Sanborn has a brilliant sense of phrasing both technically and melodically. He knows exactly at what point to burn and when to hold back and this makes his solos infinitely more satisfying and exciting than somebody from the Berkeley Jazz Mafia blowing endlessly through 784 full pages of sqemihemidemisemiquavers.

I remember buying my first stereo as a teenager in the mid 70's, still living at home, and putting this album on... my mom came in and asked, "Who is that?" I said "David Sanborn." All she said was, "That's beautiful." It still is. Hiram, Marcus, Buddy, and of course David... thank you. Nearly 50 years later it still resonates.

I remember the first time I heard this tune. I was in St. Louis (Sanborn grew up in St. Louis, but he wasn't born there.) I was in my cousin's basement and he played a vinyl album called "Straight to the Heart" I was in awe then and almost 40 years later I'm still in awe-- by far this is my favorite album of all time and my wife and I see Sanborn in concert whenever we get a chance. Amazing that a guy who can't even take in a full breath can play the sax like none other!! And what about Hiram Bullock on guitar!!

OMG I stuck this in my UA-cam faves for a reason at least 10 years ago. David Sanborn...Thank YOU! I met you many times and you were always so gracious each and every time. This video I watched on VHS too many times to even guess. The greatest preacher and holler back (@ 8:30) and forth between you and Hiram! THANK you for taking the Sax above and beyond NO OTHER! Not going to miss you because you left behind your mastery that no one will ever come close too! Love ya Brother!💔

I saw this band in the Hammersmith Odeon, London in 1987. Shortly after Hiram started his solo someone in the crowd did two loud whistles (as on this recording) which caused some of the audience to laugh, they'd obviously heard the album quite a few times!

Baddest alto tune ever. Saw him at the Warfield, SF, ca. ‘85. We were going nuts at the climax spots. Fantastic band straight through. And that piano intro- geez. Saw a couple of the band members outside getting a breath of fresh air after the concert. Dang! Why didn’t we stop to thank ‘em. Oh well...thanks gents! You killed it. I used to try to play like Sanborn. Eventually I figured out I can’t, so just enjoy his brilliant playing, while I try to find my own “brilliance”, whatever that may be. God bless you David, and band.
