This Is the Best Feather Pattern I've Made in a Knife: Full Build

- I am making a "W" Feather Pattern Damascus Frame Handle Fighter with 5,000 layers. This is the most beautiful feather pattern I have made. The pattern came out very consistent, which I love. I am using 1084 and 15n20. The fittings are feather pattern damascus as well, with a little bit of 24k gold inlay. The handle is fossilized mammoth ivory with Argentium Silver pins. This is a take-down construction, it is my first feather pattern to coffee darken. One of my best feathers! This knife was a custom knife made for an Australian customer, that's really cool because this is my first knife to make it "Down Under". This is the 199th knife I have built. We call it "Take Flight".

About Me
“The world needs more makers.” ~ RoyerX
Being from a family of creatives whose motto was to produce not to consume was etched into Kyle from a very early age and being educated at home gave him many opportunities to work hard at his own creative pursuits.
At eighteen, Kyle graduated high school and two weeks later received his Journeyman Smith Stamp and a rare double win of the George Peck Award and Bill Moran Award, “the 18-year-old prodigy”, “the blazing bladesmith” was what BLADE Magazine labeled him. Following that victory in November 2009 BLADE Magazine ran a special five-page spread “That Young and That Good”, the article went on to say “His ability to masterfully execute new designs, processes and artistic damascus patterns is remarkable. In spite of his young age, his fit/finish and attention to detail is representative of some of today's most known and sought after makers.” He was one of two to achieve Mastersmith by the age of twenty. His knives and his skills are highly sought after worldwide.
In the early years, if you weren’t at a knife show or a hammer-in, learning from the masters, information was hard to find, there was no online content and only a few books and videos, so it was a lot of trial and error in the knife shop. Kyle is passionate to teach makers his more than fourteen years of experience.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” We hope we can inspire you on your maker’s journey.
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

No thanks, I'll just watch the whole video. Love it, can't wait to see more of your awesome creations! You sir are an absolute genius :)
Beautiful!
Beautiful knife!! Where can I get one?
Amazing craftmanship!....if only i could ever own a blade as nice as this one!....watched the full vid....i was not able to skip even a second out of the crafting process.....stay safe and keep ot up!!
Wtf... i say youre a master... amazing...
Kyle, when you show the knife during the last 30 secs or so, UA-cam covers your work up with those stupid Up Next videos. At least on PC, we never really got to see the finished knife. Much love, brother, love your work as always.
Same thing on mobile.
Add 10 seconds of nothing to stop this
Most annoying thing about most videos
@@thecannabisguru Thumbs up. Practically makes sense. I had suggested the same to another UA-camr. :)
AGREED! More B roll of the finished knife is always a treat
I've been blacksmithing for a few years now, made about 30 knives. It gives me shivers down my spine seeing how incredibly beautiful are the blades You make. Thanks for being the motivation many people need. Stay healthy and happy!
Hey thanks Matt. Check out learnknifemaking.com if you want to level up your knife making skills.

Everyone talks about forging but it’s the hand sanding that takes he skill and attention to detail
Patience and attention to detail yes, I'm not sure hand sanding requires a ton of skill though.
Forging can be very challenging If you want to do it right. Especially when you are working on a more complex Projekt.
It ALL takes 'skill and attention to detail' from what I've experienced in general fab. Not cleaning materials properly for a weld or not prepping a surface properly for high quality paint work is absolutely REQUIRED to achieve excellence, or even just functional usefulness in some areas. I don't care how much skilled finish work you do. Knowing what the hell you are doing, technically, is always a plus, too. I used to get first class results eventually without benefiting from others hard earned knowledge, but it is definitely the hard way round.
@@SkunkworksProps The fact that you say "I'm not sure" speaks volumes...just sayin'. :-) I can tell you for a FACT, in some applications it very much DOES require skill, and knowledge...like say block sanding a car to optical straightness (exquisite show finish in say hand rubbed black lacquer that I could literally read my LCD watch in from a couple of feet away...a CUDA I did way back). You will NEVER get there without some knowledge and technique, as an example one requirement I found eventually is the material being sanded MUST be of the same hardness throughout...period, and sanding patterns and block orientation are critical. If you start down into some other material, primer, or FAR worse metal, stop apply more fill paint, and continue. This is, of course, after you've gotten everything incredibly close to perfection beforehand, with CAREFUL highly accurate bodywork and light thin body fills. Just ONE example. Oh, and on flat wood....scrape, don't sand, and ONLY with the grain, and ONLY with a sharp exceedingly straight scraper, and a bit of technique. You can slop together **** all day long, but to accomplish craftsman level work, like this knife here, a different story altogether.
@@MrJdsenior Actually when I said "I'm not sure" I was just trying not to be a dick. I paint helmets as well as make knives so I understand what you mean about getting an incredible hand finish on a painted surface. But we weren't talking about car or wood finishing. It's just not the same with hand sanding knives. Does it require SOME skill? Sure, and the funkier the grind, the more skill it will take, and the more skilled you are, the better the final piece will look. My disagreement with your initial comment was really the dismissive attitude towards the skill of forging vs finishing. As you've said in your own comment, if the fundamentals aren't right then you will struggle all the way though the job.
Kyle chooses not to forge his blades to shape as much as others because the mosaic patterns would suffer, and that's totally fine. But to suggest that forging's not really that big a deal and it's the hand sanding that takes real skill as your initial comment did just doesn't make sense to me.
That a Master Smith takes the time to video and document his process is appreciated beyond what my words can express. Obviously you've created another masterpiece.
Thanks Byson Alben
Yea it really is ive learned alot and continue to learn everyday from these videos
The etch on those fittings was just mesmerising! Absolutely insane, one of the nicest looking knives I’ve ever seen
Thanks!
Everytime you do a pattern reveal I’m left gasping, by now I shouldn’t be surprised but I always am at how beautiful they are.
Thanks!

I didn't even think that there are so many and professional manufacturers of this steel in the world, don't get tired
Holy crap, this is probably the most beautiful pattern I’ve ever seen in a knife!
Truly one of the most skilled smiths out there. Every project you share with us leaves me awe struck, with an itch to go light up my own forge
Hey thanks jim. You go do my friend. Today is the day. Keep Forging On my friend
Dad
100% agree with this.
ua-cam.com/video/Ytt1yr5o2-w/v-deo.html
I wish you would show more of the finished product, so that we could admire the master piece in front of us. This is so great. I'm hooked!
Hey thanks rano
Sorry got cut at end
Glad you’re here hanging out with us my friend
Dad
I think this is my new favorite damascus pattern to date.
every time in awe of the craftmanship and sense of style, these pieces all are priceless beauties
Sir, I cannot express how impressed I am with your patience and craftsmanship for they don’t always exist together. This piece, and really the process, exhibit such a high level of both. I am VERY impressed. The only criticism is that you’ve created such a fine piece of art such that it shouldn’t ever be used. It is beyond a tool. Hats off to you sir.
Thanks Chris. All of our knives are 100% service ready. Race ready 👍🏻☕️🔥⚔️
Dad
This is a masterpiece. The hand detailing you did was perfection and it shows in the end. Beautiful work sir.
AGREE. This is truly a Masterpiece of work. Absolutely Incredible work and design.
I love every piece you create. I watch forging across every platform and from everyone i can. The things you do surpass everyone hands down. Never see anyone make a knife to come apart to be serviceable so many make a threaded nut and stuff epoxy in it. And every time i think to myself WTH is the point just to glue it solid. If i could shake your hand and give you a hug for someone thinking like me lol. You are a step above everyone else. And my 3 teen kids love your work as well. My youngest is 14 and a maker. And your work blowes his reen brain every time. Thank you for your work and teachings.
I've said it before, you're a credit to mankind.
You've outdone yourselves once again Royer Team. Beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
As always Kyle, your attention to detail is unrivaled IMO. You are in a league of your own, I swear!
2:12 Ah, yes! I see Man Law prevails in your workshop as well, Mr Royer. Well played, Sir. Well played.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
Thanks for showing how you made this and all the other art pieces
GOD BLESS
Отличная работа!
Привет из Беларуси!
Как всегда, умопомрачительно! Очень крутой нож)
A million dollar knife if there ever was one. Absolutely beautiful you sir are an artist. 😊😊😊😊😊
👍🏻☕️🔥⚔️
Your stuff I don't even think can be categorised as blacksmithing anymore, at a certain point it has to become poetry
Absolutely the best knife maker on UA-cam? Or are we missing other channels?
Nope, you're not forgetting anyone. He's absolutely the best
Hey thanks my friend
@@KyleRoyerKnives thank you guys for showing us the talents of a master smith! I just got my first knife making kit for Christmas and it’s something I hope to keep learning about the rest of my life. All the little tips and tricks, the work ethic, high standard and educational material you guys provide for our benefit is invaluable. It’s awesome that someone like you and your family would take the time to record and edit all of it.
Your blades are absolutely gorgeous! Not just the master level Damascus forging, but the AMAZING level of fitting? 🤯 I’m scared to imagine how much you charge for a piece...whatever it is, it’s worth it!
Hey thanks drawk
Good to have you here
Cheers

I learned to forge knives when I was younger, just as a hobby. Hopefully when I retire I'll have time to start up again. Just functional stuff, nothing pretty. I saw that process you did, and I'm so beyond words impressed at that precision! Just incredible!
Spectacular Erik. Let me know how we can help when you get fired back up.
Merry Christmas my friend

The fact that no detail is overlooked, and how every single thing he does is so perfectly crafted and beautiful. Great job my friend!

0:28 "We're getting to the critical stage in the feathermaking process" Whoa whoa, that escalated quickly!
Man, that feather pattern looks like the coat from a badger or a boar... really cool effect, especially for a hunting style knife.
I know eh? Isn't he just awesome? I love his work, oh so good!!
Hey thanks Mr Tingles
Glad you’re here hanging out with us all

Can you make the "Fangs of the Serpent" dagger Kyle?! From conan the barbarian..I really love the dagger.
To use mammoth ivory for the handle is just insane! You have made a truly mythical knife
Your attention to detail is one of the many things I love about watching your work👍🏻
Thank you very much!
I would love to see how you could use clicksprings bluing technique that blue colour with the black you so expertly do would be cool as
How insane is clickspring, perfectly blue every single time. That man is a better craftsman than I could ever dream to be. Same as kyle.
I’d be interested to see what his blacking/bluing process would look like in Damascus after etching instead of coffee blacking. That would be a super dark contrast...
When it comes down to absolute perfection in workmanship Chris and Kyle are my favourites. It's.... It's just insane how much attention to detail they have.. I loves it..

Kyle, I want you to know that there is no other knife making video online, or channel for that matter, that offers the experience that yours does. Every step is the same for making most high end knives, but on your work, every step, has ten combined smaller steps that just take you from high end knife making status, to total immortality. The standards you have committed your work to, shine through so brightly. Keep your humility. This channel is so awesome.
