love how other younger saxophonists emulated his style. Thank you, Sanborn, for your magnanimous contribution to every song you ever played on. Wish you were still alive and soloing,,,
He initially played the piano but because of his polio, doctors suggested he play a wind instrument instead. Coz it would help his lungs and chest. So he chose a saxophone
David Sanborn was the first saxophonist I heard play. As a child growing up in NYC, I always wanted to play saxophone like him. I ended up starting on Tenor in '92 and never lost the sound of his sax in my head. While I'm not a professional instrumentalist, I can still hold my own and continue to learn from his recordings. He'll be forever missed.
It broke my heart when I read about Sanborn's death. My 71st birthday was the day after his passing I had been listening and enjoying his music for many years And will continue to listen until it's my time. Thank you for your very touching tribute, Marcus Miller.❤ Always Rest In Peace and Power, David Sanborn. 🎷 🎶 🎵❤
David was my first introduction to the saxophone. Listening to him often brought tears to my eyes. Very distinctive sounds like no other. Love you brother. RIP
R.I.P Mr Sanborn. He had such a distinctive sound and style. He he one the 3 sax players that made me want to play sax when I was 15-17 years old along with Grover Washington.Jr & Michael Brecker (in the early 80's). I also became an instant fan of Marcus Miller. David Sanborn will be missed big time, his legacy, his sound and his music will leave on !....
The first time I heard David Sanborn was 1975 on an album by Joe Beck. Though it was Joe Becks album, Sanborn captured me. I remember as a young sax player myself then saying, Man, who the heck is this guy? I was hooked.
Each artist has his own unique "signature" to his playing. And.........when David Sanborn "signed" his sax play on cuts.......the sound was unmistakeably given and known to the listener. Thanks for the airplay on MANY valuable artists cuts, beside your own, Dave. How cool has been the ride as........we venture on with your sound in continuum. RIP, DS.
A master, even though he would like to be called that, a truly missed musician I grew up listening to and loved so much, it still hurts😢😢😢, miss you man and to Marcus Miller tribute, man you’re class personified.
Wow, sad to hear of David's passing. He was one of my Best Jazz artist, I have been playing his music since the early 90's when I had a radio show in LA. His music always picks me up & puts joy & happiness in in my heart. May his legacy be long lived in the Jazz arena!!
Like Marcus Miller, David Sanborn sax will always be in my mind. I used to sleep at night on. It was so soothing to me the energy behind every note… he will be missed in this world. His TV show will always be a great memory. His guest were the best.. he was such a good soul. You can just tell by watching his movements and demeanor.. I’m so happy that he found his Love in his last years ( Alice) on earth that and itself is such a blessing for a good person. Rest well, my brother.❤
May you Rest in Peace David Sanborn... Your "Voyeur" Album sparked my interest in Contemporary Jazz when I was a Sophomore in College in 1981. I would play your Album over and over while studying and when I needed a "Lift" - I believe that "Music is the sound of the Soul". Your Collaboration with the Greatest Musicians of all time has made me a Jazz Lover for life. Thank You Sir !! You and Your Work will be surely missed. Say Hello to Chuck Loeb and Miles Davis while you're up there and other others in the Jazz circle ! , now you can rest !
Oh man! What a huge loss. I’ve been a fan since 1987, bought A Change of Heart on vinyl. Proud he was born in Tampa as I live in the Bay Area. Saw him outdoors in concert in the 90s in downtown St. Pete. What a show that was. Now he’s in heaven with Hiram Bullock and Al Jarreau! ❤❤❤❤🎉RIP David!
Gotta love em! Hearing him got me started on Jazz especially when that Marcus joined him....I was in heaven. Many memories and feelings from each and every tune as they have been played over and over. Rest In Peace Mr. Sanborn!
Just broken hearted to hear of his passing, i met Dave back in the Woodstock days in 70,71 when a lot of us moved there after the concert, well he worked with us in a band called Bang Buzz, Feiten Fred Beckmeier Neil Larsen Tom Dawes and myself on drums, i invited my Dad up to meet Dave ,Dad was an alto sax player in the 40,s 50,s big band days he said this guy will be a biggie some day after they played together a bit, sure enough a 6 time grammy winner he was RIP DAVE

What an incredible musical journey and made all the more meaningful by the honor and respect you developed over the years. Nothing beats a mentor-mentee relationship and like all your fans, Marcus, I’m proud to have been along for the ride as a fan of the untold hours of listening enjoyment that your brand and chemistry provided. Your evolution as a top player has been galvanized by a handful of greats and I’m very sorry that another has passed on. Carry the torch you good guy…
I’m still in shock over the loss of David Sanborn. My condolences to his family and friends, especially his longtime musical collaborator Marcus Miller. Prayers and thoughts are with you, Marcus, as you navigate through this difficult time in your life.

I just listened to a Bob James tune called "Restless" I looked on the CD one time to look for the credit on the saxophone, Come to find out, it was not David Sanborn as I thought, but rather another saxophonist by the name of Andy Snitzer.. Great tribute, heartfelt! Having met Dave a couple times after all those years of hearing his personal sound, it was cool to experience brief encounters, once in Europe, & once backstage @ Dizzy's Clu., Dave seemed truly comfortable being genuinely gracious. Ironically, i was humbled when he approached me at Dizzy's. George Coleman had acknowledged Dave from the stage, so I was aware he was in the room, but hadn't seen him come backstage, & it was as if he appeared out of nowhere. I thanked him & mentioned that I'd met him before & that I had attended high school with Marcus. Ironically, he responded, 'You know, Marcus taught me something: to save everything.' Got it! Grateful for his personal sound, & how he also paid tribute to David 'Fathead' Newman, the other Ray Charles sax man. Praying comfort for his family & friends, & may he rest in peace.' Bryan Carrott
